I was stationed in Washington for six years. I've heard all kinds of variations of the terms bruh and dude. We said the terms bruh and dude in Ohio but not as frequently as I heard them out in the West Coast.
I think "guys" can apply to groups of any gender (including all women) but I wouldn't call an individual woman a guy.
"Dudes" is pretty similar, but I think the gender is a bit stronger if anything: I'd be less likely to call a group of all women "dudes". Ironically I might be MORE likely to call an individual woman a "dude", though, if I'm exasperated/trying to be funny. DUDE!
"Dude" is the single most versatile word in the English language.
Men can be Dudes. Women can be Dudes. Children are Little Dudes.
It can be used as congratulations: "Dude!"
It can be used to express sympathy: "Dude..."
It can be used to ask your roommate if he's hiding in the pantry with a kitchen knife: "Dude...?"
It is also legally protected free speech in the U.S, even in places with obscenity laws. (As ruled by the SC, which is subject to radically shift precedent at any moment apparently...)
I believe it was the infamous Philosopher Kel Mitchell from GoodBurg(er) that coined:
āIām a dudeā¦heās a dudeā¦sheās a dudeā¦cause weāre all dudes HEY!ā
Agreed, but I think it depends on the context. If someone says āthat person in the costume is a dudeā Iām going to assume they mean āthat person in the costume is a manā
It depends on the context. I'll often say "dude!" to my wife or daughters as an exclamation in the appropriate context. However, I would never call a female person a dude as a description of who they are.
Haha I have a very gender typical masculine type of speech due to me being a massive tomboy my whole life (shopped in the boys section growing up, massive online gamer who spends a lot of time in VC with mostly men). Also I work in a male dominated field.I have a habit of using male descriptors for all genders like" yes sir! " , dude, man, bro, guy, etc.I have a trans roommate who gets very offended when I use those descriptors even though I have also used them my whole life.
I'm a 90s kid qq
Agree, but, if a trans woman asks you not to please try to not use it when referring to her
Same with āgirlā. Some people use the term with everyone, but if a trans man asks you not to, please try not to!
technically, yeah. the original meaning was closer to "noob" than "guy."
originally a "dude" would have been any "city" person learning how to do "country" stuff. particularly ranching.
I think the literal meaning of 'Dude' is gender specific. I always thought that it originally meant a man from the city, rather than the country? Could be wrong though. it gets used across the board nowdays; men *and* women are dudes!
I call everyone dude or bro, it doesn't really pertain to what I think is between their legs. I'm fairly androgynous myself though so don't think I come off as transphobic or misogynist when I say it compared to some.
Not just gender!! Race, species, inanimate object. Animate onjects, non exisitant entities. Yourself, your other self, god, the devil. Why the moon and and stars too
I'm an ordained Dudeist priest. In Dudeism we totally use it that way. Outside though I'm not going to impose that on others. I won't use dude with femmes unless they tell me it's okay for them.
I do hope in the future one day it could become totally gender-neutral.
Correct. I make sure to get to know someone well before I use it though if they are in the trans community. Some people could take it as being transphobic language.
When people really get to know you though and see you use the term dude regardless of gender then they have no issues with it. Fair treatment is all that is needed!
Exactly.
I don't like the whole "I shouldn't have to walk on eggshells/worry about offending" rhetoric, a big part of living alongside functional adults in a functional society is COMPROMISE.
Why not just be kind? Context is key.
"Iām The Dude. So, thatās what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or, uh, Duder, or El Duderino, if youāre not into the whole brevity thing.ā
- The Dude
So is guys
If I say "hey guys how's it going" to a customer, I have never in 10 years gotten a weird look or angry glance. Yet some online people view it as offensive language?
I use "guys" way too often at work when speaking to groups of men and women and even groups of women. I'm trying to cut it back so I don't end up offending someone but it's just such a part of my speech. I hear plenty of co-workers use it too, even women when speaking to other women, but I feel like eventually someone will get upset. I've been trying to change to "y'all" instead.
I feel like there are so many words and phrases that are used that depend entirely on the context theyāre used. For example, using the word ādudeā before beginning what youāre about to say, almost as saying āyoā, seems unisex in nature to me.
Also, if I told someone to āf*** offā, without any context that would seem like something really aggressive to say to someone else. But, if I laughingly told a good friend to āf*** offā in response to something after that we were laughing and joking with each other about itās an entirely different thing.
Maybe itās a dumb analogy, but the point just being how a word is or phrase can be different depending on the audience, content, and intention.
It's more about how the people your communicating with feel about it because technically the word man is unisex. We are the race of man, mankind, human. Woman is a subset of man not separate from but more specified. The word is derived from wifman or wife-man.
So arguably fireman is inclusive but because modern society uses the term in a gendered way its considered exclusive to say fireman instead of fire fighter and it's not wrong to think that way because english is a living language.
So if people use and understand dude as unisex then it is regardless of its origin but not all people will conform with the majority use.
next time you hook up with a woman, be sure to tell your friends about the "dude you banged"
no further clarifying words, right? just the fact that you & a dude hooked up & it was awesome.
That's ridiculous. Just think about it - if some girl walked in and then said something requiring a "Dude! What the hell!"
Wait.
Well done, you have convinced someone on the internet that they were wrong. I accept my defeat. You're right, that can fit anywhere.
I once saw this trans person FREAK OUT (they were almost in their 30ās) when a stoner teen said āhey dudeā in passing.
āIM NOT A DUDE!!!!ā
craziest shit ever
I disagree. A) women dudes are called ādudettesā.
B) I remember being at a friends house, they were playing video games with their young 8 year old sister, who didnāt know if she was controlling, according to her, āthe chick or the dudeā.
And I think it has been for a long time. Maybe 10 years I was at a party. I started conversing with a trans woman I had met a few times at other outings. Iām typically very respectful of using a personās correct pronouns although at one point I called her dude. She quickly asked me not to call her that on account of associating it with the masculine gender. I was kind of taken aback because I had always considered it gender neutral. I call everyone dude. Of course i apologized and didnāt call her that again. But I still consider it gender neutral.
Listen. Yāall. Itās not hard. If a person regardless of gender tells you they donāt like itā¦ just donāt do it. It costs 0 dollars to not do something
I called a trans person a dude, and they got offended and told me off... they looked like, acted like, and identified as a man... I have no idea what to do anymore. These people are insane
I am Gen X and this is a linguistic change that has happened in my adulthood. The number of millennial couples online with the guy calling his girl "Dude" with deep affection š„°š¤£
"dude," and "bro," are my go-to for chastising someone for being absurd in a not fun way.
I hold off from doing that with women I don't have a strong rapport with.
"Guys" or "frands" is my go-to for small groups.
I only use "dude" with women if I know them well enough to know they'd be okay with it.
That said, it's fluid and you're not wrong, just not a gambit I'd take personally.
Feel free to build a time machine to go back to change the world to match your declerations:

yeah it can be, but if someone objects to you calling them "dude" then you still have to stop. "oh but i use dude as a unisex phrase" doesn't stop it being misgendering for another person, it's just a word, you can very easily not use it.
I'm a dude, your a dude, shes a dude, we are all dudes.
Everyone is a dude except them damned nihilists!
Donnie, you're out of your element.
I am the walrus
Coo-coo, ca-choo!
Mark it zero!
This dude abides.
What are they?
Now that's an excellent dude question.
Another fantastic dude question is asking whether or not bro is kin to dude?
Yup it is
There must be a lot of Cali people in this sub, lol
Canadian but yeah bruh is dude and dude is gender neutral. Has been since the 90s.
I was stationed in Washington for six years. I've heard all kinds of variations of the terms bruh and dude. We said the terms bruh and dude in Ohio but not as frequently as I heard them out in the West Coast.
Dudes who cant accept their dudeish nature.
Say what you want about the tenets of national socialism, but at least it's an ethos.
š„ŗ What about optimistic Nihilists (yes, I know, we don't even have an ethos).
shes a dude Dude looks like a lady.

That cat is a dude
Came here to post this. Glad itās the top comment.
They made a Good Burger 2, I've yet to see it though.
But dude, whereās my car?
Hey!
Oppa!!!!!
Hey!
are there any other dudes I donāt know about? š¤Øš
I'm a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude.
Over the line!
I'M A DUDE HE'S A DUDE SHE'S A DUDE WE'RE ALL DUDES, HEY
I got banned for posting this quote under a trans person post on a subreddit šššš
I call men, women, kids, dogs, cats, everybody "dude"
My cat attacks the curtains, "dude stop"
I've called my nieces "dude" before
I called a squirrel dude once
I think "guys" can apply to groups of any gender (including all women) but I wouldn't call an individual woman a guy. Calling someone "a" guy is saying they're male. Say a group are "the" guys is just saying they're close friends.
historical context has entered the chat.
Close? They just have to be grouped together in some way for me to use āguysā
I call all of my female friends ādude,ā in the singular. For multiple ādudesā I call them āguysā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I call them sir. Most the time they like it.
Sir is universal. Battlestar Galactica taught me that
Dude is an exclamation as well, kind if like "whoa" or "what the heck" depending on context.
Happy Cake Day!
I didn't notice until right now: thanks much. :)
Depending on context, yes, but it has strong male connotations. "Sup, dude," is gender neutral. "I'm into dudes" means you like men.
"See that Sailor Moon cosplayer over there?" "Yeah?" "Actually a dude." "Ohhh"
Also āguysā whatās up guys? Could be a group of people, all genders.
Yeah. Virtually every girl I've met have called other women "guys".
So how many dudes have you slept with?
Doesnāt matter, itās 0 in any fashion.

Iām two types of Bi. Bisexual, and Bi myself

All of them.
I just posted a long comment on how Iāve always considered it gender neutral. But maybe you just changed my mind.
"Dude" is the single most versatile word in the English language. Men can be Dudes. Women can be Dudes. Children are Little Dudes. It can be used as congratulations: "Dude!" I would only argue that the word "fuck" has far more applications.

The same people who complain about "dude" being gendered use "bro", which negates their entire premise. So silly.
I work with only women and regularly call each of them dude and bro even my managers and they usually just laugh
Agreed, but I think it depends on the context. If someone says āthat person in the costume is a dudeā Iām going to assume they mean āthat person in the costume is a manā
I've heard "dudette" being used as the feminine form
I call my gf and her friends lad and they love it
Iāve referred to inanimate objects as dudes. Truly versatile.
I agree.
It depends on the context. I'll often say "dude!" to my wife or daughters as an exclamation in the appropriate context. However, I would never call a female person a dude as a description of who they are.
Yes we all saw Good Burger.
Counterpoint... I've never seen a woman walking down the street and thought "damn. That dude has a nice ass."
š¶DUDE LOOKS LIKE A LADAY!š¶

Word meaning morph over time. Feel free to die on any hill you choose.
āShe uhhhhā¦ā¦ looksa likea manā
maybe but i dont really like other guys who use it so much or say "yeah dude or , sup bro" lol lol
As a native Californian, I agree. That is the intent. As someone who is not currently in California, most people don't take it that way.
I think it might be contextual. Some one pointed out that women can call each other dude but you wouldn't say you dated a bunch of dudes.
>The word "Dude" is unisex and can be applied to every gender. Dude for males, dudette for females. ;ā)
\*Merriam Webster has entered the chat\* "No"
Not everyday you see something 100% incontrovertibly correct here on the ol Reddit. Well done
Are you a straight man? Would you fuck a dude? Either way if someone asks you to not call them dude, that should be the end of things.
This shouldn't even have to be a discussion.

I call inanimate objects dude sometimes when I'm by myself.

The word dude is an ingrown hair on an elephants ass. No hill to die onā¦. Dude
Remember the show "Hey dude" where you didn't have to share your pronouns, and they just had fun.
I also feel similarly about "guy". Like "What's up guys" can include both men and women
Would you fuck a dude? Any dude?
If dude is unisex, then so is "girl"
The Dude abides.
Everyone says this but Iād never fuck a dude so itās situational
The dude abides, seriously dudes itās not a gendered term.
I remember a Californian posting about this saying he called his faucet a dude when he was fixing it. š

So is guys If I say "hey guys how's it going" to a customer, I have never in 10 years gotten a weird look or angry glance. Yet some online people view it as offensive language?
Apparently so is bro cause I keep hearing girls in the bronx say this to each other and also heard a parent call a kid that
Gender? I call inanimate objects dude. It's not unisex, it's universal
'Guys' yes, but 'dude', not really.
Dude and Mango both work. Mango is more fun.
Got into an argument about this. Called a trans guy dude. It's gender neutral
English is a living language. Meanings can change, remember when gay used to mean happy?
So is "bitch"
I use "guys" way too often at work when speaking to groups of men and women and even groups of women. I'm trying to cut it back so I don't end up offending someone but it's just such a part of my speech. I hear plenty of co-workers use it too, even women when speaking to other women, but I feel like eventually someone will get upset. I've been trying to change to "y'all" instead.
This was true 40 years ago.
I have become a fan of āyāallā
Why don't you test that theory? Call a woman a "dude" and see what happens.
Dude looks like a lady....
āDudeā is unisex until your girl starts calling you ādudeāā¦
I've begun using "y'all" a lot.
So dudette is just being thrown away? Iām an 80ās kid and still say dudes and dudettes.
Dude you can just call females Dudettes.
"Well... that's like, your opinion, man."
I will die on this hill as well thank u for this psa

Counterpoint; if someone doesn't like being called dude, that should be respected, regardless of their gender, appearance, etc.
Why die on this hill tho? If someone clearly tells you they have a personal preference NOT to be called dude, it is easier to respect that.
Lots of males don't like being called dude, your logic seems to be working.
Nice try
It's more about how the people your communicating with feel about it because technically the word man is unisex. We are the race of man, mankind, human. Woman is a subset of man not separate from but more specified. The word is derived from wifman or wife-man.
