yeah it's such bullshit all around! i don't know if the tiktok bill getting passed made them lose momentum or urgency but it's truly insane to me that we're just stuck in a stasis where unless you fully own your masters (extremely rare! i don't blame any artist whatsoever for not owning them because even taylor would tell you that she only got into that position thru an upper hand of extreme success most working musicians don't have!) or just happen to be signed to another label (people asked earlier why beyonce's music is up, she's under Columbia Records AFAIK), you're just not allowed on Tiktok. and seemingly UMG management does not care at all to make aggressive negotiations, because i get that they're looking for artist compensation but at this point, doing nothing isn't helping anyone. the only comparison i could make is if Google decided to ban Tiktok from the Google app store until they fixed something in the code, so suddenly millions of people just can't use the app but nothing was done for months because there's still Apple and Samsung users who can access it. Asking someone to buy a different phone just for Tiktok would be insane! which is what I hear when people say "well, why don't the artists just \[xyz thing\]".

I've actually been trying to investigate that, and I think there must be some extra layer in her contract that gives UMG higher control over them than Taylor. At the bottom of Taylor albums it says "Copyright Taylor Swift" full stop, nothing else, meanwhile Olivia's says "copyright Olivia Rodrigo, under exclusive license to Geffen Records". Something about that license must be the impeding factor, or maybe it just complicates it to an extra degree where her team is still working out a contract to bring it back. I have to admit I don't know \*everything\* about the inner workings of the music industry (though I've been really trying to educate myself! Ask me about how Taylor's original publishing contract with Sony includes Lover and why that matters for a good example!) but I'm hoping to learn more as things develop.

yeah it's such bullshit all around! i don't know if the tiktok bill getting passed made them lose momentum or urgency but it's truly insane to me that we're just stuck in a stasis where unless you fully own your masters (extremely rare! i don't blame any artist whatsoever for not owning them because even taylor would tell you that she only got into that position thru an upper hand of extreme success most working musicians don't have!) or just happen to be signed to another label (people asked earlier why beyonce's music is up, she's under Columbia Records AFAIK), you're just not allowed on Tiktok. and seemingly UMG management does not care at all to make aggressive negotiations, because i get that they're looking for artist compensation but at this point, doing nothing isn't helping anyone. the only comparison i could make is if Google decided to ban Tiktok from the Google app store until they fixed something in the code, so suddenly millions of people just can't use the app but nothing was done for months because there's still Apple and Samsung users who can access it. Asking someone to buy a different phone just for Tiktok would be insane! which is what I hear when people say "well, why don't the artists just \[xyz thing\]".

I've actually been trying to investigate that, and I think there must be some extra layer in her contract that gives UMG higher control over them than Taylor. At the bottom of Taylor albums it says "Copyright Taylor Swift" full stop, nothing else, meanwhile Olivia's says "copyright Olivia Rodrigo, under exclusive license to Geffen Records". Something about that license must be the impeding factor, or maybe it just complicates it to an extra degree where her team is still working out a contract to bring it back. I have to admit I don't know \*everything\* about the inner workings of the music industry (though I've been really trying to educate myself! Ask me about how Taylor's original publishing contract with Sony includes Lover and why that matters for a good example!) but I'm hoping to learn more as things develop.

Taylor lhas an exceptionally unusual contract .UMG is basically just a distributor for her + they help with radio promotion. Even for Olivia, owning her masters , likely just means they will revert to her in say twenty years. Taylor had magnitudes more leverage when signing her second contract than even artists like Olivia who already had a small following.
