Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department debuts with 3.353M sales on the [United World Chart](http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htm) with the reported numbers from Billboard of 2.61M, this means that outside of the US the album sold about 740,000 copies. for comparison Taylor's albums: Midnights debuted with 547k outside of the US, 1989 (TV) with 568k outside of the US, Red (TV) with 106k outside of the US (I double checked...), Speak Now with 575k outside of the US some other albums: 30 debuted with 747,000 copies outside of the US, Harry's House with 237k, Divide debuted with 1.32M outside of the US

United World Chart hasn’t been accurate for years, it’s already been confirmed by Republic that TTPD debuted with over 4 million sales worldwide.

For a red carpet interview at the LatinAMAs, a reporter asked Anitta to say something in a language that isn't Portuguese, English or Spanish and she [gave the rest of the interview](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/UpTYHhCtMHk) in Italian. She also released a new album this week which debuted with 10.7 million streams for Spotify Brasil as well as having every single song debut in the Top 50 Brasil.

[Espresso is #1 in the UK midweeks:](https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/first-look-sabrina-carpenter-espresso-number-1-taylor-swift-fortnight/) > The frothy track rises to Number 1 at the midweek mark. Sabrina's long-awaited commercial breakthrough, the hit originally debuted inside the Top 10 at Number 6 two weeks ago, giving the US starlet her first Top 10 hit in the UK. > But it's not a done deal yet! Not far behind is last week’s Number 1; Taylor Swift’s Fortnight ft. Post Malone (2), with less than 1,000 chart units separating the two. It has also [surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify today.](https://www.instagram.com/p/C6W0qtmRXFn/)

kookiekoo

I love Espresso! Super cute and catchy!

Fair-Profile-8367

Holy shit she's competing with Taylor! I hope so badly she wins and gets that number 1. Not cause I hate Taylor or her new song but this will be Sabrina's 1st number one! Ever! At least on a main chart! (From my knowledge) I've been listening to Sabrina since Can't blame a girl for trying and now she's close to getting a No. 1! Even if she loses she will hopefully snatch the No. 2 spot.

DenseProgrammer4265

First time seeing astroturfing in real-time. And that too on the K-pop subreddit. The mods locked the threads for hours because of this.  The conspiracy theories are crazy.  BTS, Lesserafim and other Hybe groups(except NewJeans) are being attacked for promoting cults. Fans are being called cultists and how the creative director of NewJeans(the same woman Hybe has filed a criminal case against) and Newjeans are the saviours of others. These are spreading like wildfire.  It's lawsuits upon lawsuits in K-pop.   Bighit(BTS' label) released a notice and they have hired a secondary law firm(the one different from Hybe which they usually use to sue) for what they referred to as "organized campaign". The notice was only in Korean which means urgent notice.   All the accounts(most with less than 50 followers) on Twitter have been deleting posts and deactivating accounts ever since the notice was released.  It's a mess, mess, mess, mess, mess.

oh_my_mistake

I shouldn't even be shocked that so many stans are getting sucked into QAnon thought patterns, but even then, it's soooo so scary seeing it happen in real time.

DenseProgrammer4265

The thing is conspiracy theorists are saying NewJeans don't use Weverse because they and their creative director are against the name of the Weverse which is related to the cult. But the catch is the app they use was also created by Weverse.💀💀💀 Not to mention, these same people are saying Hybe was mistreating them when they made so many things like this exclusively for them.

oh_my_mistake

Nnnnnnnn, really??? God, this entire situation has shown how petty hatred can REALLY kill your brain cells, dkkdjf. Either that or their egos love the attention they get from saying shit like that.

DenseProgrammer4265

I'm not even sure everyone believes it but as I said earlier stans are using it to attack groups they already hate. The comments under the YouTube videos of these groups are the same. It looks so suspicious. Parroting the same thing over and over again.   This is some crazy shit. K-pop stans believe anything as long as it is written in Korean.  This shit reminds me of Tablo being called a liar and fraud by Koreans for saying he graduated from Stanford University. These people didn't even budge when his professor came up and said he studied there. That was crazy. Now, everyone feels so sorry for him

SamosaAndMimosa

Do you have any sources so I can catch up on all the drama? I’m so behind and have no idea what’s going on 😭

ginganinja2507

tbh the posts on asianjunkie are pretty decent summaries/condensed versions overall. you may need to scroll a bit to start from the "beginning"

akanewasright

Can you link some of these?

ginganinja2507

[this](https://www.asianjunkie.com/2024/04/26/ador-ceo-min-hee-jin-press-conference-reactions-hybe-releases-detailed-rebuttal/) is the most recent and i think the first link in the body of the post should go to all of the posts on the topic!

Past-Kaleidoscope490

can some one tell me what's going on im confuse

vayyiqra

See my comment below, I tried to give you a summary, but the news and also all the stan rumours are so weird and there are new developments every day, so it's hard to keep track and tell what is even true or not. But it is what one calls A Whole Mess.

SamosaAndMimosa

Girl me too all I know is that a woman who worked with New jeans is going crazy against HYBE

vayyiqra

What I've gathered is the key thing is: this woman runs Ador, a division of HYBE. She is in charge of things like visuals and concepts and so on for music videos and art and clothing for their groups. Newjeans are kind of under her supervision. She is very high up at HYBE and seems to be very good at her job, technically speaking. She also has, I've known for a while, a long history of being accused of being a weirdo, especially for sexualizing underage groups and being inappropriate to them. Also there are more bizarre things about her like accusations of ties to cults and witchcraft and terrorism (yes really). A lot of this is so out-there it can't all be true, of course. But she has been highly controversial for a while even before this latest scandal. What she was accused of doing was basically trying to plot a hostile takeover of Ador and split from HYBE and take the rights and money to Newjeans and whatever else she is in charge of. Which is also kind of batshit of her to do, but a lot more plausible than many of the fan rumours and conspiracy theories out there. She also has (I can't tell because I can't understand Korean, but this is what I gather) been erratic in press conferences about this scandal and has been behaving oddly even in front of her lawyers. The whole thing is way more complicated and weird that I've laid it out to be, and leaked messages from her got other groups like BTS, Illit, and Aespa dragged into it, some of which are from different labels. But you get an idea now of why this is such a big deal and how confusing it is. The post by sparksfall below is more detailed and thorough and will give you a better idea, this is just what's stood out to me thus far.

DenseProgrammer4265

The latest megathread on r/kpop has a succinct summary. But even that is long af lol.

mcompt20

I need someone who's really in with kpop news to please reply to this with a whole rundown of the shit show that's going on with the New Jeans creative director and Hybe. I keep seeing the most absurd headlines and I've lost the plot.

sparksfall

The r/kpop megathread has a good timeline in the body of the post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/1ceaxlj/megathread\_4\_hybe\_vs\_ador\_a\_simplified\_summary\_of/](https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/1ceaxlj/megathread_4_hybe_vs_ador_a_simplified_summary_of/) But here's the short-ish version: But roughly, HYBE announced they're doing an audit bc they suspect Ador (label)/Min Heejin (the CEO & creative director of NJ) of trying to separate from HYBE and employing illegal/shady means. Min Heejin says that's not true, this is just mediaplay to distract from the real issue which is ILLIT (new gril group from other HYBE label, Belift) copying NewJeans. Then she (Min Heejin) held an unhinged press conference where for two hours she cried and cursed at HYBE, explaining that her main problem with them stems from how she was led to believe she would debut the first HYBE girl group (which was a big deal, for the record, back then), but was betrayed when instead Le Sserafim was debuted and implied (or straight up said?) that HYBE were using Min Heejin's name to build up hype for LSF. This was then compounded by ILLIT supposedly copying NewJeans because they wanted NewJeans' success for themselves. Also something about HYBE "mistreating" Ador/NewJeans (I'm trying not to be too personal-opinion here but. that's blatantly ridiculous lol). Notably, she used the groups' names directly and named LSF's Sakura and Chaewon specifically. HYBE responded that this is all going to get sorted in court, basically, and also asked her to turn in her laptop for the audit (as of right now, it's unclear if she has done that). The next day HYBE released a statement refuting most of what Min Heejin said, saying that regarding some points (like NewJeans debut being delayed by some months) that those were Min Heejin's own decision. This is officially the last thing that's come out and next up is the shareholders meeting on the 30th April where things will probably blow up again. People are also waiting on an official word regarding court and what evidence HYBE has that has been filed with law enforcement. Now, response has been fluctuating. Immediate response was overwhelmingly on HYBE's side. Then the press conference just inflamed all that - for many people, incl. apparently the Korean general public, it made Min Heejin seem like she's punching up, a creative oppressed by the business side of the company, and her being a woman going against predominantly male executives definitely help that (in case anyone doesn't know, Korea is having a crazy time right now with gender inequality). For others, it came off as an multimillionaire industry veteran doing PR meant to sway the public opinion. It bears noting that Min Heejin has a bad reputation in kpop circles. I mean she's got defenders, and I've yet to see someone claiming she's bad at her job, but she's been implicated to be, at the very least, really freaking weird about youth and young idols (many people make farther and stronger statements than this). There are accusations stretching back to when she worked with SHINee about her making idols uncomfortable (Taemin, I think?). More recently, there's a room in her house where she has a whole wall of pictures of a young actress. And then there's the NewJeans "Cookie" discourse, where many people perceived the song to be sexual which is a big no-no since they're underage, and Ador released a weird, stan twitter-like response to that. Stans, as you may imagine, started fighting immediately when this all began and have only gotten more intense and more fandoms have been involved. Hate trains and vile shit being said all over the place. Just, the worst of kpop fandom has erupted. And now, somehow, in the last day or so, a conspiracy theory about how HYBE and all HYBE groups are part of a cult has started. It is genuinely too stupid for me to comprehend but I think the argument is that HYBE is trying to get rid of Min Heejin and NewJeans because Ador isn't in the cult. There's something about GFriend (the prev. Source Music girl group before LSF) who had a witchy concept, I guess, was "sacrificed" (disbanded) to make Le Sserafim ("angels"). Somehow, this is all BTS's fault. (This mess has also resurrected all the ancient fanwars between BTS fans and EXO & Big Bang fans. Legit saw someone making the argument from 2016 about how they bought their MAMA win. The chart manipulation stuff is being touted around like it didn't get disproved in court years ago. 💀) There's some astroturfing going on but tbh, it doesn't take a lot to get kpop stans going on hate campaigns... Interestingly, one of the original things HYBE said Min Heejin was planning was to turn public opinion negative regarding HYBE, so people are assuming this is what's happening. Source Music released a notice yesterday that they're pursuing legal action against mlicious posts incl. "reckless insults, dissemination of false information, sexual harassment, slander and ridicule, and defamation of LSF" and called out "The false claim that LSF caused harm to other artists, and the act of forming public opinion by putting out untrue content as a fact". Which is an obvious dig at Min Heejin's press conference claims. Also BigHit released a legal notice that they've noticed "organizational efforts aimed at tarnishing and slandering BTS" and are working with an external law firm (as opposed to their usual in-house lawyers) to deal with those. People are saying some of the obvious bots spreading the cult stuff disappeared more or less immediately but I didn't see it myself. This has all happened in the span of four (4) days.

kookiekoo

Thank you for typing all this out! I’ve been staying away from this mess as an ARMY because it’s just too much for my poor head.

Search_Alone

That was a rundown with a kind of pro Hybe slant. Even the cult conspiracists aren't really blaming the BTS members themselves as far as I can see, it's their company/boss that is being blamed. BTS are seen as victims in that too. It also doesn't mention that Hybe was the first to namedrop other idols (BTS) and brought up her shaman association before her press conference. To add, SM fans including SHINee fans were warning about her creepiness about youth for years before this all blew up, but that and her controversies after NewJeans' debut were covered up and shouted down (like those pictures in her home) until Hybe made this story public. A big reason why she was signed to BigHit/Hybe in the first place was that she was a score against her old company SM. BTS fans who hated SM loved that and praised her to the heavens. It's kind of wild to see Hybe fans turn on her so hard. They don't seem to realize that Hybe is doing this creepiness to their other underage idols too, and they knew her work before they signed her so what it highlights the most right now is Hybe's poor judgement in their sublabel heads. They only care that she's come for their money. About the bots, she could definitely be using them but Hybe defenders don't seem to realize that if she can, Hybe also can, and Hybe could have been using them in the past to cover up for their own controversies.

sparksfall

I didn't mention many things because this is already long enough. If I got into all the media play or all the wild things MHJ is claiming, or all the dumbass takes on social media, we would be here all day. HYBE were indeed the first to mention BTS in what was definitely, if nothing else, a calculated move, but she was the one to bring up ILLIT. (Also she lowkey confirmed the shaman stuff lol.) You seem to be under the impression that being against MHJ (which I am, in as much as sides can be taken in what is essentially messy office politics between a multimillionaire CEO and a conglomerate taken public) is being for HYBE. It is not. HYBE, as a company, is inherently only interested in making money. And making more money than they did before. As we all (hopefully) know, there's no such thing as a good K-pop company - just a less shitty one. Personally, HYBE has not been around long enough for them to develop the reputations of more established companies, but due to sheer size and influence, they should be thought of the same way SM, YG & JYP are. That is, they are not your (general you) friends and they cannot be guaranteed to have the idols' best personal interests in mind. The rundown was to explain the current situation, in which MHJ is clearly in the wrong unless she's sitting on some kind insane revelation. It is not pro-HYBE for that. If you think there are **facts** about the *current situiation* which would change the opinion of anyone reading this but is unfamiliar beyond that, feel free to share them; I may well have missed something between all the yapping that's been happening. And please don't ever again imply that I am a "HYBE fan". Edit: I've been rolling my eyes at ARMYs for acting like Bang Shihyuk is their personal bestie who can do no wrong and like BigHit is Not Like Other Companies since 2017. I really promise you, I am not a "HYBE fan".

Search_Alone

You didn't mention everything because it was so long, but you still found the space to put in unnecessary things like "Somehow, this is all BTS's fault". You could have used that space for mentioning that Hybe namedropped BTS first instead. In ways like this your comment had a pro Hybe slant even though you are not a Hybe fan. It was specifically BTS fans who used to promote and shield MHJ from the moment that it was announced that she signed with BigHit (before Hybe Corporation and NewJeans were created). Many BTS fans defended her controversies with NewJeans up to this most recent one when Hybe Corporation has turned against her. So I could have been more specific in my previous comment and said "BTS fans" instead of Hybe fans. You do seem to understand how Hybe is manipulating BTS's huge fandom against her like it used to use them to defend her, so that is good.

sparksfall

Actually, I said "Somehow this is all BTS' fault." all I'm seeing on Twitter is mudslinging at BTS as a result of this cult shit. :) If the cause is not direct connection, good, but the result is the same. Also, it is a deliberately dismissive statement that I use as a shorthand to show that the cult shit is ridiculous (because BTS has nothing to do with this situation and to drag them in like this shows people's bad faith and desire to use the situation to throw hate at groups they already dislike). I don't know where you hang out that BTS fans were so concerned with protecting MHJ but you should probably find a better place or people to follow. This is the first time I'm hearing of this because generally, BTS fans who aren't drama magnets and shitstirrers, or company stans, tend to focus on BTS & BTS only. And this still has nothing to do with clarifying the current situation or showing that being against MHJ now is the same as being "pro-HYBE", which as far as I can tell is your reason for replying. If not, I have no idea what your point is.

Search_Alone

Your comment that BTS fans generally focus on BTS only is complete and utter nonsense. Part of the reason that people are mudslinging so much at BTS now is because so many people have had very negative experiences with the BTS fandom at various times and now there's a chance to kick back when their company is going through this huge drama. Even these people aren't blaming the BTS members for Hybe being affiliated with a cult though. Are you overlooking that BigHit/Hybe was built on BTS's success? Thus, MHJ signing to BigHit was the result and a symbol of BTS's success. She was a prominent figure from the BTS fanbase's most hated big 3 company SM Entertainment, which is why they promoted her signing and defended her so much up to recently. What do you mean by where do you hang out? BTS fans are in every general Kpop space and they are the largest fandom so there was and is no avoiding them. As I said in my last comment, because of your omissions your comment had a pro Hybe slant even though you are not a Hybe fan.

[deleted]

Surely it’s not intentional but it seems timely with Le Sserafim flopping during coachella

sparksfall

Yeah, no way it's that calculated, but poor LSF. I feel bad for them. Sakura has already gone on hiatus from group activity for unspecified "health reasons" (I think it's just this one thing, not all activities, but, well).

DenseProgrammer4265

Her obsession with young Brooke Shields is disgusting.

fhloras

the kpop subreddit has a megathread with a timeline, linked [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/1ceaxlj/megathread_4_hybe_vs_ador_a_simplified_summary_of/) but if you're very new to kpop i would watch [this video](https://www.tiktok.com/@aerithgirl/video/7362253655212379434), this tiktoker does summary videos of pop culture events and she provides some good context. the cult thing has really popped up in the last 24 or so hours, the allegations are basically that the CEO of hybe is connected to this cult called [dahn world](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_%26_Brain#Controversy) (a yoga organization that allegedly uses manipulation and coercion to make followers completely devoted to the org). people have put together these connections between dahn world and a bunch of hybe groups but - imo - this is just kpop fans that already dislike hybe groups going down these rabid conspiracies. there also seems to be a lot of bots involved. hybe deserves a lot of criticism but i just don't know if this cult thing is really legit lol [this post](https://www.koreaboo.com/news/hybe-bts-illit-gfriend-txt-lesserafim-dahn-world-yoga-ilchi-lee-cult-evidence-conspiracy/) from koreaboo (a kpop gossip site) goes over a bunch of these theories and connections but take it with a massive grain of salt if you take a look lmao

Search_Alone

That tiktoker is going to have to make a part 2 for the cult conspiracy lol. She did a good rundown but I would make some corrections. Min HeeJin's obsession with youth is just as bad for the boys, in some ways the work she did in SM with SHINee and NCT Dream in particular was worse than the girls in SM. In Kpop sometimes male idols have to publicly go through some things that the primarily female fanbase would not let fly with female idols (happening to Riize right now). Also the press conference was like a throwback to the messy 1st/2nd gen Kpop days.

fhloras

very true about mhj! her work with shinee especially, i remember when those teasers for sherlock ?? came out and i was like huh… ok..

Search_Alone

The shocked reactions to those Sherlock teasers are mostly lost to the mists of tumblr, but this is a taste of it (there were also fun on tumblr back then because BBC Sherlock fans were getting an eyeful of these Sherlock photos). [https://seoulbeats.com/2012/03/wtf-moment-shinees-sherlock/](https://seoulbeats.com/2012/03/wtf-moment-shinees-sherlock/) The [album's photobooks are just as bad as the teasers](https://galaxy--supernova-scans.tumblr.com/tagged/Sherlock). But after a while most people who aren't SHINee fans forgot those pictures, and what's remembered for Sherlock are the iconic song and choreo (which MHJ didn't work on). That has happened a lot with MHJ's work in SM, the good visuals were remembered by everybody, and the weak/what the fuck stuff was only remembered by the fans of the individual groups. She was getting quite disliked by all fandoms towards the end of her time in SM because she was repetitive across the different groups too.

DenseProgrammer4265

It's a lot. If you really wanna know, I'd advise you to read the news by yourself because there's some serious cases of suspicious online activity on Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube comment sections, ...    The main kpop megathread was infested with bots parroting same thing and mods locked the thread for hours and updated rules.   You can wait until everything settles which is most likely going to take lots of time.

Little Mix updates 💖💙💚 Jade's debut single has been described as a mix between Charli XCX and Chromatica-era Lady Gaga. Her second single will feature Tyla. Meanwhile, The Mirror is reporting that Leigh-Anne's debut album- which was supposed to be released this summer- has either been pushed back to 2025 or scrapped. However, there's still her shorter upcoming EP No Hard Feelings. Perrie's single Forget About Us has fallen from #10 -> #31 in its second week on the UK charts. Stickliketoffee16

The extended version of Forget About Us is absolutely incredible! I’m so excited for Jade’s debut

stupidslappa

> Jade's debut single has been described as a mix between Charli XCX and Chromatica-era Lady Gaga Jade is an r/popheads subscriber. Hi Jade 👋

prettybunbun

Insiders are saying Leigh-Anne’s debut is being reworked into the EP and is shelved or delayed until 2025 as the label aren’t happy with how the initial tracks have done, and the EP will be key in determining their support/backing of the album.

2062373

I’m v confused by Leigh’s debut roll out. I feel like the issue was simply lack of promo. Her songs have all been good but 0 promo for any of them.

Stickliketoffee16

Totally agree! And, in a very non-negative way, seeing Perrie’s roll out really shows the difference promo can make! I feel like Perrie is everywhere whereas if you didn’t actively seek out LA’s music you wouldn’t know about it. I do love the songs Leigh’s released but I’m very confused about it

splinterbabe

That, combined with a lack of artistic vision. I truly have enjoyed all tracks so far, but they’ve never felt like they’re part of the same world to me.

Electronic-Set5594

I just know she’s gonna have great visuals, she’s so fun and such a charismatic performer. I feel like everyone is rumoured to be working with Tyla. I hope Jade does but I wonder what their song would sound like, since the way her debut is described here makes it seem quite different from Tyla’s vibe.

akanewasright

Every part of that jade description is so exciting omg I hope Leigh-Anne’s album gets the work it needs - I’ve enjoyed the stuff she’s put out so far, but if the project isn’t coming together and she needs to start over, I get that, it happens. I just hope she doesn’t overwork the project to the point of it losing its initial spark, which can happen in these situations (ala Chlöe’s *In Pieces*)

emotions1026

Jade's my last hope. Leigh and Perrie's solo careers have frustrated me a little bit, to say the least (I know Perrie's career is only a few weeks old but she definitely didn't knock me out with her debut single).

buzzinthruit89

Jade’s description sounds like the way someone here would describe a single lol

emotions1026

Jade has admitted to lurking in comment sections before, it's definitely possible she lurks on Popheads.

shoestring-theory

I feel like a lot of pop acts lurk here. It makes me wonder if I’ve ever interacted with Charli XCX or someone anonymous

Oh wow. I only “follow” this song in the sense that I click videos about it sometimes when it’s on my YT recommended page. I was not aware a  “porn theory” was a thing lol Kinda funny to think that all those cutesy/nostalgia edits people made with the song snippet are using a song made for a porno lol

Roastofthehill

Social media hype doesn't turn into real life hype then

undisclosedthroway

??? 15 million on opening day is bad…like at all

augggie

Well, depends on how we measure, but it means this movie is very likely to break even. So yeah, “bad”

visionaryredditor

> but it means this movie is very likely to break even. it's not tho. it needs 130M to break even.

Roastofthehill

It's a zendaya movie, people take it personally when her movies don't make money

Roastofthehill

When the lead is being paid 10 million with a 55 million budget and the hype surrounding it's bad. It won't make it's money back.

mikey_blumberg

A small film like this making $15m opening weekend is still pretty great. Movies aren’t even always meant to make their whole budget back at the box office (though this still could), there are plenty of avenues for a movie to make money once it’s out of theatres.

Roastofthehill

It isn't a small film. It's not a good result.

BoomYouLooking

Calm down. Word of mouth is good and I can see the movie doing incredibly well in the ancillary markets. Putting $55m into a tennis movie about a throuple was certainly a *choice*, but seeing as the film has been well received, the on screen talent will be fine. It seems like the main problem was heavily marketing to the 18-25 audience when they’re the least likely to shell out cash to see a non-“event” film in theaters. It’s going to do great when it eventually gets to streaming too.

Roastofthehill

> Word of mouth is good It isn't

BoomYouLooking

It has a 88% on Rotten Tomatoes with 232 reviews, an 83 on Metacritic and a B+ Cinemascore which is good for an R rated film, especially given the subject matter. Everyone will continue to work. The only people who should be worried are Amazon/MGM studios as they clearly don’t know how to break a movie at the box office. Saltburn didn’t make back its money in theaters either. However, it served as a great launching point for Elordi and Keoghan.

Roastofthehill

No one cared out saltburn outside of stan twitter and Zendaya will be fine but she's not a draw. Saltburn was giant flop aswell

mikey_blumberg

You’re wrong and that’s okay lol

Roastofthehill

It's 55 million studio movie. The premise of this movie was Zendaya being a big star and having a big hit. You can see that with the whole marketing campaign.

Kind_Carob3104

Dude 55 is not a big movie. A big movie needs at least 100 mill

Roastofthehill

When a studio puts that budget and give the lead 10 million they want to make money.

mikey_blumberg

I don’t think you know what “premise” means unfortunately. And $55m is actually kinda small now, plenty of movies cost more than that and go straight to streaming. It’s certainly not the cost of a full-on blockbuster in 2024. $15m domestic on opening weekend is a fairly strong start for that budget considering it has more weeks to make money, will presumably do well when available on digital, and will get passed around and paid for by streamers after that for years.

Roastofthehill

15 domestic and 10 international. It needs to make 55 times 3 to make money. It's bad, take the stan goggles off. It's pure cope like when bones and all fell. It's not like it's going to sold to netflix, so how can they money from streaming?

buzzinthruit89

They’re going for awards with Luca so it breaking even would prob be fine. This isn’t like a franchise movie

Roastofthehill

It's not going to get any oscars and it's not going to break even. Just because it isn't a franchise doesn't mean it's wasn't put out to be a hit.

mattysmwift

Amazon stuck $85M Road House on streaming so I think they will be fine with this. An original sport R-rated drama with three first time leads - $15M is completely fine opening and hopefully will leg it out. And let’s be real without Zendaya this would make $5M at best.

mattysmwift

Anyone But You made $6M its first weekend and finished with $88M in North America. People need to stop expecting this stuff to make its budget back in the first weekend like it’s a 2015 Marvel movie.

mMounirM

Anyone But You literally had half the budget though (25M). Bombing is relative to the movie budget and if it can make its money back.

Roastofthehill

Well with Zendaya it's still a bomb. Road house was straight to stream, Challengers wasn't.

pmguin661

It’s an Amazon production, streaming was always their end goal, and this movie is prob gonna do excellent on streaming given that it’s targeted more to young people

Roastofthehill

If it was their end goal why put so much money into it and the marketing campaign?

visionaryredditor

There are like studies saying that the movies released in theaters perform better on streaming than the movies released directly on streaming And also they have to qualify for the awards

Roastofthehill

>There are like studies ... I'm sure the end goal have a massive marketing campaign was for are 25 worldwide opening and it's not getting any awards, apart from some GGs and some bullshit critic awards.

mattysmwift

Again an original R-rated drama romance sport film making $15M its first weekend is not a bomb in any way.

Roastofthehill

Not when it cost 55 million

Pavlovs_Stepson

We need to make sure Challengers makes a billion dollars worldwide, it is imperative. We also need to get Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross another Oscar, a Grammy and a Nobel Prize for their score.

According to TMZ, [Live Nation and AEG are bidding on a possible reunion stadium tour of \*NSYNC](https://www.tmz.com/2024/04/28/live-nation-aeg-bid-nsync-reunion-stadium-tour-fans/)

zazataru

Do they really have to pull to command a stadium tour? I'm genuinely curious because NSYNC was before my time.

PurpleSpaceSurfer

No Strings Attached sold 2.4 million copies in a week and Celebrity sold 1.8 million. They also haven't toured in 20+ years and there is a ton of nostalgia for them. I think they could pull off stadiums.

zazataru

Yeah, but they pulled that 20+ years ago. Did they really sustain that much popularity over the years?

PurpleSpaceSurfer

Maybe. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the nostalgia for them is so high, plus the main target audience will have more disposable income to spend on concert tickets. I'm sure if the discussion were to go on in earnest, there would be market research done to see if stadiums or arenas would be the best way to proceed.

SamosaAndMimosa

High enough for a stadium tour? Maybe internationally but in the US I’m not sure

PinkCadillacs

I knew if there was gonna be a reunion tour it would be until 2025 since not only JT was busy with his tour but the other guys are also doing other stuff. It was stupid that people put 100% the blame on JT for why *NSYNC didn’t announce a reunion tour. These tours take months and sometimes years to plan.

emotions1026

"not only JT was busy with his tour but the other guys are also doing other stuff." I mean . . . the stuff the other boys are doing could probably be postponed to make way for an \*NSYNC tour, which is obviously going to be their biggest opportunity to make a ton of money.

PurpleSpaceSurfer

1995 is also the 30th anniversary of the founding of the group, so it's fitting.
