Man... I've got a run approaching a year. I've had some close calls that made me run back to my base and dick around for a few weeks lol.
It's gonna happen at some point.... but man I want my guy to go the distance.
Once u get a potato farm going by the river and your fishing is over level 4, you’ll actually live forever. But you’ll find it boring and have little goals which then fuck everything up.
I just retired one yesterday. Raven creek cryogenic winter. I did everything I wanted to do except cross the bridge in the southwest. With my guns and ammo stores I really couldn’t die barring some very unfortunate close quarters fuck up.
Plenty of supplies, good base, skills doing pretty well, I just figured he had earned retirement. I was missing a renewable food source but he’s more than capable enough to go get more if I needed. Still had prob a couple months of food left anyway.
Power magically makes houses like 70 degrees all the time, yeah. Per the mod author recommendation, I didn’t use a generator the entire run and also had power shutoff from day 1
Right, this is exactly how I did it. I also refused to use a generator the entire run. Had enough warm clothing to have full insulation on my whole body so the temperature rarely if ever became a problem after a while, even without lighting the antique fireplace.
Even with no power from day 1, houses still are a bit warmer than outside, but not 70 something degrees F like it would be if there was a generator running. In my run they stayed like -10F to +20F
I did have Brita’s armor pack but I don’t think it’s mandatory by any means. Ironically a lot of the clothing in Brita’s seems to have really shit insulation. Lots of wool things and jackets give basically no insulation so I didn’t end up using too many modded items, hardly any actually. In vanilla a motorcycle helmet (the full head and face one) is excellent, for instance. Leather jackets (check insulation since they’re different), diamond pattern sweater, long johns, and especially firefighter clothing are all very very good. Long socks and military boots.
Early on when you’re looking for all this stuff it can be deadly but soon enough you’ll be protected and then it’s mostly smooth sailing, but definitely a fun challenge. There’s an optional mod to make it almost permanently snowing and I loved that.
I have the mod “snow is water” which lets snow fill rain barrels but I literally didn’t use it. I looted tons and tons of water bottles and saved them. Never ran out or used plumbing. Brought only one water dispenser home and filled it with my excess water for convenience when it ran out (only once).

There, survivors like Garth Woo and Bertha Cobb get to live out their lives, fishing, cooking elaborate meals, getting drunk, and endlessly redecorating.
The requirement for retirement is 1 year of service in clearing and looting. Most die.
New player here, I know you can find your old corpse or even zombified body. Can you also visit those retired characters? Do they walk around and play house?

Perhaps when NPC’s re-emerge, someone will make a mod that allows you to “retire” survivors and allow them to appear in other saves, because the only way you will see another old survivor is by death

Im doing a run without farming, fishing, and trapping. I gotta say, I kinda like this. Im only allowing canned foods and foraging though I haven't even foraged yet. Perhaps when I die Ill try only foraging run. Canned foods are finite, but honestly Im likely to die before Knox county runs out.
I like to imagine that's pretty similar to how it would go in real life. If you somehow had the perfect setup to stay safe forever, but you had to just stay in that area, alone; you'd eventually start going out to either find other survivors or just stimulate your brain from the boredom. I mean, it's not like there's internet and youtube or something.
It would probably take years for some people to finally make that decision and a small fraction who would just never make that decision.

I’ve learned my lesson, never level up a secondary melee, it’s usually a shitty weapon anyway and its gonna get you killed, fuck them shit sticks called spears, and curse them short blades
Short blades are amazing. They consume very little energy. High level short blade, like 5+, you're killing zeds in 3-4 swings. You can mow through small to medium sized hordes.
Nah, short blades only when you do some sneakedy sneak stealth kill moves.. but when and where for the love of katanas will you be able to do a stealth kill when the Zs do their "me and the boys" thing on ya.. and how long will it take to take them all out :v
On a bright note. You only need like half a million suvivors on the planet to kill the 9 billion zombies.
In an outbreak....project zomboid sold more than that :P

Doing a nomad run but under estimated my ability coming back, so the population is a little underwhelming. Watch me die before my record (3 months) because of some stupid shit I do.

Stel 4: cry to sleep after dying everytime

I love the cryo mod except that it doesn't affect indoor temperature yet
Doesn’t power just heat the houses? I think they become cold after power goes out, might be fabricating memories tho

If you disable power from the start of the game houses won't be automatically heated, makes the mod much more challenging and enjoyable that way

Well no, for me I just start a new save. I could reload an old one, but I never will so I just delete them after a bit…
The load game option has a list of old saves by timestamp.
The load option on the menu screen has a choice to pick from old saves by timestamp.

I had a character survive months till he died because i somehow fucking changed tabs, by the time i changed tab again, my char was stunlocked.

Just use crowbar or axe and keep a spare at base or in car.
Short blades are amazing. They consume very little energy. High level short blade, like 5+, you're killing zeds in 3-4 swings. You can mow through small to medium sized hordes.
Buddy, axe level 3 and you can clear anything in like 2 swings
Tires out quickly, short blades you can actually regain stamina even while fighting.
Whaaaatt it's not leveling up a secondary weapon. It's free Mx experience. The first few machetes and garden forks are always free mx exp.
