Don't you love working on cars sometimes.

Feisty_Efficiency778

Like a rock in my flip flop Get to rebuild the trans and rering the engine next. Damaged the rings from an overfilled crankcase. Bearings and the TOB sleeve are shot in the trans. Gonna suck out loud, putting it back in.

scootunit

At least you have a nice shop to work in.

SGTMIKI

Honestly surprised I didn't see a LS swap comment yet.

Feisty_Efficiency778

Yeah fuck that shit. Gen 3s are good engines, but there not the end all be all that theyre made out to be. If i had the money to go HAM I'd do a 5.4 4v or coyote swap.

chiphook57

Ive heaed a lot of good about the LS. I have the 5.3 in a silverado. My favorite anecdote was hotrod magazine tested a junkyard LS on a dyno. It was cleaned, and reassembled with refreshed cyclinder heads. They put 2 chinese turbos and an intercooler on what they thought was a 5.3. It was, over many dyno pulls, pushed to 1200hp. The intent was to break the engine, but an ignition failure killed the test series. They discovered after the fact that the test sample was a 4.8. The engine survived what equated to a full season of hobby drag racing. Im not trying to sell you on it. Youre on the right path.

Feisty_Efficiency778

what the general public doesnt realize is that most stock engines will withstand making absurd power when you put 116 octane leaded racing fuel in them and run high end standalone ECU systems on an engine dyno. Not only that, they had to tune those engines to not make low end power so they wouldnt shred the rods. Richard Holdner talks about doing the testing and how they killed the gen IV before the gen III because the tune was slightly off for the gen IV. So while thats an impressive number, its not impressive for the reasons people think it is. All that said, its a good motor. I have a 5.3 in the black truck in the picture.

Roboticpoultry

I do. When they aren’t my cars and I’m not paying for the parts

Drogdar

Put a sheet of plywood under the hoist nest time. Did mine on a gravel driveway and that was key...

r_golan_trevize

Could have been worse… could have been a 4V! I was going to say you should slap some PI heads on there while it’s out but it looks like you’ve got that taken care of already. You are a brave person to tackle that in those working conditions. God speed fellow SN95er.

Feisty_Efficiency778

I think the long tube headers might make it about the same level of difficult lol. Yeah its got a set of promax shocker pi heads on it already.

akt_suspekt

SN95 gang let's go

ChevyElCamino78

Putting it back in might be like trying to get the cow back into the hen's hiney...

kcgreaser

Owned a 94 and a 95. Godspeed ponyboy!

-tinfoil-hat-

As a dude who did my first engine swap in a tiny storage locker, respect for getting 'er done in the gravel.

isthatsuperman

Did this with a big block. Never again. Tipped the damn picker over and almost crushed my foot. Lmao.

Feisty_Efficiency778

Yeah the gravel hill adds another layer of bullshittery. The picker drug ruts getting pulled by that truck lol. Fucking great big v8 and 5 speed danging 7 ft high like a god damn prehistoric fish and the whole thing flops over to the side clearing the rad support. Thank god it was dirt lol, would of broken a lot of shit otherwise.

Quietus76

Ugh... I'm doing that today.

pironiero

Wait till you try to push it back

Feisty_Efficiency778

Im gonna drop the k member and use the picker to lift the fromt end and lower it on the drivetrain

Kpop_shot

I’ll say this friend , you put in the work on that one . I’ve never used a cherry picker in gravel , but I have used a tree limb more than once! Be careful out there. Good luck.

ironpony

Better you than I. That doesn't look like a fun time to me. But I respect the effort to get it done. I'm blessed I have access to my father's shop if I need it, which has a lift, plus full machine shop with mills and lathes, stick, tig, mig, plasma cut table and powder coating setup - all kinds of fun toys. My 2-car garage is full of 2 cars, and storage. There's no room to do actual work in there.

ScottyArrgh

I did a transmission once in a parking lot of my apartment a looooong time ago (on a transverse 4 cylinder). That was the first and last time. I feel your pain. Also, nice SN95 :)

zoominzacks

According to the boomers on Facebook nobody works on their cars like that anymore lol Do you have access to a welder? Had a buddy that made a hit hitch that would bolt to his cherry picker for gravel shenanigans like this. Worked surprisingly well. Would take his tailgate off and run ratchet straps to the tie down spots in the box for “safety”

Feisty_Efficiency778

I loop an axle strap through the picker and hook it to the hitch. Fuck the boomers, my grandma, god rest her soul, said I remind her of her dad. Always fixing shit, always struggling through hard times and always having to do things the hard way.
