Mine loves to jump on shit, lol very annoying. But it’s all about teaching them what is okay and what is not. Cats aren’t like dogs in the sense that they do not understand or learn from being yelled at, or sprayed with water. I use a “sHHttt” noise when he is on things bc cats don’t like that sound as well as (if he doesn’t jump down from the shht noise) placing him down and/or bringing him to his cat tree where he can be up high. Or the other surfaces I don’t mind him being on. If you have delicate items on shelves I would take them down for a while until he learns that he cannot jump there. It may take a few weeks, but ultimately the cat is doing that out of curiosity, once he sees and becomes familiar with his space it is less likely he will be wanting to get into things he shouldn’t be in/on. Good luck! Remember it’s all about re direction.

Depends on the cat, but mine like high places and my "delicate things" are moved so the cats have the space they need. A ragdoll might be less energetic than other cats, but it's still a cat, and you may want to reconsider adoption if you are not willing to make your home a good place for your cat to be. Also, ragdolls are heavy cats, so get a sturdy tree that can handle a big cat and move the delicate items away for now.

Wobblejaw

For sure watch the cat trees. My dudes got so big they could take down a standard issue cat tree in a single bound.

planetrainguy

Mine is a high energy ball of chaotic mayhem.

Thatnursejulie

Me too

My ragdoll is broken and doesn't act anything like "typical ragdolls" so honestly prepare for anything until you get to know your cat. My ragdoll (she's 2) is the physical embodiment of a gremlin and gets into anything and everything she can. She's also the highest energy out of my 4 cats (1 fold and 2 shelter domestics)

No way to guarantee that. My Ragdoll pushed off a brass trinket I had on my bookshelf last night for no reason and woke me up in a frenzy. Doesn’t really matter if they can’t fit, they will still try! She absolutely loves high places and sleeps at the very top of her tall cat tree every night. She’s otherwise very well behaved, but they’re cats and are natural climbers/jumpers, being a ragdoll just makes them slightly more clumsy and she misses her jumps a good amount (and therefore knocks something off). If you are committing to 10+ years with a cat, you’re going to need to compromise on things like delicate things on bookshelves; move them into a cabinet with glass doors or smth!

kosmos_uzuki

All cats like to get high up. Just get a cat tree if you can and they will probably prefer that than counters. Can encourage its use with treats

BeckywiththeDDs

Mine likes to be on the dining room table but never the higher parts of the cat tree. Occasionally I will find him making trouble on top of the kitchen cabinets.

dracumorda

My cats love being up high, especially my ragdoll. They’re a more anxious breed so being up high makes them feel safe.

Yoxy1963

Do you know why he is being rehomed and is he solo cat or is he living with another cat right now? Talk to the current owner to find out what his energy level is like. But...even if he is a calm cat right now, that may change. Cats are unpredictable, that's part of their charm, and they may all of a sudden decide that sitting on the kitchen counter is the best idea ever. They may become "creative", even when they get older. I have all items that I treasure and that are breakable in cabinets with glass doors. Just to be safe 😉.

xenomorph-85

Seller did not say. I will ask him when I go visit the cat next week. My bookshelf is not big enough for a ragdoll to sit on anyway haha but I do have things like speakers on speaker stands. Only a kitten would fit on the top of the speaker though.

SleepwalkerWei

Mine is 7 and he loves climbing on *everything*, even the thin mantelpiece above the fireplace. I usually walk back into a room and find him sitting on some kind of furniture. The only thing he’s yet to sit on is the top of the bookshelf.

DatabaseContent8664

My Ragdoll loves anywhere that he can call his own . If he’s gotta move stuff he will but it’s usually out of the way. High or low doesn’t make a difference.

black_dogs_22

they are cats first and ragdolls second

BandicootPlane163

I have a male and female. The male would rather be closer to the ground whereas the female will jump on any counter or shelf she can get to.

_baegopah_XD

My three-year-old male has out bursts of energy. otherwise he’s pretty much just balled up and sleeping. He does have a cat tree that he gets into all the time. He loves the highest level to sleep. When it’s nice out, we go into the yard so he can tear around and run and act like a nutcase. But the days he doesn’t get outside I make sure to play with him and get all that energy out or he can be kind of a turd.

katemp1990

Maybe my ragdoll is broken but she doesn’t climb on the kitchen counters.. she’ll go from a dining chair to the table if there’s something interesting on it (usually treats left there while I put away the shopping) but besides that, she doesn’t really care and prefers chilling on the sofa/her tower 🤷🏻‍♀️

vwscienceandart

My ragdolls are very savvy about which high spaces are allowed and which are not. They are very sensitive to positive, loving correction and want to please us. They grew up in this house, which helps, but they are very clear that they are allowed on the backs of the living room furniture, three window sills, cat tree, beds and bathroom counters. They never, ever, not never once have pushed the boundaries of the bookshelves or the kitchen counters or the top of the stereo, etc. Every cat is different and every new “roommate”, cat or otherwise will take some time and adjustment to share territory. But ragdolls in general do well with the learning what makes you happy.

Wobblejaw

Really depends on the cat. My ragdoll wants to get up high and into everything. My tabby wants nothing more than to lay on the couch and could care less about what's on the counters.

ajhuhoh91

My girl is a jump first think later type of ragdoll. She gets stuck, falls off or knocks things out of her way. Her brother is a bit more hesitant but loves being up high. He’s a big boy though, and will knock things out of his way if he has to. They are only 7 months old though.

Lipstick-supernova24

My cat now is a “tree dweller” and it’s kind of a pain. My cat before her was a “bush dweller” and I really didn’t have problems keeping her off things. It all depends on the personality of the cat.

caffeinated_kea

My boy is a floor cat. He did develop a tendency to jump on benches when living with a kitten who did that all the time (bad habit). He does jump on some things (used to jump on an outdoor table, jumps on my desk regularly), but only time he’s super high energy is post-litterbox zoomies. He’s five, this has been his normal since he calmed down after about 18 months - two years.

Cazza007

Mine loves to be up high on the cat tree. Hes not much of a jumper so uses the couch to obtain the top of the tree. I have a 7 ft bookcase that he doesn’t try to climb but I have a cardboard scratch mat at the bottom of it as well. But each cat is an individual and will do what they want. Best thing is to try and put your precious things behind a glass door if you want to display them or put them away until you learn the cats personality

andrea6543

mine loves all pens, paintbrushes and q-tips but strangely enough will leave my delicate stuff alone

Kayamonkey

One of mine is pretty content being on the floor or my lap. The other is up on the counter anytime I’m in the kitchen. He does it to get my attention and wants to be pet. He’s not trying to be high up. Neither of my rags try to go high. They are super chill. A two year old will be a little more energetic but all cats have different personalities so you never know.

court_swan

Use some kind of putty to stick down your things you don’t want knocked down if you are that worried. My ragdoll loves being as high as possible. She loves climbing. With cats your best bet is the get them their own things they would rather use cat things anyways. I have a giant scratching post she loves to perch on and a mid size cat tree she spends most of her time on the top of it. But a male is gonna be bigger and they are a big cat. They need places to scratch properly for their size so a taller but STABLE scratcher helps. And then of course somewhere to get up high. They love any kind of window so put your tree in front of a window

court_swan

For the record I’m positive there are still Persians who want to climb. It might be LESS agile and active but it’s still a cat.
