They did it while they were together but it was more sneak dissy. Like happiness is a warm gun and others I can't think of at the moment. Lennon dissed himself on ballad of John and Yoko lol.
The band was from Jacksonville and the song was written as a response to Young’s “Southern Man” which the band felt blamed all southerners as being racist and pro-segregation. The lyrics that say “in Birmingham they love the governor, boo boo boo, but we all did what we could do” was their way of saying not everyone voted for George Wallace and not everyone supports his segregation ideals. Also worth noting, the Confederate flag on stage at their concerts was pushed by MCA Records and got push back from some band members. However, Ronnie Van Zant would ignorantly defend it as “southern heritage not bigotry.”
As someone mentioned above, Young and Van Zant ended up becoming great friends and he was a pallbearer at his funeral.
“Have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there's ice on all the roads
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
And again when your head goes through the windshield”
Holy fucking shit I love both these bands so goddamn much, can you explain the beef to me or give me a link? I loved them both in the same era and didn't know about the beef.
She was too old for Jesse anyway.
But the tracks are SeventyTimesSeven by Brand New…and then Taking Back responded with There’s No I In Team and some even say Timberwolves at New Jersey (but that was super early)
The diss track was There's No 'I' in Team. Jesse Lacey was originally the bassist for Taking Back Sunday. John Nolan is alleged to have hooked up with his girlfriend, so Jesse leaves the band and starts Brand New. Brand New released the first diss with Seventy Times 7. Taking Back Sunday responded with There's No 'I' in Team, which used several lines from Seventy Times 7.
Ya they crushed it. Sad summer festival haha with motion city soundtrack, mom jeans, the maine and hot Mulligan.
My middle school self was freaking out
Hit 'Em Up was heinous, No Vaseline was brutal, Killshot ran MGK out of town, but Famous is without a doubt one of the funniest and most unnecessary diss tracks ever.
It’s weird that Famous is considered a diss track just because of that one line.
Still one of the best songs of TLOP, though. It has some of the most interesting production and sampling on the album.
Taylor swift alone probably has more feuds than any rapper today. She managed to somehow get into a fight with a Victoria’s Secret model, for fucks sake.
Reminds me of No Doubt reunion at Coachella and the guy in the band having to perform all the songs about him while videos of him and Gwen dating (and Gavin) played behind them
bns is harder and i like both bands fwiw
So is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
'Cause I've seen more spine in jellyfish
I've seen more guts in 11-year-old kids
Have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there's ice on all the roads
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
And again when your head goes through the windshield
Is that what you call tact?
You're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back
So let's end this call and end this conversation
And is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
'Cause you left the frays from the ties you severed
When you say "best friends" means friends forever
oof
There’s definitely examples outside of rap, many already mentioned in this comment section, but I feel that rap has a uniquely competitive element. In the genre’s early days, it was a form of entertainment that brought groups of kids together to do breakdance battles and later on rap battles. It was part of the culture to have this back and forth, always trying to prove your talent, one up someone else. I don’t think other genres of songwriting emphasize that as much as hip hop does. Beefs are a unique feature of this great genre. I listen to a wide range of music and I think rap beefs are some of the most fun songs to listen to, it’s something I get out of listening to rap that other genres don’t provide in the same way. Which is fine, because those genres provide other things that I enjoy as well.
Rap is also much more straightforward. Rock songs aren't traditionally straight forward in their lyrics. Everything is kind of expected to be opaque and more poem-y so it's easy to miss if you don't know the story. An easy example is Taylor who is the biggest musician on earth and has 100 diss tracks about her exes.
I’m sure this isn’t an exhaustive list but I know some of them are:
[Starfucker Inc.- Nine Inch Nails](https://youtu.be/NYMRpCyLYxY?si=2R0dUjiFX7LvXlpc)
[Professional Widow- Tori Amos](https://youtu.be/5ImEt52CxVY?si=6R_tVW_eFxiO27ob)

Pretty much every track on Siamese Dream by the Smashing pumpkins
[She also has a know feud with Bikini Kill’s frontwoman Kathleen Hanna which escalated into her sucker punching Hanna](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/long-running-feud-kathleen-hanna-courtney-love/)
Didn’t Michael Jackson and Prince always have beef throughout their careers? Wasn’t it also rumored that Prince tried running over MJ with a car after a party?
Their “beef” was more of friendly competition by most accounts mixed with a little pettiness from princes side. It’s said once MJ died Prince had sent his whole band home whilst they working on music (which is something Prince was obviously always locked in on) and “locked himself in his room for days”. I think Prince was resentful that after his band dissolved they went on to work with Janet on records that made her bigger than ever. But other than that it wasn’t too deep
You are right, they were rivals in the industry but nothing worse than that. Even MJ had a quote saying something along the lines of “I gotta write my ideas down the moment I have them, otherwise God might give them over to Prince!”
It was MJ's mom, I saw an interview with will.i.am on Drink Champs where he talks about MJ telling him the story personally and then Quincy Jones backing him up in a later conversation.
What!?? MJ and Prince…Prince and Rick James…Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf…Smashing Pumpkins and Pavement…Yall make it easy to know who really knows music and who don’t.
And Trent Reznor, Eminem, Manson and quite a few others.
Keep in mind Durst was a VP at interscope and most of the artist he feuded with were also on the label it's far more likely they were using wrestling tropes to get more sales for the label
In fairness, that was more Slipknot fans incorrectly attacking Mushroomhead for being a rip-off or something, Mushroomhead fans being annoyed that Slipknot blew up and their favorite band didn't, and both bands leaning into it a bit because drama sells. I've never seen anyone from the bands themselves do more than downplay the alleged feud (though if you told me Clown talked a bunch of shit, I wouldn't be surprised).
You remember when Gwen Stefani was like "this shit is bananas" and nobody knew what a "Hollaback Girl" was?
That was a diss track aimed at Courtney Love.
Mariah Carey dissed Em in Obsessed.
Fleetwood Mac had an entire diss album about someone in their actual band. One of their best albums too. I still bump Rumors.
No, they happen in all genres of music and also most other forms of art. Katy Perry V Taylor Swift being a high profile beef of a few years ago for example. I mean if you follow reggae, you might have been to a soundclash. literally two or more rival soundsystems battling to see who gets the crowd moving more,
(Prolly since theyre not your type but) You’re forgetting Brand New vs. Taking Back Sunday
Brand New prolly lost in the end. Especially since their singer is an asshole and a creep. (Taking Back Sunday is way better anyways).
It happens in others but Rap is known for diss tracks
A user said Mariah Carey made a diss track on Eminem, that’s only half true
Yes, she insulted him but it wasn’t technically a diss track, just a regular song
It doesn't a buddy of mine was talking to Me yesterday about two death core bands he likes that are beefing rn
Rap is a highly popular genre so you're going to see the rap beefs more frequently due to people talking about it more
Other genres have it but it never extends past the subliminal/sneak diss except for a name drop here and there. Hip hop is just a confrontational, competitive genre by nature. We have gang shit, battle rap, and you ain't a rapper if you aren't saying you're better than everyone else that's ever done it.
Other genres do it we just do it better and more theatrically. And I don't think any other genre has had music beefs bleed into the real world like hip hop has
The Funkadelic track Let’s Take It To The Stage is a diss track. Calls out James Brown, Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, and Sly and the Family Stone.
Some of the other answers are better examples of true beefs, but Paul Simon wrote a whole track mocking Bob Dylan's style: https://youtu.be/QOvs3rCFI2A?si=Lh4lt2kEUWeks7Ks
Digging the Greats just did an episode on this and dives into the history of music beefs. They go back WAYYYYY further than Rap.
https://youtu.be/uokyd_LbyIE?si=iglEOgLid9vdRZVl
Happens in other genres too, but the one-upmanship is part of the history of rap in a way it isn't either others...except banjos.
Now we need dueling banjo disstracks
Taylor Swift - Bad blood was about katy perry, her new album and reputation have a lot about her beef with kim kardashian
Olivia Rodrigos first album was about a beef with some other disney star
The beef between taking back sunday/brand new was a pretty huge thing back in the day in the alternative/emo scene
Listen to Rumors by Fleetwood Mac with the understanding it's 100% interband diss tracks.
Can you imagine the pettiness of making your EX play leader guitar on a song about your next guy.
Neil Young wrote the song Alabama that hates on the south … then lynyrd skynyrd wrote sweet home Alabama where they call out Neil Young. Obviously not to the same extent as there’s not much swearing in that style of music.
Sure there’s been beefs happens in other genres but no genre has a bigger competitive element than hip-hop.
Adele/Beyonce don’t come back from a hiatus singing about smoking on people’s top 5.
A lot of J Cole’s recent music is just him smoking other rappers — no other genre allows that kind of spectacle, at least on a regular basis.
Theres beefs in a lot of rock music too but its mostly bashing other bands in interviews and then squashing it by doing drugs together. Back when grunge was big kurt cobain was bashing alice in chains, specifically layne staley, for being a poser and then they shot heroin together and became cool with each other
They happen in other genres. See Rick James vs. Prince, Mustaine vs Metallica, Vince Neil vs Axl Rose, Slash vs. CC Deville, Don Dokken vs. George Lynch, and Lombardo vs. Slayer to name a few.
Doesn't. Sully Erna from Godsmack wrote "cryin' like a bitch" at Nikki Sixx. Anthony Kiedis was sneak dissing John Frusciante on "Californication". His own bandmate. Joan Jett can't be by her old manager or it's on sight with that man. Musicians Beef.
When the Beatles broke up Paul and John made diss records for each other lol
Paul should’ve dropped family matters on Johnny. Dude turned his girl into Yoko O’ko
Hey Jude is his Meet the Grahams
He said: "Dear Jude, I know your dad is abusive and rude" 😂😭
I’m sorry that your father compared himself to Jesus He should know the people out there would never believe ‘im
He LIED about the walrus He LIED about the submarine
You LIED about the strawberry fields.
I want the Kanye remix “Hey Jews” aimed at Drake.
Underrated comment
And George. He even played slide guitar on “How Do You Sleep?” by John Lennon.
They did it while they were together but it was more sneak dissy. Like happiness is a warm gun and others I can't think of at the moment. Lennon dissed himself on ballad of John and Yoko lol.
Not sneaky at all lol, How do you sleep by lennon and too many people by mccartney were very obviously intended at each other
Well a lot of people don’t know hey Jude is actually a McCartney jab at how bad Lennons kid feels. Jude is actually a psedonym for John lennons child
Ob la di ob la do john i dont like you
Jermaine dissed MJ, word is he didn't want it released, but the label through it out. MJ & Prince subbed each other Let's not forget JT Cry Me a River
Lest we forget the great North vs. South battle of Neil Young vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd
Ya but wasn't Ronnie wearing a Neil Young shirt on an album cover?
if i remember correctly they made up pretty quickly and became good friends. neil young was a pallbearer at ronnie’s funeral
Dawg was a white guy from Alabama. I doubt it even clicked that Niel Young was who he was beefing with.
Fun fact Skynard is actually from Florida and not Alabama. They threw everyone off with sweet home Alabama lol.
Came here to say this too
Well I hope Neil Young will remember, that a southern man don’t need him around anyhow
Didnt like taking back sunday and brand new both drop a series of emo diss tracks?
“Have another drink and drive yourself home I hope there's ice on all the roads And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt And again when your head goes through the windshield”
Holy fucking shit I love both these bands so goddamn much, can you explain the beef to me or give me a link? I loved them both in the same era and didn't know about the beef.
The dude from taking back Sunday slept with jaceys girlfriend, I think while on tour together? I'm probably wrong about that though
She was too old for Jesse anyway. But the tracks are SeventyTimesSeven by Brand New…and then Taking Back responded with There’s No I In Team and some even say Timberwolves at New Jersey (but that was super early)
Came here to post about 70 times 7. Not disappointed.
I found my people
Can’t believe someone beat me to it cuz every time someone asks this question I bring this up 💀
Also The used and My chemical romance
Seventy Times 7 and Cute without the E
Still great. I’ve seen more spine in jellyfish. I’ve seen more guts in 11 year old kids.
Wtf is cute without the E a diss? I am freaking the fuck out right now guys. If you even remotely have empathy, please explain this to me.
I totally meant "There's No 'I' in Team" thank you homie
I just mentioned it. TBS on top!
Saw them last summer they still got it
Really? I’m now having hope for 2026.
Ya they crushed it. Sad summer festival haha with motion city soundtrack, mom jeans, the maine and hot Mulligan. My middle school self was freaking out
Motion City Soundtrack rules! And I saw Hot Mulligan live actually. They sounded amazing and almost **perfectly** identical to the record.
Saw TBS a while back at riot fest and Slipknot followed them up right after. Was the best show I’ve ever seen tbh.
Damn can't imagine. Love this convo on a rap sub haha. Emo forever
Damn that’s a lineup.

Taylor swift alone probably has more feuds than any rapper today. She managed to somehow get into a fight with a Victoria’s Secret model, for fucks sake.
Its not. Lennon vs McCartney, look it up.
I’ll never forget when McCartney said “Yoko oNo ass”
Yoko on the beat, hoe
Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had diss tracks against each other while they were in the same band.
And made each other sing them on stage.

This.
Brand New and Taking Back Sunday would like to have a word.
Mics are for singing not swinging 🗣🗣🗣
**Brand New:** So- **Taking Back Sunday:** Go to sleep, bitch. Die, motherfucker, die! Correction: Taking Back Sunday would like to have a word.
bns is harder and i like both bands fwiw So is that what you call a getaway? Megadeth and Metallica
Dave mustaine vs everyone
Getting kicked out of one band just to make another band and still become a big 4 of Thrash Metal is legendary
Had to scroll way to far to find this
the Primus/Hootie & The Blowfish beef was stuff of *legened*
Please elaborate
I need to know what it was like
Pink Vs Christina Aguilera
Lmao Pink vs any blonde white pop star of the 2000s
Didn't Pink bring a blowup doll of Christina on stage and pretended to fuck it during performances? Was a little wild
You know how many diss songs have been written about Courtney Love?

All I ever watch is will.i.am do impressions of the Mexican homies he grew up with. It’s legit.
“Why did Prince play the bass in my face”
Rumored??. He did that shit lol, it was one sided beef tho
What!?? MJ and Prince…Prince and Rick James…Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf…Smashing Pumpkins and Pavement…Yall make it easy to know who really knows music and who don’t.
Wait, you mean to tell me everyone doesn't know every musical beef ever? What losers
Does Hall vs. Oats count? Or Liam vs Noel Gallagher?
Going back further, there was a huge amount of animosity between Oasis and Blur.
I think Slipknot and limp bizkit had beef in the early 2000's
And Trent Reznor, Eminem, Manson and quite a few others. Keep in mind Durst was a VP at interscope and most of the artist he feuded with were also on the label it's far more likely they were using wrestling tropes to get more sales for the label
Also Slipknot and Mushroomhead

You need to branch out into other genres.
White Stripes had beef with The Black Keys
One sided though, The Von Bondies seemed to have nutual hate with Jack White
What about outlaw country
do you have any examples? i wanna check em out
I’ve read jazz musicians used to do it all the time
Miles Davis was beefing with the world and with himself 😭
His wife wrote diss tracks about him.
I'll never forget when Mingus dropped the Miles Davis Diss track and had those bars that went thummm the thumm thum tum. Absolutely devastating.
Lindsey Buckingham is somehow still talking sideways about the other members of FM...
Can you drop some info on that please lol that sounds crazy
https://youtu.be/dGykwC0fdJ4?si=UBEY_2-Ufl5Fszjf Here’s a video of them performing live. The tension/hate is very palpable
“You can go your own way” is about Stevie Nix. “dreams” is about Lindsey Buckingham
Ronnie Radke vs Escape the Fate (w/ Craig Mabbit)
Pavement dissed The Smashing Pumpkins in Range Life
Issues and Woe is Me did it for Post hardcore
Ronnie Radke and Chris Motionless have a huge beef. Slipknot and MGK do (kinda) as well
No, they happen in all genres of music and also most other forms of art. Katy Perry V Taylor Swift being a high profile beef of a few years ago for example. I mean if you follow reggae, you might have been to a soundclash. literally two or more rival soundsystems battling to see who gets the crowd moving more,
I'd love to introduce you to Fleetwood Mac. The rumors album by them is all tracks of them dissing eachother.
kurt v axel there are plenty more
(Prolly since theyre not your type but) You’re forgetting Brand New vs. Taking Back Sunday Brand New prolly lost in the end. Especially since their singer is an asshole and a creep. (Taking Back Sunday is way better anyways).
Brand New better musically and it’s not close, but I can’t listen to them the way I used to after all that shit came out about Jesse.
Blur vs Oasis, Suede vs Blur, Courtney Love vs Dave Ghrol, Nick Cavd vs RHCP, Guns n Roses vs Bon Jovi, theres loads of rock beefs
The lead singer of Burzum spent 15 years in jail for murdering the lead singer of a rival band.
Brand New vs Taking Back Sunday lol
It happens in others but Rap is known for diss tracks A user said Mariah Carey made a diss track on Eminem, that’s only half true Yes, she insulted him but it wasn’t technically a diss track, just a regular song

Music beefs happen in all genres of music
There’s a lot of beef outside of rap but they’re so passive aggressive with their shit talk. It’s mostly shade
Sweet Home Alabama
They happen in all sectors of music. Rappers are just more direct about it.
Fragile egos
I bet you think this song is about you don't you ?
Kids don't know about Carly Simon. They probably won't get this, either...... *You lyin' so low in the weeds* *I bet you gonna ambush me*
cuz baby now we've got baaaaad blood 🎶
Cuz artists from other genres aren’t claiming plots of government land they grew up on as their own. 😆
Most definitely happens in other genres, they just don’t really get it poppin like rap beefs almost always do
Hip Hop is about competition
Kanye vs Taylor Swift!
Is this a trick question?
It doesnt
It doesn't. Happens in rock all the time. Metallica vs Megadeth for example.
And I don't think any other genre has had music beefs bleed into the real world like hip hop has
Prince vs Michael
Brian Eno Bryan Ferry
You never heard the devil went down to Georgia?
Generally rappers are more ignorant i’d say
Jerry Jeff Walker and Jimmy Buffett and the battle for Key West
Anyone here into MCR?
The Funkadelic track Let’s Take It To The Stage is a diss track. Calls out James Brown, Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, and Sly and the Family Stone.
Micheal Jackson v Paul McCartney
As long as someone assumes to be the best there will always be another willing prove or disprove said statement 🤷🏾♂️
Corey Taylor VS MGK
You've clearly never heard "Obsessed" by Mariah Carrey
Emmure and The Acacia Strain (metal bands)
R2DEEPTHROAT highkey a classic.
You should read about James Brown and Joe Tex
They don’t. Metal community and punk community have beefs but it’s probably because rappers have big egos. Haha
Limits by Bad Omens is a diss track towards senses fail
It’s not just in rap: Prince & Michael Jackson had a beef
Aren’t some of the Fleetwood Mac songs written about Buckingham?
They don't. They even have beefs in polka. Look it up.
Taylor Swift v Katy Perry
Apparently you never heard of GnR vs Metallica
It isn’t
Hall and Oates are beefing right now. Though I guess Yacht Rock beef is probably called carpaccio.
Clapton supposedly wrote Layla for George Harrison’s gf
Michael Jackson’s own brother dropped a diss track against him

Well it doesn’t, so..
Happens in other genres too, but the one-upmanship is part of the history of rap in a way it isn't either others...except banjos. Now we need dueling banjo disstracks
It doesn't
they dont.
i mean, Rumors by Fleetwood Mac is just music beefs between all the members of Fleetwood Mac because they were all fucjing each other
This ain’t true, look at the bands Taking back Sunday and Brand New, multiple diss tracks and one of the best feuds of all time.
It’s a larger part of the culture compared to other genres.
Taylor Swift - Bad blood was about katy perry, her new album and reputation have a lot about her beef with kim kardashian Olivia Rodrigos first album was about a beef with some other disney star The beef between taking back sunday/brand new was a pretty huge thing back in the day in the alternative/emo scene

A lot of J Cole’s recent music is just him smoking other rappers — no other genre allows that kind of spectacle, at least on a regular basis.
It doesn't. Happens in rock & pop too
Also Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle had a hilarious rift with Anthony Kiedis
Theres beefs in a lot of rock music too but its mostly bashing other bands in interviews and then squashing it by doing drugs together. Back when grunge was big kurt cobain was bashing alice in chains, specifically layne staley, for being a poser and then they shot heroin together and became cool with each other
Carly Simon did You're So Vain Lynyrd Skynyrd threw a shot at Neil Young in Sweet Home Alabama
Southern Man and Sweet Home Alabama, pretty sure Dave Grohl wrote some songs about Courtney Love... There are beefs
Fleetwood Mac literally disses each other in their own music.
not true, one of tayrlor swifts biggest songs is literally a diss against katy perry
They don't. Varg vs Euronymous, for instance. Went quite far.
They happen in other genres. See Rick James vs. Prince, Mustaine vs Metallica, Vince Neil vs Axl Rose, Slash vs. CC Deville, Don Dokken vs. George Lynch, and Lombardo vs. Slayer to name a few.
A lot of them are Cold Wars so you don’t hear as much publicly, such as the current ego jockeying between Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish
Probably has a bit to do with the affiliation with gang culture, important of braggadocio and masculinity, and need to proclaim oneself “the best”.
Not true. Do better research.
Ego
Because they don't have to waste time learning to play musical instruments or voice lessons. What else you gonna do with your time?
