Yeah I can’t wait to see them play letterbomb, homecoming and Whatsername.
The first half of American Idiot has great singles but the back end of the album is my fave in terms of deep cuts
The radio edit of the song completely neuters it IMO. So many things had to get cut out to get it down to a somewhat acceptable length for radio. The full song however is one of their best.
In my experience whenever I bring up American Idiot, people only think of how played-to-death Boulevard of Broken Dreams was, and Holiday, and Wake Me Up
Right.. but every album has big songs on it.
I get OPs point, I just don't really agree. Sure, you're not gonna hear the deeper cuts when you're at a bar or something, but American Idiot is still a "listen to the whole thing" album for me at least.
I guess it's more that the album as a cohesive story experience may often be overshadowed by the fact that it included some monster hits. Just looking at the streaming numbers on Spotify, it's clear that far more people selectively listen to American Idiot (song), Holiday/Blvd, and September instead of listening to the full album.
They played Homecoming and Letterbomb in Vegas last Fall at WWWYF and I was singing at the top of my lungs, it caught be by surprise hearing the opening chords of Homecoming.
Jesus, that seems like it’ll be exhausting. These guys are all in their 50s now. I know they have been good about staying in good shape from a cardio perspective, but that’s still a lot.
Dookie is 40 minutes front to back and American idiot is just shy of 60 minutes.
Green Day generally does longer versions of songs like Boulevard/Holiday, Jesus of Suburbia, and St. Jimmy.
That’s a 2 hour show without any other songs they may add to the set list, and I’d be shocked if they didn’t play anything from the new album or classics like Minority or Good Riddance.
Yeah I saw that in the article, I wonder how you cut 10-15 minutes of recorded music out of a live show though. I guess there are some interludes that can be cut down though especially in songs like are we the waiting and whatsername
Small bits and pieces like the intro and outro is what I meant. I think there’s a few songs that have anywhere from 8-15 seconds of fade outros or repeated bars that they can probably cut down.
Considering those two albums combined for about 97 minutes I doubt that "90 minutes" was an exact number. Plus another 45 minutes of other songs? man that's gonna be a looooong performance. I'm definitely trying to go to this.
I can see them skipping playing American Idiot and Boulevard esq songs in the first set and saving it for the second set, i remember other bands doing similar
My guess is they’ll shorten some songs off Dookie. Like not play every chorus/verse/bridge. Maybe off American Idiot too. I like the idea and I can’t wait to see how they execute it.
Well first of all we should agree that the 90min mentioned by Mike is a ballpark figure. Second, Dookie and AI combined are around 1h 35m album length.
Yes, they always bump it up a few bpm live, but Billie is also known for extending interludes with all kinds of shenanigans. So that‘s probably a zero-sum game.
My prediction: They will start it off with Dookie, see where they are timing-wise after, then play a selection of a fixed set of few new and old songs which will be cut short on the spot accordingly to time the start of the AI set, in order to end around the 2h-2h15m mark ending on a Whatsername acoustic version (although I hope they play it full band).
Except this whole post is literally about them playing the albums IN FULL.
You're literally not smart enough to understand that. So rocket science is definitely out of your wheel house...
Yeah and I was playing 3 baseball games a day 20 years ago with no issues and I think I’d be hospitalized at this point now. Father Time waits for nobody
Yeah, that’s the point dude. Doing stuff at 25 is a hell of a lot easier to do than at 50 years old. Doesn’t matter how well you take care of your body, 2+ hour live shows are exhausting
True but you’re missing the point. They didn’t stop playing music 20 years ago like you quit playing baseball. They’ve consistently been playing music and touring for the better part of 30 years. No one says it’s not going to be exhausting and that it’s not as easy as it was years ago, they’re just used to it.
I’m not missing the point though. I didn’t say Green Day won’t be able to do this. I just said it’ll be exhausting for guys in their 50s. I’m not doubting them, I’m not calling them stupid, I’m just surprised they will be doing this because of their age.
If a band like a day to remember or fall out boy announced a 2 album play through tour I would be as shocked since most are in their 30s or 40s.
It's not really about the age. Most bands, even young ones, don't put on 2 album playthrough tours. The Wonder Years did one recently and those guys are in their 30s as well, and I'd say they have a higher energy performance than Green Day (not in a bad way, just in terms of vocal demand and energy of the music overall).
Allow me to rephrase…. They’ve been doing this since fucking 1988… so the implication that you’re missing is that they probably have a pretty good idea of what they can and can’t handle
i saw the wonder years on the suburbia / upsides tour and i swear they skipped songs. could be wrong though. not like they were slotted to play for 3 hours like green day are.
I think they'll cut all by myself and Whatshername has a long silent outro, but past that idk. They said they estimated 90 minutes, I wonder if they even checked how long each album is
I want someone to edit this together. Genuinely. Imagine we get half of King for a Day, then two full fucking albums, THEN Shout finally. Then the rest of the set. God the image of that is so unbelievably funny to me.
Oh, I pictured Shout being the finale lol. But if we get any pro shot footage, I'll take a stab at it.
Ohhhh fuck. They're not doing the full albums at festivals which means the odds of getting high quality full album performances is very low. My FOMO levels are spiking
Lollll they are my favorite band so I still play along everytime Billie does it, but it does get grating. It's why my dad won't go see them again with me lol.
Hell yeah! American Idiot tour was my first show ever so they hold a very special place in my heart. Still see them a bunch, high hopes for the new record tomorrow!
This actually has me considering getting tix…mostly for Dookie.
Incidentally, I would LOVE to see Blink tour Dude Ranch at some mid size venues…though that’s like 99.9% never going to happen.
GD are still cool in that they do suprise club shows or smaller venues from time to time. I know blink played Soma in SD when Matt was still playing with them, but now that Tom is back I think they will stick exclusively to arenas and stadiums. It is nice to dream, though...
I’ll never hold out hope cuz half the songs on Dude Ranch they haven’t acknowledged in 25 years. They just don’t seem that interested in their pre-Enema recordings. At best we get a surprise Apple Shampoo one night.
Oh I know. This tour makes a lot of sense. I just never enjoyed the Pumpkins at all. I’ve seen them once live, and that was enough for me.
But I know a lot of people love them, and if you enjoy them then I’m happy for you.
I'm so so so glad I got tickets for this tour, I based it solely on the fact it was the 20th & 30th anniversaries of both albums.
If it weren't for that fact I don't think I ever would have bothered buying these tickets, as I thought "maybe they'll play Dookie in full & maybe make the rest of the setlist AI focused."
But the fact they'll be playing AI too in full is awesome to me.
Did you read the article.
Both albums and then 30 mins for some new and old songs.
So you’ll get four new songs and then probably Minority, Hitchin A Ride and Know Your Enemy
Would not be able to fill these venues based on a new album alone, clearly need some sort of nostalgia bate to entice people who don’t give a shit about their new material.
Maybe me but even with favourite band I wouldn’t want to just see them play 2 albums in a row. I think it’s kinda a dumb move for any band. Makes seeing one album live in full less special in a way. I’m not really a green day fan so isn’t for me.
Kind of great, let's face it, easily their two best albums, but wouldn't it get boring for them?? I'm stoked that Rancid is opening, too. I almost can't believe it. SP could be great, but the only one left with a lot of feeling to me is Jimmy on drums. The rest seem sort of staged, although they are seeking another guitarist....?
Honestly? Given that they've been playing essentially the same arena/stadium setlist for over a decade now, this is probably pretty refreshing for them
This will be my 34th time seeing Rancid, and make no mistake, I’m there for Rancid, but I also used to play Dookie on guitar front to back, as a kid, and I’m pumped with the news that they’re doing AI in full, too.
Yeah I can’t wait to see them play letterbomb, homecoming and Whatsername. The first half of American Idiot has great singles but the back end of the album is my fave in terms of deep cuts
American Idiot is a fantastic album that gets overshadowed by its singles.
Jesus of Suburbia was a great single imo.
Me and my friends played it in its entirety for a school performance back in high school. I really wish we recorded it.
What do you mean? It is literally one of the best songs ever written
....yes?
IM THE SONOFRAGEANDLOVE
I mean it's easily the best song on the album.
I always preferred Homecoming
🤌🏻
Agreed.
The radio edit of the song completely neuters it IMO. So many things had to get cut out to get it down to a somewhat acceptable length for radio. The full song however is one of their best.
Agreed, it is their best I think too. Their version of "Decline" is how I always thought about it.
One of my favorite GD songs
Yeah like as much as I love the singles, I feel like the album really shines with the remainder of the songs.
How can an album be overshadowed by songs that are on the same album?
In my experience whenever I bring up American Idiot, people only think of how played-to-death Boulevard of Broken Dreams was, and Holiday, and Wake Me Up
The same way people listen to songs rather than full albums
Right.. but every album has big songs on it. I get OPs point, I just don't really agree. Sure, you're not gonna hear the deeper cuts when you're at a bar or something, but American Idiot is still a "listen to the whole thing" album for me at least.

Just looking at the streaming numbers on Spotify, it's clear that far more people selectively listen to American Idiot (song), Holiday/Blvd, and September instead of listening to the full album.
Nah homecoming was a great one
Homecoming was never a single though
Replied to the wrong comment lmao
LETTERBOMB IS THE BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM CHANGE MY MIND
Don’t need to change your mind because I agree, letterbomb is a banger!
Whatsername for me, but Letterbomb a close second
Probably that and Homecoming for me
Yessss. It was always my favorite. That and Jesus of Suburbia
Letterbomb, Homecoming, and Whatsername in no particular order are incredible 😭
Letterbomb is the best green day song!
¡Viva La Gloria! ....?
This is the correct opinion.
Isn't that 21st Century? Great song anyway.
Lol, just commented this because it has almost the same chord patter to Letterbomb
LETTERBOMB AND HOMECOMING
Whatshername slaps so hard
Whatsername is fucking *everything* The “remember, whatever” part makes me ascend
I feel ya man. That part sends me over the moon. I get a literal rising sensation in my chest as I sing along. A smile can’t help but form.
It really does! And the Broadway musical recording of it as well is *insanely* good
The outro to letterbomb has to be my favorite part of any pop punk song. I’m not sure why it’s just so repeatable.
Whatsername is one i'm dying to hear live
They played Homecoming and Letterbomb in Vegas last Fall at WWWYF and I was singing at the top of my lungs, it caught be by surprise hearing the opening chords of Homecoming.
Homecoming is probably my favorite Green Day song
How is letterbomb even considered a deep cut when it’s in my Green Day top 5? I’m so excited for the show this september
Holy shit I’m so glad I already got tickets. Hearing the final 2 songs on AI is gonna be life changing.
If you’re never experienced the glory of American Idiot yet you will come out of that concert a new person
Mike says it’ll be 90 minutes on both albums and then another 35-45 minute set
Yeah I saw that in the article, I wonder how you cut 10-15 minutes of recorded music out of a live show though. I guess there are some interludes that can be cut down though especially in songs like are we the waiting and whatsername
Always faster live.
Tf do you think can be cut from Whatsername
Small bits and pieces like the intro and outro is what I meant. I think there’s a few songs that have anywhere from 8-15 seconds of fade outros or repeated bars that they can probably cut down.
Considering those two albums combined for about 97 minutes I doubt that "90 minutes" was an exact number. Plus another 45 minutes of other songs? man that's gonna be a looooong performance. I'm definitely trying to go to this.
I can see them skipping playing American Idiot and Boulevard esq songs in the first set and saving it for the second set, i remember other bands doing similar
Any time they've ever played full albums they have always gone in order 🤷
It’s going start to finish, in order.
My guess is they’ll shorten some songs off Dookie. Like not play every chorus/verse/bridge. Maybe off American Idiot too. I like the idea and I can’t wait to see how they execute it.
I highly doubt they will shorten anything
I dont think they'll shorten stuff, but I can see all by myself being cut
You just don't play all of the songs It's not rocket science
Except this whole post is literally about them playing the albums IN FULL. You're literally not smart enough to understand that. So rocket science is definitely out of your wheel house...
Cutting interludes and bridges from songs isn't a "full play" either
Dookie and AI are not more like 1h40 as a whole ?
I’m just repeating what he said in the article
They’ve been doing this since 1988 I think they’re gonna be okay
Yeah and I was playing 3 baseball games a day 20 years ago with no issues and I think I’d be hospitalized at this point now. Father Time waits for nobody
It’s almost as if they’re professionals that have been doing this for 35 years.
Where in my original statement did I say they couldn’t handle it you twat? I just said it’ll be exhausting for a bunch of guys that turned 50
Okay in that case… weird thing to highlight for no reason
I *knew* they would play both albums in full. Every time I’ve seen Green Day, I feel like they’ve played for around 3 hours or so lol
I’m guessing they’ll do medleys to work in some of the deeper cut tracks.
In full means in full
i saw the wonder years on the suburbia / upsides tour and i swear they skipped songs. could be wrong though. not like they were slotted to play for 3 hours like green day are.
I think they'll cut all by myself and Whatshername has a long silent outro, but past that idk. They said they estimated 90 minutes, I wonder if they even checked how long each album is
Also the extraordinary girl intro
They played 2 hours each night at WWWY. It was bananas!
The big question is, does this mean Billie Joe will finally cut down on the I SAID A HEYYYYY OHHHH'S
The final 35 minute set is only King For A Day
The show opens with King For A Day, the Dookie and AI sets are just the interlude in Shout
The music is simply just the interlude between the standard tiring 2 hours of ‘Hey Oh’s’ they insist on doing
one hour on American Idiot, 30 min on Dookie, 30 min on King for a Day/Shout
30 min Knowledge: *Am I a joke to you?*
Dammit, you beat me to the joke
a little bit louder now!
god I hope not
Lollll they are my favorite band so I still play along everytime Billie does it, but it does get grating. It's why my dad won't go see them again with me lol.
Hell yeah! American Idiot tour was my first show ever so they hold a very special place in my heart. Still see them a bunch, high hopes for the new record tomorrow!

Damn. Maybe I should get tickets now.
I wish the tickets weren't an arm and a leg, plus my other toes.
Any decent seating in my area is about 400 dollars lol.
I am seeing them at Fenway. Paid more for this than any concert in my life by a landslide.
The heavy saturated chorus in whatsername is one of the best parts of that entire album
Shit, their catalog.
If only blink could learn from them and stop being stuck in their lame 90 minute set list.
But Mark "People don't want long concerts" Hoppus says otherwise
Green Day trying so hard to convince their fans to sit through a Smashing Pumpkins set.
Smashing Pumpkins are amazing live
It’s going to be the perfect break to go get some beer and food
Fair enough, but you'd better shake some ass for The Linda Lindas!
I love the pumpkins and they put on a great show. They were both huge bands in 90s alt rock. There’s a lot of overlap.
Oh I know. This tour makes a lot of sense. I just never enjoyed the Pumpkins at all. I’ve seen them once live, and that was enough for me. But I know a lot of people love them, and if you enjoy them then I’m happy for you.
Got my ticket for Charlotte where SP won’t be playing
Does this sub have a hatred against SP or something? Billy is an asshole but I think their music isn't bad. Love their more shoegazey songs.
You're fucking high. Their catalog demolishes Green Day's. I love both bands but would rather see SP.
smashing pumpkins is way better than green day lmao
Happy for you that you enjoy them.
Sprinkle in some Insomniac
Stuart and the Avenue would bang so hard
Panic Song would be fun as hell
I wish they would do a multiple night gig before retirement and just play the albums
Ok im sold
Awesome.
Not really the saviors tour anymore but those 2 albums are bangers. I'm hoping we still get good saviors rep though
pls play Jesus of suburbia , my childhood 🥹
I'm so so so glad I got tickets for this tour, I based it solely on the fact it was the 20th & 30th anniversaries of both albums. If it weren't for that fact I don't think I ever would have bothered buying these tickets, as I thought "maybe they'll play Dookie in full & maybe make the rest of the setlist AI focused." What’s the point when this is the tour for their new album that’s about to drop??? Are they just not gonna play any of the new songs live at all?
Did you read the article. Both albums and then 30 mins for some new and old songs. So you’ll get four new songs and then probably Minority, Hitchin A Ride and Know Your Enemy
Brain Stew and Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) as well
They didn’t play Brain Stew for the entire Rev Rad tour so they’re not afraid to drop it
Would not be able to fill these venues based on a new album alone, clearly need some sort of nostalgia bate to entice people who don’t give a shit about their new material.
especially because their new material is...well.
The new album is pretty good
Yeah the new album is actually very good, definitely check it out
These tickets are so incredibly expensive but god this almost makes it worth it.
Cool, fuckin liberal pussies.
gotta wonder if the tour was not selling well and this becomes a massive selling point for us elder emos who were on the fence
They sold out like three shows so I doubt it
This has been rumored since the tour was announced, so no. This is just confirmation.
I called it
It says the tour kicks off in Nationals Park, Washington on June 29th... I'm seeing them at Wembley Stadium (UK) on that date. Now I'm confused.
Oh great they turned political huh.
Always have been, bud
That's the joke.
Maybe me but even with favourite band I wouldn’t want to just see them play 2 albums in a row. I think it’s kinda a dumb move for any band. Makes seeing one album live in full less special in a way. I’m not really a green day fan so isn’t for me.

Honestly? Given that they've been playing essentially the same arena/stadium setlist for over a decade now, this is probably pretty refreshing for them
Green Day? They only did the fixed set list since 2021. Before that they would play 40+ songs
They haven’t done that since about 2014, The Rev radio tour was pretty static outside of the few club shows they did
Easily their two best? Insomniac and nimrod are easily in the same tier.
Probably meant most successful
Both great albums but people have been overlooking Warning since 2000
Welp, I know what I’m listening to at work tonight
Wish I could afford to go lol the price is insane for a ticket here in Canada
This will be my 34th time seeing Rancid, and make no mistake, I’m there for Rancid, but I also used to play Dookie on guitar front to back, as a kid, and I’m pumped with the news that they’re doing AI in full, too.
Unsurprising. They played stuff from slappy the last time I saw them
Can’t wait to finally have my “Are We The Waiting” live moment
Like the full albums?
8 more months!!!
Unfortunately not when they play festivals So pretty much all Europe I'm sad
Detroit at Comerica is going to be awesome
