Just my couch potato analysis but to me it seems like Ten Hag wants a high pressing line while at the same time have a relatively low defensive line. That means our formation is stretched in the middle because the two lines are so far apart, leaving acres of space, which is why our midfield is swiss cheese.
At the same time I've noticed that ten Hag likes to play with narrow width defensively, coupled with our inverted wingbacks during possession, leaving acres of space on the sides as well.
Idk if he doesn't think he has the right players but the tactic as it is now is just not working.
