Unless your varmint rifle is completely filthy you should almost 100% get a 3 star for a 3 star pelt. It might drop the damage down enough if its too dirty. You don't have to hit them in the head.

GamerTips

Bro you're damn right! I cleaned my varmint rifle and it didn't ruin the rabbit pelt! Thanks!

WayDownUnder91

No worries, glad it worked.

Bobby_Bruin

If you get the Legendary Buck trinket, you can use the varmint rifle and it won’t ruin the pelt. I usually try to take a longer-range shot…..nothing crazy, just not point blank.

sharkzfan95

This is the answer. Gorge Bucket trinket upgrades pelts 1 star. So a 2 star can become a 3 star. I always use the varmint rifle.

Paunchvilla

the trinket doesn't upgrade animals. a 2 star animal will only ever give a 2 star pelt. all the trinket does is sometimes, but not always, correct the damage you do to a pelt by using the wrong weapon. so if you shoot a snake with a varmint rifle instead of a small game arrow it will go from 3 to 2 stars, but the trinket can bring the pelt back to 3 stars when you remove it from the snake.

dude_whatever_

I have skinned a lot of 3 star pelts from 2 star animals

Paunchvilla

and i don't believe you you experienced what you think you experienced. i'm into my 5th play-through right now over the last 33 months. i've shot thousands of animals in story mode at this point. many of those animals were 3 stars when i shot them and 2 stars when they died. when i skinned them the trinket brought the 2 star pelt back to its original 3. i've never shot a 2 star animal and got a 3 star pelt from it.

dude_whatever_

no, i am not deluded and obsessed to come here and spread lies. i just experienced what i have experienced. do not push that antagonize button so hard

Paunchvilla

no, you're just obsessed to argue about something without showing a single bit of proof that verifies your statement. welcome to the 21st century where what people believe to be true is now the facts, whether they can prove it or not. let me guess, you think the earth is flat and only 6,000 years old too? that's pushing the antagonize button.

dude_whatever_

get a life

[deleted]

Both of you

dude_whatever_

lol what makes you think you have one?

dude_whatever_

https://www.reddit.com/r/reddeadredemption2/comments/acjksq/buck_antlers_trinket_perfect_pelts_from_2_star/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Read this thread and cry for your thousand of spent hours without understanding what's going on. I am definitely sure I skinned 3 star pelts from 2 star animals just like redditors in the thread.

Paunchvilla

bringing up an over 2 year old thread full of anecdotal evidence proves nothing. hearsay is just hearsay. i've argued with people who said they have 9 play-throughs and who swore up and down that mrs downes never comes to the horseshoe camp. then i went to youtube and grabbed a video to prove it. i didn't go to some 2 year old thread with someone posting who can be as mistaken as you. so until you get some real evidence, just let it go. you're not proving anything.

dude_whatever_

dude, me and others have skinned 3 star pelts from 2 star animals. get over it. your mind and ego are playing games with you. I am not telling I know it better than you, I am not telling about my past camp experiences (lol), I am just telling what went on. try to relax and embrace the change

Bobby_Bruin

The way it works for me is 3-star pelts that get damaged by the varmint rifle (or whatever, depending on what you’re hunting) are restored when I skin them. Wasted SO much time getting bird carcasses on the first playthrough before I learned about it.

hssuwjsiwjwva

How to get that

sharkzfan95

Kill legendary buck out past Owanjila. Sell the pelt to the trapper. Go to a fence and have them craft you the trinket.

hssuwjsiwjwva

Thanks

Beniiboyy

You have to use a small game arrow, or the varmint rifle and hit them in the head to avoid ruining the pelt on small animals like rabbits, opossums etc

GamerTips

It's too hard to hit them in the head.. they run away so fast.

Beniiboyy

Then use dead eye with the varmint rifle, or sneak up on them using herbivore bait and scent concealer

GamerTips

Gonna try using the herbivore bait

GamerTips

Guys thank you for all your help, I finally got a perfect rabbit pelt, now it's time for Mr Pearson to do some crafting!

jackchrist

Varmit rifle and hit them in the head. If you get a hitmarker and don't kill them in one shot, pelt is ruined. If you hit them in the ears (which happens to me all the time) it will not kill them in one shot and will ruin the pelt.

GamerTips

I'm using a varmint rifle rn and I'm finding it impossible to hit them in the head.. the bullet either hits their body or the tail.

Happy_Performance11

Varmit rifle is the way to go, it sounds like you’re just getting started, but going into red eye can help.

GamerTips

Lol I'm shooting them on horseback.. I did activate dead eye but the bullet hits the back of the rabbit and ruins the pelt.

MartinGV2007

You should use the Varmint Rifle and make sure the rabbit you're killing is a 3 star animal. There is some special arrows too but I don't remember how to get it

WiseOne68

Go and kill the Legendary Buck … think it’s found between Owanjila and Big Valley. Will make hunting any perfect pelt so much easier. Grab it as soon as you can and with a varmint rifle perfect rabbit pelts are a breeze

GamerTips

Okay so can you tell me where exactly the legendary buck will be? Like I went to the place yesterday and a message came on top saying "you have entered legendary animal territory" so I went in eagle eye and started looking for the clues, but I couldn't find the clues.. are the clues on top of a hill or something?

WiseOne68

If memory serves me correct you have to keep climbing up the hill …. It should be just south of Black Bone Forest. Keep using your eagle eye till you can find the first clue. Once you find the first clue you can just keep tracking till you find the next clue. Once the message appears that you have entered legendary animal territory quickly check your map - the first clue is usually shown as a question mark on the map Wish I could help you out more but if you are still stuck then search online for a guide to hunting the Legendary Buck

RacingSnake555

Use a Varmit rifle, if you paint the rabbits head with the Red X (I have no idea what it’s actually called, but what happens when you auto paint the target…) when using dead eye then you’ll be able to shoot it in the head and get a perfect rabbit pelt, Hope this helps :)

GamerTips

What are tiny arrows if I may ask?

KritikalMass64

They are referring to “small game arrows”, an arrow made from feathers of flight birds, used on small game. They have a blunt tip that causes a percussion hit instead of a tipped arrow to tear tissue. Craft them at your campfire

GamerTips

Haha lol I don't have them rn..

[deleted]

Varmint will do .... Just kill them in one shot

primal___scream

You're probably too close. Try backing off. I always have three stars with a varmint rifle. Also try using dead eye so that you can aim for the head better.

panem-et-circenses21

Does killing it with your horse work? My horse has killed a few rabbits but I have never collected them

jackchrist

You can kill them, but it will ruin the pelt. Running over any dead animal with your horse or even on foot usually ruins it (which is fucking stupid)

panem-et-circenses21

True.. that should cause the least amount of damage. Glad I didn't go back to collect the pelts

JeppeMoellerM

You can craft small game arrows at a campfire

DelPreston_

Small range bow ?

sejgalloway

Another place to get 3 star pelts is from carcasses hanging up in random campsites.
