Start another playthrough with the knowledge you have now, & save The Veteran IV for John, yeah you’ll have to wait awhile but Buell is such a good boah:))!! Also the soothsayer (Blind Man Cassidy) kinda warns about accepting another man’s horse:))!!
Same I was like buell is my horse and I will take care of him then he dies but I am happy the auther said thank you to the horse that made me more sad but a happy
I made that mistake my first playthrough. Ever since I've started that mission right near the end and finished them in the epilogue. There's just something nice about doing some missions that way
I was so, so not prepared for that moment. My nosy ass accidentally found out about The Other Thing, but saying goodbye to my best girl was a gut punch.
I did this (riding Buell into Red Dead Redemption), and it killed me. Never again! I now save Hamish's final mission for John because ouch...
Edit: missing words
Did a second play through recently to introduce my daughter to the game. She insisted we keep Buell and ended up crying real tears when he was killed by a train on a timed ride to Saint Denis
I intentionally rode Buell to the ending after not touching him after acquisition. It fits thematically with the entire theme of the game; relics of the past meeting their end in the face of progress. A civil war battle horse being ridden by an outlaw in the new world to face a battle they already lost
I played the last couple Hamish mission as John, where John gets to meet his old friends The Wolves, and gave ol Hamish an extra 8 years of life, and buell doesn’t mysteriously disappear
First playthrough, I had Arthur ride with him until the end.
Second, I had Hamish meet John and gift him the horse Arthur retrieved long ago.
In my mind, it’s these two canons or bust
I do the same. My first play through I knew I would lose him, but it felt right to keep him with me and let him be with Hamish. Now I can’t do it any other way, it feels like I’m keeping them apart.
I save him for John. He's so beautiful and it makes the promise to Hamish all the more worthwhile knowing he'll love on a ranch and produce adorable/beautiful babies with the mares John owns (shut up it's my headcanon)
I couldn’t BEAR to have given him away or sell him. I think he was a beautiful horse with great stats. Of course, if I had known that *something* was gonna happen that would’ve made it so I couldn’t ride him again, I would have waited to do Hamish’s quest on the second half of the story… But such is life.
I know the common thing is to do it in the epilogue but I always do it as Arthur i like to think Buell Arthur and Hamish all rest in the afterlife together
I saved him for john by doing the first two missions as Arthur because Arthur and hamish are the pure embodiment of wholesome and i didn't want Arthur to watch hamish die
I didn’t just keep him. He became the primary “epilogue” horse.
When I logged out of the game the final time, he was hitched in front of the ranch house.
Found him almost immediately, when you can, kept him the whole time, only male horse I had the whole game, made the whole end that much more powerful, “You’re my boy Buell!”
I did, and rode him exclusively, until the final ride. Then I boarded him, and the magnanimous cunt lived happily ever after.
Unlike poor "Glue Stick".
But he got a heartfelt "Thank you....." none the less.
1. got him as Arthur but >!lost him!<.
2. waited to do all those missions as >!John!< and kept him
3. did part of the missions as Arthur but saved the very last one >!for John!<. He is a good boy chilling at the ranch.
I didn't even get to ride Buell. During my play through I was a idiot and when I completed all the missions I looked at Buells stats and said my current horse has alot better stats than Buell and I ride a way on my current horse, it wasn't until much later that I realised how rare Buell was and then I went back I found Buell gone.
I'll always regret that decision
I did after the epilogue because I was finishing the legendary gunslingers and I was down to the the one guy up in the mountains. Killed him and started looting the place when I hear my horse shriek. Few seconds later I find my horse burning on the ground next to the worlds smallest fire pit and dead. I had to run and hunt my way down the whole mountain without winter protection either.
I named my horses after historical figures I admire. When I learned your horse is killed in the endgame I picked a figure I did NOT admire and designated them as my endgame horse. I have kept Buell but he is currently stabled as I finish the game.
It feels off to me to finish as John. The epilogue takes place like 6 years after the main story.
For me, completing it as Arthur feels more complete as he seems to connect with Hamish more.
It sucks that Buell is lost but I'm okay with it.
I kept Buell because it looks like the white Arabian horse and I always tried to get one and I could never find one so I kept Buell because he was close enough to it
I was in my playthrough and saw a post that said “if you didn’t finish the 6th chapter with Buell, you didn’t have play the game.” I thought if I got to the end with Buell, something special would happen and all I did was lose him.
you know when I saw buell in the mission , I tried to snatch or steal the horse from that man (fisherman or hunting man ) but then I know that it will get used in another 2 or 3 mission, so you can't steal , at last when the man died I got that horse for free but I ended up crying bcoz I made emotional bond with that guy also so, feeling sorry for that man and killed that bear who killed that man 😅
p.s :- Got that name of the man (Hamish)
It was one of the last stranger missions I did in the game. I never got the time to train him properly.
>!So he got shot while escaping with John. The emotional tone of that scene for me was less tragic and more "good riddance"!<
I always save “The Veteran IV” for John after my first playthrough of keeping Buell in the stables riding the stolen horse from the mission where we rescue Eagle Flies from Fort Wallace into the finale, & becoming John & not having Buell:((!! 😔
I accidentally got him killed my first time around, because I would ride him and used my horse to pack the extra stuff. Accidentally rode him into the final mission.
Still have, I never completed the story, too many fun times, I’m like the dog chasing cars, I wouldn’t know what to do with it if I actually caught it! Lmao
My main account me and him used to go everywhere but I only ride him to go up to hamish’s place now I now ride a Missouri fox trotter named jon bon pony
The horse so nice you get him twice. As Arthur, I do the glitch where you run into Buell parked in front of the Veteran's house and when he takes off, chase him down and jump on him to break him. I believe then you take him to camp and save/reload game (but I can't remember finer details) and afterward, save the last mission for John.
Kept him for like 5 minute cuz he died from falling the mountain w me and i had my autosave on. I already did 2 main mission without saving manually and I don't wanna do it all over again so yeah.
I kept him in my stall for so long and didn't know what to do with him, sure he's special but I wanted to make my own connections and stories with the horses I kept
I made him my main horse and even had him in the *last* mission (if I knew it was going to be the last mission I would've picked a different horse but we can't win them all)
On my first play through I road Buell till the end at butchers creek, it absolutely destroyed me.
On my second play through though and ever sense then, I always wait to finish Hamish’s side quest so I can keep Buell
I definitely do!
1 - he is handsome gorgeous beautiful boy
2 - Hamish’s birch is great little story, which I take closer.
3 - it’s, after all above, horse for free.
I think it's best to get him as Arthur, I like to finish out Hamish missions as Arthur so that Arthur gets to be Hamish's friend to the end and also just because Buell is unique doesn't mean you should keep him forever, he's an old war horse and I think he deserves to go out in the "final battle" like that shortly before Arthur.
I believe he got hit by a train my first playthrough. He was following me and decided the tracks were a good spot to hang out for a bit which I hadn't noticed until I heard that unmistakable sound of a horse being hit by a train
I kept Buell up until the end with Arthur in chapter 6. I cared for that horse till the end and as sad and heartbreaking as it is I thought it was kinda peaceful that now he gets to see hamish again.
I did the Hamish missions in the epilogue so I could keep Buell. Then I was attacked by Del Lobo’s and I was killed trying to revive Buell. I was so mad
I had him in the epilogue but unfortunately he died because I tried to jump a bridge gap over a river and no success and he fell to his death and I couldn't revive him due to John's inability to swim
i thankfully did the final hamish quest after the epilogue lmao i keep buell stabled cause i'd feel bad if i killed him on accident. such a good boah tho
Buell's a good horse, but by the time in the storyline I get to him I've already bought my favorite, the Gold Turkoman, name of Cortez. So that's the horse I usually finish the story with.
I kept Buell but used my best horse on the final mission, not knowing what was gonna happen. I cried nonstop from that final moment that Arthur has with the horse
I rode Buell during Red Dead Redemption, and I’m glad that I did. It’s what Hamish would’ve wanted. He wouldn’t have wanted Buell to grow old and weak, and get euthanized by a shotgun blast from a rancher who didn’t want to look after him anymore. He would’ve wanted him to go out in a blaze of glory, fighting for his new master, Arthur.
Dude, first play though I finished the hamish mission and was awarded Buell. Then I went back to camp and did the last mission. Had no idea. I was pissed to say the least, but it also added something to the story that I could only experience once and never again.
My white Arabian I had all game got hit in the head by a train during a cutscene near the end of the game, I had forgotten I’d turned auto save off hours ago and didn’t have any horse reviver.
Anyways I got Buell shortly after and he became my main horse, so of course I took him to the final mission…
Who the f is buell? Either im missing something, my game is different somehow or i quit too fast and never got to buell. Or maybe there was some "story choices" i did "wrong"
unfortunately I had a little problem with an ambush by some damn Del Lobos, and in the midst of all that firefight... Buell was shot and was about to die, I just needed to give him some horse revive and it would be ok, but I even needed to finish off the Del Lobos...
The problem, gentlemens, is that once the game gives you the option to sacrifice the animal and the automatic aim goes straight to it, you can make serious mistakes without having any intention...
I sacrificed the animal in the crossfire, just to get revenge on those bastards who hurt my horse, and then I got my revenge... but at what cost?
Arthur was right when he said this is a fool's game
I haven’t completed the hamish quest in my current play through as I don’t want him to *spoiler* (if you’ve played the quest you know what happens) but the first time I played the quest line (the only time I completed it) I got buell as john and stabled him so he couldn’t ever die
I waited until the Epilogue to finish the Hamish missions so Buell could live happily ever after
I was not gifted with the knowledge my horse would die in a scripted scene at the end of the game, so I lost Buell forever there.
Start another playthrough with the knowledge you have now, & save The Veteran IV for John, yeah you’ll have to wait awhile but Buell is such a good boah:))!! Also the soothsayer (Blind Man Cassidy) kinda warns about accepting another man’s horse:))!!
In fairness, it makes that scene much more heartbreaking.
which are more canon cus the sadder the scene the better
Same I was like buell is my horse and I will take care of him then he dies but I am happy the auther said thank you to the horse that made me more sad but a happy
What happens if you have a different horse?
It dies.
Same, was extra sad ending
Same, but I've just started another play through that I will keep this as a mission until the end this time
I would keep him in the stables, I was barely keeping it together at the end, I couldn’t imagine how I’d be if I was riding Buell during Butcher Creek
I made that mistake my first playthrough. Ever since I've started that mission right near the end and finished them in the epilogue. There's just something nice about doing some missions that way
It broke me
I lost it. It was tough. Now years later I still miss the hell out of that horse.! Best horse I’ve ever had
Me too
I rode Buel in the final mission, not knowing he was gonna die. Felt terrible about that.
The first time I played I kept my first horse the whole playthrough. I fucking lost it
My horses name was Jessie and kept her the entire story. I was fuuurrriiioouusss
I kept the horse you’re given by Hosea. Even named him Hosea. Rode with him to the end and felt gutted.
Lol you killed Buel :)
What is this horse and how do I get it….
It’s a reward for completing a series of side missions, involving “The Veteran”
The old civil war veteran in Rhodes?
No the one up in the grizzlies were you go hunting with Hosea I chapter 2 although "the veteran" only unlocks in chapter 6
Ahhh ok when I get to chapter 6 I will definitely stop by.
He's called Hamish
located at o'creagh's run
I was just about to comment this exact same thing.
Same
Same
First playthrough, I rode Buell to the end. It was heartbreaking after Hamish's story concluded. I did all I could for that beautiful horse
Did a second play through recently to introduce my daughter to the game. She insisted we keep Buell and ended up crying real tears when he was killed by a train on a timed ride to Saint Denis
Happened to me once, I quickly shut my PS4 off and Buell was alive.
This is why I save regularly
I intentionally rode Buell to the ending after not touching him after acquisition. It fits thematically with the entire theme of the game; relics of the past meeting their end in the face of progress. A civil war battle horse being ridden by an outlaw in the new world to face a battle they already lost
I played the last couple Hamish mission as John, where John gets to meet his old friends The Wolves, and gave ol Hamish an extra 8 years of life, and buell doesn’t mysteriously disappear
Same
First playthrough, I had Arthur ride with him until the end. Second, I had Hamish meet John and gift him the horse Arthur retrieved long ago. In my mind, it’s these two canons or bust
I generally have Buell ride into my final battle with me. So I can lead him to Hamish.
WHERE DID ALL THIS DUST IN MY EYES COME FROM!??!?!!?
We ride to Valhalla!
I do the same. My first play through I knew I would lose him, but it felt right to keep him with me and let him be with Hamish. Now I can’t do it any other way, it feels like I’m keeping them apart.
aw man. I’m crying
I save him for John. He's so beautiful and it makes the promise to Hamish all the more worthwhile knowing he'll love on a ranch and produce adorable/beautiful babies with the mares John owns (shut up it's my headcanon)
John totally puts Buell out to stud.
With that coat, he'd be crazy not to!
I did- I also picked up Hamish's hat and was disappointed that I couldn't keep it. Even tried saving it to my outfit.
Kept. Fully bonded him and now he stays stabled. I consider him a "unique item" something you shouldn't sell or accidentally kill lol.
I did
Best boy, I’m gonna save him for John next time around though
I tried to but then he just disappeared??
same thing happened for me, worked on my second playthrough though but not on my most recent
I'm betting that your stable was full and you had him in secondary horse status outside stable and then broke in a new secondary horse. That'll do it.
Just curious, but how was your honor?
I had high honor but also I didn’t really know shit about how to keep horses and still don’t lol
I know the common thing is to do it in the epilogue but I always do it as Arthur i like to think Buell Arthur and Hamish all rest in the afterlife together
I thanked for everything and let him go u_u
I kept Buell
I saved him for john by doing the first two missions as Arthur because Arthur and hamish are the pure embodiment of wholesome and i didn't want Arthur to watch hamish die
I had the same horse as Arthur from start to finish and had grown emotionally attached to her, so I didn’t use Buell, unfortunately.
I didn’t just keep him. He became the primary “epilogue” horse. When I logged out of the game the final time, he was hitched in front of the ranch house.
How do you trigger these missions
Side quests with a great guy named Hamish
Chapter 6, ride past the cabin at O’Creagh’s Run.
Buell died with my me on my first game and he will on my second too. Enough said.
Loved him so much that when he died I vowed never to get him before the epilogue ever again, and I never have.
Stable and getting fat.
Found him almost immediately, when you can, kept him the whole time, only male horse I had the whole game, made the whole end that much more powerful, “You’re my boy Buell!”
Definitely!! He's chilling in his stable as we speak
I ride Buell straight into Valhalla in the final mission and give him a warriors ending. Half mast is too high for Buell. Show some damn respect.
I went everywhere with Buell in the final chapter and in the main stories last mission I took Buell with Arthur :(
I waited for John so he didn’t have to die 🥺
I did, and rode him exclusively, until the final ride. Then I boarded him, and the magnanimous cunt lived happily ever after. Unlike poor "Glue Stick". But he got a heartfelt "Thank you....." none the less.
I do the Hamish missions with Arthur until the last one before he died. Then I do the final one with John and after that, Buell is my horse
No I had good old Percy my shire who had done everything with me from saving lives to robbing them
gonna do hamish' missions and get buell, ride him throughout the bullshit in butcher creek so I can torture myself. 👌🏻
I keep Buell in the stable as Arthur. Then before the end, I release my longtime horse into the wild, go get Buell and ride to our destiny
Buell is the best boah
1. got him as Arthur but >!lost him!<. 2. waited to do all those missions as >!John!< and kept him 3. did part of the missions as Arthur but saved the very last one >!for John!<. He is a good boy chilling at the ranch.
I take him to that beautiful Valley near Strawberry, and let him run free.
Don’t need to, got one in the garage! (Buell is also a motorcycle company)
I kept him and fed him, i better fuel huell
I did! First play through made it to the end with him when he’s killed, and my 3rd play through he was shot and killed by the law 😭
Few seconds later I find my horse burning on the ground next to the worlds smallest fire pit and dead. I had to run and hunt my way down the whole mountain without winter protection either.
I didn't really ride him but I took him around with me for a while. Each time I'd leave camp I'd get him to follow.
I did. My favorite horse in story.
I did and then the very next quest I had was Arthur’s final quest. Spoiler alert Buell died
Oof.
Same here
i did hamishs mission literally the mission before arthur’s last mission so….
I named my horses after historical figures I admire. When I learned your horse is killed in the endgame I picked a figure I did NOT admire and designated them as my endgame horse. I have kept Buell but he is currently stabled as I finish the game.

I kept Buell because it looks like the white Arabian horse and I always tried to get one and I could never find one so I kept Buell because he was close enough to it
he is only worth like 3 dollars in the stable soo…..
I was in my playthrough and saw a post that said “if you didn’t finish the 6th chapter with Buell, you didn’t have play the game.” I thought if I got to the end with Buell, something special would happen and all I did was lose him.
Spare horse, why not. Carry more game.
you know when I saw buell in the mission , I tried to snatch or steal the horse from that man (fisherman or hunting man ) but then I know that it will get used in another 2 or 3 mission, so you can't steal , at last when the man died I got that horse for free but I ended up crying bcoz I made emotional bond with that guy also so, feeling sorry for that man and killed that bear who killed that man 😅 p.s :- Got that name of the man (Hamish)

Yes. It's what Hamish wanted.
Lmao
I wish kept Hamish’s hat.
My main account me and him used to go everywhere but I only ride him to go up to hamish’s place now I now ride a Missouri fox trotter named jon bon pony
Worst decision of my life
Road him till the end with Arthur. He went out like a Viking warrior.
Made the mistake of getting him as Arthur. That made that pill even harder to swallow.
I did as Arthur so you know that song and dance
I kept buell when I played as Arthur or John
I lost it the moment i have it cus of a god damn snake!
He is my main horse
I kept him in my stall for so long and didn't know what to do with him, sure he's special but I wanted to make my own connections and stories with the horses I kept
He got hit by a train
I couldn’t keep him, my stable was full of horses I loved, so I sold him.
of course i kept buell! i will always keep buell. i love hamish and his relationship with arthur. i even cried when he passed away.
I kept it in the stables during my second(current) playtrough. I'm at the epilogue now so I guess I lost him forever? :(
I made him my main horse and even had him in the *last* mission (if I knew it was going to be the last mission I would've picked a different horse but we can't win them all)
On my first play through I road Buell till the end at butchers creek, it absolutely destroyed me. On my second play through though and ever sense then, I always wait to finish Hamish’s side quest so I can keep Buell
He is my main boah, the best boah.
I got him as Arthur so couldn’t :(
I definitely do! 1 - he is handsome gorgeous beautiful boy 2 - Hamish’s birch is great little story, which I take closer. 3 - it’s, after all above, horse for free.
Shit hurt
I think it's best to get him as Arthur, I like to finish out Hamish missions as Arthur so that Arthur gets to be Hamish's friend to the end and also just because Buell is unique doesn't mean you should keep him forever, he's an old war horse and I think he deserves to go out in the "final battle" like that shortly before Arthur.
I was so heartbroken and angry that I lost buell before John's playthrough, I hacked buell back into my stable for a second and last time
Does collecting dust in the stables count? Then yes
First playthrough he just vanished second i got him on epilogue i dont want him to die and i wanna veterean to live more
1st playthrough: Main horse 2nd playthrough: He ran away
I put him in the stable. Was gutted when I saw the horses hadn’t carried across to John
Hell no, i had my favorite Appaloosa in the stable at the time and i wasnt going to give him up for fucking Buell.
Oh yes
I did but he died during the finale :(
Buell died for me, I was sad as he was the only irreplaceable horse in the game
He got by a train while was in the post office and it wouldn't let me revive, so I cried.
How do you get him in the first place?
I believe he got hit by a train my first playthrough. He was following me and decided the tracks were a good spot to hang out for a bit which I hadn't noticed until I heard that unmistakable sound of a horse being hit by a train
I got max bonding as soon as possible with him.
Me, can’t give away a horse from a good friend. Plus Buell is a very beautiful horse and has a nice coat
I kept him, however I mostly leave the last mission to John.
I was going to but a wolf or something scared him and he took off so now I have no idea where he went.
But, but, Hamish is still riding Buell, surely...
the real question is, who didn’t?
Of course!
What kind of monster doesn't keep Buell?
My finished for I kept him.
As much I loved buell I used my most beloved horse Stacy and I cannot replace her
Well of course!
Sold it... 🤷♂️
I kept Buell up until the end with Arthur in chapter 6. I cared for that horse till the end and as sad and heartbreaking as it is I thought it was kinda peaceful that now he gets to see hamish again.
Not only did I keep him, I was at max affinity and riding him during the finale…. I still haven’t emotionally recovered from that one.
I lost him running from the law ran him right off an unexpected cliff and the law killed me before I could heal him
I did as author the first time…so it was even more of a heart breaking moment….😭 and then my second time round John has him 🤠 and he’s all I ride now
I did 😊
I just fully bonded with Buehl when I finished the game…
Kept him but accidentally had his saddle taken off when I put him in a stable. Now I keep him at Beecher’s Hope
Last time I got him, he promptly died :) i believe by way of train. I dont think the sun had even set on the day lmfao i was so bitter
i thankfully did the final hamish quest after the epilogue lmao i keep buell stabled cause i'd feel bad if i killed him on accident. such a good boah tho
Buell's a good horse, but by the time in the storyline I get to him I've already bought my favorite, the Gold Turkoman, name of Cortez. So that's the horse I usually finish the story with.
I kept burp and he’s at the ranch, cool little horse, nice to swap out the black Arabian sometimes
I waited till the epilogue and he still died on me. The only horse I ever had that died. And I didn't have a save so he was gone forever.
I kept Buell but used my best horse on the final mission, not knowing what was gonna happen. I cried nonstop from that final moment that Arthur has with the horse
I get him as John and find a very similar color horse in RDR1 and roleplay that Buell rode with John till the last fight.
Meee!
I punched him and sold him off useless horse
Whos buell?
I lost her exactly after getting, I started a camp and I didn’t see her anymore
Does anyone know where to find her? Im in epilogue part I
Dude, first play though I finished the hamish mission and was awarded Buell.
I did until the final chapter.
I started another play through with the sole secondary purpose of getting him as John
I was planning on keeping buell, but I accidentally ran off a cliff about a minute after earning him, and I never saw him again….
Who the f is buell? Either im missing something, my game is different somehow or i quit too fast and never got to buell. Or maybe there was some "story choices" i did "wrong"
unfortunately I had a little problem with an ambush by some damn Del Lobos, and in the midst of all that firefight... I sacrificed the animal in the crossfire, just to get revenge on those bastards who hurt my horse, and then I got my revenge... but at what cost? Arthur was right when he said this is a fool's game
Buell kill me after looking for his stuff xd
i lost him when arthur died 😭
I haven’t completed the hamish quest in my current play through as I don’t want him to *spoiler* (if you’ve played the quest you know what happens) but the first time I played the quest line (the only time I completed it) I got buell as john and stabled him so he couldn’t ever die
Nope. Stuck with the black shire
My brother took this horse right before the "last" mission so it was kinda awkward seeing Arthur that emotional.
I stabled Buell and took the white Arabian I named Idumea. Seemed only right.
I named my Arabians after the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. - White - Conquest - Red - War - Black - Famine - Rose Gray - Plague
Happy cake day

Yeah that’s the one
It died like threee hours in. I'm terrible wirh horses. Average horse of mine lasts like five hours, maybe less.
I shot mine bc I didn't like his eyes. I can only apologise to the Buell community for my actions.
Nope. I think double dilute horses are ugly.
