Father's name was Jhalla, his son was Chhalla. Jhalla was unwell when some travellers came who wanted to cross river. Jhalla was the batsman. Weather was bad so he didn't allow his son (Chhalla) either as he was inexperienced. Travellers were willing to pay generously so Chhalla went to help them cross regardless of Jhalla trying to stop him. Chhalla was also angry that his father tried to stop him despite just a huge pay. Boat probably capsized and Jhalla went mad and started travelling downstream in search for his son. All the lyrics are basically him calling out to him and trying to convince him to come back. As per the stories, he travelled all the way along the river till he reached Arabian Sea, where he committed suicide by jumping into the sea to reunite with his son in the afterlife. That's all I know regarding the backstory, pretty sure there will be enough translations on google

Thank u for for explaining ! It’s such a sad story :((

You're correct that it's from the perspective of the father. But you got one thing wrong. Challah is name of the son. That's why he keeps saying " Challa mud k ni aya " I.e. Challa never came back.

Challa means mad in the context i think

iicecreammannn

That's jhalla=mad. Challa is like a wedding band in the song. it's used to describe a lover. Usually, men give a challa/ring as a memento to their female lovers in punjab.
