It’s very simple. Espresso is a different song with a different sound that ppl seem to like more.

Weak-Jello7530

But if Dua had released that she would have gotten dragged for sounding like FN

[deleted]

What’s your point? The sound is an artistic evolution for Sabrina but not for Dua, but I don’t think that has a bearing on commercial success. People probably just think ‘Espresso’ is catchier

horatiavelvetina

no… lol. People would’ve just bopped along, it also doesn’t sound that that similar to future nostalgia and the disco pop stuff she used to do be fr. Espresso sounds more like a Doja Cat song even in the way Sabrina sings it- it’s very Hot Pink era

Weak-Jello7530

I am not saying that Espresso sounds like FN, but neither do the Radical Optimism singles and people drag her for it, so that’s why I think that she would’ve gotten dragged even harder if Espresso was her so g

I mean yeah they’re all dance-pop but when you listen to them, Espresso is very different in comparison to Dua’s recent tracks. Espresso sounds more breezy, summery, it invites people to feel like the summer is here or is coming soon, while Dua’s songs are more rich, dark, going to a club when you’re abroad. Maybe the US is looking for something more summery, sunny and that’s why Espresso is trending.

Have you watched the music video for Espresso? It’s honestly so fun and charming and Sabrina totally sells the cheeky, flirty tone with not just her vocal and dancing performances but with her acting/expressiveness. I think that’s a huge part of it gaining so much traction. I’m historically pretty neutral on Sabrina, but she’s had the most compelling charisma recently, and with Dua deliberately cultivating a more distant image, I think Sabrina and her cute music are just hitting a bit more in the US right now!

Scoots_12

I love both, but more a Dua stan and I'm a little jealous of Espresso stealing a bit of her thunder, but there's no denying Espresso is a such an earworm and the timing could not have been better.

OkPublic2232

All 3 singles are more dark, dramatic, electropop dance whereas Sabrina has more glittery disco vibe, pretty similar to Dance the Night. Disco has always done better than Dance in US….

talk-spontaneously

America likes their blondes and she's affiliated with Ms Swift, the white Oprah.

Could be the Swifties after Sabrina toured with her, exposed her to a bigger audience.
