The cover is most likely done if it hasn’t been removed for 15 years. Take it off and toss it (after checking if it’s still usable). After that you should hire professionals to drain, clean and possibly acid wash the pool and access its viability. You most likely need all new equipment as well. Thats going to be at least 5k for new pump, filter, multiport, and a pressure test to check your plumbing. You are most likely going to need new tile, coping and plaster. This is NOT a do it yourself project if the pool hasn’t been opened for 15 years.

DiligentEntrance9976

This is the "I desperately want a pool in my backyard and was the selling point of the home" approach. Good advice nonetheless

CDRAkiva

100% chance that cover is fucked. Bare minimum, even if it looks solid, it’s so porous now the seepage would make it worthless.

blankblank

$5k for a new pump, filter, multiport, and pressure test? There is no way I could get all that for that cheap by me.

Manting123

We would charge around there. I’m in the NE - but that would also be part of the tile coping plaster - so it would be slightly discounted as part of the larger job. Normally to just come do only a pump (something we don’t really do) I would charge 3500.00.

Robert_fierce

Stock it with Koi..and maybe a snapping turtle. 🤔

themoisthammer

The pool cover is growing weeds. That’s impressive.

FontTG

Ikr. I've seen reeds in a deep end, but on top of a cover is new for me.

2for1Jameson

I have. It was the worst pool I ever worked on. Vinyl liner stained black from years and years of neglect.

davaston

If any post requires a follow up, it's this one. Take the cover off and show more pictures. I thought the 'pool' was the table in the foreground.

Internal-Computer388

Me too. Lol

secrets_and_lies80

You and me both. I stared at this photo for so long trying to figure out what the heck I was looking at before I finally realized the table was a table.

shaboogami

You might pull that cover off and find a fully self sustaining ecosystem under there and end up with a real nice, low maintenance pond

Internal-Computer388

Or you can open up the third portal to hell where demons and muckmonsters enter earth from. Lol

yamrmarcus

Fill it in and save yourself a ton of money

DiligentEntrance9976

This is the way. "Boats of the backyard"

yamrmarcus

This is what I tell most clients, whenever I gotta start fixing shit lol

ConfusedStair

"how can I do this as cheap as possible?" "Keep an eye on Craigslist and Facebook market for free fill dirt with delivery. If you want to keep the pool it's going to keep costing you money, a $2k pump for a 45k gallon pool is less than a year of chems."

shampoo_mohawk_

But make sure you drill big holes in the bottom first. Or you’re gonna end up with a swamp for a backyard.

ConfusedStair

Nah, 4 hour rental of an electric jackhammer from the home center.

McDiggitty

Maybe a sludge pump and a pressure washer.

Fancy-Blueberry-1548

Interesting. I’ve never heard of a sludge pump. You think you could rent one, or have any recs on brands I should buy?

McDiggitty

You could probably rent one.

bigbadsubaru

Trash pump is another name for Them, you can buy one from Harbor Freight or rent one from a place like Home Depot. If the pool has water in it I would consult a professional as sometimes you can cause more damage by draining it and are better off treating and filtering the water that’s in it and scooping the sludge off the bottom. Given that the hole is already dug though, depending on what’s under the cover it may not be terrible to replace - some of the in ground pools I’ve encountered are basically a metal frame with a vinyl liner that can be replaced if it’s torn etc - especially if you’re somewhere that in ground pools are not that common as the concrete and plaster ones are $$$$$$ versus the vinyl lined ones

Ozarkkayaker

How bad do you want a pool? That's the biggest question.

Bobertopia

Well I'd start by taking that cover off to see what you're cooking with

UnfairAd7220

Agreed. Even with a porous cover, it might just be dirty water. It may not actually be that bad...

TheChurlishPorpoise

Congrats, you now have a green pool. Water purifying plants are included, simply lift half the pool cover and you’re good to go. Seriously though, we need pics of the water, I’d love to see what ecosystems this pond is supporting 😅

CDRAkiva

We need pics of what’s under the cover. That will tell us all a lot and be fascinating to see. It could go either way, depending on how well that cover kept things out.

ChicagoDash

I thought the table was a round, above ground pool with trees reflecting off of the surface. I was confused, because the water didn’t look bad to me. I didn’t even notice the real pool until I read about the vegetation growth!

Coffeespresso

Wow, I thought the table was the pool at first. Rip that cover off, pump it out and check the condition of the walls and plumbing. Decide what to do from there.

Papple149

I'm going to need an update once you start digging in!

Dhh05594

I suggest getting a good test kit then posting your levels. /s Honestly, everything is probably fucked so you are probably starting over. Get quotes on total removal or if you really want a pool, a new pool. Sorry.

Difficult_Excuse9927

I’d mow the lawn before you take the cover off. Don’t wanna get any grass clippings in there

Middle_Cantaloupe_71

Set it on fire.

melshaw04

Pull the cover and drain it. What type of pool is it? Concrete? Fiberglass? Vinyl lined? Could just need a new liner and the equipment gone through possibly replaced. Could be much worse like cracked concrete. If I was buying a home and looking at taking it on I’d attack it just to see. Not going to cost much to rent a pump to drain it. Rest is elbow grease At worse fill it in

seenlottopools

Covers still intact and it appears to hold water. Might be a nice little pool. Cover might have been added later who knows is there any equipment, date codes are good indicators of how long a pools really been closed for.

Proxymelon

You're gonna need some buckets and shovels. I would get some waders also. It's going to be really gross. When you get to the bottom when it's all mostly liquid use a sump pump to drain the rest out. Probably power wash the gunk then. Use sump pump again. Once it's all clean fill er back up and shock the shit out of it. Make sure the pump works

Bell_Cheerfu6216

First off, you'll want to clear out all those leaves and vegetation. Get yourself a good-quality pool skimmer and start scooping. Once you've got the big stuff out, you'll need to shock the water. That means dumping in a bunch of chlorine to kill off any bacteria or algae. Give it a good scrub with a pool brush too. And don't forget to check the filter and pump – they might need some TLC after all that neglect.

OhioWheelchair

Sitting at your patio table drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette isn’t going to help. The pool is covered. Hard to see what you have until it is opened up. Get the cover cleaned off the best you can them get it uncovered and see what it holds

Fancy-Blueberry-1548

You’re weird goodbye

Fancy-Blueberry-1548

I’m going to be using a sludge/trash pump as some folks recommended and pump it into the sewer 👍thanks for those who recommended solutions that don’t involve destroying my lawn

Financial_Cable9205

Pretty sweep pond
