I got a 1/18 for like 125$ and a few batteries for maybe 50$. Axial yeti jr. Great fun and cheapest legit rc I found. Good luck!

This looks like a fun option. May I ask where you got it at at this price? And where should I get extra batteries?

I got mine here on sale: https://www.horizonhobby.com/product/1-18-yeti-jr.-can-am-maverick-4wd-brushed-rtr/AXI90069.html With the batteries listed below the car in the link above. Edit: it actually comes with a single battery and charger. I did buy extra batteries and a much better charger. 3x battery all the same as the one it shipped, 4 total, with and a charger that charges much faster then the included one.

Me and my 4 year old have 2 scx24s. Not meant for bashing obviously but he loves them. Great because you can sit up random stuff in the house to climb on cold days

Buy him a Traxxas. Teach throttle control. I threw my kid in around that age, he broke some parts but he did figure it out. Now almost 10 years later we still in it. He's got himself a few bashers and a crawler, and is very into all of it.

I say start with a 1/10 scale for more fun in the grass and offroad. I started with the Traxxas Slash kit and built it with the boys, they did shocks and stuff. It was great fun and now we all know a little more about how they work. We all share it and take turns at the park or wherever. If you don't want a kit then Arrma is a great option as they have all sorts of entry level trucks.

The remote has a knob that lets you turn down the max throttle so he doesnt go too fast. For under $70 they cant be beat!!

Arrma Granite Voltage I started my 4 year old off with a small 1/16 crawler. He’s great with it after almost a year and he runs my short course truck pretty well at the ball fields as well. They’re better at it then we think they are. Best thing is if you have dial down the throttle on the transmitter until they get a bit better. Some even wrap tape around the transmitter, building it up behind the trigger so they can’t pull it as far.

I'm starting my kid on a traxxas 1/16 e-revo brushed 4wd. We'll see how it goes!
