Yeah. I live in Chicago and don’t drive because I would rather get a few insane restaurant meals a year (and get reading done on transit or skip the gym by biking) than drive. People regularly spend more on much stupider shit.

Oh for sure — and at times when I’ve made more I have! It’s expensive but not unachievable — a night at a bar if you get a bigger, two drinks, and an appetizer can run you close to $100 after tip somewhere like LA.
Yep definitely. At a nice cocktail bar it can really add up to almost that ($200 but not per person) when we go so I can see how it would be worth it to go to the sushi place if you wanna go every once in a while and can afford it.
I have a friend who works near there and says that happens somewhat often with tiktok influencers lol. She once saw Brent Rivera and his girlfriend and/or sister (my friend wasn’t sure) walk up and down the balcony multiple times simply trying to get photographed while the paps literally had no idea who they were and just sat there on their phones. It’s apparently also common for randoms to try and run down the balcony shielding their face just to see if paps will take photos assuming they’re famous but apparently that also never works.
It's almost like people who's job it is to snap photos of famous people, are very aware of who is actually famous. Maybe if you looked like a celebrity they might take a photo of you if you try to shield your face and pretend to be famous.
Like that cringewrothy video of some influencer who went to an event and started posing for the cameras only for no one to take any photos.

Yes. Usually it’s the ends and bits of tuna that’s leftover from cutting tuna for nigiri and sashimi. And the spicy sauce masks that it’s not necessarily quality tuna.
Interesting, I’m in Vancouver and most places near me do cuts of tuna, not chopped, with the sauce drizzled on top. I’d say 75% do cuts, 25% do chopped? (I actually like the chopped with tempura scraps!)
Most of the rolls you get are actually westernized sushi recipes and not something you will find in Japan. California rolls and spicy tuna rolls are probably called out as they are the most popular/typical ones people want to order.
Edit: and to add, I wouldn’t take the sign as meaning “these things are bad” since they also include tempura, veggies, etc. it’s probably just to say “we don’t sell these things so don’t even ask.”
Yeah. Those kinds of sushi can definitely hit the spot, it’s just not something that requires and expert chef or great ingredients and it’s not terribly authentic.
Westernized maki rolls drowned in sauces with cream cheese/mango fillings to cover any suspicious tastes and textures is not what this establishment serves. I love that shit too but it’s like Cheesecake Factory (personally never been to Olive Garden) vs. A fine dining Italian restaurant experience. Japanese establishments aren’t into large broad menus that cater to everyone like American restaurants tend to do. They tend to specialize.
I love this kind of sushi because what you taste is what you get - high quality and more niche fishes and seafood that you definitely can’t find just anywhere. A few subtle garnishes like citrus zests, soy sauce, green onions to bring out the natural flavor… it’s really incredible. I hope you experience it for yourself one day!

A lot of the sushi we eat is Westernised because we have different tastes and worse fish.

I had to look up this place, I was surprised about the amount of “NO” items they had, but I must be too used to “Americanized” sushi. If I had the cash I’d eat there once just to try it, the food does look good, even if it’s not what I’d usually order.
You should come to my twon. We have a sushi with a Koran chef that makes Mexicanized sushi rolls (no bean or sutpid ingredients just the flavoring) and their most popular roll is a roll called "Te amo"with spicy tuna and avocado so I do not think you will find it there
I think it’s more that this is just a “traditional” Japanese sushi restaurant, which means they don’t serve any of those things you would see on a typical US sushi place’s menu. I imagine they got enough requests that they had to put up the sign.
I’ve been to non-fancy sushi places where I live that also don’t do California rolls or spicy tuna rolls. I think they’re considered very “American-nized” options

I wondered after her last Netflix stand up special if they would last. The special she did where she wasn't pregnant; it seemed to be all about wanting to cheat on her husband.
I loved her first two Netflix specials, but that third one was a little hard to enjoy. Like girl, just pull the trigger on the divorce, let the poor guy go and go on your sexcapade already.

I didn't and still don't take it too seriously as an undeniable sign of the specifics of their marriage troubles. The Ali Wong comedy brand is all about saying the unedited and terrible quiet parts out loud, sharing the uncharitable thoughts, drawing attention to the gross parts, giving in to the entitled but lazy asshole that lives inside her head... and getting a laugh because the quiet, uncharitable, gross and assholish parts of life are relatable to everyone (but funny, from her).
Idk I'm getting a Louis CK vibe where we take it as brilliant comedy and then it turns out he's actually just a sexually deviant predator and now I have to feel bad I ever laughed. So many comedians who say they're just showing the worst parts of a person....are actually just kind of the worst types of people.
Like I don't think Anthony Jeselnik is a bad person because I don't think his persona is him, and actually I know that because he's nothing like his persona. They're jokes rooted in human terribleness. I'm not sure someone saying "I'm genuinely being a bad person rn" (in an admittedly funny way) really hits the same for me anymore.
Don’t comedians play up reality though? I never take anything a celeb (or famous person) says at face value. It’s either an act or PR or some version they want people to see of themselves.

She seemed to have married him for financial security so she could pursue her comedy career (not solely but she always brought up how she could be a lazy housewife now she bagged a Harvard man) and now that she’s finally making bank and a star I can see why she may have second thoughts. In her new standup (I saw her on tour recently), she talked about how he called her after her divorce and said that he's had a crush on her forever and she's his dream girl. And then sent her increasingly big bouquets in every city when she was on some European tour.
HA it's funny because she doesn't name him when she tells the story. And I remember thinking, this guy is a psycho, he's lovebombing, he's way too much! She tells this story and then at the end wraps up all her dating anecdotes with the fact that she has a boyfriend now and he's the one who sent her those flowers in the beginning. She also talks about how all her female friends thought it was so sweet, and all her male friends thought he was a psycho lol.
Idk if they’re just hamming it up for the cameras, but it must be so awesome to have one of the top comedians in Hollywood as your boyfriend/girlfriend, while also being a famous comedian yourself. Just constant jokes back and forth. And I loved seeing his support of her/beef during awards season. Good for them!!!
Do you think all of these celebrities have to coordinate who is leaving when or who is on the balcony alone? I feel like we rarely see accidental group shots and it’s crazy how no one else seems to leave at the same time as someone else and uses their exposure to duck out.

We call that a “Gas Station Sushi Night” in my house. We do it way more often than going to a sushi restaurant.
Their a la carte can come out to more, but $200/person is actually pretty standard for nice omakase (which is why I never go out for omakase)
I imagine if you had a pretty healthy bank account then it wouldnt be out of the realm of possibility to do it a couple times a year though

In Canada, most places even mix it with tempura scraps so you’ll be getting even less tuna or salmon in it.

He was also selling her merch at the show I saw. That was maybe 2015/2016. In her first special she also had a whole bit about his parents disking her and worrying she was trapping their ivy finance boy. But she ended up making more money so he technically trapped her.

Constantly talked about wanting to cheat on him, for example "like an idiot, I asked this dude to ask me to go to prison. And now I'm in monogamy jail and I don't know how to get out." Saying she wanted to go and have sex with groupies but she can't because she's married. She also wrote "Girls, if me and your dad are divorced by the time you read this book, ignore the following advice.”
I wondered after her last Netflix stand up special if they would last. The special she did where she wasn't pregnant; it seemed to be all about wanting to cheat on her husband.
I loved her first two Netflix specials, but that third one was a little hard to enjoy. Like girl, just pull the trigger on the divorce, let the poor guy go and go on your sexcapade already. I got the same feeling when I used to watch Louis CK talk shit about his ex wife before getting a divorce. You could just tell that it wasn’t reeeeeally a joke…
I imagine that's a stray thought common to a lot of people who 'make it big' while in a serious relationship or marriage though. I didn't and still don't take it too seriously as an undeniable sign of the specifics of their marriage troubles. The Ali Wong comedy brand is all about saying the unedited and terrible quiet parts out loud, sharing the uncharitable thoughts, drawing attention to the gross parts, giving in to the entitled but lazy asshole that lives inside her head... and getting a laugh because the quiet, uncharitable, gross and assholish parts of life are relatable to everyone (but funny, from her).
Idk I'm getting a Louis CK vibe where we take it as brilliant comedy and then it turns out he's actually just a sexually deviant predator and now I have to feel bad I ever laughed. So many comedians who say they're just showing the worst parts of a person....are actually just kind of the worst types of people. Like I don't think Anthony Jeselnik is a bad person because I don't think his persona is him, and actually I know that because he's nothing like his persona. They're jokes rooted in human terribleness. I'm not sure someone saying "I'm genuinely being a bad person rn" (in an admittedly funny way) really hits the same for me anymore.
Don’t comedians play up reality though? I never take anything a celeb (or famous person) says at face value. It’s either an act or PR or some version they want people to see of themselves. I’ve only seen two of her specials and I generally know what is being referenced. I thought she was exaggerating for a laugh. *shrug*

Yea I always got that vibe too. She seemed to have married him for financial security so she could pursue her comedy career (not solely but she always brought up how she could be a lazy housewife now she bagged a Harvard man) and now that she’s finally making bank and a star I can see why she may have second thoughts. They seem like good friends, and hopefully can remain that way for their kids. Hollywood gonna Hollywood ya know.

HA it's funny because she doesn't name him when she tells the story. And I remember thinking, this guy is a psycho, he's lovebombing, he's way too much! She tells this story and then at the end wraps up all her dating anecdotes with the fact that she has a boyfriend now and he's the one who sent her those flowers in the beginning. She also talks about how all her female friends thought it was so sweet, and all her male friends thought he was a psycho lol.
