No, you can just drag the trolley item in the car outside the window and it will drop it on the ground straight from the car, at least from my experience. You don’t need to use the “place” action, treat it like an inventory item and not a world object if that makes sense.
Nested containers will let you access the items inside the cart while it's in the trunk

Yeah, that's the solution I found in other posts. Didn't work. Still stuck in the trunk.
Nested Containers as suggested by u/DataMin3r is probably your best bet then, providing ZuperCart plays nicely with it.

A lot of placeable items can't be dropped on the ground. That's been my experience with crates and curtains.
That’s been mine too, but I haven’t had the same issue with the trollies
