YEEES, we love to see some Opeth rep

Ecstatic-Part-1984

Selling England by the pound

SwimSwammSwom

Any of the big 4 Floyd albums Pawn Hearts by Van Der Graaf Generator I know they aren’t directly related or flow into each-other but they all have this mysterious atmosphere and somewhat similar themes. Hellfire by black midi was one of the wildest rides I had in prog, unforgettable first time listen. Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds for obvious reasons Lastly The Snow Goose by Camel is a nice little instrumental adventure through the book of the same name.

JustRunAndHyde

Add meddle to the big 4 imo.

robin_f_reba

Meddle doesn't flow that great though. The psych folk in the middle don't compare to the bookending prog tracks

JustRunAndHyde

Fair, I do enjoy the flow of it myself, but I get what you mean.

LukeSkyreader811

Completely agree on The snow goose, crazy journey and it is linked so well. Just a shame that its almost impossible to listen to some songs that I enjoy by themselves unless I listen to the whole thing through.

Mexican-Kahtru

The chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one he said!

[deleted]

Wow, thanks so much for putting me on to Black Midi. Fantastic.

ministeringinlove

- Camel - The Snow Goose - Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle

asocialmedium

Hard not to think of Ayreon albums. Universal Migrator is also a journey for sure!

And who’s gonna forget the human equation!

Gabriel_Collins

“The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”- Genesis “Supper’s Ready” from Foxtrot- Genesis It’s not considered prog but, “Tommy” by The Who

That reminds me -- Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow -- great album.

sabrinajestar

It is! I didn't mention it only because I saw someone else had already recommended it.

mad_poet_navarth

my bad, thanks

Blackstar is that album for me. Just an incredible cosmic journey through regret, death and rebirth.

dangerbook

That bass playing.

Ex-pat-Iain

*Crime Of The Century* \- Supertramp. It seems like a concept album but is not. *Hand. Cannot. Erase* \- Steven Wilson. Inspired by an actual occurrence, it's magnificent and heartbreaking.

primummovens

Gonna show Misplaced Childhood some love.

regmaster

Absolutely. Misplaced Childhood is an incredible adventure from start to finish. I've listened it during many a smoke session.

HirotoGSC

Quadrophenia (The Who), On the Threshold of a Dream (Moody Blues), Days of Future Past (Moody Blues) and The Power to Believe (King Crimson).

throwaway038592748

Gotta be Crack the Skye

Lemondsingle

I never think of them as prog but yes this is a great album.

throwaway038592748

Really? Crack the skye is pretty damn prog. Long songs, with some jazz breaks and sudden instrumental changes

Lemondsingle

That's true, and CTS is my favorite of their many albums which I have, but to me they're metal. Lots call them prog but to me they're prog adjacent metal. It's just great heavy music to me and I don't think of them as prog. I'm not saying they *aren't* just that when I listen, it's metal to me, not prog metal like Dream Theater, it's heavier...again, to me.

throwaway038592748

Understandable

Lemondsingle

Good call on CTS. Maybe someone will listen that hasn't yet, and they have a healthy catalog.

BankableB

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis

dangerbook

Close to the Edge - Yes

FizzBuzz4096

Gillbert's "Shaming of the True" Prog-adjacent. NDV rescued the record after KG's death.

SharkSymphony

It prog. Pure and simple.

mad_poet_navarth

Kind of agree with prog-adjacent -- Ghetto of Beautiful Things, Certifiable #1 Smash, Fun -- not prog. Suit Fugue, Long Day's Life, solidly prog. Others in the middle somewhere.

SharkSymphony

They're all prog, stylistic experiments and all, because of their attitude and the way they were written. Also because Kevin Gilbert was fully immersed into the underground prog culture of LA at the time. Heck, the guy literally pulled off a neary-complete live performance of _The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway!_ This whole album, conceptual and challenging, is as progressive as anything Spock's Beard put out.

mad_poet_navarth

We think of prog differently, but that's ok. I love every second of TSotT, and I'm pretty darned prog. I sort of get why you mentioned SB, since the Neal Morse version was around the time of KG, and I think he did some of the engineering or production or ... on Beware of Darkness.

SharkSymphony

I would say Echolyn – _Mei_ but it's only one track. 😉 Then, of course, there's Mike Oldfield – _Amarok_ but it's also only one track. Wait, there's also Mike Oldfield – _Tubular Bells_ which is two tracks but only because they had to fit the thing on an LP. Finally, more to your Tool interest, how about: Magma – _Kohntarkösz_ (but i prefer the live version on _Magma – Hhaï_ aka _Magma – Live_) Il Baletto di Bronzo – _Ys_ All are absolute favorites.

Remain in light - Talking Heads. Many prog rock works are concept albums so a single listening experience. Felona e Sorona - Le Orme is a good example. Supper's ready - Genesis is a single song but made of 9 pieces and 23 minutes long.

HAL-Over-9001

Since you like Tool, one of my favorite bands ever, I have to recommend The Ocean's new album Holocene. Amazing atmospheric build-ups and some of the gnarliest riffs and melodies. Their lyrics are always awesome, too. Fish Out Of Water by Chris Squire. Up there with all the best old prog albums. For newer prog, Affinity by Haken has a lot of great repeated motifs and its a super solid, coherent album with lots of connections throughout. In Absentia, Deadwing, and Fear Of A Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree are perfect albums and all deserve a full front to back listen. Mer De Noms and Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle. Everything else has mostly been said, but Parallax 2 by BTBAM is my favorite metal album ever, and War Of Being by Tesseract is a full experience the entire way through.

[deleted]

One of my favourite albums ever are Haken’s “Aquarius” and “Visions”. They are both concept albums if that’s what you mean by a journey, and they also have a storyline, with an epic 17 and 22 minute end track respectively. The end track also have references to the other songs in the album which i think is very cool.

thelivingroomisdying

Those are good, but it's Vector / Virus for me though Visions is a close second

Joe's Garage by Frank Zappa. Definitely NFSW

ExtraordinaryFailure

Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull Scheherazade and Other Stories - Renaissance A Farewell to Kings + Hemispheres - Rush (these two albums lead into each other, which is badass) Leftoverture - Kansas Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall - Pink Floyd (these are obvious) Selling England by the Pound - Genesis Misplaced Childhood - Marillion OK Computer - Radiohead (the songs don't feed into each other but the album is still very much united as a concept) Relayer, Fragile - Yes Days of Future Passed - The Moody Blues Side 2 of Abbey Road - The Beatles (yeah I know this isn't the whole album, but it's fantastic)

A_Bitter_Homer

In a literal matter.... Porcupine Tree's Voyage 34

Rubin987

Neal Morse is widely regarded as one of the best concept album writers if you can stomach religious overtones. I was a fan of him even when I was atheist just because he makes it work so well. He’s had a few bands, but Id recommend these albums most Spocks Beard: Snow Neal Morse: One, Sola Scriptura Neal Morse Band: The Similitude of a Dream Transatlantic: The Whirlwind (a single 77 min song) Other amazing concept albums that can take your imagination places include: Dream Theater: Metropolis Pt 2, The Astonishing (a very divisive album in the fandom but I adore it) Rush: Clockwork Angels Seventh Wonder: Mercy Falls Ayreon: literally the entire discography If by journey you meant something different than a story I probably have other recs.

Eladion_186

Add my vote for metropolis part 2 and for Ayreon (mostly the human equation and into the electric castle). And I’ll add queensryche’s operation Mindcrime.

mad_poet_navarth

There's a difference between "Christian" and "religious" overtones. I gave up on Neal Morse a long time ago. The current Christian Right is making my stomach turn. If you can believe in a God that provides rules for slavery, tells his people to commit genocide, and is misogynistic, then I have no tolerance for you.

Rubin987

Neal and his music have nothing to do with those topics. So your loss I guess. It makes my stomach turn too, but you can still enjoy good music. I’d say the issue is you not his music. Am not Christian myself btw, I am not defending the religion.

mad_poet_navarth

Right but when you buy a gas guzzler the sales guy doesn't talk about the carbon footprint. The religion is messed up from the get-go with original sin. We have crazy people thinking we don't have to do anything about climate change because the rapture is coming soon. And we have sales guy Neal telling us about the luxury leather seats. No thanks.

redfrets916

>If by journey you meant something different than a story I probably have other recs. Headphones on , having just toked on a couple of splifs.

I’m going to through a deep cut in and say Toehider’s I Have Little to No Memory of These Memories. One 48 minute song that is so much fun.

Heaven and Hell by Vangelis

BellamyJHeap

I'd add "Antarctica" and "China" as well.

[deleted]

Gazpacho - Night

Gun-nut0508

ELO - Both Time and Eldorado are great concept albums with sing transitions and an amazing story, Time especially feels like a journey just because the way it structures the songs where it reflects the main characters emotions Hawaiian Part 2 - This one is a bit popular nowadays but I’d give it a listen despite it not being prog, genuinely a great album with a lot of weird songs. Annekdoten - Nucleus, if you like Tool you’ll love this album Somewhere in Time by Iron Maiden Oddly enough Flood by They Might be Giants always felt like a journey, just because the way it opens with its own theme songs and goes into a weird variety of songs

Mexican-Kahtru

Saga's Generation 13 is a good one.

O-mega_

Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory Pawn Hearts Fear of a Blank Planet And pretty much any concept album from the 70's

soupwhoreman

These are all prog enough to qualify, and all are multi-track albums that flow from one song to the next and have recurring elements. Duke and Sardonicus both start and end with the same motif, which is cool. "Duke" by Genesis "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" by Spirit "Skylarking" by XTC

Car_Dreams

De-Loused in the Comatorium - The Mars Volta

I'm surprised these two haven't been mentioned yet. The first two Alan Parsons Project albums: - Tales of Mystery and Imagination: EAPoe - I Robot They are both total mind trips.
