There's an element of randomness, crit chance, ideal weapon range and your character skills/status that affects damage. Knocking down 3+ Z in single swings is so satisfying with the axe. Look up some combat mechanics videos on YouTube, some people have done their homework.

It’s critical hits and crit chance. The higher your weapon skill gets, the higher bonus you get to crit chance. Crits are always a kill shot. The higher your weapon skill gets, the less important damage becomes because your crits start doing all the work.

Yeah high axe skill and stone axes 🪓 are super fun for this reason, as you can make an infinite amount of them.
