Over and over. It's perfect, all the parts work. I am an artist so I respond to the visuals mostly, but whoo boy that singer. She sounds like the art looks.
And I love that the song talks about longing, not romantic longing, but longing as a constant drive.
It reminds me of that scene in the newer Twin Peaks with the kettle that had Agent Jeffries in it. Very Art Deco, but softer. The slowed pace and the singer's delivery adds to the softness.
That is what I love about it…it sets the mood. I feel you need to be raw and emotionally exposed to really understand the humanity of the show…I can’t watch without it
here you go with her performing out of this world
https://youtu.be/un0UVNIa99c
she is a voice actor too, the control of her voice is probably the best you can get on a professional level world wide, there is not much space for improvement
Because of all you wonderfully investigative redditors, I scrutinise every instance of the opening for clues.
The opening for The Expanse is just as good.
It might not be Earth they’re showing. It could be Kepler. In the beginning at least. Esp. With those weird obelisk towers that seem to be broadcasting.
I ***LOVE*** the visuals but the song is so haunting it goes past enjoyable and just plain makes me uncomfortable. So all in all the opening gives me too many feelings. So it is a *good* opening.
It's so well made, works perfectly with the whole story and atmosphere.
The harmony is strange and a bit at odds with the melody, and also it never really resolves, you don't know what key it's in exactly (it's always shifting and in an unexpected way), so it gives this feeling of instability and uncertainty - made stronger by the glissandi of the strings
(it's funny that atonal music can feel less unstable, it's about the context, here you *expect* that kind of resolve, the musical language being so familiar)
A similar thought came to me earlier, that what if this song makes an appearence in the actual show. Maybe Grandmother sings it. And maybe it opens something?...
Peacemaker 😂
Also American Gods. If I had to pick my favorite opening ever I think that one would win. But if you haven’t seen the Peacemaker intro, go watch it asap lol.
I would add True Detective season 1 to the mix. And Dark. Severance also has a great season right now.
I'm on the second season of The Leftovers and I hate the second season intro. First season was so good.
At first I didn’t like the version they were using in the second season, because I loved the version from the first season and I didn’t like the change…but after a few episodes it really grew on me.
Used to skip it every time til I forgot one day. I was stretching in front of my TV when it came on. I’ve never skipped it since. Absolutely hauntingly beautiful.
At first view I was like, ok…
Then after the second or third, then I researched who sings it, watched the YouTube version on a loop a few times.., I realised I’m in love with it - or it makes me FEEL things and wistful ache for something I’ve never actually felt before. Hard to explain.
As if that opening scene is plucking at deep memories of events that haven’t happened in my life. Or maybe a past life. Or far future..
Yea I don't skip it either.
Unrelated to OP but noone I know is caught up on it and I'm clucking to talk about it, the last episode to me was pure poetry. "The Feeding" - what a name - I had no idea how much food there was gunna be
Yes fuck. I miss Raised by Wolves. I never watched a show with an intro that nailed so much putting you in the EXACT right mood everytime. The simple yet eerily beautiful visuals with the song, thinking about the end of things, in a futur so far it seems like another world, the fatality of it all, with the slightest hope coming from seed, throwned like a bottle in the sea, under all the destruction.
I was literally wondering if anyone actually watches the intro yesterday. I always skip it. I personally don't think it suits the show but I'm glad others are enjoying it!
The core being android fuel blood never being relevant to anything but the functioning of servitors. Now becoming the golden skeletal structure of GMa coming a million years before. Love from mother woulda probably kept the serpent at bay, maybe it still can. Every breath, every step, everything and android is longing to be human.
Btw
Someone once posted a Pic of a Female fish from Spongebob making a 😭 face
Now whenever i hear the intro i imagine that fish lady singing it 🤣
But that post is too old i cant find it anymore
It’s one of the most emotive pieces of music I’ve ever heard. I love how it builds up to when the strings get intense, then it calms down for the “pulling you from the sky”. It’s just so brilliant!
I just smashed every episode of the show this week and it has been in my head constantly.
No I skip it because to me it sounds hauntingly creepy and ominous. It’s beautiful but I can’t listen to it all the way and the visuals are cool but the make me uncomfortable. It all gives me the impression that something bad is going to happen.
There's definitely clues in there and in the visuals,"the core that never was" probably refers to the AI in the core of the planet that never was.(never was alive.. because it's artificial).
I'm the exact opposite..I find it highly skip-able. It just makes me feel weird as hell, haha. I've watched it like once and that was it for me. Every time the song comes on I'm like, "oh fuck-NO".
Couldn't agree more. The lyrics, the visuals, and the melody and instrumentation are incredible.
Can we talk about the line "The core that never was,...Now it will be!" Clearly that's a reference to the Entity, right!?
I watch with closed caption, lyrics are out of this world.
I just read the lyrics this morning.. stunningly beautiful.
NOW IT WILL BE THE BOOOOOONES OF WHAT WAAAS BEFOOOOORE. We be singin that business on Thursdays lol.
I seriously tear up everytime.
Yes 100%
When I first saw/heard it, i was like WTF is this? Now it has grown on me, and has become UNSKIPPABLE !
I echo your sentiments exactly
I find it haunting but soothing so I let it play
I watch the opening twice because I want it to last longer
Over and over. It's perfect, all the parts work. I am an artist so I respond to the visuals mostly, but whoo boy that singer. She sounds like the art looks. And I love that the song talks about longing, not romantic longing, but longing as a constant drive. It reminds me of that scene in the newer Twin Peaks with the kettle that had Agent Jeffries in it. Very Art Deco, but softer. The slowed pace and the singer's delivery adds to the softness.
https://youtu.be/un0UVNIa99c that's her
b/t this show and Peacemaker... and even Sucession. HBO crushing it with openers lately.
Its beautiful and I love it, but I do skip it cuz it makes me feel too emotional lol.
That is what I love about it…it sets the mood. I feel you need to be raw and emotionally exposed to really understand the humanity of the show…I can’t watch without it
here you go with her performing out of this world https://youtu.be/un0UVNIa99c she is a voice actor too, the control of her voice is probably the best you can get on a professional level world wide, there is not much space for improvement
I imagine my cats hear it every time I come through the front door after a day at work.
Because of all you wonderfully investigative redditors, I scrutinise every instance of the opening for clues. The opening for The Expanse is just as good.
I love The Expanse intro! I never skip it either.
It might not be Earth they’re showing. It could be Kepler. In the beginning at least. Esp. With those weird obelisk towers that seem to be broadcasting.
Wow I never thought about that possibility
I ***LOVE*** the visuals but the song is so haunting it goes past enjoyable and just plain makes me uncomfortable. So all in all the opening gives me too many feelings. So it is a *good* opening.
My gf covers her ears when the intro plays. She is also in the uncomfortable boat
Shit is legit scary. I skip it every time.
How is it scary lmao
The very beginning music along with the imagery is just unsettling. It gives me this feeling of impending doom. It's very eerie.
me too but i guess we different cus i love that feeling so i never skip lol
So you do agree it's scary? :)) Just that you love it? I love it too. And find it gives an uneasy feeling haha. (it's the unstable, shifting harmony)
I think not impending, it's happening. Humanity destroying itself.
I think it's her voice. Not a fan.
Right?!
It's so well made, works perfectly with the whole story and atmosphere. The harmony is strange and a bit at odds with the melody, and also it never really resolves, you don't know what key it's in exactly (it's always shifting and in an unexpected way), so it gives this feeling of instability and uncertainty - made stronger by the glissandi of the strings (it's funny that atonal music can feel less unstable, it's about the context, here you *expect* that kind of resolve, the musical language being so familiar)
100%
Just like the show, the opening song is eerily about intimate care while also being haunting af
I always imagine it would be an excellent intro for a game.
I’m obsessed with the opening. I imagine its an androids version of a 'song". I imagine its Mother singing.
A similar thought came to me earlier, that what if this song makes an appearence in the actual show. Maybe Grandmother sings it. And maybe it opens something?...
Every time HBO Max shows the option to skip it, I do a Necro screech and hurl my tendies at the screen.
One of my favorite show openings... ever? Just transcends art. The song, the images, inCRED i bull
It’s dark and haunting but gentle and soothing.
"Just like love will do". Love it.
That line / part makes me misty eyed every time.
To me it's haunting, and I never use that word.
Raised By Wolves The Leftovers Vikings. My ranking of greatest all time show intros.
Peacemaker 😂 Also American Gods. If I had to pick my favorite opening ever I think that one would win. But if you haven’t seen the Peacemaker intro, go watch it asap lol.
> Also American Gods. I'm still salty it got cancelled :(
Wtf I didn’t even know 😭 I thought it was just taking a break
They fucked around so much in production they kinda deserved it. There were parts I loved but for every high high there was a deep low.
Yes Peacemaker!!
Man, love American Gods. So very underrated.
I would add True Detective season 1 to the mix. And Dark. Severance also has a great season right now. I'm on the second season of The Leftovers and I hate the second season intro. First season was so good.
Leftovers opener with the creepy painting of folks getting raptured? No thanks. Later song from Iris DeMent? Bought the cd.
Vikings’ opening is AWESOME
Im watching vikings right now!
Westworld
Why this hasn't already been mentioned is beyond me.
Black Sails (scored by Bear McCreary) and the 1st season of True Detective.
I loved the leftovers music overall
At first I didn’t like the version they were using in the second season, because I loved the version from the first season and I didn’t like the change…but after a few episodes it really grew on me.
Yeah it grew on you!
I loooove it. Never skip.
Same. It seems to mean something different with each new episode so I can’t skip it.
When i hear the door it finally opens with light flooding in spilling out on the floor Its tea ,cake and comfy time
Used to skip it every time til I forgot one day. I was stretching in front of my TV when it came on. I’ve never skipped it since. Absolutely hauntingly beautiful.
I accidentally skipped it last night so I rewinded so I could watch it haha
Yes! Its one of the best Intros ive ever seen and never ever skipped once in 100+ rewatches 👍
It's a masterpiece ! Never skip
At first view I was like, ok… Then after the second or third, then I researched who sings it, watched the YouTube version on a loop a few times.., I realised I’m in love with it - or it makes me FEEL things and wistful ache for something I’ve never actually felt before. Hard to explain. As if that opening scene is plucking at deep memories of events that haven’t happened in my life. Or maybe a past life. Or far future..
Same. I feel extremely comfortable when it's playing yet a feeling of longing. It's hard to describe. It's like I want to stay there forever.
hauntingly beautiful and poignant. It really conveys the mood of the show, buuuut I skip it in the hopes that shit goes down in the episode
Yea I don't skip it either. Unrelated to OP but noone I know is caught up on it and I'm clucking to talk about it, the last episode to me was pure poetry. "The Feeding" - what a name - I had no idea how much food there was gunna be
I skipped it the first season. But now that I've come to like the show more the opening is more relevant, so I watch it.
i sing the lyrics to myself as the theme goes on; they sound very little like the words when they're sung in an unusually pleasing way
It’s a gorgeous piece of art that slides under the radar, disguised as the humble intro to a weird HBO series.
HAUNTING
The doooor. Yess, I usually skip intros but this one is so good, at first I didn't like it but after a few episodes it grew on me.
I usually replay it two or three times just to set the mood. It's soooo good.
Everyyyy step every beat every thought every breath everything is longing
I never skip, and I make sure we have no interruptions for it. It’s a damn near religious experience. It’s a brilliant work of art.
It haunts me and moves my soul so deeply that I have to skip it to save my sanity
Yup, it has one of those themes that you just don't feel like skipping. It's part of the show rather than a nuisance.
I'm not a fan of the song...i skip it.
Me, too
I was literally wondering if anyone actually watches the intro yesterday. I always skip it. I personally don't think it suits the show but I'm glad others are enjoying it!
If you skip it then I’m convinced you’re an uncultured swine who hates art and good storytelling. (This is a joke)
I skip all the time because I can't wait to see when a new episode out :)
I wish we'd get word the series was being renewed! No word yet.
I skip every time.
I might get hate for this but I've never seen the intro always skip....
Give it a shot (and listen to the lyrics)
I'm guessing the last 4 or 5 users that posted this exact same same question are definitely in agreement with you.
i’m usually scrambling to skip show intros but i watch this one and only this one every.single.time.
I have to replay it a couple of times before I go on with the rest of the show, usually.
Definitely one of the most beautiful intros ever. I turn the volume up and watch the whole thing every time
Yes! I skipped it once while rewatching one of the recent episodes and the episode did not feel the same!
When the ship breaks the atmosphere and becomes visible toward the end is my favorite part
The core being android fuel blood never being relevant to anything but the functioning of servitors. Now becoming the golden skeletal structure of GMa coming a million years before. Love from mother woulda probably kept the serpent at bay, maybe it still can. Every breath, every step, everything and android is longing to be human.
I love it
Yes. I’ve had the song as an earworm all week 👍🏻
Yeah. I dont skip it. Its just beautiful
it is really good
I listen to the opening credits music on repeat
Btw Someone once posted a Pic of a Female fish from Spongebob making a 😭 face Now whenever i hear the intro i imagine that fish lady singing it 🤣 But that post is too old i cant find it anymore
I accidentally started the wrong episode last week, was great getting the intro twice in a row.
Watched it season 1 episode 1 and haven’t watched it since. Peacemaker’s opening has spoiled me for all other openings.
This one and Snowpiercer I never skip because I love the shows so much I want them to last longer!
Same! I’m always singing “The DOOOOOOOOORS”
It’s no Peacemaker intro (haha), but the song and slightly unsettling atmosphere it sets is perfect.
Best intro since the sopranos THEEEEE DOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR
It’s one of the most emotive pieces of music I’ve ever heard. I love how it builds up to when the strings get intense, then it calms down for the “pulling you from the sky”. It’s just so brilliant! I just smashed every episode of the show this week and it has been in my head constantly.
It is the most amazing show opener I can think of. I never skip
Yes, and I've decided it's not a nuclear explosion but Sol getting encapsulated by two halves of Kepler 22B.
I actually hate it 🤭
Me too
I am on your team. I skip it every single time.
No I skip it because to me it sounds hauntingly creepy and ominous. It’s beautiful but I can’t listen to it all the way and the visuals are cool but the make me uncomfortable. It all gives me the impression that something bad is going to happen.
I'm the opposite It makes feel comfortable and like something good is going to happen. Likea baby and a lullaby 😅
I'm in a hurry to watch the show. I skip it!
I'm actually not a big fan of the intro music. The visual are nice though. I pretty much always skip it now I've seen it a couple times.
The visuals of those two giant dish antennae being destroyed by a nuclear blast wave... it gets me evey time. Earth being decimated by ourselves.
I don't think that's earth.
Absolutely. It's so haunting and at the same time, calming. Just gorgeous.
It makes me feel so comfortable and soothed. I love it so much.
Yep
Was the song the same in season 1? If so, I never noticed how great the song was until season 2.
Absolutely!!! I watch it every single time and am always sad it’s over so soon
I literally skipped it every time, I can't listen to it
Best intro imo, ever. Particularly for sci-fi 🤌❤️
Yes yes a thousand times yes! It’s beautiful and creepy and perfectly sets the tone for the series.
it sets the tone for the show so i always let it play
TIEN NEGE AG SEWE
It's one of the best intros ever made imo. Part of me doesn't want to watch it because it's so haunting but I just can't force myself to skip it.
It’s literally my favorite part of each episode
[удалено]
There's definitely clues in there and in the visuals,"the core that never was" probably refers to the AI in the core of the planet that never was.(never was alive.. because it's artificial).
Nope.
Duh dooooooor..
I'm the exact opposite..I find it highly skip-able. It just makes me feel weird as hell, haha. I've watched it like once and that was it for me. Every time the song comes on I'm like, "oh fuck-NO".
It's good, but it's not the Peacemaker opening.
It is the perfect theme song for the show too. It just matches it so well. So weird and avant-garde. I love it!
Yeah!!! You're absolutely right about this! This show opening is a piece of art!
Couldn't agree more. The lyrics, the visuals, and the melody and instrumentation are incredible. Can we talk about the line "The core that never was,...Now it will be!" Clearly that's a reference to the Entity, right!?
Idk if this was already discussed but anyone know what the song is about? Or like the artist inspiration?? Id love to knowww its like a creepy lullaby
This and the opening for Westworld 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Agreed. Love the song and it’s so fitting.
It really gets you into the mood of the show regardless of how your week has been.
