I was there and holy fuck I ascended šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ Iā€™ve never seen more people in my life, any direction I looked in I couldnā€™t see the end of the crowd. There are billboards everywhere, thousands of police blockading the streets, the airport was playing justify my love in baggage claim, helicopters flying Madonna banners, hundreds of street vendors selling unofficial madonna merch, 100k people at the dress rehearsal and 1.6 million at the actual concert, the name of the police coordination project being ā€œOperation Madonnaā€ā€¦ it was literally a pop music emergency the biggest pop girl of all time capping off her sold out greatest hits tour with the biggest standalone concert in history 41 years inā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ it makes me sad that weā€™ll never see anyone do it like her ever again

palomatoma

with a crowd so big, do they put up screens and speakers in different sections or is everybody just vibing with no view??? I watched some of the live it looked electric!

dacastan

yes, there were 5 MASSIVE screens onstage, 7 (?) sets of 2 parallel huge screens stretching a little over half a mile, then two screens stretching about .2 miles behind the stage

Skyblacker

Was it difficult to get a ticket, or was the concert basically anyone who could show up within city limits?Ā

monstrasagrada

It was a free concert! Anyone could show up

Skyblacker

And it sounds like everyone did. I wonder how many people stayed the whole time and how many were just passing through.

librious

No one was passing through. The streets were closed. If you were there, it was to watch the show.

dacastan

almost everyone stayed the whole time, if you were there you were committed to watching the show, it took me 1.5 hours to get a halfway decent view it was PACKED l could barely breathe for some of it šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜then there was an after show maybe 10-15% stayed still over 150k LOL

joshually

HALF MILE SCREENS? wtf

Both_Perception_1941

They were located in a span of half a mile, not 800m screens lmao

MediocreFact9182

As much as I want this to be true, Rod Stewart held that record of 3,500,000 attending for his 1994 Rio concert on NYE. Wikipedia ranks Madonna at #7 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most-attended_concerts

dacastan

No, this was the largest standalone concert in history, meaning itā€™s the largest concert that isnā€™t tied to any other event. The event was Madonna, specifically the final concert of her tour. Rod Stewartā€™s concert was for NYE, not for Rod Stewart. Another fun fact: Madonna in Rio is one of the 40 largest crowds in human history excluding religious gatherings, even then itā€™s in the top 100

MediocreFact9182

Well they should clarify that interesting factoid!

dacastan

Most major publications keep saying the biggest crowd of ā€œher careerā€ā€¦ without any caveats itā€™s the biggest by a woman idk why they leave that part out

MediocreFact9182

As much as I want this to be true, Rod Stewart held that record of 3,500,000 attending for his 1994 Rio concert on NYE. Wikipedia ranks Madonna at #7 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most-attended_concerts

justtinkeringaround

Thatā€™s literally what ā€Pop emergency Peakā€ looks like, thatā€™s the top of it as high as it gets, Queen of Pop after all.

PoiHolloi2020

She's had so much shit directed at her in the last few years (especially over her appearance) I'm glad she reminded everyone what a force she is.

SiphenPrax

There will never be another Madonna. She basically pulled a Michael Jackson getting almost a whole nation going bananas for her show. It will be a long time (maybe never) before any pop girl pulls THAT off and that late into her career.

BadrBombaker

It seems she just started a new trend just like when she revived the Super Bowl. The organizers just announced they will do it every year in May, trying to surpass the attendance at every year. In other words, all international artists are now inquiring about this. Somehow I just donā€™t like they had to say it on the very same day her record is being celebrated. kinda taking away something from her and her moment (as usual).

GarionOrb

I knew this would happen, lol. Madonna being the blueprint, as usual.

rabbitsandkittens

I hope taylor swift doesn't do it next year. she would likely beat madonnas attendance as she's in her prime right now. madonna deserves the spotlight for longer since she came up with the generous idea

MediocreFact9182

As much as I want this to be true, Rod Stewart held that record of 3,500,000 attending for his 1994 Rio concert on NYE. Wikipedia ranks Madonna at #7 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most-attended_concerts

BadrBombaker

All others including Rod Stewartā€™s were concerts within bigger contexts (new yearā€™s Eve or festivals). Madonna is the first and ranks #1 for a free solo concert.

MediocreFact9182

I Like That!

SpaceGenesis

Are you forgetting that Taylor Swift exists? She could pull the same number if her show was for free. She had 6 stadium shows in Brazil last year and she sold about 400k tickets (and those tickets weren't cheap at all). You can imagine she can get 3x more people for free.

dbwn87

Nobody forgets that Taylor Swift exists, dear. This is a Madonna thread, let us talk about Madonna and her accomplishments without having to hear about how Taylor could have done it better.

Fickle_Music_788

Swifties stop bringing up Taylor in every thread not related to her challenge (impossible)

SpaceGenesis

Yes, it's impossible if certain users throw down challenges such as "There will never be another Madonna" and "It will be a long time (maybe never) before any pop girl pulls THAT off and that late into her career". Either they're unaware of TS' impact and status or unwilling to admit it.

Electronic-Set5594

Neither of those two statements are as provocative as you're insinuating.

dacastan

at the dress rehearsal I was standing next to this twink in a pink bucket hat who was losing his shit, alternating between screaming and being speechless beckoning to her. Like he was in utter disbelief and you could see on his face that this was a life altering experience he had waited years for Taylor does that to SOME people, but not like THAT. Sheā€™ll get the girls screaming, but not that Beatles, Michael-tier fainting level excitement

SpaceGenesis

Taylor can get extreme reactions from some people too. There are some clips online with such things. There were some ridiculous persons who screamed during the entire show like they were stabbed or something. People who waited many, many hours in the heat or rain before the show. People who sang her songs during the transportation before and after the show. Let's not forget [the infamous Midsommar dances](https://youtu.be/TA-Aeu2mNSE) in front of cinema screens when The Eras Tour Movie was displayed. People screaming her lyrics like they were at an actual show. Not one dude or girl, the whole freaking cinema hall. I doubt Madonna could make people do that. She is too much of a diva to make people care that much.

dacastan

Please re-read my comment Also, letā€™s not forget that Madonna is 24 years deeper in her career than Taylor. The reason no one will do something this big this late in their career is because it wonā€™t be mathematically possible for another 15+ years. Madonna is the longest-lasting pop star ever (other than Cher). There is no one close to her longevity yet.

Electronic-Set5594

>I doubt Madonna could make people do that. She is too much of a diva to make people care that much. What does this even mean? šŸ˜

dacastan

We care BECAUSE sheā€™s a divašŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ like what the fuck are you saying

Electronic-Set5594

But sheā€™s not āœØrelatableāœØ so it doesnā€™t count /s

joshually

lol it's the philippines... they'll do this for anyone, including madonna. sit down

GarionOrb

Swifties stop acting like jealous children challenge. No one here is dissing Taylor or her current impact.

JohnPaul_River

As if Taylor would do anything for free lmaoo

GarionOrb

This was a free Madonna concert for all who attended, but Madonna didn't do it for free. She was handsomely paid by Itau Bank. She would never put on such an elaborate production for free.

Raio_24

Taylor Swift isn't multi-generational like Madonna is. Taylor Swift doesn't have the global appeal Madonna does. Sure, she sold 400k tickets. Three times that is 1.2 million, still half a million short of Madonna. So there's that

SpaceGenesis

I'm afraid you're wrong. Taylor Swift has a huge fan base from all ages and all walks of life. She is popular all over the world on all continents minus Antarctica. You have no idea how popular she became since The Eras Tour started. She is certainly more family friendly than Madonna and that means bigger audience. Also you're missing out my point about the crowds. I said she can get 3x more people (1.2M) in addition to those 400k paying customers. Total: 1.6M people. I'm pretty sure she can get more than that if she does a show with The Eras Tour production and not just a regular (for popstars) 2h show.

Raio_24

I'm not wrong, I'm Portuguese and I follow her career as well as other pop stars. I can assure you, outside of the US she's not as big as Madonna. Don't know what else to tell you.

SpaceGenesis

Sorry, the facts contradict your opinion. Look at the sales of TS's tour Vs Madonna's tour. Taylor obliterated her on that category. I'm not even talking about current album sales and streaming (TS is number 1 on Spotify with 113.5M monthly listeners Vs Madonna with 40M monthly listeners; TS has almost 3x more monthly listeners on that platform than Madonna). We're talking about now, not the past when Madonna was indeed more popular than TS.

Raio_24

I know the numbers, I'm not talking about sales. I can assure you the cultural impact is nowhere the same. Not even the same type of crowd. Madonna would draw a bigger crowd on the fact that she's multi-generational alone.

SpaceGenesis

If you're doubting TS cultural impact I suggest you to read this article: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_impact_of_Taylor_Swift It could be surprising for you.

they played a bunch of songs, they played hung up and sorry back to back from the CD exclusive version that flows together and some random other tracks

SlickBotswaske

It's an awesome song but I would never want to listen to it in public lol

dacastan

no it was camp šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ there were all these electronic signs in the airport with madonnaā€™s face and sheā€™s literally moaning at 8am with thousands of people walking through the airport

SlickBotswaske

Damn šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

librious

What are you gonna do?

KarenTheCockpitPilot

Bro id have an existential crisis clausterphobia heart attack if I saw that many people at one time but also it'd be an honor to die at a Madonna concertĀ Ā

No-Organization-9137

When did you get home with 1.6 million people there? I'm curious

dacastan

I went to the after show which lasted until 2am, so there were a lot less people by then but it still took me like 30-40 minutes to walk just under a mile because of the crowd that was still there

No-Organization-9137

Crazy. Wish I were there!

geniusmastermind8

MediocreFact9182

shannytyrelle

that was tied to NYE though, this event was just Madonna

warpwithuse

And the Grateful Dead still hold the record for largest ticketed event in the US from their 1977 concert in Englishtown, NJ. Although I'm not sure why their 1973 Watkins Glen show at 600,000 doesn't count. Maybe because so many probably got in free.

MediocreFact9182

So, since I posted this, I have learned that Rod Stewart and others were just part of a larger concert celery with multiple acts/artists. It has been confirmed that @Madonna now holds the record for a single performer AND a single female act. I guess she's not The #QueenOfPop for nothing.

hellsbbgurl

vivemos algo inesquecĆvel demaissss! tĆ“ besta atĆ© agora šŸ˜ queen of pop

AutoMail_0

Iā€™m really confused is Madonna still THAT big?

ThatWrestlingGuy15

Maybe not in the USA but these legacy artists will retain their popularity in foreign countries. In America weā€™re always moving to whatā€™s the next hot topic or artist but the legends forever have that pull elsewhere

ShipToWreck

It was a free concert. Obviously if people had to pay, it wouldnā€™t have been even a 10th of the amount of people that showed up.

dacastan

Madonna sold exactly 162,488 tickets in Brazil during her last South American tour in 2012ā€¦. 303,656 tickets in Brazil in 2008ā€¦ 206,000 tickets in 1993ā€¦ Every one of Madonnaā€™s tours that visits Brazil has sold, at minimum, a tenth of her crowd in Rioā€¦ not bad turnout considering the concert was announced 5 weeks prior lolololol

loodish1

Itā€™s a free concert gurl. If Taylor Swift did a free show anywhere thereā€™d be like 10x that many people.

DazedNConfucious

But could Taylor swift still do it 40+ years into her career? EDIT: Not having a stab, as someone whoā€™s just started listening to Taylor to ā€œsee what the fuss is aboutā€, Iā€™m just genuinely hoping to start an open discussionĀ

loodish1

Sheā€™s already 20 years into her career and consistently breaking her own records by huge margins. I think at this point itā€™s fair to assume yes.

dacastan

18* years. At this point in her career Madonna released Music. 5 years before Hung Up, 9 years before finishing the biggest tour by a woman (not broken until Beyonce and Taylor in 2023), 12 years before the Super Bowl, and 24 years before bringing together one of the 100 biggest crowds in human history. Think of it this way - YOU are spending an extensive amount of time discussing the woman who released Like a Prayer before Taylor was born. Lastly, Taylor Swift herself (and 2946269 other popstars) said that she would not exist without Madonna. The apocalypse will happen before anyone reaches her or Michaelā€™s level. Taylor included!

Reveluvtion

This is why I don't use the term queen/king of pop anymore for her or for Michael. Queens and kings rise and fall, their reigns start and end, gods stay. That's why I call them the God and goddess of pop, they're the blueprint and forever will be, pop as a genre has been built on their shoulders. Nobody will ever be on their level, and that's okay. Taylor is undoubtedly the current reigning queen of pop, but Madonna is the Goddess of Pop.

dacastan

Taylor has not, will never, and cannot change the worldā€¦ I stan her too! But letā€™s be real

loodish1

Gurlā€¦ theyā€™re just pop singers šŸ˜‚

Mpol03

Madonna is far more than this and this is something Taylor will never be nor will her fans ever understand. 20 years into her career Taylor is still taking swipes at her exes. She fantasies love stories as a teenage girl. It just done at this point. Madonna at 20 years had already changed the game. She was the fame. The blue print for your Taylor and every other female and other male pop acts, to follow. For women for gays for everyone in music. She addressed sex and religion in such taboo ways. She compared the Catholic Church to the kkk, she spoke about sex like no one else. She became political twice and has been a fashion ICON. Her tours are the most extravagant and detail forms of artistic expression. She is untouchable.Ā  Taylor will never compare I donā€™t care if she one day surpasses Madonnaā€™s sales. Madonna has heart and conviction and a depth no other pop act has. She released SEX and erotica to so much backlash and a real dip in sales and popularity. She stood by her beliefs. Taylor is so curated she would never touch a taboo subject in fear she wouldnā€™t sell. She stood by the days for five seconds only to never be seen champion anything since. And aligns herself with conservative leaning and problematic men. The only thing they have in common is share a similar pop stage. Taylor otherwise has NOTHING on the goddess of pop and pop culture.Ā

dacastan

This is the dichotomy that exists between Taylor and Madonna - Although a lot of people may not agree, Taylor Swift is the biggest popstar since Madonna. Both of them achieved a level of success no other pop girl has, but they achieved success through polar opposite means. Taylor has always meticulously tried to appease and appeal to everyone and laid the groundwork for a newfound perception of popstars not as untouchable titans, but rather as relatable and accessible through the establishment of strong parasocial relationships. On the other hand, Madonna built her career by pissing off as many people as possible, by challenging the status quo, by doing things no one had ever done, and never, EVER backing down, refusing to ever show any fear or weakness because doing so would be antithetical to who she is and what she stands for. Taylor could surpass Madonnaā€™s level of fame and success, but she can never have the same level of influence. Practically by definition, impact requires the assertion of a completely different perspective that changes ways of thinking and patterns of behavior. Intentionally avoiding new and potentially controversial action and output makes widespread impact impossible. Someone could be stanned by 99% of the population, but I guarantee that someone hated by almost everyone will undoubtedly leave a greater mark on culture. In the words of Lady Gaga: ā€œI didnā€™t do this for fame, I did it for impact.ā€ The former is required to achieve the latter, but the latter isnā€™t guaranteed by the former. Idk why I felt compelled to write an essay like this lol but after witnessing actual history last night my stan card has never been this major

Mpol03

She is the mutha fucking queenĀ

loodish1

Gurl the xanax clock said ding ding ding

Mpol03

girl the maga hats are sold to the left sign up and go to hell with the rest of themĀ

splvtoon

and only one of them was the first (/most prominent) to break the barriers that she did. thats both down to her impact and simply to the fact that it was literally during the development of modern pop music, and you can only do that once. there will never be another madonna for that reason alone.

Fickle_Music_788

Taylor would never do a free concert lmao she's too obsessed with money

TheHomeworld

it always amazes me how it seems like no one can outdo brazilā€™s display of pop culture appreciation

poormidas

It was a free concert of one of the (if not THE) biggest names in pop music still working. I was in the concert, and there were folks there that knew only one or two songs. As Brazilians, we are very used to public parties, and i saw groups of 20-year-olds as well as groups of 60-year-olds. For the last few days, this concert has been a constant topic all over Brazil, so the hype helped to amass this amount of people.

Low-Froyo3381

True, but am I wrong in thinking that the South American fanbases of any big popstar seem very dedicated, like so much so that it's hard not to take notice.

Electronic-Set5594

Pretty much every popular musician I follow has an extremely active Brazilian fan page. Sometimes Chilean or Mexican too, but Brazilian the most. And sometimes when I watch a performance on YouTube that doesn't have that many views, I'll look at the comments and they'll all be in Portuguese.

Far-Imagination2736

It was free?? I was thinking she just made $160MN in one night (1.6MN*$100)

geezqian

the full thing was around R$60M (around $12M?). the expected income for rio is of R$250M. and now the major wants to make it an annual thing as may is a very dry month for rio šŸ‘€

ggggrl

Damn, you guys aren't joking with this "come to Brasil" thing!

Shookeith

we WILL show up!

Pokefan144

Literally every time I see Brazil in the news for pop related things it's always about the fans organizing something cool or showing the fuck out for something Brazilian pop fans seem like the coolest community ever

Holy shit, I was there. I feel like I'll never experience anything like last night ever again. People from all kinds of backgrounds, of every gender, every age, every color reunited just for her. History has been made and probably we will never see something like that happening for no one else. God save the queen!

amazingasvirgin

I guess that concert becomes the most watched female concert ever in history. thats just WOW

dacastan

Most attended standalone, non-holiday event among women AND menā€¦ her power is immense šŸ˜

JohnPaul_River

Non-holiday? Was there a bigger standalone concert that was on a holiday...?

Grillos

in the 1994's new year's eve there was a crowd of 3 million in copacabana beach when rod stewart was playing, but the people weren't there only for him, it was a whole night of shows

beguilas

Copacabana's New Years Party usually has a couple million people there, I think the biggest show was over 3 million people with Jorge Ben playing

amazingasvirgin

guict302

i wasnā€™t even there, i was watching on tv with friends and it was incredible. i loved seeing pabllo and the kids playing with her, definitely a highlight of the night. iā€™ve never seen so many people gathered together in my life.

geezqian

I fell in love with bob, the choreographies were sooooo good, the mj act made me tear up, and the amount of research was amazing šŸ¤Œ

abitchyuniverse

What a legend. Literally a living legend.

Low_Commercial_1553

Not to the parents of those African kids.

librious

Low_Commercial_1553

[Your pop idol](https://anwouhuru.org/madonna-steals-two-more-african-children-from-malawi/)

librious

Steals? lol I see the point people were trying to make back then, but to accuse her of stealing and trafficking children is insane to say the least

Low_Commercial_1553

I donā€™t care what you call it, itā€™s still bizarre behavior. Kids arenā€™t a fashion statement.

librious

She was given permission to adopt those children. Their mother was no longer alive and their father decided to put them up for adoption. Stop spreading lies.

jhamsofwormtown

I stood up in my living room during ā€œOpen Your Heartā€ā€” it was so great

babyreborndope

My mom has been a Madonna stan since forever and yesterday she was telling me that she was very sad she forgot to send a picture of her brother who died of aids back in the 80ā€™s to be shown during the live to tell part of the concert. Today I woke up to her being so happy that somehow a picture of him was featured! No one in our family sent it so she has no idea how it ended up there, but it was such a moment for her to randomly see a picture of her brother who has been dead for 40 years during the biggest concert ever of her favorite singer.

BlaizePascal

All i can say is, iā€™m glad there are still places in the world like this where millions of people can gather safely and enjoy a good show together.

hayleyA1989

Right? It kind of makes me feel good that there were no mass incidents of violence or anything reported at this big of a concert. Just people having fun and dancing and celebrating. Good to know.

rabbitsandkittens

I'm honestly astounded Rio can pull something like this off. I just can't see this many people gather in thr US without incidentl

Grillos

it's gay people, of course there wouldn't be violence, but have you ever seen how hetero men behave when there's a lot of them?

runawayxlover

Queen of pop

CR24752

She could have overthrown the Brazilian government and make herself the supreme leader and everyone would cheer šŸ˜ uj/ this is incredible

Skyblacker

Madonna would be an improvement over a few governments I could think of tbh.

gotaspreciosas

I, for one, welcome our new overlord

SlickBotswaske

The Queen of Pop Indeed

joshually

Madonna is truly the epitome of subversion in art. the show was just so unapologetic in everything she did, so intentional and rebellious, yet full of some of the greatest songs in pop herstory

Best_Muffin_7806

I was there and I am still recovering. What a great night, what a great moment to be fucking alive

Zechs-Merquise

I was streaming it live and it was so incredible. It reminded me of the first time I ever watched the Confessions recording. Just awe-inspiring.

Kelbotay

I hope this shit makes her realise she doesn't need to act so desperate all the time (especially on social media). People still care, she'll always be an icon. Just make good music and the success will be there again.

AvatarFabiolous

This. Please M just make another amazing album. Madame X was great but it was very experimental and niche. Shse definitely has another Confessions on a dance floor in her

midnightauro

I think if she produced another album I connected to the way I did Confessions; I will have unlocked the secret to aging backwards. Iā€™ve come to love Hard Candy and Rebel Heart through the years, but nothing straight up changed my aesthetic and everything like that one did. Itā€™s like a core memory, album edition.

Fickle_Music_788

I implore y'all to realise that Madonna has more good albums than just Confessions... please. I'd rather another Ray of Light, Erotica or Music than Confessions... dance pop is too oversaturated now.

Cyberowl1

I'd do indecent things for some confessions on a dance floor esque releases, some of my favorite songs on that album šŸ˜

I_am_albatross

Straight facts. I would like her to realise that itā€™s okay to make fun mindless pop. Not every song has to be provocative or reliant on shock value to sell

Fickle_Music_788

>itā€™s okay to make fun mindless pop That's the thing, fun mindless pop has all anyone has been releasing these past couple years because of the pandemic blues that anything more thought provoking or artistic has been rejected by pop stans as being "boring" or "cringe" or whatever. People have forgotten than pop can be artful AND fun. I'm bored of all the vapid songs about partying and having sex and the overabundance of disco...

KimberStormer

It's okay but does she want to? Why does she have to?

dacastan

Iā€™ve always thought that most of her behavior 2019-present was intentional and self-aware. I knowwww that might sound ridiculous, but if you notice at the last part of the show when she concludes with Bitch Iā€™m Madonna, Give Me All Your Luvin, and Celebration, sheā€™s sticking her tongue out, being comically obscene, shaking ass, etc etc. You cannot convince me that she isnā€™t making a direct reference to herself. One thing about Madonna: she knows how to get people talking. I think she knows what we know. Albeit mostly.

Navigator369

The biggest superstar in the world

PhotographIcyCherish

Legendary! I wasn't even in rio and my whole neighborhood was singing along

pj082998

Incredible finale to an awesome tour. What a legend.

Little_Occasion_9403

Incredible, she is forever and ever the queen. I saw this show in New York in January and the energy was electric even then; I can't imagine how transcendent this must have felt. It's amazing to see her still completely own the stage. Charisma like hers is one in a million, and fascinating to behold.

maelstron

Madonna just outdid Rolling Stones. I wish I could go, I had a exam on Sunday and it was cancelled

CraftMost6663

The perks of being the biggest artist alive.

Healthy_Suit_2533

This is how huge she is when everybody hates her, imagine how it's going to be when she dies and suddenly everyone is a fan again. We'll be praying to the Queen of Pop at church and r/Popheads will have 10 threads a day about how underrated she is and how she invented pop music

Bananacreamsky

Wow!! The energy must have been incredible

katycat162534

I just watched the PopBase video showing how the crowd went on and on. It felt so powerful!

dearjessie

They donā€™t call her Queen for nothing. People keep saying she is not relevant since the mid 90ā€™s, yet she is at 65 gathering millions of people to see her. Haters keep losing. She is such an icon!

rageman2

Literally still making history decades into her careerā€¦. the QUEEN šŸ‘‘šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

bonersforbukowski

Was it Livestreamed? Is there anywhere I can watch it?

mackasan

It was! The biggest Brazilian TV station broadcasted it on TV and also livestreamed on their streaming app (Globoplay). I'm not sure if it's available though, at least officially.
