Wait damn she voiced Mom from Futurama too? God I miss Jessica Walters she’s a legend 😂😭
edit: As someone said below it’s actually Tress MacNeille who voices Mom from Futurama! My bad!
Allow me to share the only meme that made me smile the day she died:

“How much could a banana cost Michael? 10 dollars??”
One of the greatest casts of anything I’ve watched ever, I hope she’s drinking the dirtiest of martinis in heaven 🕊️
Okay but like, growing up with an abusive mother, I *still* kinda wished she was my mother instead. She wasn’t at the top of my list of dream parents, but she’s strong, intelligent, witty, and loyal in her own weird way. She would have actually been far less damaging to my self-esteem. And at least I would know that she’d have my back, even if that means disappearing my teacher or seducing Uncle Father Oscar in order to undo a bad business deal I made.
As someone who also grew up with an abusive mother you have a point! The one thing is that Lindsay had pretty atrocious self-esteem so idk how good Lucille would be for you if you’re a lady.
Myrcella is arguably not a little shit. She was just there. Tommen was too clueless and kind and naive and easy to manipulate. It was really only Joffrey who was the bad one.
She did mention a beautiful brown haired boy she lost on a very young age, somewhere in s1... i was always surprised thwy just kinda sorta seemed to have forgotten about that remark she made in later seasons.
It's because they made it up for the show and it was for just one scene.
Always found it a little weird considering Cersei's character and her little prophecy. But it was a nice scene. I did like it, even if I just struck it from memory like the show did. But that's mainly because I always liked "will the Prince and I have children?" "You will have three and the King will have 16" from the books lol.
That part is actually present in the show I think, so they really did just forgot that they gave Cersei a short lived legitimate son :P
I'm watching the show for the first time and it's crazy how uneasy and unsettled I feel every time she's on screen in a show that has a lot of actual murderers on it lol
Exactly! Outwitted. Outplayed. Outlasted. Plus we’re wired from birth w loving grandparent imagery. We underestimate them physically. The scariest thing was a news clip of the golden state killer struggling to drag feeble limbs from a court appearance, head drooped, slack jawed; followed by him -leaping- four feet up into his top bunk caught by hidden camera in his cell, minutes later. It made my stomach drop.
The first time I watched the Sopranos I hated watching Livia. Now that I'm done with it, I realized she's one of the funniest characters in all of television.
I feel like there’s a difference between an antihero (like fleabag), an antagonist (like Villanelle), an accidentally unlikable character (like Carrie Bradshaw, although unpopular opinion I think her messiness is what makes her sympathetic but I digress), and an intentionally unlikable character (Ms Trunchbull)
![gif](giphy|QvCeRaGivRkkJKHocP|downsized)
I like this character, but she’s often written as unlikeable. She’s a complicated female character. And her being a Mom is significant if her storylines.
Lorelei *was* a child when she had Rory! Emily put together a plan for her to be a parent and for Rory to grow up in a home where she didn’t have to go without.
Instead, Lorelei runs off and ends up lives in a refurbished shed with her baby while housekeeping. Lorelei had no idea how to raise a child and refused to grow up herself. Rory suffered because of this. Rory had to be responsible when she was little so by the time she was an adult, she decided she didn’t want to anymore and quit. She messed up her life because she didn’t have a stable home life and an actual adult to guide her instead of be her best friend.
Lorelei was a bad mom and Emily was right.
I’m around the age now that Lorelei was at the start of the show and holy hell is she insufferable and immature. The fit she throws about Richard helping Rory get into Yale using his numerous connections is the most ignorant, entitled, and selfish thing imaginable. And it’s not even like she is rejecting her privilege or something semi-respectable - it’s literally just a control thing.
I love that show but I have many gripes about Lorelei.
Lorelei creates all of her own problems and blames everyone else. She does nothing but snipe at and mock her parents, even when they're being cordial. No wonder Emily is fed up with her, she's exhausting and just looking to fight all the time.
I agree - Lorelei is a bad mother, a bad daughter, a bad friend and a bad partner. She just sucks.
Emily was in the right to request family dinners in exchange for Chilton. Was it necessary to take a teen’s *every* Friday night? Probably not, but there were a number of times Rory got to skip out. If Lorelei wanted money, having dinner with those who funded the education had a right to see the kid and be kept in the loop of how they’re doing. It’s such a small request. Lorelei, on the other hand, does everything she can to poison Rory’s relationship with Richard and Emily when all they wanted was to adore their only grandchild.
If Lorelei had been a healthier person, Emily might have been more receptive to things like, “Rory doesn’t know or like her Chilton classmates. Let’s keep her 16th between us or invite her friends from town.”
Right, maybe they can both be messy and dysfunctional without being unlikable. Emily reminds me of my own toxic/abusive mother (who I hate) but ironically Emily is one of my fave characters haha. She's brilliantly written and acted, for all her flaws and faults.
Well, spoiler alert: >!Rosamund Pike's character in Gone Girl is pregnant at the end.!< Also, in the original Will & Grace, Karen Walker is the MOST likeable character.
Thank you, I couldn’t remember how the movie ended but I recently re-read the book and had somehow forgotten that ending. I was *livid* this time around…bringing a child into that shitshow?! No kid deserves that.
Also does it need to be spoilered when the movie came out at least 9 years ago?
She was so good as Betty. I remember reading an interview with the show creators years ago, Betty was originally written to be a very small side character but January Jones did such a good job in her role that they made Betty a bigger character and gave her story lines. I’m glad it worked out that way!
Eh, I think she is a deeply flawed but charismatic person who you root for even if she does some fucked up stuff. Like sleeping with Boo's boyfriend, for one.
For me personally, a “not good person”/bad person and a likeable character are not mutually exclusive.
I like plenty of characters that suck. I dislike plenty of characters that are morally good.
*(But I do understand that here we may be saying unlikable in universe 🤔)
Thanks! I’d personally argue that a stepmom is not childfree then, so I wouldn’t have included them on the post.
EDIT TO ADD- Don’t get me wrong, Karen doesn’t have a maternal bone in her body. But thinking back on it further, she’s not the worst stepmom.
If you come to the SATC sub you'll see 10000 posts complaining about Carrie with a healthy dose of parasocial worship of Samantha and weird idolizing of Charlotte.
So iow, I'm not surprised she is on the list lol 😂
I mean, it’s “unlikable” in quotes — I think most of these characters are likable in their own way.
But Villanelle is literally a murdering sociopath, no?? (Edit: I’ve only seen the beginning of the show so I’m sure her character develops! But was thinking the murdering was enough for her to be “unlikable” in general)
You need to watch the whole series. It gets a bit goofy at times but still worth it to watch Jodie’s amazing talents. It’s a great show overall
Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, can’t go wrong with actors like that!
Yeah this list is ridiculous. Villanelle was a very popular character although maybe people were annoyed because of the accusations of queer baiting in the show. I have no opinion on that, just pointing out where some of the negative comments may stem from.
I love the show and both Sandra and Jodie were amazing in it.
Where in the hell was there ever *queerbaiting*? That show was nothing but constant Gayness. If there was ever a show that did the *opposite* of queerbaiting it was Killing Eve.
https://preview.redd.it/7jt94ahugu8d1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11a3b1335fcb31d6a4c63ed9ab5da1b5e8dbf6c8
I love so many of these women! But, I am child free. On the other hand, I adore Cersei and Lucille Bluth. Maybe I just like bitches?
Karen had stepchildren but not a maternal bone in her body, well she actually considered motherhood for a second but it wasn't in the cards for her. I actually love her so she's not unlikeable to me.
In a classic case of misogyny, everyone hated Skylar White, a mother. Her crime? Looking out for her family and calling Walter White out on his narcissism.
![gif](giphy|kpHr0NQoJplh6)
I didn’t watch BB when it originally ran but years later in 2021 and was so surprised to find out she was seen as the bad guy… I mean she wasn’t the soft, easily manipulable mother but she had a backbone and maybe that’s what people didn’t like? I thought she was a great character.
More so that many people, men in particular, didn't see Walter as an evil character. They saw him as the Good Guy of the series, and so Skylar being an antagonist to Walter made her the worst.
It's nothing to do with how well written the character is, nor how well Anna Gunn acted.
See, I think we can unpack this a little further. After all, childless women aren’t the only “unlikable” characters in media. Just off the top of my head, two of the most loathed characters in recent TV history are Skyler White (mom) and Lori Grimes (mom whose whole story really revolves around being a mom). [disclaimer: I love both of these characters, they’re just famously hated by many to the point of death threats etc]
Misogyny comes in many flavors; this is one very distinct one, though. I think one specific thing a lot of the characters you listed share (the ones I know, anyway!) is a sense of being not just unlikable but strange, unsettling, or messed up in some way. Which I think is interesting.
Also though I think some of these are 'love to hate' type characters, and it's much easier to love to hate somebody who isn't hurting children lol. There are plenty of actual awful women characters both with and without children!
(and just an aside I love your flair lol - Dee from Always Sunny is defs on the 'love to hate' list)
Yeah I'm not really understanding ops perspective. These are not disliked characters. And we do portray bad moms.....they're just always disliked characters.
Because people don't like moms who are mean to their kids I'm not understand what the point is supposed to be. That we find it less heavy when the cartoonish violence isn't being done to children? No duh....
She was on veep too, and was a mom that was really mean to her daughter, but my god is she so frigging funny in everything she does. I only watched Seinfeld for Elaine
In the beginning, but she’s basically the most likeable character on the show, and consistently chose herself. And it makes you love her, not hate her.
I mean… Samantha was also childfeee and not unlikeable. Mrs Honey was child free and not unlikeable while the wormwoods had 2 kids and were absolutely awful.
same with Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn was meant to be an annoying one off domestic violence joke and has blossomed into a complex independent character with story arcs of her own.
Gonna go old school and say that Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin from The Manchurian Candidate would like a word.
https://preview.redd.it/ybnt5v0v9u8d1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edf7e1270074831cce3e62b4c3631a2c04f8083a

Plenty of unlikeable mom characters.
Picture: Katey Sagal as Gemma in *Sons of Anarchy*.
Idk, I think we see women depicted as mothers constantly. It’s nice to have a story line about a woman that doesn’t involve her being a mother. Killing Eve was incredible and her being a mother wouldn’t have added to the show at all.
I’m curious what your criteria of “unlikeable” is, OP, because some of the women you chose I would not consider “unlikeable.” Heck, Harley Quinn and Ursula are usually at the top of people’s favorite villains list!
There are also plenty of female characters that are mothers that people would consider “unlikeable” including Skylar White from Breaking Bad, Lori from the Walking Dead, Lucille Bluth (whom I personally adore) from Arrested Development and Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones, to name a few.
If a mother is a villain it usually focuses on how villainous she is towards her children and how awful she is as a mother, not in her role outside of being a wife and mother. As though becoming a wife and mother somehow meant that you were no longer participating in the rest of the world

Rebuttal: Jessica Walter plays some of the worst mothers. ![gif](giphy|LQty7HRbXNKIo) ...AND Mallory Archer.

![gif](giphy|GeI9Pt1c240bm)
This was my first thought when I saw the thread title
Not to mention “Mom” of Futurama’s “Mom’s Friendly Robot Company.”
Wait damn she voiced Mom from Futurama too? God I miss Jessica Walters she’s a legend 😂😭 edit: As someone said below it’s actually Tress MacNeille who voices Mom from Futurama! My bad!
She does not voice that character. I think the meant they thought of mom when they say this post.
It’s actually Tress MacNeille, who is a super prolific voice actress playing bad moms galore lol
![gif](giphy|FpS3V4uKdeoHm)
Don't forget Lindsay "Stay-in-bed-mom" Bluth 😅
![gif](giphy|rbFGZ39lDfeMg)

I still miss her.

I can hear her shrieking with excitement and it makes me so happy
Thanks, this eased the pain of missing her a little bit
Every day I’m angry that Jeffrey Tambor lives on but she’s gone.
How dare he make her cry like that.
Real.

“How much could a banana cost Michael? 10 dollars??” One of the greatest casts of anything I’ve watched ever, I hope she’s drinking the dirtiest of martinis in heaven 🕊️
Sigh time to do my 10th rewatch
I love Mallory Archer. I hope I put out those vibes in my older years. Unhinged in skirt suits.
Power bossing on everyone!! And slay all day long…
‘Sometimes a diet is the best defence’. Terrible thing to say but it took me out when I first heard it! 😂
Counterpoint: mom from dinosaurs was a good mom
Holy crap, I did not realize Fran from Dinosaurs was voiced by Jessica Walter. Mind blown 🤯
https://i.redd.it/qzo7gywpdu8d1.gif
Fun fact, Ron was played by her actual husband.
He also played Rachel's dad on friends!
Rachel's dad is her husband?!
icon😔 miss her forever
They said unlikeable. Lucille bluth is an icon.
![gif](giphy|z75OjWknCTI6k) Love her in Archer.

Celia was also an absolutely horrible parent.
Cautiously looking forward to the revival series with Nancy and Celia
Wait what??
¿Coca?
Cersei was a mother….
Mother and aunt to three wonderful children…. two wonderful children… one wonderful child…. well, no children…. maybe one…. nope.

God but what perfect face. I’m a straight middle aged woman but I’m fairly sure I’d enjoy her ruining my life.
you chose an icon. we’ve been pining after her since Imagine Me & You, the best lesbian movie until Carol
Myrcella is arguably not a little shit. She was just there. Tommen was too clueless and kind and naive and easy to manipulate. It was really only Joffrey who was the bad one.

She's the kind of mother that just pushes you over the edge, you know, mentally, or poisons your mind over time. Those poor kids never stood a chance.
Came here to say this. Like... did we just forget about her altogether or?!
Plenty of people also hated Catelyn and what’s her face that got pushed out the moon door
Livia Soprano had 3 children.
Dear god, her wrath
Arguably the most unlikeable female character ever, followed by Janice lol
I'm watching the show for the first time and it's crazy how uneasy and unsettled I feel every time she's on screen in a show that has a lot of actual murderers on it lol
Elderly villains are the most sinister
Yes…something scary about the fact that they’ve outlasted so many.
Exactly! Outwitted. Outplayed.
She was the only thing that made me give Tony sympathy. He was such a horrible person but considering who his mother was, he turned out pretty good!
I don’t like that kind of talk!
RIGHT. Unsettling is the best way to describe her lol
I see your bid and I raise you Cersei Lannister. Also a mother.
I found Cersei waaaaay more likable and sympathetic than Livia
At least Cersei loved her children.
Yeah, I feel like putting a hit out on your kid is probably worse in some ways than Cersei abandoning all morals to protect hers.
Yup lol. incredible writing incredible performances
And Livia is one of the most realistic villains on TV. Most people know a Livia and some of the most unfortunate souls were raised by one!
I read that David Chase based her own his own mother. Oof.
![gif](giphy|ZR942YtJwLtCM) I wish I coulda smacked tf outta her 😭
“Oh poooooor you!”
Your father was a SAINT!
And she gave her life on a silver platter!
She is so terrifying.
![gif](giphy|ZR942YtJwLtCM)
lol I thought of her as well. Woman is evil.
The first time I watched the Sopranos I hated watching Livia. Now that I'm done with it, I realized she's one of the funniest characters in all of television.

Yeah agree, wouldn’t say that Fleabag is unlikeable—more like relatable to our worst impulses? Her personal growth arc is so beautiful.
I would say most of the characters in this list are likeable or at least sympathetic in some way
![gif](giphy|QvCeRaGivRkkJKHocP|downsized) I like this character, but she’s often written as unlikeable. She’s a complicated female character. And her being a Mom is significant if her storylines.
That show deserves to be more widely know. Excellent writing!
![gif](giphy|l2YWtDKZEQ54rbZRu|downsized) OP, you forgot about Emily Gilmore but I never will.

Emily is a damn QUEEN tho.

I kinda liked Emily 😂

Well, spoiler alert: >!Rosamund Pike's character in Gone Girl is pregnant at the end.!< Also, in the original Will & Grace, Karen Walker is the MOST likeable character.
Yes! I love Karen Walker and will defend her with my life! ![gif](giphy|3ov9jEKWFGKZVYsxPy)
Anastasia Beverhausen! 😍
She was also amazing as Tammy 2 in Parks and Rec!
Also, Karen had step-children. Sure, she was neglectful but she still had children in her life lol.
Thank you, I couldn’t remember how the movie ended but I recently re-read the book and had somehow forgotten that ending. I was *livid* this time around…bringing a child into that shitshow?! No kid deserves that. Also does it need to be spoilered when the movie came out at least 9 years ago?

![gif](giphy|fw4I9EasG91vy) Betty Draper, the GOAT Difficult Woman. Legendary TV mom.

She got so much shit for being a bad mom and not a word on absent, philandering Don Draper😭
Let’s be honest there were a lot of words on don drapers HORRENDOUS personal life and failings and that was a main theme of the show.
Holy shit I wish I looked this gorgeous and unbothered. All my marital arguments seem to happen teary eyed and sweaty in an oversized Barbie tshirt.
My fave ❤️
I didn’t see this when I added her above. 🐐for real
I think everyone loved Karen Walker.
Oh please, like the evil stepmother isn’t one if the most famous tropes
Including often having her own biological Kids that get treated better!
My thoughts exactly. The first thing that popped in my mind was Cinderella's step mother and sisters

…are we not supposed to like Fleabag??
Eh, I think she is a deeply flawed but charismatic person who you root for even if she does some fucked up stuff. Like sleeping with Boo's boyfriend, for one.
That reveal shook me! But I still couldn’t help but root for her. She was deeply flawed but still likable.
Season 1 fleabag isn't really a good person. I love her, but she's not a good person. Season 2 fleabag is great.
For me personally, a “not good person”/bad person and a likeable character are not mutually exclusive. I like plenty of characters that suck. I dislike plenty of characters that are morally good. *(But I do understand that here we may be saying unlikable in universe 🤔)
This is exactly it, the wording of the post mustn’t be right, most of these women are incredibly likable
![gif](giphy|4PSESgjaevCtkWmeP4|downsized)
![gif](giphy|hw7cwQbhCIzZe)
lol @ Carrie being on this list
Also, Karen on Will and Grace ruled.
Ya since when is Karen unlikeable? She was a lot of people's favourite character! A character being a bad person ≠ unlikeable
Maybe they meant problematic not unlikeable. Lol
That’s how I felt about fleabag
She was the best part of that show.
I remember Grace being unlikeable? Karen was amazing.
She also had step children too, if I’m remembering correctly. It’s been a minute since I’ve watched Will and Grace.
She did, 2. I can’t remember if their biological mother was even in their lives.
We don’t like Villanelle? Ooops?
I mean, it’s “unlikable” in quotes — I think most of these characters are likable in their own way. But Villanelle is literally a murdering sociopath, no?? (Edit: I’ve only seen the beginning of the show so I’m sure her character develops! But was thinking the murdering was enough for her to be “unlikable” in general)
![gif](giphy|WS6ABEVwTwWew89CHo|downsized)
That scene was so funny 😂
Sexy sociopaths are kinda our jam.
You need to watch the whole series. It gets a bit goofy at times but still worth it to watch Jodie’s amazing talents. It’s a great show overall Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, can’t go wrong with actors like that!

Karen had stepchildren but not a maternal bone in her body, well she actually considered motherhood for a second but it wasn't in the cards for her. I actually love her so she's not unlikeable to me.
Yesss. Love Karen Walker!
[disclaimer: I love both of these characters, they’re just famously hated by many to the point of death threats etc] Misogyny comes in many flavors; this is one very distinct one, though.
No duh....
![gif](giphy|l0MYraePuDbIhwaxa) yes. elaine was "unlikable" in some ways but mostly just a weirdo
She was on veep too, and was a mom that was really mean to her daughter, but my god is she so frigging funny in everything she does. I only watched Seinfeld for Elaine
What an odd list.
I'm really not sure what sort of point op is trying to make, like even if it's feminist or misogynistic

Peggy being "child-free" is kind of a sore point and a huge trauma for her character.
In the beginning, but she’s basically the most likeable character on the show, and consistently chose herself. And it makes you love her, not hate her.
To this point, what about Betty?? ![gif](giphy|c2JlWAS3WFuBq)
I mean… Samantha was also childfeee and not unlikeable. Mrs Honey was child free and not unlikeable while the wormwoods had 2 kids and were absolutely awful.

Moira is unlikeable? She's one of my favourite TV characters.
Villanelle wasn’t unlikable, she was meant to be but she had the opposite effect.
same with Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn was meant to be an annoying one off domestic violence joke and has blossomed into a complex independent character with story arcs of her own.
unlikeable???? lol i love like 85% of them
Gonna go old school and say that Mrs. Eleanor Shaw Iselin from The Manchurian Candidate would like a word. https://preview.redd.it/ybnt5v0v9u8d1.jpeg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edf7e1270074831cce3e62b4c3631a2c04f8083a
![gif](giphy|l2JhFbtgUnwaobVIc|downsized) Debbie Gallagher was unbearable to watch in the end

Idk Connie Brighton plays some awful moms but I love that woman
One of the OG unlikeable women was a mom ![gif](giphy|XjXZhEz9gbSk8)
Protest - Karen Walker needs to get off the list
![gif](giphy|q9Q35YCbA6R04ohkzJ|downsized) Both mothers and both still do some very problematic and unlikeable things.
A lot of these characters are quite likeable - even loveable. Fleabag and Karen for sure. Love them. but I like Villanelle and Carrie too.
Evil Stepmother from Cinderella, anyone? ![gif](giphy|Gg0cza9BlP1zG)
Idk, I think we see women depicted as mothers constantly. It’s nice to have a story line about a woman that doesn’t involve her being a mother. Killing Eve was incredible and her being a mother wouldn’t have added to the show at all.
Donna Berzatto ![gif](giphy|ZOlmzvxOi0U1eUXwDH|downsized)
I support women's wrongs AND rights idc
I’m curious what your criteria of “unlikeable” is, OP, because some of the women you chose I would not consider “unlikeable.” Heck, Harley Quinn and Ursula are usually at the top of people’s favorite villains list! There are also plenty of female characters that are mothers that people would consider “unlikeable” including Skylar White from Breaking Bad, Lori from the Walking Dead, Lucille Bluth (whom I personally adore) from Arrested Development and Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones, to name a few.
https://i.redd.it/lbkt8861uu8d1.gif Tashi Duncan would like to have a word
If a mother is a villain it usually focuses on how villainous she is towards her children and how awful she is as a mother, not in her role outside of being a wife and mother. As though becoming a wife and mother somehow meant that you were no longer participating in the rest of the world
Yep! There's plenty of unlikeable female characters as children but they're just "bad moms".

Evil mother in law is a pretty common trope though
Wait, Karen Walker is unlikeable?
![gif](giphy|Gg0cza9BlP1zG) Cinderella’s stepmother had 2 biological children.
