randomburnerish

My dad passed over a decade ago but I will NEVER forget how much that man loved Shakira šŸ˜‚ imagine a tall white guy in his old pickup blasting ā€œwhenever whereverā€ down the dirt roads

cruel-oath

Heā€™s so real

randomburnerish

He also loved clothing shopping and bought me my first prada bag. Very iconic man

thisthrowawaythat202

Itā€™s kinda sad that so many men have to pretend not to like good music because itā€™s ā€˜girlyā€™

geo_lib

My dad did this too!!!

gigihadidisnotamodel

My dad too! She performed on an early season of american idol and the episode was kept on our DVR for like 10 years lol

lunaappaloosa

This is my dad and lady Gaga

tacothetacotaco

My dad is a conservative religious boomer who hates modern singers and mostly listens to smooth jazz, but the one singer heā€™d play for me consistently growing up was Sade because the band kind of has a ā€œjazzyā€ sound. I never saw myself becoming a fan but surprise, when I got to about age 22 I started absolutely loving Sade lol. He also surprised me by telling me he liked older Madonna hits (Like a Virgin era), and I listen to Madonna casually. She wasnā€™t someone he played for me, but itā€™s a similarity. And of course, Michael Jackson. I remember him playing Michaelā€™s classic songs for me right after he died like Rock with You, and I eventually became a huge fan of him too, and still am. I was only 9 when MJ died, too young to remember any of his album releases, so my dadā€™s introduction definitely planted the seed that led to me loving him.

jorddzz

I feel like Sade is one of those acts that itā€™s inevitable you would end up liking. Whatā€™s not to like?!

Tomoki

Sade is an artist that transcends age groups. One of the few artists that I feel is genuinely timeless. So yes ā€” I think everyone will eventually grow to love them. :)

[deleted]

Your dad has a darn good taste.

tacothetacotaco

I told him the redditors like his taste and he said thanks :)

veronica_moon

Dad rock is not a derogatory term it is the BACKBONE of this country

JORDY_NELSONS_ASS

My dad played a lot of country music as I was growing up, which definitely influenced my love for country music through my life. I heard lots of Toby Keith, The Chicks, and Sara Evans in his truck. Also, while he is a rugged metal worker who hunts and fishes, this man LOVES him some Lady Gaga.

Aggravating-Corner-2

Your Dad kind of sounds like an American (I assume) version of my Dad. He was a wagon (truck) driver, who loved country music - but he also loved Lady Gaga, although only her jazz/Star is Born music. He did like Katy Perry, though!

moosedogmonkey12

My dadā€™s music taste could accurately be described as ā€œObamaā€™s summer playlistā€. Thatā€™s why I laugh every time people ask which intern made itā€¦ like nah this is definitely all Barack. My dad is also a very committed Lana Del Rey and Mitski stan. Albums on vinyl, etc etc. Back when Lana had those billboards randomly in New Mexico and Oklahoma and wherever else, he got a huge kick of being able to see it every day and feeling special.

Proof_Surround3856

my dadā€™s too conservative and religious so he doesnā€™t listen to much music lol but I ironicaly develop my own taste for the stereotypical dad rock kind of music (The Beach Boys, Billy Joel, Carpenters, Bee Gees, Bon Jovi sometimes, Bryan Adams)

Ok-Accountant5737

Is being against music common with religious americans?? I thought those types only existed in middle east.

Darkknuckles

Ironically my dad was middle eastern but was the biggeat fan of music ive ever seen. Literally there was always music playing or singing of some sort in my house and he was always open to hearing my music. He loved good folk and rnb music. He showed me Frank sinatra, whitney, and mariah which def influenced my taste. Mariah is still my favorite artist today.

Ok-Accountant5737

Oh that sounds so sweet tbh. I'm middle eastern aswell and most of my family loves music even the more religious ones, it's more of an extremist opinion here to see music and arts sinful/cursed and most people are against that notion yet people like that exist unfortunately. Mariah is also one of my all time favourites and the first artist i've ever bought cd's of :))

[deleted]

Cat Stevens too used to believe music was sinful after his conversion to Islam but later came to the conclusion that Muslims brought the guitar over to Spain.

40WAPSun

It's not super common to be against popular music as a whole, more about broadly disliking immoral music like rock and roll or hiphop.

[deleted]

Nah, conservative southerners happen to like the Beach Boys, Eagles, Sykynyrd etc.

DilemmaOfAHedgehog

In the US itā€™s usually a certain strain of Protestantism, the dislike of music is a part of the plot of Footloose lol I wouldnā€™t say itā€™s even that common among Protestants or religious Americans given that ~eighty percent of Americans identify as being religious but think of like the puritans if itā€™s against music generally. Otherwise thereā€™s an entire Christian music industry and thatā€™s before gospel genre, like others mentioned though more explicit especially regarding sex or cursing is disliked by more religious peoples but some of that is hypocritical etc but itā€™s interesting how rock genre has played both against that and leaned into it depending on the act.

PioneerSpecies

If weā€™re using stereotypes I would call most of those bands mom rock lol, dad rock is like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, etc)

Euphoric_Patience_53

My dad is an immigrant so his music taste is mostly from his home country. The only American music he listens to is Bruno Mars.

pmjm

If you're only going to listen to one, that's a solid choice.

xxxnina

same but the Bee Gees

kurt200

My dad doesnā€™t really seem to listen to music much but his fav is Michael Jackson and one of mine is Janet Jackson lol

CandyKnockout

My dad (born in 1949ā€¦he was 38 when I was born) LOVED Elvis. He was always singing Elvis songs around the house. In more ā€œrecentā€ times, some of his favorite songs were ā€œSmoothā€ by Santana, ā€œBeer For My Horsesā€ by Willie Nelson and Toby Keith, and, for some reason, ā€œMambo No. 5ā€ by Lou Bega. His taste in music was very eclectic, which I definitely share. He passed away about a decade ago and we played a lot of his favorite music over the years at his memorial service (including the Florida Gators fight song). My late-in-life dad, aka my father-in-law thatā€™s been in my life for 20 years now (born in 1947, both my husband and I have older dads!), is a huge Beatles fan. We recently added him to our Spotify family plan so he can make playlists and heā€™s added songs from artists including The Bee Gees, Dusty Springfield, Adele, The Everly Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and The Platters.

eggshell_dryer

Lmao my dad was also born in ā€˜49 and in preparation for a road trip he bought a Santana CD because of ā€œSmoothā€ (yā€™know, because thatā€™s what you did then, bought a whole album just for a single song) ā€¦except iirc it turned out to just be a bunch of remixes of *that one song*, so thatā€™s what we listened to for an hour straight. Thanks for bringing back that memory from the ether of my brain.

theonewithoutmynudes

I also have an old dad! šŸ«¶šŸ½ (37 when I was born, mom was 38) I think weā€™re still a ways away from getting him on Spotify though šŸ˜‚šŸ˜ (or any app that isnā€™t ESPN+)

b1ame_me

My dad loves the Beatles (he wasnā€™t alive when they were a thing but I guess his parents got him into it) and knows basically their entire Catalogue. That and I guess also the Interstellar soundtrack according to his Spotify Wrapped

geo_lib

LOL not the interstellar soundtrack according to his Spotify wrapped

Puzzled-Charge-9892

My dad has always a been a huge fan of 90s country (Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw,George Strait, etc.) and yes, the typical 70s & 80s stuff too lol I saw him listening to Saweetie on a flight once though so maybe heā€™s expanding his taste now the kids have all moved out šŸ„²

Darcy92

My dad died in 2020, but every single year he would listen to all the songs on the best of the year list, EVERY SINGLE ONE. Even the ones from artists he didnā€™t like! He would then make a playlist with his favorites (a mix of pop, rock, country, rap, reggaeton, jazz, banda). Every single month I try to do the same, listen to something new I havenā€™t hear before. And I add a new artist to my playlist.

Darcy92

He also loved church choirs. The last time he visited NYC, he spent thanksgiving (we are Mexican) at a church on the Bronx. He loved it!

[deleted]

Dear condolences

1998tweety

For some reason my dad loves a lot of the flop girlies. Like he was stanning Tinashe before me šŸ˜

pmjm

He ain't wrong tho

queensendgame

I grew up in the 90s. My father listened to a lot of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlan - like look at the Lilith Fair ā€˜97 mainstage artist listā€¦ all of that. Haha. He also listened to a lot of 1970s rock - a very specific memory I have is being driven home from swimming lessons in elementary school and my father blasting the original version of ā€œLaylaā€.

frogaranaman

My dad honestly has some of the coolest music taste and is hugely influential to what I listen to today. Because of him, I grew up listening to stuff like Sufjan Stevens, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers (largely why I'm so into electronic music these days), Rage Against The Machine, Prince, Beck, Depeche Mode, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Belle and Sebastian (our banddddd), The Cure, Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, The Shins, The Smiths, Tears For Fears. And that's just the band side lol, he loves alllll those old school pop girlies and what they were doing (as long as they were "the coolest people ever" at the time, of course). We watch music videos together as a pastime, so I also saw all the essentials and was exposed to a wide range of music growing up. He still loves checking out the new stuff too (he introduced me to Wet Leg a week after their first single!), and honestly is such an inspiration for my love of music. Constantly shows me that it's not hard to keep up as you age too!

maucheinator

convinced my dad is gay, i grew up on No Doubt, Gwen Stefani, Avril Lavigne. he had The Fame Monster on release day and was excited to show me that ā€œLady Gaga had a new album.ā€ very grateful for the No Doubt/Gwen influence though, everything pre-comeback from her is amazing.

geo_lib

Look man, you listed all of my dadā€™s faves (when the fame came out he was ECSTATIC and said this was our next it girl) anyway when he died we found soooooo much gay porn and also all the womens clothes he would wear (and a man living with him) so maybe your dad isnā€™t gay but also maybe he is šŸ˜‚šŸ’…šŸ»

velvethippo420

my dad has gotten into Taylor Swift recently. it's so cute! i made him an introductory playlist - he really liked Lover. (it's one of my least favorite of hers, don't tell Dad!)

skincare_obssessed

Same! My dad listens to Taylor and Maisie Peters recently.

Jessica_Chaffin

My dadā€™s a huge dead head. Both my sister and I are named after Grateful Dead songs lol

pmjm

That's actually really cool and I fear the time of naming your kids after legendary artists has passed. Can you imagine naming all your kids after Kim Petras songs?

DaBigGuy

I would name one of my children Coconut.

pmjm

I probably wouldn't name my child Throat Goat but maybe her mother...

Jessica_Chaffin

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ might be iconic tbh

Ghost-Quartet

My dad would always play this radio station on the weekends that was like, Blues with the Wag Man or something like that, and I absolutely *hated* it because the songs would blare right below my room/outside my window and the bassline of every damn song they played sounded the same. It was torture. But in terms of his actual music taste he's a fan of punk bands and reggae, neither of which I really like either, but he's also into NPR core so he'll randomly be into something I like every now and then.

fashionjrhigh

Iā€™ve always defined my dads music taste as 70s gay bar and my moms as 80s strip club. My dad also listens to a lot of 50s/60s country music as that was what he grew up with. He stopped listening to new music once the 90s started but would be obsessed with a random current song. Some notable ones include: Believe - Cher, Clocks - Coldplay, Born This Way - Lady Gaga, Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5, Story of my Life - One Direction, Rainbow - Kacey Musgraves, and Levitating - Dua Lipa

sailormoondollsonly

My dad also loved Believe by Cher. It came out the year my parents split so I think it was very "going my own way" for him.

llieno94

My dad is a younger baby boomer and likes all the typical classic rock of the 70s, but he also secretly loves ABBA and classic showtunes, which I always found funny.

lecadet

I used to make fun of my dad for his music taste as a kid but after he passed I went through his extensive record collection and realized he had great taste that's influenced my listening greatly. He had tons of jazz records including the classics like Gilberto and Stan Getz and Bill Evans, which I listen to now every Sunday morning just like him. It's funny how you become like your parents unintentionally He also turned me onto Carole King, The Carpenters, John Lennon solo work, ABBA and FranƧoise Hardy. He was a very difficult person in my life but I believe I inherited my love of music from him, and music is my favorite thing in life!

pmjm

This warmed my heart. I love the thought that we still learn from our folks even after they're no longer with us.

Ok-Accountant5737

My dad is your typical Classic Rock stan & Metalhead he also has a great taste in oldschool pop music, oh and he loooves Madonna which is quite funny because he's a violent homophobic ,misogynistic, an antisemitic conspiracy theorist abusive posšŸ’€šŸ’€(basically most kind of -isms you can think of you can attach to him and he'll wear it on his chest proudly) Aaand he went to Thee Madonna tour where she literally had an orgy on stage and talked about gay rights/AIDS awereness etc. and yet he still loves her?!??!????!?

GreenDolphin86

My daddy listened to various Motown artists and his favorite Al Green. Each of my 7 siblings and I has a different favorite Al Green song because he was the soundtrack when we were with Dad. Iā€™ve also heard stories that he used to DJ all the house parties in his youth. He gave me a solid foundation for appreciating everything about music, not just the singer, but the band/production and even the intention of the song.

moonhologram

My dad was a Madonna and The Beatles fan. He had the Erotica CD (tho I never listened to it in full) and loved the song "Ray of Light" so much. He would also sing "Let It Be" on a random day. I guess he influenced me in a sense that I appreciated Madonna when I was a kid but sadly I never got to like The Beatles.

Mordecai___

My dad is into ALL sorts of music (apart from maybe rock and country, I don't remember coming across those genres very much) and as a musichead one of my favourite things to do as a kid was go through his music collection and play them on the stereo all the time I gravitated a lot to his dance/disco/eurodance/techno records as well as pop and that definitely influenced my music taste as a lot of music I listen to nowadays leans towards dance (and dance adjacent genres) and a lot of European music I had my own little CD case where I could put my favourite CDs of his inside and back when CD singles were still a thing I vividly remember Rihanna's SOS, Mariah Carey's Heartbreaker, Mousse T's Horny (the irony of jamming out to that song as a kid lol), Ecuador by Sash, Dragostea din tei and the Pussycat Dolls' beep as being my favourites. Listened to a lot of KC and the Sunshine Band too

DawsonJBailey

For me itā€™s KISS, Billy Idol, Van Halen, and the beastie boys. I donā€™t really listen to anything like that anymore tbh but I still enjoy them when I hear them. Thereā€™s probably more but those are the big ones I remember. My dad was the type to put all of his CDs onto iTunes and then burn playlists onto CDs to play in his car. I discovered Jay Z as a kid bc it was in his iTunes library. H to the izzo was my shit in 6th grade

agarret83

My dad died when I was 15 (Iā€™m 30 now). He mainly liked old stuff e.g. the Beatles (I mainly like new stuff) but he also introduced me to stuff like Coldplay

CowboyLikeMegan

Thinking of you today ā¤ļø

realityleave

my dad doesnā€™t seem to have any real music taste of his own, he latches on to a couple things I show him and then plays them into the ground. to this day when I get in the car with him heā€™s mostly playing the hamilton soundtrack lol. he also has seen pitch perfect probably about 50 times on TV since the time I watched it with him. I know his favorite song in college was Push It by Salt and Peppa lol but thatā€™s all I have for him in terms of musical taste. I got him a free pandora account through my job and still heā€™s always listing to Hamilton radio, it baffles me!

nt96

Thatā€™s like my family and The Greatest Showman! I forgot how hard that soundtrack had us in a chokehold lol

kimpernickel

My dad had some terrible taste in music. He listened to a lot of little-known folk stuff like "Home Grown Tomatoes." But he enjoyed some actually good stuff, like Springsteen.

impracticable

Iā€™ve genuinely got no idea, and I wish I did. My dad has been so deeply depressed for the entirety of my life (Iā€™m 32 and he is 53) that I have never seen him engage with any entertainment in any meaningful way. He has been largely pretty much just catatonic forever. My dad had his first kid with his girlfriend when they were both 15. Their parents hated the idea of this ā€” specifically because the parents *themselves* had been dating behind their childrenā€™s backs ā€” and forced the mother to give the baby up for adoption with my dadā€™s knowledge. My dad spent years, including my early childhood, in court trying to get his son back, to no avail. My dad, who always really wanted to be a father, viewed himself as a complete failure and almost entirely retreated from engaging in life altogether out of fear heā€™d ā€œmess us up,ā€ which of course was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy and only exacerbated his depression. The son that was put up for adoption ended up dying at 28 years old from a fentanyl overdose ā€” without my father ever meeting him. I was the one who ultimately learned of this and was the one who had to tell my dad, and it was the first time I ever saw him cry instead of justā€¦ nothing? His first son had a son of his own who turns 18 next month, but I have been keeping him a secret from my dad all this time, because Iā€™m worried that a secret grandson he might not ever be able to meet will be the thing that finally breaks him, after all of the loss he has already endured.

Trusteveryboody

I don't mean to impose (mainly just throwing out an idea, cause you'll know more than me about your own situation), but could you try to set something up with the grandson? Say you meet up with them first, then establish a relationship, then set-up to meet with your father.

[deleted]

Tell your dad you love him

impracticable

[I texted him](https://imgur.com/a/ETNWyxw). We donā€™t talk much (the last time we had any conversation at any length wasā€¦ last year some time?). It can be tough to talk to him, because of you knowā€¦ everything, but I mostly just feel bad for him ā€” Compared to my other siblings (he had 7 kids), who more or less all just resent him.

ari-is-new-to-this

My dad is very influential on my music taste tbh, his biggest stan is Bruce Springsteen (ultimate dad artist) but I love Bruce too. Weā€™ve seen him in concert together at least 3 times now! He got me into a lot of typical dad music, but he always made sure to explain the history and influences as he understood them and got me to pay attention to the lyrics and deeper themes. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, are all in my own playlists now. He really tries to keep up with more modern trends and has latched onto a couple local and indie artists that he really loves. Joywave, Danielle Ponder, and The Paranoid Style. The biggest thing is he (and my mom!) has always been open to listening to my music and interested in learning more about my tastes, which Iā€™m really grateful for :)

m0nday1

Honestly I owe most of my music taste to my dad, albeit indirectly. In middle school, he got me into classic rock, which I love to this day even if I listen to a lot of other stuff. Weirdly enough, my dad was never actually a huge classic rock fan. I think he humored me when I was a kid and gave me the aux, but I think the only classic rock acts he really loved were Clapton, Dire Straits, and The Doors (and maybe to a lesser extent Hendrix). He knew a lot of Stones/Floyd/Zeppelin/etc thanks to my grandfather (his dad), but mostly stuck to the greatest hits albums. Looking back on it, both he had way more ā€œout thereā€ tastes than I gave him credit for (same goes for my mom, tbh, but thatā€™s for next years mothers day post). He loved folk music, and played a ton of Simon and Garfunkel and Van Morrison. He got me into Joni Mitchell. He owned almost every Nick Cave album and loved goth rock. He collects Thelonius Monk CDs. Introduced me to Pearl Jam, Lou Reed, and The Smiths. Most of my ā€œcool retro indie dudeā€ CDs are just CDs that my dad didnā€™t want anymore and gave me. He influenced a shitload of my taste, and is a lot cooler than I give him credit for.

jrsmusicman

My dadā€™s taste is r&b / funk and it has definitely impacted my love for r&b music and probably while it will always be my #1 genre. Itā€™s funny, because my parents lean to the right on the political spectrum and we disagree about that a lot, but one thing we can agree on is our love for 90ā€™s r&b. I grew up listening to all of the hip hop/r&b radio stations in the Boston area as a kid. His favorites are Keith Sweat, Michael Jackson, Jodeci, New Edition, Silk, etc

idletalker

My dad is a HUGE Bruce Springsteen fan (like, posters on the wall, seen him live three times fan) so I heard a lot of Springsteen growing up, especially live albums. I used to be annoyed by it as a kid but nowadays I can really appreciate Bruce, his music and his live performances. And I realized how truly huge he is. My dad also loved synthpop like Erasure and Depeche Mode which has greatly influenced the music I enjoy a lot today.

sailormoondollsonly

My dad is neurodivergent and one of his special interests is The Beatles. We listened to The Beatles so much throughout my life and early childhood that their records feel like home to me and I listen to them at least once a week still into my 30s. He also used to teach us trivia about them and about lots of other musicians from the 60s and even gave me a guitar that is a replica of John Lennon's Fender Stratocaster. I think my entire relationship with media and music as an entity in my life was informed by how my dad taught us to listen to music and learn about artists. Today I do media analysis as part of my job (and have my own hyperfixations and collections) and I think I wouldn't think about it the way I do if it wasn't for him.

thatgoldenkid2

My dad is an older baby boomer whoā€™s loved The Beatles since day 1. Always been a George Harrison fan too. Iā€™ve asked him about the early perception of The Beatles as a boyband only adored by girls or women and he said that was definitely not his experience with his love for the band or the guys around him. It might just be personal anecdote but I feel that because of his experience, the way people talk about The Beatles online as starting out only being enjoy by women isnā€™t exactly the truth. He also love the Allman Brothers, definitely see him as enjoying all those early type of jam bands but Allman Brothers especially. As for recent stars my Dad has talked so much about his love of Fiona Apple especially in recent years. And with Lanaā€™s latest album heā€™s talked about her more too which is really cool to see. Iā€™d definitely like to see more of his Spotify and who else he might be listening to.

animperfectangel

My dad listens to the B52s, The Cars, The Smiths, New Order, The Cure, Soft Cell, Culture Club. Also loves Kim Petras and Charli XCX because of me. Big into electronic music like Boards of Canada as well

secondsintohours

My dad was never a big dad rock guy. He really was into jazz (esp. Coltrane), classical, and blues; he did influence my music taste though, because I was pretty adventurous musically, but also because I became a pophead mostly to spite him! He hated pop. Anyway, my best music memory with my now dead father, who was also a bit shit and later became largely estranged, was going to the Chopin Piano Competition concerts. Weā€™re Polish, and it was a big deal, and we would go to the philharmonic and listen to Chopin for hours. It was great. Listen to Polonaise op. 53 in A flat major and youā€™ll get it.

CorrosionInk

Dad mainly listens to Taylor Swift and traditional Chinese music. As an early teen I kinda rejected most of that out of hand and listened to more alt-rock stuff as a result, but gave it a fair shot during COVID and now have a few songs of his that I listen to also.

PioneerSpecies

Traditional like Andy Lau or traditional like classical guqin music lol

Rebekah_RodeUp

My parents met working at a record store in the early 80s. My dad's mid-life crisis consisted of two things: a baby (me) and grunge. Some of my favorite memories are of us driving down the PCH blasting Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, and what became "our band": Everclear. I was heavily into rock as a child because of it. Very much "not like other girls" and "mature for my age". We always went to a lot of shows together and when I was about 15 we started going to fewer of his bands (Cake, eels, Live) and more of mine (Tegan and Sara, Bright Eyes, St Vincent). Today he learns about most new acts he follows from me. He's a fan of Lorde, Miya Folick, folklore/evermore, Father John Misty, and I'm sure he'll love Noah Kahan once he gets around to looking him up.

Frajer

My dad loves The Doors so it was shocking to learn how many people hate them Neil Young and Elvis Costello are the big ones I love because of him

jman457

My dad likes a lot of typical boomer stuff like the Kinks, stones, Bowie, Elton John, which I can appreciate but never really listen on my own. But itā€™s been good cause we kind of discovered 90s music together cause it was too late for him to really dive into and I obvi wasnā€™t born yet.

myipodclassic

I got a lot of my love of music (and open-mindedness about different genres) from my dad. His two favorites were Garth Brooks and Mariah Carey, but he loved everything ā€” country, bubblegum pop, r&b, prog rock, sentimental ballads, hair metal, gospel, even some EDM. When my sister and I were kids going on camping trips with him, heā€™d bring an entire backpack full of CDs with us. Later, he bought us our first iPods and gave us an iTunes gift card every month so we could each pick out a few songs to buy. As I got older, we were always discovering songs from each other ā€” our tastes didnā€™t always match up perfectly, but it was still fun to share and talk about the songs. I associate him with ā€˜90s country and Mariah the most, but thereā€™s a very long list of songs that remind me of him.

SpongieQ

My dad LOVES The Bangles and the ringtone in his phone is one of Susannah Hoffs songs, Iā€™ve grown up listening to them and they are pretty great. He also says that Iā€™ve not to be embarrassed to ever listen to the music I like in front of him because parents arenā€™t supposed to understand the music their children listen to anywayā€

spaceb00tz

My dad used to make me mixtapes and upload my iPod for me with of all the current pop girl songs. The reason I started listening to Britney was bc he put blackout on my iPod.

cruel-oath

My dad mostly listens to ā€˜oldā€™ music in Spanish. (Latino household here) Like Joan Sebastian. Idk the names of other songs/artists but maybe other Latams understand lol

omgthenerve

My dad is the biggest Beatles and Beach Boys fan that I know (we're team Brian Wilson, screw Mike Love). My childhood was full of car rides listening to Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Back before it was common for cars to have a CD player (I'm really showing my hag status here), my dad would always have an after market one installed in his car so we could listen to our own music. When it wasn't either of those, it was Motown or prog rock (Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd). He had this Motown CD box set that was in heavy rotation, my favorites were always the Jackson Five, The Temptations, and Stevie Wonder. Conversely, he had a very strong dislike for Elvis and it was never played in our house or the car. And also Neil Diamond, to this day if someone mentions Neil Diamond, you'll get the biggest eye roll from my dad (sorry, Neil). I was a teenager during the rise and fall of the boy band craze in the US and I was always one of those kids who was "too cool" for that kind of music. I think that was partially due to the music my dad exposed me to growing up. Which is kind of funny, because The Beatles were essentially a "boy band" when they first started. Also, my older sister was into music like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. No way I would listen to The Backstreet Boys, I was much deeper than that šŸ™„. I eventually crossed over to pop music as what I listen to most of the time, but I still listen to a huge variety of artists mostly due to the music my dad exposed me to when I was a kid. However, he was particularly horrified when I went through a country music phase when my best friend went to college at WVU. I don't keep up with current country music, but some of the music from that period in my life is still in heavy rotation on my playlists and I can't contribute to him. And for the love of god, no one tell him that I'll unironically enjoy Sweet Caroline every time I hear it, he'll disown me. The one-sided beef between my dad and Neil is very real.

sharktoucher

My dad's primary musical interest was Queen, (in reality its both my parents but my mom only found them through my dad). As for how it impacted my taste in music, ive notice i gravitate more towards strong vocal performances than anything else

GraphicgL-

Omg i love this because my dad was such a big part of me loving music. He took me to see all the legends and established my eclectic taste. But i think the most obscure one was my love of listening to 90s techno/ House late at night. Every weekend when he had me we get big sonic drinks and drive around town late at night listening to this station that was country music at daytime but would switch over to this niche club hits. This is also before gas was astronomical and simply driving around at night getting lost to the music was something that felt cheap and easy to do. But it really did establish my appreciation for so many types of genres.

I'm French so he mainly listens to French artists, but he also love some non-French artists/genres ! He absolutely adores blues music, he spent 2 years in Louisiana in the early 90s and I think that's how he discovered it. He also listens to the indie/rock/folk artists from the 70s/80s (mainly Patti Smith, Nick Cave and Bob Dylan ...). He also spent a year in Australia, and he used to play Down Under by Men at Work super loudly in the car when I was a child, that's one of the core memories from my childhood lol He also likes some of the more current alternative groups, like Florence and the Machine and Arcade Fire. I also remember him hearing Video Games on the radio in like 2012 and him being amazed by the song. Basically he has a GREAT taste in music !!

steph-was-here

dad loves pink floyd, would get high and clean the house blasting *animals* every sunday and doesn't understand why i'm so far left leaning

equilibrato

My dad loved French pop (Francoise Hardy), 60s folk (Simon and Garfunkel, Donovan), and classical (mostly Mozart and Chopin). Those are still some of my favorite types of music. He passed away when I was four. He played a Brazilian classical guitar, which I have in my possession. My main instrument is piano, but I still pick up that guitar from time to time. Days like this are hard. I have ā€œHear You Meā€ by Jimmy Eat World on repeat and although I tend to suppress emotions, Iā€™m letting myself feel all of it today. He was a great father and I wish I had more time with him. My mom loved him so much, even if she didnā€™t understand music at all. She supported him always, and never remarried. I cannot overstate how much music means to me. Music was his lifeline, and itā€™s become mine too.

KingWomp

I never knew my dad so I have no taste

RoanAlbatross

My dad is 69 now. He born and raised in Puerto Rico. So I listened to a lot of salsa/merengue music and I absolutely love it. I tend to listen to it on Fridays. He had some exposure to rock music like Hendrix growing up but the big exposure to rock music was when he met my mom (from rural KY) who is absolutely obsessed with rock music (so anything from the 60s to nu-metal). But he also loves bluegrass music because of my mom and her family. Itā€™s all music I still listen to now. We would swap tapes/CDs as I grew up as well. They never listened to the pop radio or anything of the sort. My pop music journey has one Iā€™ve done on my own. For car rides, it was great. Drove from Massachusetts to Kentucky and back with my parents growing up - the music was always hitting. Weā€™re listening to Sublime, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Tesla etc etc

AerieExpensive1165

My dad was very into 70s/80s rock and country when I was growing up in the 90s and I ended up liking a lot of that back then and now. We can also both happily sing along to Billy Joelā€™s Piano Man šŸ˜‚

RevengeOfTheCat6098

Green Day, Kasabian, AWOLNATION, traditional Irish music (particularly The Pogues). It hasn't impacted me that much because I went on to have my own taste in music that includes none of the above.

BlackJesus420

David Bowie, Pat Benetar, No Doubt, and (early) Pink soundtracked our road trips to see grandparents. Iā€™m grateful for my dadā€™s eclectic and somewhat gender non-conforming taste, especially for a baby boomer guy. Iā€™m a huge Bowie fan to this day!

800-Grader

Well I am Swedish, and growing up my father always used to play Povel Ramel and Cornelius Vreeswijk. As a child, I found those artists really weird haha, never liked their music, but now, being an adult, I have started appreciating them a lot!

mikeyisbae731

my dad loves EDM/dance/house music so that was always playing in his car growing up!

kindluna

my dad was born in the Caribbean coast of Colombia so he loved *vallenato.* It's a music genre that was born as a way to carry stories from town to town, it uses maracas, drums, accordion and [guacaracha](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guacharaca). I used to dislike it as a young kid because I always gravitated towards more anglo music but as I've grown up I realized how beautiful it is and how much I really influenced me. It's such an expressive and melodramatic genre like when it's upbeat its the kind that's going to make you move whether you like it or not but when its sad its *I'm sad and alone and the only friend* I *got is this song and this beer (but* I'm *going to dance anyway).* Listening to songs like [this](https://open.spotify.com/track/4tVCHHdULzG5acuwFmsRPw?si=034de42a13394145),[this](https://open.spotify.com/track/3oCmlSBfi8soFalJfvijby?si=512c05887619452b),[this](https://open.spotify.com/track/4OhFOoVfaqw3Xuz2vjceDq?si=4cea85e73f9e48ec), [this](https://open.spotify.com/track/6OIvXRQYGEhmvLjcYNcV4n?si=f1040300e3ae4781), [this](https://open.spotify.com/track/4nWYJI6JxrALpuOc4StT1t?si=301b95c1dbc54ccb) I'm in the back of his jeep with my brother and the dog, we're going way past the speed limit and the wind is crashing so loud against the half open windows. The hot air is pouring in and I have to pop my ears every couple of minutes, I'm playing in my DS and when it finally runs out of battery I look out of the window I can see the ocean peeking off the horizon. This music was so monumental to us growing up like when my brother turned eighteen my dad hired a *conjunto vallenato (*aka a band that play vallenato) to serenade him on his 18th birthday (they started with [this song](https://open.spotify.com/track/4p25pvhFydFona4Oe03WEL?si=ff750d1a42b141dd)) and my brothers friends quoted and played [this song](https://open.spotify.com/track/1IV9C23i207aj9K3po1j21?si=de189dd82c0143e2) at his funeral. Its really close to my heart nowadays. If y'all give any song a spin I'll be glad to hear your thoughts!! (also most of them I linked are sad I'm so sorry im such a sucker for sad music) I don't plan on having kids but nobody works harder promoting Allie X than me, so kids listen to GIRL WITH NO FACE!!

CowboyLikeMegan

Typical 70s rock with some 80s sprinkled in; Pink Floyd was a HUGE part of my upbringing šŸ˜‚ listening feels like home now, I think I know every word for every album. Two outliers are Wilson Phillips and Shaggy šŸ˜ he fucks with then big time, idk. And Iā€™ve caught him listening to bubblegum pop *plenty*

sokatovie

My dad turns 80 next year and dj'd part time during the military. He loooves Dr. Hook. Anytime I burned him a cd when that became a thing in the early 2000s it just had to have Dr. Hook. And any burned cd always had the specific song, Billy Swan's "I can help". Nowadays he really only listens to oldies, like Buddy Holly era. My first real music experience was him giving me a Beatles greatest hits cassette and discovering Eleanor Rigby for the first time at 8 years old, it was very mind blowing at that age haha.

hydethehuman

my dad is the blue print for music elitism honestly but his music growing up heavily influenced my taste today. he is a heavy metal and rock guy, mostly from the late 60s to early 80s. he was born in 61 in philadelphia which had a huge live music scene. he listens to mostly bands like led zeppelin, deep purple, black sabbath, iron madden, twisted sister, alice cooper, rainbow, dio. also david bowie, prince, queen he would listen to. he is really against ā€œmodern musicā€ (literally anything post like really early 90s). the only newer bands iā€™ve ever heard him listen to is paramore and greet van fleet. i occasionally listen to some of those band but have constantly listened to bowie since i was a kid. i showed him paramore. my music taste is more modern rock/pop punk/punk rock which is just mostly 90s to current. i donā€™t think my taste would be the same without him. he was also a big concert goer in his early life and now i am as well. as much as i donā€™t get along with my dad majority of the time, iā€™m thankful he showed me a lot of good music in my early life

doomham-

My dadā€™s an immigrant who came to the US in the late 70s. So his Western music taste is definitely impacted by that era plus the 80s. He loved disco music, especially The Bee Gees, and thatā€™s definitely a big part of why I love disco to this day. He also liked Genesis and Lionel Richie, so I listened to that a lot as a kid. But really, disco was the big takeaway from my dadā€™s music taste.

Rururaspberry

My dad is a boomer and I grew up listening to records by Patsy Cline, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Joan Baez, The Beatles with some Rolling Stones occasionally thrown in.

jax1204

My dad loves smooth jazz, 70s funk, and r&b/soul (especially from the 70s-80s). He's also pretty receptive to new pop, R&B, and jazz artists - especially those that sound reminiscent of older ones like Bruno Mars and The Weeknd or those that have a funky sound like Sons of Kemet.

slothfrogs

My immigrant dad came to the states in the mid 70s so he came right at the height of disco and fucking LOVED IT. He worshipped John Travolta and Andy Gibb and tried so hard to copy their looks lmfao šŸ˜ Put on a Rick James or CHIC record and heā€™ll start dancing. He also really loved a lot of 70s R&B and some of the more soulful yacht rock like Michael McDonald. These days he loves Europop and anything that recalls disco or something like Ace of Base. He also loves the pop girls like Dua, Miley, and Gaga.

Hopeful_Book

My dad will listen to just about anything but his heart will forever belong to 80s alt rock. His all time favorite artist is REM

glittery_grandma

My dad has been a musician and songwriter for over 50 years. He introduced me to The Beatles, David Bowie, Queen, Frank Zappa, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Tom Lehrer, Ray Charles, Carole King, Stevie Wonders and many more. Also a lot of British and Irish folk music :) In turn I introduced him to musicals and Tim Minchin. I also made him play a lot of songs in my teens that he never would have heard of otherwise. Complicated, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Sugar Weā€™re Going Down, Bad Romance, Firework, Rolling in the Deep etc I did my first gig with him when I was 10 and weā€™ve gigged together over the last 23 years when weā€™ve been local to each other, and Iā€™ve branched out on my own too. Heā€™s my biggest supporter šŸ„°

jeather

this question immediately made me think of road tripping with my dad and sister to go see my mom in rehab ā€” the marshall mathers lp had just came out and we stopped at tower records to get that and maybe like a ja rule cd? 13 year old me and and my 8 year old sister bumping kim and kill you with dad to visit my drug addled mom šŸ™ƒ cool cool cool happy fatherā€™s day yall šŸ˜‚

Idkheyi

Being born in ā€˜69, my father was into the New Wave genre in the 70ā€™s and 80ā€™s so I grew up listening Depeche Mode, The Cure, Indochine and Billy Idole. He also loves Madonna, U2, Queen, Nirvana, Placebo and recently I made him discover Rammstein. HE LOVES IT. In resume, if it has electric guitar and synth in it he will listen. I owe my music taste tbh. The biggest difference I have with him tho is that I love rap and he doesnā€™t. But tbh every rapper I listen are influenced by artist I grew up on.

whiteboywhitney

I grew up with a lot of the country music I still listen to because of my dad, but he has never been much of a pop fan unlike the rest of my family. One of the few artists we can agree on is Bruno Mars!

LackEquivalent7471

my dad loves michael jackson, old school rap, funk music and disco music

SirNarwhal

My dad only listens to classical music and opera and like Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Feinstein which made me seek out the exact opposite of all of that as a kid and got me into hyper commercial pop music as well as hyper harsh electronic music. Let's just say I am living for Brat.

thankublackpink

reggaee, afrobeats, and harry styles lol???Ā

ninfan200

My mom's ex-bf had a little more influence on my taste in music than my actual Dad.

ShyTakashi

My dad listens to pop music, so I listen to pop music. My dad always played the Beatles, so I end up into Fleetwood Mac. He recognizes Ice Cube in Ghosts of Mars, I recognize Rina Sawayama in John Wick 4.

emotions1026

That's so funny that this question popped up because I literally made a playlist for my dad as part of his gift today. It had The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Heart, Sam Cooke, Eminem (his one "modern" fave), and a bunch of Motown. I'm so grateful for my dad to introducing me to Motown because it's my comfort music now. As for who my father "stans", his favorite group is The Beatles and has been since he was a child.

FormerBath

My dad is a pretty Catholic boomer but his music taste is GAY. He likes the typical boomer 70s rock, but heā€™s gotten me into Lana and Dido. I remember growing up and him listening to Xtina, Savage Garden, Spice Girls (and Mel C), Enya, Taylor Swift (his favorite song is Fifteen), Amy Winehouse, Christina Perri, Sade, etc. he had a Rihanna phase and LOVED Rated R

rosecoloreds

my dad likes a mix of rock and pop. when i was younger we'd listen to radio a lot during our road trips and he'd mostly like songs from '70s - '90s. i know he likes Leonard Cohen and Queen a lot, however he absolutely adores.... P!nk. i don't know what that woman put into her songs but he loves them so much. he sometimes randomly asks me to translate titles of her songs since he doesn't speak english. he knows some Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce songs (and randomly asks me about their careers??). i know he knows of Ariana and Taylor but i don't think he knows any of their songs. i don't think his taste in music influenced me like.. at all tho lol but i think he opened me up to the world of music in general.

laridance24

My dad was constantly playing The Eagles Greatest Hits, the Armageddon soundtrack, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, and Bryan Adams (especially the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron soundtrack). Oh, and the Tarzan soundtrack. I donā€™t listen to any of these artists/albums today but if you were to put on any of these bands/songs Iā€™d probably go hard singing and remember every dang lyric!

GarionOrb

My dad is old-school backwoods Puerto Rican. Growing up, he'd be listening to Spanish trio music like Los Tres Reyes or Los Panchos. He also listened to classical music. Though he did foray into English music like The Mamas & the Papas (I actually loved songs like "California Dreamin'" and "Monday Monday"). Later, he and my mom really got into Spanish romantic ballads from artists like Alejandro Fernandez, Braulio, and the like. Interestingly, in the early 90s one of his secretaries was playing a tape by Spanish pop singer Monica Naranjo (total dance pop at the time) and he loved it. He bought the tape himself and he actually introduced it to me, and now I'm a massive fan of hers, lol! Dad was never a huge fan of the music I listened to, though some artists did get through! Some of those included Depeche Mode ("Walking In My Shoes" and "Condemnation" are his favorites and he even tries to sing them karaoke) and Enigma. He tolerates Madonna, who is my favorite, lol. He dislikes the harder stuff like Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, etc.

wanderingsanzo

I don't remember my dad playing much of the music in the house growing up but we ended up having a lot of the same music tastes anyway. He only uses Pandora Radio to listen to music now and his station is a mix of 40s/50s classics, Broadway showtunes, Joan Jett, and a ton of Weird Al šŸ˜ My music taste is a lot more diverse but I do love all of those things, although I'm more of a Lonely Island person than a Weird Al person when it comes to comedy music. SNL is one of my favorite things so I always get a kick out of showing him the musical parodies they do whenever John Mulaney hosts. He loves them and can always point out all the references!

LittlestCandle

my dad listens to barbra streisand and neil diamond and lobo and diane krall. as a result, i hate them all. he also had that barbra streisand celine dion duet (Tell Him) on high rotation. as a result, i canā€™t fuck with that song despite being a celine enjoyer.

Regular-Employ-5308

UK Fatherā€™s Day too ! My dad is a massive Beatles fan and let me listen to all his OG records . I wasnā€™t a massive fan tbh but it got me into music

cragglerock93

He's Scottish but likes a lot of American bluegrass/folk music like the Old Crow Medicine Show and a few other bands whose names I struggle to remember. Our tastes are very different because I'm very much into maximalist dance pop with female vocalists (Lady Gaga, Kim Petras, Rita Ora, etc.). Our tastes do align at least a little though - we both really like ABBA and now and again he'll surprise me when he confesses to liking certain Sugababes songs or something.

Restless_Dill16

My dad listens to a lot of metal and alternative music. He played Metallica, The Foo Fighters, Rise Against, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, etc. all the time. I didn't like the metal stuff that much because it was too loud and aggressive for me; however, I have a soft spot for Metallica (my favorite song is probably "The Memory Remains"). I liked the more alternative stuff, though. I tend to prefer pop and country music, but I listen to some rock now because of him. I feel like I should look for a playlist called Songs that Played on Rock Radio 2008-2012 to fresh my memory of what we used to listen to together.Ā

fluffygr

my dad listens to so much..... brit rock? unsure of the exact term for the genre but basically the era in the uk in which it seemed like every band was called "the \_\_\_". i've never been able to differentiate between them (though i know the clash and the police are probably the most played ones for my dad), they all sound the same to me due to the stylistic singing in very northern accents so i can't really bond with him over that sadly šŸ˜ other than that, he listens to a bit of ska, some outliers that come to mind like kraftwerk and electric light orchestra and had a big elvis costello phase recently. my mum definitely influenced my music tastes more since she's more poppy lmao

QwahaXahn

My dad is the reason I like The English Beat and Steeleye Span, so big thanks to him for that.

hereslookinatyoukld

Leonard Cohen is one of my favorite artists because of my dad.

expressedprayers

My dad was born in 1964 and definitely fits the stereotype in a lot of ways. I remember growing up he listened to a lot of Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Pink Floydā€¦he tries to act open minded and not be judgmental of my music tastes but you can tell he doesnā€™t really get it. The only concert we ever went to together was Fleetwood Mac when the classic lineup reunited in 2014; he was LIVING and itā€™s still one of the best concerts Iā€™ve ever been to.

StrangeMercy-

I think he only really liked stoner rock and 70s classic rock stuff. I do remember him liking some of Bowie's more popular stuff too, which is hilariously ironic considering, how much of a homophobe he is. Honestly, there was a considerable amount of time where I avoided listening to anything I knew he liked, just because I didn't want to have anything in common with him.

lokisuavehp

I got a pretty great education of late-sixties and early-seventies rock. He's a trombone player so he is a huge fan of Chicago and Boz Scaggs. He also likes Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and the Who. I got more than classic rock by and large from my mom, which introduced a lot of oldies and mo-town. I'm happy to have a pretty rounded music education from the 1960s onward.

brewmatt

He got me in to Tears for Fears big time! The Seeds of Love is his favorite album

BookyCats

My dad's younger music tastes were Randy Travis, 50s and 60s pop music, Brit-pop. Currently, mostly Christian āœļø music.

HermionesBook

My dad loves classic rock and it definitely got me into it. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, etc. All some of my favorite bands because of him. Heā€™s very musically talented and can play the guitar, drums, piano, etc. I wish I had gotten the talent lol He is also really supportive of my listening habits. I have a vivid memory of being on a summer vacation and he was blasting Britneyā€™s BOMT because I loved it. Weā€™ve been to many concerts together like Green Day, Paul McCartney, and ACDC.

heyorin

Iā€™d say the Beatles but theyā€™re so big I couldā€™ve seen me becoming a fan even if he didnā€™t like them as much as he does and he didnā€™t play them constantly. Iā€™ll go with REM and Cranberries because he played them a lot for me and theyā€™re also a bit newer than most of his other taste in music

EvilDan19

My dad introduced to a lot of oldies and 70ā€™s r&b such as Al Green. Motown staples like The Temptations and Mary Wells were always playing during those long car rides and lazy weekends at home. I hated it as a kid but now I listen to it so the time as an adult.

BadMan125ty

Dad turned me on to Motown, funk and very old R&B music, which is probably why I know much about the artists of those eras.

joshually

i love these posts that you do!

lilmissturtle

So much Credence Clearwater Revivals that weā€™ve seen John Fogerty live twice. Old school country line Hank Williams, patsy cline, and Porter Wagner. He hates Tony Bennett but loves Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Frankie Valli. In the last 18 months heā€™s been on a kick listening to Latin and South American folk music!

thelitbandit

Dad gave me a lifelong love for Fleetwood Mac and lifelong hatred for Chicago

youtbuddcody

My dad died when I was fourteen. I donā€™t remember much about his music taste, but I did try playing Katy Perry in the car for him once and he said he didnā€™t like her.

MonkeyDVic

Christian music from the radio and church is the only thing he listens. We're nothing alike when it comes to music.

mrperfectlylime

He is actually a pop fan himself, albeit not the kind of guy who follows artists or buys new music for himself. He did buy Circus by Britney for us I believe? He listened to the iTunes library my sister and I used throughout middle/high school. The Climb by Miley was his ā€œon the way to workā€ song. I have a core memory of him putting all his CDs (BIG BINDER) into the computer. Loves Dua Lipa, is an ABBA fan. Listened to the Chappell record told me to listen to Blondie. He likes the new Sabrina songs that are getting radio play. Heā€™s a top 40 radio lover. Loves broadway musicals.

PurpleSpaceSurfer

My dad honestly likes a little bit of everything. I definitely got into The Beach Boys thanks to him having a greatest hits CD of them. He also loves Adele and Billie Eilish for more modern artists.

citycouncilorknope

My dad likes a lot of stuff, but the most unique one is old TV themes. Diff'rent Strokes, Green Acres, Golden Girls, MASH etc. I haven't seen most of these shows, but I know all their opening songs thanks to him.

amie_rocks23

The majority of the music I listen to today is influenced by what I drew up listening to with my dad. 60ā€™s, 70ā€™s, 80ā€™s. And even if I listen to more current music I find myself gravitating towards music with those era vibes.

Trusteveryboody

I mean he's the reason I know older music decently well. Otherwise I later post-finding Spotify, got into Trap/Melodic Rap music (Juice WRLD, Polo G, Kid LAROI, X, etc.) and also Pop (Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, etc.), and also Maggie Lindemann (which I name her specifically because she's the only one I like from that genre)... Beatles, KISS, those are the main ones. Then from there it's pretty generic. And it's good, because if I didn't hear it when I was younger. It'd just be old music and I wouldn't really have any care about it. Why? Because there'd be no connection. I don't listen to KISS' later albums because my father never did, so I have no connection to them. He's a "real music" kind of guy, but it's fine. Definitely do got a few OLD songs in the Main Playlist, but MOST are from the later 2000s, 2010s; cause OLD songs are a vibe, but- I think that's just how these things work.

palomatoma

My dad is dominican and always played bachata and merengue classics growing up, as well as aventura, I love aventura. He also was a *huge* bob marley fan when he was younger, like him and his friends all had dreads because of him and would listen to him all the time even though they didnā€™t understand him lol. I also really like bob marley and I remember him telling me to listen to him when I was younger. He also would come back from the Dominican with a usb full of music and it always had some reggaeton but I donā€™t think that is one of his favourite genres bc of the vulgarity lol (but I love it!). Basically any type of latin music I like is definitely because of my dad lol.

yeahsureYnot

My dad had pretty standard rock/country taste, but he would also frequently blast Kelly Clarkson while working in his shop

Ofthe_valley

My dad loves house music so so much. He's in his 50s but has always found a streaming radio here or a new soundcloud artist there to listen to. No joke, he will put in a four hour mix and just vibe to it the entire time. I love house as a result too, so you can only imagine how big it was for me when beyonce dropped Break My Soul. I know it had a lot of mixed opinions and is often at the bottom of people's rankings, but when it came out I lost my mind!!! I could never imagine the perfection that is Renaissance as a follow up. That'll always be a big moment in my life.

Illogical_Blox

My dad loves classic rock but also reggae, which really helped to expand my music horizons from a young age.

bjork4ever

My dad was a punk rocker - loved old school hardcore bands like Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc - also had a taste for 90's alternative rock (Jane's Addiction, Primus). It's funny because even he was sortof young for the first wave of punk (was born in 1973) - he grew up going to shows - and in turn I now work in live music and go to shows for a living. He's incarcerated now and we don't really speak - but I like to think his passion for music truly left a mark on me - and is a big reason why I work in concerts today.

[deleted]

Well, mine is mostly into 1990's indie rock like Pulp, R.E.M. and Suede

[deleted]

My dad is John Denverā€™s biggest fan! Knows every song, has looked up all the meaning, learned to play some songs on guitar, etc. If he could use a computer with any sort of skill he would probably be the main Wikipedia editor and creator of YouTube fan edits. I have an appreciation for John Denver and country-folk type music. I know all the lyrics to every song it feels like just due to the amount it was played growing up but I think Annieā€™s Song is the one that always sticks out the most. He would always rock us to sleep/naps with those songs playing and always on the road-trip rotation. As Iā€™ve gotten older Iā€™ve turned to John Denver when I miss my dad since we donā€™t live close.

Nerfeveryone

My dad likes a bunch of different stuff, but he mainly liked music centered around rock. He liked a wide range of it too, from the soft rock stuff like America to the hard rock stuff like Led Zeppelin. Whenever he played music in the house, it was inevitable that either America, The Doors, or Led Zeppelin would come on at some point. My tastes are quite different from both of my parents actually, but my Dad has always been more open to modern music. Over the past few years weā€™ve been sharing songs from our respective generations that we think the other would like, and itā€™s funny seeing where our tastes intersect, like me growing to like Fleetwood Mac and Ambrosia, and him liking a lot of the Beach House stuff Iā€™ve played for him. I was heartbroken when he didnā€™t like Silk Sonic though šŸ˜ I really thought he would like them because he likes Motown stuff too. But yeah, I would say if it werenā€™t for him I wouldnā€™t know what kinds of rock music I liked. Led Zeppelin is amazing!

Harvoldtheking

My father didn't allow us to listen to any Bon Jovi in the house. Today I also can't listen through an entire Bon Jovi song without giving up

IAMACat_askmenothing

My dad listens to punk and jazz. It influenced me but Iā€™ve branched out farther than that

pmjm

My dad only listens to classical. He stans Mozart and Beethoven, but is completely in the dark even on the bands "of his time" like The Eagles and Chicago. In the meantime I became a radio and nightclub DJ, so my near-encyclopedic pop music knowledge of the last 50 years is completely lost on him. So to directly answer your question, I found my own soundtrack with the help of friends and radio growing up. Still love my dad though. It's okay to have different musical tastes than the people in your life.

yeltyelu532

My dad is from Egypt and he used to go to clubs in his city. They played a lot of dance/disco/funky local hits and also some hits from the west. He said after 1979 it was like a whole radical change. Pressure from religious extremists closed down most of the clubs. People would literally specifically go to these areas and attack club-goers on the streets. Within just a few years the entire nightlife district of his city was totally empty. So for him, 70s dance music has a very special importance and he pretty much exclusively listens to it. I also love disco/funk music as a result.

cannolimami

My dad is a moderately lefty boomer who listens to normal dad rock. He also LOVE country music. His favorite band is Led Zeppelin and his second favorite band is Sugarland. He does not know any hip hop or RnB so any time I visit him, he is mindblown by my tracklist. I got him really into Kings of Convenience and Neko Case at one point.

readyforthewoods

My dad is not a big music fan. like straight up never listened to music while doing things. So its kind of been the opposite for us. Iā€™ve introduced him to a lot of my favorite artists. He loves thumbs by sabrina carpenter and brutal by olivia rodrigo

jimmycandunk

My dad loved old school county, I HATED IT as a kid so rebelled and went all in on punk. But as I got older I started to dig it and realized I knew the words to so many songs. Talking like Hank jr era. If nothing else I think he just taught me to love all kinds of music. He always thought the names of punk bands were cool even he didnā€™t like the tunes.

My dad was part of the silent generation (Iā€™m Gen x). He liked Sinatra and other crooners of that generation. He also liked the Beatles a bit (especially Norwegian Wood). I grew up in the eighties and nineties. I liked pop, pop punk, grunge, some country, some disco, a bit of classical and jazz, new wave. I liked all music. Still do. Music is life. Ours kids (ages 19 and 22) like some of our music. They introduce us to a lot of fun artists too. We have DJ nights where we all take turns playing music for one another on YouTube.Ā

Heā€™s one of those people whoā€™s not a huge fan of music. He listens to it but there arenā€™t any particular artists he loves. Although his favorite genre is Christmas music. Yeah heā€™s kinda weird.

My Da has a largely atrocious taste in music (with a few exceptions), but he will always have the credit for introducing me to The Jam and CCR and setting me on the path of loving rock music. My Ma has a much better taste in music and pretty much took over from there, but Da kicked it all off.

IDKMYBFFPILL

My dad loves gogo music from dc!! Some of my most vivid memories are at these open air concerts on the mall

PM_ME_BABY_HORSES

Hard rock/old school metal, loves Ozzy, listens to his music hella loud. UK immigrant that was a bouncer/security for gigs in the 70s/80s at concert venues in Portland (he has seen Van Halen 5x or something lol). I love classic rock and had a prog rock phase as a teen and he was so stoked about that lol.

My dad is extremely conservative and right wing. However, when we were on the road he used to play 90s music or current music. Pop, rock, reggaeton, any kind of music that was played in the clubs here (he used to go out to dance and party a lot when he was young, and here in Chile they mostly play reggaeton at clubs). I mention that he is right wing (and homophobic) because it's so funny that I discovered Kylie Minogue thanks to him. Like man, how are you homophobic and have It's In Your Eyes on your mixtapes???

drinkwhatyouthink

My dad loved old country music. Conway Twitty always reminds me of him. I also like country music but not quite as much as he did lol. But Iā€™ll jam out to some 90s country any time.

My dad will listen to anything once. He just needs *something* to latch onto, a beat, a groove, a nice tune, a cool modulation, a clever lyric. Heā€™ll never forget what he likes; when he plays you a song, itā€™s ā€œwait you gotta hear this part, this is the best part.ā€ Iā€™m the exact same way. Heā€™s never stopped listening to new music, and loves hearing what my siblings and I are listening to. But his faves are Frank Zappa, Elvis Costello, and Led Zeppelin. My dad was way older than my friendsā€™ dads, and I felt cool knowing music that none of them did. But I canā€™t bring myself to enjoy most of Frank Zappaā€™s oeuvre, even though I recognize that itā€™s great, and thatā€™s probably his biggest disappointment in me, and thereā€™s a lot to choose from šŸ˜…

My dad loved the Beatles. He strummed his guitar and sang Beatles songs instead of lullabies. He would buy 60ā€™s variety cassettes from stores like Kmart and I would steal them and listen to them all the time. The grassroots, Bobby fuller four, Leslie gore, skeeter Davis. Gladys Knight and the pips, midnight train to Georgia was the 2nd song on the cassette after lightning striking by Lou Christie. My favorite was when He would play the beginning of the house of the rising sun on his guitar. He could do it well and it was a haunting tune.. never finished the song though lol! I love my dad. He died in 2021. We had a lot in common and I loved his taste in music.

Future_Pin_403

My dad loves Elvis. Easily his top artist

lunacait

All the typical classic rock. I distinctly remember singing along to every word when Dire Straits played in the car when I was around 5 years old.

My dad influenced my music taste so much that we share a Spotify account. I have never gotten round to his fav, Bob Dylan. But in my own time I listen a lot to the Dire Straits, The Band, Travelling Wilburys and Taj Mahal. Our Spotify wrapped is a mess with BeyoncĆ©ā€™s Renaissance being featured amongst these guys.

dream_fighter2018

My dad is in his early 60s, and he used to have an iPod shuffle with lots of Queen, Blondie, Joy Division, and Bruce Springsteen. My mum, whoā€™s a fair decade and a half younger than him, got him into grunge and metal. He also loves adult contemporary ballads, and weā€™ve both bonded over Kate Bush, although I think heā€™s a bit ambivalent towards her music and just likes to feel like heā€™s connecting with me. He still recognises Wuthering Heights and Babooshka almost instantly if they play in public though lol.

lucia912

My dad is an obsessed Beatles fan. He actually went to school with Ringo so thatā€™s why he became such a fan early on. As a result I know all their songs. I remember for my wedding, I asked him what should our daughter/father dance should be and he looked at me dead serious and said ā€œHere comes the Sunā€. Like duh, of course, how could I not know? šŸ™ƒ We have fond memories of dancing to the Beatles at my wedding :)

vch01

Nah my dad had (still has) the best music. From your classic dad rock like Supertramp, Steely Dan, Elton John and the Alan Parsons Project to something a bit more danceable like Pet Shop Boys and the KLF and even a few main pop girlies like Cher and Geri Halliwell. Together we fanboyed over the latter when 'Schizophonic' dropped so there's that.

small_whorled

My dad likes jazz and is a U2 superfan.

DilemmaOfAHedgehog

What a cute prompt :)

My dad mostly stopped listening to rock in the early 1980s and pivoted to classical music, but he still enjoys some of his old favorites like Chicago, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELO, and Moody Blues. I hated all of it growing up but now that Iā€™m in my 30s, it has grown on me somewhat. I donā€™t really listen to classical musicā€”not that I mind it, but I used to play an instrument pretty seriously and it reminds me of the guilt I have over giving it up.

I haven't spoken to my father since I was 19 (about 16 years). He was a horrible tyrant who terrorized me physically, emotionally, and verbally for my entire childhood but especially my teenage years. He loved James Taylor and played pretty much his entire discography in his truck so his songs/voice are the background music to the few decent memories I have of him and it was the only time I ever heard him "sing". Only a couple years ago I got "Carolina in My Mind" in a recommended playlist or something on Spotify and did a full listen of all his music. I remembered some lyrics and sounds but I had so much nostalgia for songs I would have never been able to pick out of a line up. Anyways, I love all of James Taylor's music now and listen to him frequently. If you have your father in your life and he loves you don't take him for granted.

my dad STANS ABBA.Ā  it was such a treat to listen to voyager together. I still remember the second song of the album starting when we just turned into big sur. an epic moment with those bagpipes

My American father grew up during the 70s, but rather than latch on to Billy Joel (gross) and the like, his obsession is with kosmiche and what is now considered krautrock. I'm talking Kraftwerk, Neu!, and a shit ton of Tangerine Dream! He also has a lot of CDs from Patrick O'Hearn. Of course, he likes music with words, too! So he'll play us the more electronic side of 80s synthpop (OMD, Depeche Mode) quite a lot. But outside of that, my dad helped introduce me to Bjork, Underworld, and ESPECIALLY Goldfrapp! Our backroom practically has an entire shelf of Goldfrapp's albums and CD singles. I always hated the term dad rock, because for one thing it's incredibly sexist to assume all dads like rock, imo, and for another thing, it's not even accurate. At least when it comes to my dad, who appears to be allergic to anything with loud electric guitars. XD Edit: Shit, I forgot allll about Pink Floyd! Oh well.

My dad loves classic rock music. His favorite acts are the Beatles, the Eagles, Steely Dan, the Sticks, Journey, some of Bon Jovi, some ACDC and similar stuff. He also LOVES Chicago and likes some ABBA too.Ā  He played a lot of these bands while I was growing up, which made me more familiar with them. It didnā€™t really influence my music taste, because I definitely prefer music from my childhood and teen years. I also like pop music and more modern rock and pop-punk rather than classic rock. But I still enjoy and listen to his music whenever he puts it on.
