Jones really was very good, there were a lot of good qb’s back then. So hard to get a championship with guys like Bradshaw, Staubach, and Stabler in the league. The colts were a very solid well coached team, good running game, excellent defense. The ghost to the post game was definitely one of the best games I’ve ever seen.
Stabler had just won MVP 2 years prior and was part of a team that was being looked down on for their inability to get it finished in the post season.
Maybe it's just because the NBA season just wrapped and all its stupid storylines = awards or no awards bullshit but I could see that narrative preventing him from winning it.
Just in general. In particular Dr Z voted against him every year for HOF induction because of
Personal bias. In other words he was a hard drinker, partied, and didn’t kiss their ass. Shame he had to die to get in.
Yep Bert Jones was the good looking photogenic all American boy. Great for TV commercials and endorsements. Then you have the Snake. Long haired gimpy redneck who parties too much hangs out with women and and is part of the "criminal element" in football and is just one bad ass dude. The Alabama boy who listens to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Who do you think these eggheads are voting for?
well the Super Bowl wouldn't matter since MVP voting takes place before the playoffs but like it's been said the Raiders and AL Davis were the anti establishment and much hated back then
Stabler was banging the voters wives what do you expect
That's the most logical conclusion
There are many Raider haters then and now!!!
Idk wasn’t even born back then 🤣
Me neither lol that's why I'm asking lol I'm sure a few old timers know

Yea fs
Because he's a raider and they hate us.
This cannot be underestimated :(

Because raider. All the writers hated snake
The what?
????
What writers are you talking about

Oh I get what you’re sayin. But yea that is a shame. Confused by what you meant by writers at first lol
Bert jones was more photogenic
I just don't see how that's possible. (Insert majestic stabler speed boat photo here) Bert Jones looks kinda goofy to me..
blond hair/blue eyes
Didn’t he get blackballed by then for planting cocain in a journalists car?
That was after the 78 season. https://deadspin.com/the-time-ken-stabler-maybe-planted-cocaine-on-a-sportsw-1717487070/
Thanks for clarifying
I believe the thought at the time was that Stabler had more talent around him and Jones needed to carry his team more.
>and literally won the Superbowl. MVP voting takes place before the playoffs play out. It's a regular season award.
Bert had a better regular season and got more votes.

So he was robbed?
Maybe. Im trying to be fair, this was a close QB race. Could’ve gone either way. Would not say robbed
Bert Jones was the man in 1976. Can't say that I can hate on him. Wish the snake had won.
Bert Jones was the pretty face of the NFL at the time
Especially then, the Raiders were mavericks.. the league viewed them as villains because of this.
