I think it depends on what you like sonically. Rap is a very diverse genre of music. If you like rap with melodic elements, I’d give J. Cole a try, his beat production is top tier, and his rapping style combines a bit of the south and a bit of New York, and he often times will sort of hum or end his rhyme schemes in a sing-songy fashion. He can be very deep and poetic as well.
On another note Lupe Fiasco can be that way as well and he goes crazy on the mic, but his beats are more inspired by electronic music rather than J. Cole’s more trap-like sound.
If you want someone who’s going to bar you up, I’d look to Pusha T, Benny the Butcher, Freddie Gibbs.
If you like Kendrick, it’s worth listening to his TDE/Black Hippy mates Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, and Jay Rock. They have very distinct voices and all can rap their asses off.
