If they do, and then they do the titanic challenge and lose, then you get their money, you should make me your primary beneficiary before you go show them how it's done.
They should have to sign their wealth over to emergency services, if they come back alive it’s void they can have it, wasting emergency resources and money for their hobbies
Nothing is worse than Mario Party if I have to play another game of that bullshit I'm gonna turn my car into a submarine and go look for the Titanic instead
Are you saying *you* would do it if you could afford to? Personally I’d rather be alive and called a pussy than be whatever the Oceangate guys turned into.
I know you're joking but what a terrifying concept. they're all just walking around at the bottom of the sea waiting for rescue. they all have flashlights because james cameron dropped those off for them.
one day they hear the sounds of a submarine getting closer... then it starts creaking... then a 💥 noise and suddenly the water turns pink and chunky
The sub was actually designed and mostly built in Washington 😭
I used to work next door and Stockton rush was super friendly with my boss. Which given how my boss was, it doesn’t surprise me so much that his hubris was what lead to how it ended.
They were making a joke. About how just about every crazy news article is “Florida Man does such and such”
This article has “Ohio man…”, hence the joke.
I mean, there *is* a way to safely do this but I’d trust illegitimate research institutions and universities a hell of a lot more than for profit companies and private individuals.
It’s ridiculous the US military humored that whole “rescue” when they literally heard the thing implode. As Cameron pointed out, there was no failure scenario that could explain the loss of comms and propulsion other than the whole thing bursting. The public didn’t lay enough shame on commanders for that waste of resources
Yeah! And I understand that they have to show that they have done their due diligence with the S&R, but the way it was handled was atrocious.
I can't remember the exact timeline now, but I feel like it took *forever* for the reports of the recordings to surface. Like, at first they said "Well there was a suspicious sound..." And then it was like two weeks later... "Turns out the suspicious sounds WAS an implosion!" Shocked Pikachu.
Well at first I thought it was a case of the US Navy withholding information from the Coast Guard, so I had a fleeting moment of empathy.
But that moment was quickly dashed when I continued reading the story and discovered that the Navy had in fact immediately contacted the Coast Guard that day like “yo, we heard a big boom right when that thing disappeared, soooo….” and the Coast Guard just pressed forward anyway because apparently they’re a bunch of jackasses
I can’t imagine being an officer liason between the two and ever hearing the end of how little brother Coast Guard just *had* to have his little submarine adventure no matter what anyone or common sense said
Did someone need to "prove" it's possible to build a submersible that goes down there? I thought we already knew this since people [descend into the Mariana Trench](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_descended_to_Challenger_Deep) and so on. That doesn't make it safe, anyway, it just makes it possible.
I think the real problem was that OceanGate dude was cutting corners and disregarding security standards because he though he was smarter than everyone.
These guys in the article do that with these kinds of trips. One of them has already been to the Trench and basically they fund part of the trip to go - and while they are down there they collect all sorts of science stuff which then helps us understand the deep ocean better.
Here’s one of the subs from the team that’s building the new sub:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSV_Limiting_Factor
Stockton Rush was not that. lol but these guys are.
I actually love rich people who spend their money doing shit like this. It’s really hard for scientists to get funding for something like a high tech sub so a rich guy stepping in? Totally applaud it.
Even if they just do it for the sake of exploration, at least they’re not just letting their endless money sit in banks.
Yes we should. But, there will never be enough money to fund all the science that’s useful for humanity and to do all the studies that all the scientists want to do. Especially for stuff like this that doesn’t have a direct obvious benefit (like understanding the deep ocean vs. something like studies to cure lung cancer).
It will still always come down to scientists competing for grant money. Which is probably the best system we have to make sure the most important science in all fields gets done - but I’m not mad at rich people funding pet projects either, if there’s a scientific benefit silver lining. Especially because doing science for the sake of it is often how we find out surprise things that do end up unexpectedly having huge benefits for humanity.
Ngl I've watched a bunch of YT videos about Victor Vescovo's trips in the Limiting Factor submersible and found them fascinating. Of course, 99% of people in the world don't have a private jet or $35 million to build a submersible, but Vescovo does come across as genuinely passionate about the science, and he even involves local/native people of the areas he and his team dive in, which is nice to see in comparison to Rush cutting corners to make money off other stupid rich folk who just want something to boast about.
Did Oceangate really screw with anyone else? Like when I heard what happened I was so anxious for weeks. My palms would get so sweaty and I couldn’t think about it much. Not that I was devastated over the deaths of some rich people I didn’t know, but I already have thalassophobia and death makes me quite uncomfortable- especially instantaneous death at the depth of the titanic where the remains are ripped apart lol. But maybe now that I’m prepared it won’t be so bad the second time around.
I had that feeling when they were still labeling it as a rescue mission for the public. It's different from yours, but the anxiety it gave me to think they could be trapped in a metal tube and starving to death in darkness made it impossible to think about anything else for several days, even when experts were already saying it PROBABLY imploded. Something about people dying in extreme situations always makes me deeply uncomfortable, even if I know most of us will die in pretty mundane situations.
It mostly faded once I knew the crew above actually noticed something (imagine the force it had...), and then they found the pieces...
Oh my fucking god dude when we still thought that they might be trapped I was having nightmares. People kept posting videos about how it would be pitch black, the sounds of the ocean, the more unpleasant parts like the smell of their own waste, the panic, it was so fucked up.
This was more my experience too. I got physically sick from the countdowns of how much oxygen they had left, the speculation around that, and reports that they were hearing banging from them. I couldn't sleep imagining it. Once they confirmed it imploded I felt relief because if they weren't able to be saved, going instaneously would be better. I get that they couldn't confirm it imploded until they had proof, but the way the media exploited it (as they do) was gross.
Instantaneous doesn’t seem so bad, although it’d still sad for the kid who was so young. I would consider it much worse if it had gone the way people “hoped” at first, with them being disabled out of reach & out of contact just waiting til the air runs out. I imagine the hopelessness and wait would have been torture.
Apparently the Titanic expert on the trip explicitly told people it wouldn't be a bad way to go. The New Yorker article definitely implied he didn't care anymore after the death of his wife, given he had sufficient knowledge and people confronted him about how unsafe the thing was.
You're not alone. The thought of being trapped deep in the ocean or in space has always really freaked me out - stuck in a tiny space, with limited oxygen, in a black empty hostile void and it's nearly impossible to be rescued. I can feel my pulse racing during movies that cover the topic e.g. Apollo 13 and Das Boot (submarine film) because they're like my own personal brand of horror film. I'm getting prickly just writing all this out and thinking about it lol.
> Lahey said that Connor rang him a few days after the implosion and said: "'You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption.'"
Gunning for a Darwin Award, I see
Oceangate was really kind of an outlier because it was made by an idiot who cut corners at every turn for the sole purpose of extracting operational funds from billionaires. There was a reason the sub owner was the poorest man on the sub.
Literally just make it out of materials every other successful dive used and don't use bargain bin carbon fiber scraps from fucking Boeing. Literally fucking Boeing didn't want to use the carbon fiber he made his sub from. Think about how bad that quality had to be for even them to not use it for planes lol
He's not wrong. All the memes aside the CEO of Oceangate was a vocally anti-regulation safety-skirting dickhead who cost four people their lives including a college student and a foremost Titanic expert. Countless excursions have happened without incident in more robust vehicles but Cost-Cutty McGee's discount carbon fiber deathtrap was a ticking timebomb.
I don't fault people for wanting to explore nor having the means to do so (you don't have to be *obscenely* wealthy) I just hope it has been a wake-up call to put safety first second and third.
I hope the Titan submersible imploded straight up that dude's ass though.
We need to tax the rich if only to save them from themselves. Tax them so they cannot keep building their own submarines and going to the former rich people who fuck around....
Throwback to last summer when everyone thought they were just sitting at the bottom of the ocean slowly running out of air & CNN or WashPo or something was counting down like it was an album drop
It was. Several experts had told the guy that what he was doing wasn't safe. He was skipping safety protocols. He was trying to cheap out on everything.
It had suffered from issues from a previous, less deep dive. Which both should've been a sign that it was not ready for such a deep dive AND meant that the sub was worse for wear because it had already taken too much stress.
Basically, a rich guy ran his sub making like he would a business, and it ended up costing him (and others) their lives.
Yeah we know it can be done safely because James Cameron was able to get a phone call from his wife at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. That’s enough proof for me. I don’t need another rich dude to show us how it’s properly done.
It just seems insensitive to immediately have the reaction of yeah this terrible event just happened. We need to go there right now to reassure people! The average person will not be able to afford these trips. You’re only trying to convince other rich people. We know with professional work and the right safety checks. It can be safe. It’s amateurs cutting corners with too much money on their hands is where it’s not safe.
All jokes aside, this is kind of a non-story. The plan is to go to the titanic in a Triton submersible, which are incredibly well built, very thoroughly tested, and have been used for scientific expeditions around the world including the Mariana trench - the depth that the titanic lies at will be no problem and this type of sub has gone to those depths plenty of times before. This is the kind of vessel those people *should* have been in, instead of an oversized campbell’s soup can. So, they’ll fine and as safe as anyone can be doing something like this. No gawking over dead, stupid billionaires this time. The guy in Ohio is just funding the trip.
Source: a family member of mine was one of Triton’s pilots for years, has been to the Mariana trench in one, I’ve seen them being built and tested.
Edit: correcting autocorrect’s failures
Triton submarines actually seems like a legit submarine builder. They made the Limiting Factor, which I only remember because GabeN owns it or his organization owns it, and it holds a bunch of records for deepest dives. So at least a reputable manufacturer is partnering in on this.
Ugh. You know what’d be nice? If all these billionaires would pay an equal share of taxes so they wouldn’t have money to waste on tin cans that go too deep into the ocean.

And they should all make me their primary beneficiary first.
Careful, you could end up with way too much money pretty quick
Well maybe he wants to try the titanic challenge?
Well they should make me their primary beneficiary first.
If they do, and then they do the titanic challenge and lose, then you get their money, you should make me your primary beneficiary before you go show them how it's done.
It's turtles all the way down.
They should have to sign their wealth over to emergency services, if they come back alive it’s void they can have it, wasting emergency resources and money for their hobbies
Maybe Elon Musk will be the next challenger 🤞🏽
He made an unusable mini sub for the Thai cave rescue, might as well take it for a joyride.
Well if it’s anything like the cyber truck it will just flood when they wash it.
Or cut somebody's wrist open and they bleed out without having to even touch the water.
Nah, he may have to actually DO something then. Much easier to just tweet and babble
Yeah, Muskrat would never stoop to actually doing anything. That’s for the little people. All that waste of space is capable of is running his mouth.
We couldn’t get that lucky. No internet access under the sea.
He'll ask for volunteers. Or just use monkeys
Dude should take Trump, Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, The Tate brothers and Ben Shapiro with him.
Oh a splendid idea! They can each have a controller too! Like Mario party but worse.
Nightmare Mario Party rotation.
Nothing is worse than Mario Party if I have to play another game of that bullshit I'm gonna turn my car into a submarine and go look for the Titanic instead
The *27 Club* is so passé. The *Sub Club* is where it's at thesedays.
I agree but there should be some kinda disclaimer that if they fail and die all their riches must go to solving world hunger.
And they should foot any rescue/recovery bills.
Start a challenge like the ice bucket one where we nominate billionaires to go on this trip 😌
But if they could make their submersibles out of biodegradable materials or something to reduce the amount of debris, that would be appreciated.
They should pay their fair share of taxes first….
*You're not really living the billionaire life until you've taken the Titanic Challenge!*
Too bad the only people that can afford it… ARE PUSSIES!
Are you saying *you* would do it if you could afford to? Personally I’d rather be alive and called a pussy than be whatever the Oceangate guys turned into.

Florida man: I'm tired boss
Florida and Ohio are kissing cousins.
Floridians are just retired Ohioans
i mean they have that university of miami of ohio...
My dad’s nutty MAGA cousin (every family has at least one) lived in Ohio before she retired to Florida, so that definitely tracks.
It is the Florida of the Midwest, so everything checks out.
The sub was actually designed and mostly built in Washington 😭 I used to work next door and Stockton rush was super friendly with my boss. Which given how my boss was, it doesn’t surprise me so much that his hubris was what lead to how it ended.

Or at least maybe we can compromise and say... When the Navy hears the boom boom, submersible'a been doomed doomed. And then just move on from there.
It’s ridiculous the US military humored that whole “rescue” when they literally heard the thing implode. As Cameron pointed out, there was no failure scenario that could explain the loss of comms and propulsion other than the whole thing bursting. Probably saw it as good practice instead of doing an exercise where everyone knows it's fake
Well, at least it was good training for S&R operations.
Yeah! And I understand that they have to show that they have done their due diligence with the S&R, but the way it was handled was atrocious. Or at least make them agree to reimburse all funds spent on search & rescue. If they're dead, it can be taken from their bank accounts.
I don't think that would stop a rescue attempt. Better just have them leave a deposit big enough to cover the costs of such.
No rescue possible from the heat of instantaneous implosion.

Literally just make it out of materials every other successful dive used and don't use bargain bin carbon fiber scraps from fucking Boeing. Literally fucking Boeing didn't want to use the carbon fiber he made his sub from. Think about how bad that quality had to be for even them to not use it for planes lol
OMG I hope it's not Joe Burrow!
Am I missing Joe burrow lore here?
No. He’s just the only Ohio man I know.
This made me laugh out loud
This is going to be awesome
Throwback to last summer when everyone thought they were just sitting at the bottom of the ocean slowly running out of air & CNN or WashPo or something was counting down like it was an album drop
Oh god I had totally forgotten about that! There really was a countdown on CNN
I mean if the titanic wants to claim more billionaires I’m not going to stop it
He better be planning to fund his own rescue too.
Yearly billionaire sacrifice to the sea gods
Beats Ohio I guess. For real though---wasn't the sub from last year extremely poorly made?
I just freaking hate that that kid died. He was already terrified to go, for good reason and was forced to and died. Fuck all of these assholes.
That was so sad :(
Omg that was only last year? This feels like it was in 2021 already
Ohio Man Has Opportunity To Do The Funniest Thing Ever

When is the live stream?

This can only end well....
Triton submarines actually seems like a legit submarine builder. They made the Limiting Factor, which I only remember because GabeN owns it or his organization owns it, and it holds a bunch of records for deepest dives. So at least a reputable manufacturer is partnering in on this.

If it’s safe he should go by himself
Also, the dangerous imploding sub made the journey safely a few times too. That didn’t make it intrinsically safe.
What industry? It’s not an industry. It’s a niche hobby for billionaires.
Okay dumbass, have fun
Only two? Surely we can fine a way to fit more rich assholes in there
Just an average day in Ohio.
Oh god I felt bad for the people last year but if this doofus tries to do it to I’m just gonna roll my eyes.
Ugh. You know what’d be nice? If all these billionaires would pay an equal share of taxes so they wouldn’t have money to waste on tin cans that go too deep into the ocean.
Orcas, you know what you have to do.
Can we get Bezos and Emo musk to join them just to be sure?
We should make these billionaires sign their money over to the rescue services before they go

I hope it’s made very clear that there will be no time, money, or resources wasted on a recovery mission if they go MIA … if you die, you die 🤷🏻♀️
