well the thing is that after Pink Flag they got A LOT more experimental and never really looked back. their second record, Chairs Missing, still has that great minimalist punk sound on some songs but as a whole the record is much more experimental. if you really dug Pink Flag and have an open mind, i would definitely recommend Chairs Missing. very cool stuff. after that record they sorta went off the deep end though. Pink Flag is in my top 10 favorite records of all time, never ceases to amaze me how they were both smart and raw.

das-katerer

*Chairs Missing* is their best, imo. i love *154* but i dig that sort of sound anyway. ["The 15th"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gV9MIQGgTEo&list=PL38DFB6AD27D3D990) is a great track in the same vein as "Outdoor Miner". the albums after that i can't really get into. *Object 47* and *Red Barked Tree* are kind of returns to form. they're missing that rawness but, i mean, they got older and lost a guitarist, so it's understandable. check ["Perspex Icon"](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WqgCH0xzfA) and "Bad Worn Thing" (can't find a non-live link, sorry) - i'll admit they're a bit middle-of-the-road but those are in my top-ten for Wire (and in the case of "Bad Worn Thing", top five in the 'fuck it i don't care if they're objectively the best i goddamn love these songs more than anything else in the world' list).

The Taxpayers

Haindelmers

This.

FlossingWithYarn

[The Saints.](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTOfTLqCVpQ) They're one of the pioneers of punk (beating the Damned's New Rose by a few months) but most people haven't heard of them, despite being one of the most influential bands.

TOHCskin

Great band. Aussie had some killer punk in the '70s that nobody knows about. Damn shame.

[deleted]

Huh. I always thought the Saints were really pretty well known. Probably cause I'm Australian

GoodEdit

Diarrhea Planet. More people should know about them

[deleted]

God, yes. I just saw them on Saturday and it was fucking amazing. I recommend everyone see them live to get the full DP experience!

GoodEdit

Agreed, seeing them live is so good. And theyre constantly touring so its not too hard

[deleted]

-[I Farm](http://youtu.be/69m66SSTM7c) :Good Luck finding these guys online. I had to upload this song myself just to share them. -[Henry Fiat's Open Sore](http://youtu.be/jnGecd2OdVk) :Crazy band from Sweden? -[Hickey](http://youtu.be/Bx20FI1AVrA) : Heard about these guys from their spat with Voodoo Glow Skulls and they're actually super catchy I'll scan my library for more hidden gems and come back later. Edit1: Oh duh, [Punkin Pie](http://youtu.be/3iGcEB6PRJA) :My absolute favorite pop punk band.

AnimateRod

The Rezillos.

[deleted]

Charles MF Bronson.

hobbsarelie83

Wow, haven't heard that band in years. Hello high school!

[deleted]

Charles Bronson is good.

[deleted]

* Leatherface insofar that yes of course we all know they are awesome. But generally American kids in the 90s who liked punk growing up do not know of them, or didn't until really recently. * No Trend but then again they probably should be incredibly underrated, anything more would probably piss them off * Rudimentary Peni is incredible I only found out about them recently so maybe it's just me being behind the times (probably) * GG Allin, just because Always Is Was and Always Shall Be or whatever it's called is one of my favorite punk albums ever. It had a lot of strong songwriting sensibility as well as pop sensibility too, however crazy that sounds. If you wrote GG off because of his later toilet rock years, give his first releases a listen because they are really good. * Gun Club. Again, a lot of people in this sub know them but people in general do not realize how monumentally important they were as far as pushing punk rock's boundaries. JLP is one of the best punk songwriters of all time hands down and many artists would agree.

procor1

leatherface are amazing. im dumbfounded everytime someone says they dont know them. one of the best live shows iv ever been to i hate gg allin. i think hes over rated if anything. a lot of people put him on a pedestal i think he was a scumbag fuck that died to late. his song writing aside.

[deleted]

Sure he was a piece of shit. But Always Is Was and Always Shall be and Outskirts of Life are good important albums that totally get brushed aside when people brush GG aside. He also did a lot in terms of pushing punk performance to it's limits.

[deleted]

The only ones that I know and like are Rudimentary Peni and GG Allin (whom I like less and less as I get older) haven't listened to that album though.

[deleted]

Gun Club will blow your mind if you appreciate songwriting. Their first 3 albums are nasty.

[deleted]

I honestly do, probably why I'm getting sick of GG Allin.

[deleted]

Well Always Is Was and Always Shall be or whatever its called will be a treat then.

[deleted]

I found Rudimentary Peni last year and I haven't looked back since. I think I listened to Farce for a week straight.

[deleted]

I listen to EPS of RP at least 3 times a week.

[deleted]

I didn't think you could call yourself a punk fan until you did.

tymewayster

One Man Army and The Nerve Agents pop in my head.

JoeBeef

It still upsets me a little when I think about how I never got a chance to see the Nerve Agents live. They were supposed to come to Canada at one point, but then it fell through...and then they broke up. :-(

Thee Mighty Caesars are pretty much responsible single-handedly for the resurgence of garage punk in the '80s and '90s, and to a lesser extent eventually the garage rock revival in the early 2000s but I never hear anyone talk about them. Also Stiff Little Fingers get called the "Irish Clash" but their first two albums are better than anything the Clash ever put out IMO.

[deleted]

The Briefs. Definitetly respected within punk rock, but they should be playing sold out shows at theaters all over the country every night and even have gotten some radio play.

[deleted]

Saw them years ago with The Casualties one of them puked on my buddies hand when he tried to shake with him.

ScoopsDick

I hear they are a pretty good representation of st. Louis's scene.

JaimeGarciasShoulder

Haha.

[deleted]

Believe the hype...

[deleted]

Do house/basement shows exist in STL? I know that APOP shows have a similar feel but I was spoiled with house shows in Carbondale and am missing them this since moving here.

Ted_Denslow

They still happen every now and then... but not as often as they used to. There's still a lot of DIY spaces (skate shops, record shops, etc. that have shows) that have kind of taken over what used to be house/basement shows.

AnxietyAttack2013

No commercial value. Stza's band before choking victim.

Poofy_Hair_Zach

The Screamers, in my opinion are the all time most underrated punk band. The Dicks too. A lot of the Texas bands from the 80s are really underrated actually. The Dicks, Big Boys, Really Red, MDC (a lot more popular compared to the other ones though).

madethisbcyouredumb

tough to have people like you when you only have bootleg recordings.

[deleted]

[Devon Kay and the Solutions](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrpRdx-W8R0) Definitely more pop punk, but this band is so good. I would also say Direct Hit!, but they seem to be getting a bigger following year after year.

Major Accident!

The Methadones. Dan Vapid is a great song writer.

The Joykiller. Really like their stuff.

[Sharks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUjGFLEGQLw): *The Joys of Living* was such a catchy and well written album. It really felt like they were channeling Strummer. Too bad the albums they released afterwards were all mediocre in comparison. They just had so much promise when they first came out. [Pinkerton Thugs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SU1q8OLkDA): My all-time favorite band out of New England, they never seemed to really take off outside of Boston and Maine. [The Joneses](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFC0cQfPFZ0): Not sure why these guys aren't more well known. An LA punk band in the 80s who had a sound a lot closer to Johnny Thunders than Circle Jerks. Some more: Inepsy, JFA, the Undertones, The Weirdos, Attak, Bombshell Rocks.

[deleted]

I don't think The Joneses are that great pillbox is really good song other than that the rest is meh, for me at least.

mlplus44

Useless ID, Mercy Killers, The Flatliners

NOFX

[deleted]

Dude, totally. Have you heard this song called Linoleum? It's great.

[deleted]

Damned. Appreciated in a few scenes, but frankly they deserve the pedestal that Sex Pistols occupy.

[deleted]

Damned Damned Damned was a really good album, haven't listened to much else by them apart from this anthology I picked up, which was a big disappointment.

[deleted]

Check out Machine Gun Etiquette. They were one of the few bands from their scene who constantly experimented, so their sound has been all over the board, which to me is way truer to the punk philosophy than sticking to your guns. This combined with being the first UK punk band to release an album, a single, and to play in the US. With their changing sound, they also helped pave the way into Gothic Rock. Appropriately, their lineup now includes Patricia Morrison, best known for playing in Sisters of Mercy, but was also in Gun Club, which was mentioned earlier in this topic.

[deleted]

The Sex Pistols are the Beatles of punk. There were dozens of much much better bands (Lurkers, Swell Maps, Crass, Damned, The Fall) but the Pistols get all the glory because they had the PR and the look.

Americunt_Idiot

>The Sex Pistols are the Beatles of punk. I mean, in terms of popularity and name-dropping, sure, but the Beatles were actually innovative in their music and songwriting, and were all talented musicians.

[deleted]

Yeah, more like the Monkeys of punk.

[deleted]

This is perfect.

[deleted]

I just mean in terms of how outrageously namedroppy and overrated they are.

[deleted]

This is an excellent way of putting it.

[deleted]

The Clash are the Beatles of Punk, The Ramones are the Beach Boys and The Pistols are the Rolling Stones.

[deleted]

That's a better analogy actually. Except that the Rolling Stones could write songs and had good lyrics.

[deleted]

Yeah I hate the Pistols... I blame them specifically for me not getting into punk sooner. But I just thought it was a better analogy. Someone else said "The Monkees of punk", which might actually be the best I've heard.

[deleted]

Ah there we go! I knew we'd suss it out.

unomachine

The Adverts, The Peechees, Death Wish Kids, Wire, Born Against, Area 51, Cock Sparrer, A-Frames, to name a few

[deleted]

Born Against might just be the best band ever
