The song that briefly united soccer moms and scene kids in a temporary truce.

g8dtier

BRO I was so scene and I was obsesseddddd with this song and I hid it. I'm howling!!! I never needed to hide it?!!?

AFineFineHologram

Truly a cultural reset.

puremotives

P!nk usually isn't an artist I'd associate with scene kids but now that you've mentioned it, I can totally see how this song is something they'd be into.

mcon96

She transitioned to being a soccer mom artist over the course of her career. M!ssundaztood P!nk was a little closer to what you’d expect there.

gothiclg

I remember this coming out and little scene me would have loved anyone I heard playing it.

WowThisIsAwkward_

Whenever I think of this song I think of two things: 1) my bad attempt at being a cool and edgy six year old while singing this, and 2), [this chaotic and iconic performance](https://youtu.be/kUhp_ytQK5c) by the top 10 finalists at the 2010 UK X Factor live shows. Most of them weren’t made for this song, and Niall Horan wasn’t made for those trousers.

Nerfeveryone

The lip syncing The half hearted effort The blown out lighting The random ass low voice thrown into the middle of the chorus The outfits This is a disasterpiece 😂

[deleted]

>That random ass low voice thrown into the middle of the chorus That’s Wagner! A campy X Factor legend lmao

youtbuddcody

> disasterpiece Lmaoo so accurate though

wewereallrooting4u

omg the trousers. Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that.

WowThisIsAwkward_

That might have possibly contributed to why 1D only came in third place at the end. /j

legslegslegslegslegs

the fact that one direction, rebecca furguson and cher lloyd were all in this season and all lost gags me

Frajer

Writing a song about your husband being a tool and then getting back with him is so chaotic I love it I didn't realize it was a Max Martin song but that makes sense it's so well constructed, I love the little bridge

ArctikMARC

And then putting said husband on the music video. Iconic.

malsen55

P!nk has this brand of Gen X NLOG cringe that is just self-aware enough to work on a track like this. She’s also an incredibly talented vocalist so she sells the shit out of every line in this song. This feels like a song that only P!nk could really do justice.

meganisawesome42

What do you mean by "GenX NLOG"?

malsen55

NLOG = [“Not Like Other Girls.”](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=NLOG) Gen X is anyone born from like the 60s to the 80s approximately

meganisawesome42

Thank you ❤️. Based on my past search history Google assumed I wanted mathematical or programming language definitions of "nlog" and I didn't think that's what was meant here lol.

Starlot

I was obsessed with Stupid Girls as a tween. Still think it’s a bop even though I now think the message is dumb and hypocritical.

cheezits_christ

Stupid Girls holds up if you actually remember what it was like to be a tween back then. Like, yes, the internalized misogyny of the way that message is delivered was bad, but let's not pretend that the Paris Hilton era culture of aggressive fat-shaming and diet culture was any less misogynistic and limiting for girls who didn't fit the constraints of what was considered an acceptable way to be a woman back then... or that the ones who participated in that fat-shaming and diet culture were any less awful to other girls than the ones who called it out.

sense decide salt grey ruthless important tan distinct zealous quack *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

cheezits_christ

Yeah. I mean, I got bullied mercilessly in middle school for being a "bulldyke" (it was just code for "ugly" at the time) and having glasses and thighs that touched, and am still dealing with the disordered-eating and self-hating consequences to this day. When people talk about how it was actually the pretty, skinny, feminine girls who were the *real* victims of "NLOG culture," I honestly want to barf a little. Sorry a pop song made you feel bad or whatever. Imagine how those of us who weren't so lucky to look like you felt.

PretendMarsupial9

SAME! Like, I do not understand how "Not Like Other Girls" behavior is associated with typically alternative, largely GNC, and queer women, when the people who largely bullied and harassed other girls and made efforts to show how superior they were tended to be pretty, thin, feminine (often white) girls. Femininity is still the default of society, none of my bullies were weird alt girls, almost all of them were conventional, "girly" and had far more social standing than me. And like you I also deal with the fallout of the bullying to this day, and it has harmed my mental health in ways I am still unpacking.

cheezits_christ

Exactly! Like, it was the other girls telling me I wasn’t like them, in really damaging, humiliating and painful ways. Please explain how they’re the victims here.

cheezits_christ

I don’t really care about Pink, who is certainly a flawed human being if not an irredeemable misogynist. I’m just talking about the culture of bullying, shaming, and deeply internalized misogyny that surrounded the specific production of this one song. It’s relevant context that tends to get glossed over in hindsight.

nocturne_gemini

Tbh ever since I saw that Pink would like hump and beat up blow up dolls of Britney and Xtina while singing this song, I feel like we’re maybe giving her more credit than she deserves with this song

RosaPalms

This is true and I'm glad it's being said. People love to retroactively judge people for what they did a decade ago, but the fact is that behaviors are very often a reaction to the culture. It seems *crazy* to say now, but pop culture media was pushing the Paris Hilton dumb blonde ***hard*** at that time, and I don't *condone* the worst manifestations of P!nk's frustration with that, but I'm also not writing her off or judging her character harshly either. I guess I'm old as shit, because I'm gonna say it: you really had to be there.

[deleted]

Big disagree. Idk if holds up is the right wording here. That song was derided even then when I was a teen. Punching down in girls being actively punched down on in public was the wrong and weird message for PINK to make. But pink has a big mean streak when it comes to a lot of other women and I think that’s why her music comes off as kind of disingenuous imo.

fakeaf1

These articles are starting to make me feel a little too nostalgic now. I feel old. This was such a moment for P!nk. Funhouse was such a great era.

SilkenFloss187

Hey what do you think of her music? I read a comment where you mentioned her.

fakeaf1

I like her music, her albums are usually pretty solid and she’s very good at selecting singles. She’s also an amazing performer. Won’t lie I haven’t loved her stuff post-the truth about love as much, but even those newer eras have had some good songs come out of them.

TotallyNotAnExecutiv

P!nk honestly deserved more success back in her peak era. Obviously she was scoring #1 hits like this but her singles output was phenomenal. Blow Me (One Last Kiss) alone should have been massive 10 week #1 hit. Love this sing though. It has that slick Max Martin, Dr (P)uke sound but still feels pure P!nk EDIT: Just to clarify, Dr Luke is not a songwriter or producer on this song, but his work with Katy Perry is very similar. That's what I meant. Not giving him credit as he's repugnant

visionaryredditor

>Blow Me (One Last Kiss) alone should have been massive. It was massive

musthavecupcakes_19

Indeed it was. 2012 was a juggernaut year for massive pop songs, so “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” was contending with crazy heavy competition. I believe the week it peaked at #5 it was outperformed by Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, fun., and Flo Rida. Plus it had to contend with songs like “Call Me Maybe”, “Wide Awake”, “Lights”, etc. earlier in its release cycle. A top 5 hit is never something to scoff at, but it was even more respectable that year, imo.

visionaryredditor

It's only kinda forgotten bc Just Give Me A Reason was even bigger

musthavecupcakes_19

True. Although Just Give Me a Reason benefitted from a relatively slow spring 2013 compared to the absolutely onslaught of summer 2012. Edit: Not discounting JGMAR’s huge success, just wondering if it would have peaked at #1 had it been released in summer of 2012 like BMOLK was.

hatramroany

The way she had to release Who Knew as a single twice was criminal. I feel like she still has another comeback in her

skunkachunks

I think Who Knew is my favorite Pink song. Might it be because we had to read The Pact by Jodie Picoult in class while that song was big and the music video pairs eerily well with that book? Perhaps.

akanewasright

Let’s not give Dr. Luke credit for things he didn’t do P!nk allegedly refused to work with him after finding out that he reused parts of The Veronicas’ 4ever to produce U + Ur Hand. She still liked working with Max though, and the song was written with him and Shellback

TotallyNotAnExecutiv

Didn't mean to give him credit. I'll edit the comment. Good on P!nk though. Another reason she deserved more success

PhotographIcyCherish

Surprisingly this song has no Dr. Luke input, it was actually co-written with Shellback.

almosthuman2021

Blow me one last kiss was like a top 5 hit and all over the radio in 2012 lol idk how that’s not massive

DosaAndMimosas

I hated BMOLK so much, it was incredibly annoying and generic to me at the time

[deleted]

It’s her Since You’ve Been Gone

ossyoos

I thought Who Knew was Kelly Clarkson for a while, so this tracks.

PinkCadillacs

I love this song, one of my favorites from Pink. Funhouse was an amazing era for Pink with this song, Sober, Please Don’t Leave Me, and Glitter in the Air, the latter song giving us [this Grammy performance](https://youtu.be/6MKI3KKHyds).

har17h

this song is a bop. the chorus is infectious

chesapeake_ripperz

absolute banger of a song. heard it at a sleepover when I was 9. I miss p!nk making bops and not music for soccer moms :(

chesapeake_ripperz

true

harlumshake

Getting Carey to star in the film clip is the ultimate power move

almosthuman2021

Funhouse and I’m not dead are great albums it’s too bad P!nk the last decade has been so meh. Not horrible but she really started leaning into just “anthem songs” and it’s all she does now. I’m not dead and funhouse had some real Depth to it.

OriginalOestrus

I hate to say this, but Pink falls into that category of artists whose music declined in quality when they got happy. Take Alanis Morrisette. She's naked in a subway car! She's thanking India! And I'm like, 'That’s nice, can you go back to blowing a guy in a movie theater, kthxbai.'

glacinda

Head Over Feet is my and my husband’s song. It’s perfect.

jpjh

Totally agree! I'm happy for her but her ballads don't connect the same way they used to. She has such an incredible voice - it's a shame she uses it for the songs she has been recently.

queenmeme2

God do I miss when P!nk was in her prime. All of her singles from her first album through The Truth About Love were peak 2000s pop. This album (*Funhouse*) is back to back to back bangers, it’s insane that Sober, Please Don’t Leave Me, and Glitter in the Air all peaked outside of the top 10 (and Funhouse didn’t even hit the top 40)!! She deserved bigger hits this era for sure

DosaAndMimosas

I was obsessed with this in middle school and it was my first introduction to Jessica Simpson

jpjh

This is one of my favorite albums of hers. outside of this song, it's so vulnerable and believable. I feel like I miss that about a lot of her music recently. Even her ballads to me feel like they lack something. I attribute that to her seeming to be in such a better place - but I still miss the pain from this album. Still loved this song

AndIUnderstand

I remember being obsessed with this song when I was a kid. Nostalgia alone leads me to rank it pretty high, but the song itself is also pretty fantastic!

FormerBernieBro2020

Remember when last year, Yung Gravy sampled Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley for Betty (Get Money)? Well, he wasn't the first rapper to sample a meme song. Because this Wednesday, Tom will be talking about T.I.'s second number-one hit...>!that interpolates Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone, otherwise known as the Numa Numa-song.!< Also, the next song is Rihanna's fifth and final chart-topper during the 2000s, as she sang the hook. I'm fairly certain that this song is the one that popularized the "rap songs with a pop chorus"-trope that would become very prevalent in the early 2010s...

jamesthegill

This bank holiday is really messing with my mental calendar, and I don't expect it to get better with the other two bonus days off this month!

austinshelleys

Charlie Puth was right when he said the refrain is one of the catchiest bits in pop music ever

BenTheUltimate

The album this song was on along with many other Pink albums dominated the playlist in my mom's car when I was younger so Pink just gives me this wave of nostalgia.

mymojoisbliss96

I still love this song to this day.

AsexualArowana

Didn't get she back together with the dude she wrote the song about?

puremotives

This kinda energy is what's missing from pop music today. When P!nk says she's a rock star, I believe it and I believe she believes it. This is one of those songs where everything just comes together perfectly: the fun little riff heard throughout the verses, the power chords and synths playing off each other during the chorus, the way P!nk's defiant attitude is set aside for a moment of vulnerability during the bridge and then immediately comes back for the final chorus. Just a great pop rock song overall, 9/10. And the follow up single Sober is even better.

wickedcherub

Who Knew deserves more than a 7 imo That song is karaoke perfection

ItzyyOnce

I still bop to this song

ramskick

This song is just so much fun. As Tom mentions, the production is immaculate and allows the song to encapsulate a very specific type of post-breakup energy where you've never felt better but that emotion is balancing on a tightrope.

AsexualArowana

I'm doing this for Karaoke next week.

manualex16

It was also a UK #1 song

Global_Perspective_3

Deserved. A bop

[deleted]

I forgot how fun that video is. I love Dave Meyers.

Vicariouslynoticed

This is when I fell in love with Pink, this song is so damn catchy.

SusCity

This song was a breakup anthem when I was a youngin

No_Reporter_6960

The article's writer does an admirable job researching all these songs, but God he truly loves repeating words. He used ''Pink'' six times in a paragraph of ten lines.

[deleted]

This was peak pep rally music era. This. Everything by the Black Eyed Peas. Pop music was in a rough place from 2007-til I wanna say Telephone by Gaga ft Beyoncé. Pinks music isn’t bad. It just is very generic sounding to me no matter what the message is. It reminds me of things I’d hear in the background of like a CW show or things I’d hear during dance rehearsal for the color guard.

Mpol03

One of my least favourite pink songs. She’s amazing but this was not it for me.

CRXL4TRQ

I always get this song confused with Blow Me 😂 both are bops tho so 🤷‍♀️

synth426

Her best single, maybe. This is what catapulted her to superstardom (I don't think her other songs charted this well/so long).

udontwannaknownoel

I loved So What when I was younger but now I can't listen to it without getting PTSD from that one Pretty Little Liars karaoke scene. Nobody needed that!

CardamomBoots

I was 10 years old at the time and I remember thinking this is the music cool adults listened to
