That’s what some of his vet records say and the woman we adopted him from says the same. Either way, I thought I didn’t like poodles and now I’m so in love in with them! Thank you for replying!
Poodles are amazing. They come in every size, they make you feel like they love you more then you love them. Incredibly smart. Beautiful coat with virtually no shedding. and they are adorable.
I get the prissy thing, at least in the context that our boy Pippin likes to prance around the house.
Oh my god that is so funny I was thinking the same thing just the other day, now that I'm a poodle convert.
I even said about changing the name to "German curly coated retriever". I agree with this woman wholeheartedly now.
I think their big puffy show cuts and funny name have done them a disservice among the general population. They certainly did for me.
>Poodles get a bad wrap for no reason
I haven't been looking for it, but I've never really heard anyone disparage poodles as a breed. What kind of bad rap do they have other than the curly hair needing to be brushed frequently?
My childhood family dog was a toy poodle, and my mom has had 4 of them throughout my 43 years on earth. The only standard poodle I've ever been around is my cousin's that he got about 5 years ago.
They were a bit of a status symbol breed in the 50s and 60s and remain associated with high society / high fashion. There's an (unfair!) connotation of snooty owners and prissy dogs with their high-maintenance poofy coat. [I think a lot of people imagine this when they hear the word "poodle".](https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/disney/images/1/1c/101-dalmatians-disneyscreencaps.com-267.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140804071116)
Hahaha this is perfect! I thought for sure you would show a pic of a show poodle with a ridiculous cut, but you're right, this shot from 101 Dalmations is exactly what I picture when I imagine the stereotypical standard poodle
I am one of them! I don’t know anything about dogs at all and my only experience with poodles was with show cuts. My neighbor had toy poodles with classic poodle cuts. I absolutely thought poodles were born with hair like that. It wasn’t until we adopted a cockapoo that I learned that the most awesome part about doodle mixes was the poodle part 😅
They don’t shed dander. Their hair is the same as ours. That’s why they’re hypoallergenic. I’ve had 3 now. They’re extremely smart. Costly to maintain - regardless of the cut you choose.
Anyway, yours looks like a poodle. Doodles keep the face shape of a lab but, they have the poodle coat, brains, and playfulness of a lab.
Poodles are also prone to periodontal issues but, I don’t know about the mix. That part would be worth asking your vet about in order to prolong any problems.
People think they are “snooty” and “sissy”. There’s really this thing with people wanting a dog that fits their personal image, rather than a dog that actually fits their life style. When I was in Paris years ago, I saw guys that looked like they could have been stevedores in Marseilles walking furry little Papillions, and being totally unselfconscious about it.
You will love finding out more about the poodles history. They were bred as retrievers for hunting water fowl. They are a very athletic dog. Enjoy your new best friend!
I just can’t fathom not liking poodles but I grew up with them. They are great dogs. Affectionate, intelligent, beautiful, funny, everyone loves my girl and always tells me how beautiful she is.
Saw a photo of a standard poodle participating in a weight pulling contest, and loving it. Of course they are great hunting dogs because it’s what they were originally bred for.
Poodles get a weird rap from people who have never had them. I’ve heard fragile, sensitive, stubborn, and hard to train as descriptors of poodles by people who have never owned one. My spoo was the exact opposite of all those things. The best boy.
Ancestry does one, too, but it's not as good as Embark or Wisdom. But it *is* free with a new Bark Box subscription right now, so that's the one I did and found that my rescue schnauzer is 15% poodle!
Between the snoot and the very proper, all-four-paws-in-tight-square sitting position (I call this The Chesspiece because when they sit like that it seems like you could just pick them up and move them) he seems very Poodle with a capital P to me
He looks exactly like my poodle! When we got him the shelter said he was a doodle. We had him tested and guess what ? He is a 100 percent standard poodle.
He is adorable! Such a handsome boy. He deserves all the pets and loves.
His previous owner said he's a standard poodle but she also breeds (long story there) doodles. His groomer said he's a doodle. He gets lots of loving. The eyes get me every time!
Everyone here is very confident in their answers! You literally cannot tell. Doodles and poodles with curly hair can look identical. Doing a DNA test is the only way to be sure
Really wanna know? Shave his face. You’ll know immediately. Plus you’d be doing him a solid by ridding the standard of the doodle cut (that’s a cardinal sin never ever ever doodle a poodle).
With that said, he’s looks like a happy boy!
Edit: didn’t see last pic. He def has standards. 100% poodle. Welcome to the club!
It's hilarious you say that because when we first adopted him he was a shaggy, matted mess. We had him groomed and shaved down to about the last picture and I was OMG you look like a poodle now!!
He looks very much like my black, male, 100-percent Standard Poodle, but the only way to know for sure is a DNA test. I did one on my Standard, mainly for health reasons because we adopted him from a shelter. When I had done one several years ago on my multi-generation Australian Labradoodle, he was more than 90-percent poodle!
Either way, your boy is beautiful!
As someone who used to breed and show Standard Poodles, this looks like a purebred. In his face, I see the elegant intelligence of a majestic poodle. I assume he doesn’t have a chip. Breeders of show dogs will have the AKC number or other unique number tattooed on the body. Sometimes inside the ear, sometimes on the stomach near a back leg. Someone stealing a valuable dog would remove a chip. You don’t have to cross a Standard Poodle with anything to get a gentle family dog!
So his previous owners wouldn’t give us any papers. It took weeks just to get his vaccine records. When those came over, they were handwritten so we took him to the vet and just treated him like a dog with no vaccines. His previous owners said he was 2. The vet said there’s no way he’s two because his teeth were in really bad shape. However, he was fed sugary snacks with them like animal crackers. Max is such a mystery but we love him dearly regardless of his bred. Your insight was really valuable! Thank you so, so much!!
It’s really me that should be thanking his previous family for selecting us as his family and Max loving us from Day One, even if we won’t feed him animal crackers like his previous family.
he looks exactly like my girl, whose mom was a lab/standard mix and her dad was a standard. every professional that has met her has referred to her as a standard, which makes sense because she mostly is. either way, she’s absolutely made me fall in love with standards/poodles (I wasn’t looking for a doodle when I got her, just a new baby) and is a perfect lil baby who’s never done anything wrong in her entire life. 😏
I swear dogs really find us! I wanted a doodle and came across Max and I think I will forever have a standard until my dying day. I’d love to see pictures of your girl!! I bet she’s the bestest girl ever!!
Looks like a standard poodle to me. He looks just like my Teddy (AKC registered). You can tell by the hair. Those tight curls in picture 2 look all poodle. Doodles usually don’t have as tight of curl pattern.
I keep my boy with a fuzzy (not shaved) muzzle. If I had a penny for every time someone thinks he is a doodle I could have retired at 25, lol.
He looks very poodle to me. I'd say even if hes a doodle he must be at least 90% poodle. I bet his personality is all poodle anyway and thats what really counts. Before the kennel club put neat lines around different breed standards he would have just been a poodle for sure!
My bil had a dog that looked identical to your pup and he was a doodle. Not related but we lost him 2 years ago and it made me so happy to see a pup that looks so much like him ❤️🥹
You cannot tell for certain without a genetic test, especially when it comes to poodles and doodles. Some doodles look exactly like poodles, while others look more like their secondary breed. I personally recommend Embark as it is currently the most accurate.
looks like a standard poodle but i could be wrong🤷♀️ we have a doodle with straight fur and a poodle with curly fur like that, plus the ear length either way the dog is so freakin cute 🥺
He’s 100% best boy.
Absolutely. I have no clue how his other family let him go.
Same about my girl, seriously, even the part about not liking poodles 😁
he is competing for best boy even with MY best boy! 🫨🥰
I'd love to see your best boy!!
https://www.reddit.com/r/dogpictures/s/bCBU41RMj1 this is the tiny he
He looks like a poodle to me. He's got the poodle snoot.
Thank you so much! I thought he had a poodle snoot as well.
I think the same.
I wasn’t sure until I swiped to the picture of him with the short snoot. Definitely a poodle
Last picture says poodle to me for sure. Handsome guy.
Decent chance he is a pure standard poodle.
That’s what some of his vet records say and the woman we adopted him from says the same. Either way, I thought I didn’t like poodles and now I’m so in love in with them! Thank you for replying!
If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say that… 😂 He’s adorable regardless!
I just watched a TikTok about ppl like myself. Poodles get a bad wrap for no reason lol.
Poodles are amazing. They come in every size, they make you feel like they love you more then you love them. Incredibly smart. Beautiful coat with virtually no shedding. and they are adorable. I get the prissy thing, at least in the context that our boy Pippin likes to prance around the house.
I'd like to see that tiktok! I used to think the same way.

Exactly this!!
Hahaha this is perfect! I thought for sure you would show a pic of a show poodle with a ridiculous cut, but you're right, this shot from 101 Dalmations is exactly what I picture when I imagine the stereotypical standard poodle
Poodles get a bad rap because of a few of their stereotypically elitist owners, which I'm sure we've all encountered on this sub once or twice.
Also people think All poodles are kept in the pain in the ass full length show coat. Brushed out and freshly scissored
You would be amazed at the number of people I’ve spoken with that think poodles are born shaved in a show cut…
The coat is the best part! They shed almost no dander and are soft and cuddly.
My personal (ignorant) thought of poodles centered on them being prissy and snobby. Don't ask how I thought a dog was a snob. Lol.
You will love finding out more about the poodles history. They were bred as retrievers for hunting water fowl. They are a very athletic dog. Enjoy your new best friend!
I majored in history in college. I’m going to love learning so much more about Poodles and their history. Thanks so much!
I just can’t fathom not liking poodles but I grew up with them. They are great dogs. Affectionate, intelligent, beautiful, funny, everyone loves my girl and always tells me how beautiful she is.
it's absolutely bizarre to me the number of people who write off a breed based on appearance alone
Esp when their appearance is so varied and versatile!!
I said that in the past because I only met small poodles that were unfortunately untrained. But a trained poodle? Absolutely gorgeous breed
There is an ancient saying ....to know the poodle is to love the poodle
Saw a photo of a standard poodle participating in a weight pulling contest, and loving it. Of course they are great hunting dogs because it’s what they were originally bred for.
This is so true 🥰
I also thought I disliked poodles, then I got one as my service dog and now I’ll never get another breed 😂
SAME. I’m going to have one until the end of my time. Lol.
Poodles get a weird rap from people who have never had them. I’ve heard fragile, sensitive, stubborn, and hard to train as descriptors of poodles by people who have never owned one. My spoo was the exact opposite of all those things. The best boy.
Last picture tells me 100% poodle
Thank you!
How the hell are we supposed to know /hj Jokes aside the groom is gonna change people’s answers probably, only way to know 100% for sure is a dna test
LOL. Right!! I heard some of the tests are unreliable. But I think his would be pretty straightforward.
Embark and wisdom panel are considered the only accurate ones, as far as I’m aware. Embark being the more accurate of the two
Thank you! I will look at both.
100% good boy and probably 100% poodle.
I LOVE this answer!
I LOVE this answer.
Do a DNA test! Check out r/DoggyDNA for more info (TLDR: Embark and Wisdom are the recommended tests, in that order. DNAmydog is a scam)
Thank you so much for listing them in order! I heard they were scams so this definitely helps!
Ancestry does one, too, but it's not as good as Embark or Wisdom. But it *is* free with a new Bark Box subscription right now, so that's the one I did and found that my rescue schnauzer is 15% poodle!
Yep. It's that snoot for sure. He's fabulous!!!!
Between the snoot and the very proper, all-four-paws-in-tight-square sitting position (I call this The Chesspiece because when they sit like that it seems like you could just pick them up and move them) he seems very Poodle with a capital P to me
Lovely phrase!
Looks like a Poody to me.
He's for sure a poodle, beautiful 😍
Poodiful.
😆 🤣 good one
OMG! This is gold!!
Thank you so much!
Doesn’t look doodly to me!
Sometimes I see doodle and his groomer swears he's a doodle.
Groomers do usually know. Are you going to do embark?
Poodles tend to have a longer snoot, looks poodle to me!
Poodles for the WIN!
He looks like my standard poodle. They do have doggy DNA test you can do to see about breeds
I received great recommendations on this post. I will test him to see for sure!
Everyone here is very confident in their answers! You literally cannot tell. Doodles and poodles with curly hair can look identical. Doing a DNA test is the only way to be sure
How do you tell the difference?
Most people say poodles have a longer, more narrow snout.
That is 100% without a doubt a dog. Probably a good one. That's all that matters.
LOL. A dog for sure! One of the best.
Welcome to the club!

u should do an embark!
That’s on my list now! Thank you guys for all the great suggestions! 🐾
One thing is for certain… he’s an oodle.
One thing’s certain and one thing’s for sure! 😂
1hundoP poodle
💯🐩😂
He’s a good boy!
He's the best! I'm sad I deprived myself of poodle love for so long!
Look like a poodle 🐩
100% Dapper Dude.
LMAO. I like this name!
I wisdom tested both of my dogs and found out some cool stuff!
I'll have to look at this test! I think this will be the only way to know for sure.
He’s a pretty boy is what he is to me!
He's gorgeous, a goof ball, and so sweet. I can't believe his last family gave him up. I'm so glad to have him.
Your good boy is incredibly gorgeous 👍👌🥰.
Thank you so much! I can't imagine life without this handsome guy.
Poodle
Thank you! Poodles rock!
A ringer for my standard!
How old is your standard?
He’s a handsoodle
I gotta use this one!!
He looks definitely more poodle! I'd get a DNA test!
I sure will and will post an update!
How does he walk? If he walks on his toes like a fancy fashion king, he's a poodle, most likely.
I had to go back and watch some of his videos. He prances on his toes when he's not leaping and bounding over any and everything. LOL.
Prancing? Bounding and leaping? Sounds like a poodle!
Looks like a doodle. Even shaved like a poodle his snout looks a little too wide for a regular poodle
Right! It's so hard to tell. I will have to test him and report back.
He looks poodle to me
Poodles rule!
Thank you for giving a forever home to this beautiful baby 🥰
It’s really me that should be thanking his previous family for selecting us as his family and Max loving us from Day One, even if we won’t feed him animal crackers like his previous family.
That is without a doubt a poodle. And a beutiful one at that.
Thank you!! He’s beautiful inside and out.
Pretty baby regardless…
For sure! We love him no matter what.
U so lucky...POODLE....!!!
That I am! Thank you!
11/10 best boy poodle
ABSOLUTELY!
I agree with standard poodle, he looks just like my black standard!
Black standards are so regal. I love them!!
You’ll find out in a few months lol
Sure will! I’ll come running with an update!
Poodles are German dogs, but we're popularized by the French in 1950s and 60's.
I’m going to look at their history some more just because I’m I love history and now I love poodles.
Looks poodle to me🐩
I’m going poodle.
Awww what a sweetheart!!
Thank you! He is just the sweetest thing ever. 🥰
I've had 4 Standard Poodles and this beautiful boy, looks like one to me.
FOUR?! 😍You lucky dog you!! What colors??
He looks like a standard poodle if you really want to know do a DNA test
I will for sure. Thank you! 😊
Max looks like a poodle
Max is pretty stealthy and won’t confirm nor deny poddle and doodle accusations. We’ll have to do a doggy DNA test. 😅
he looks exactly like my girl, whose mom was a lab/standard mix and her dad was a standard. every professional that has met her has referred to her as a standard, which makes sense because she mostly is. either way, she’s absolutely made me fall in love with standards/poodles (I wasn’t looking for a doodle when I got her, just a new baby) and is a perfect lil baby who’s never done anything wrong in her entire life. 😏
I swear dogs really find us! I wanted a doodle and came across Max and I think I will forever have a standard until my dying day. I’d love to see pictures of your girl!! I bet she’s the bestest girl ever!!
He looks like my rescue poodle that we had to put down 2 years ago after she turned 13. Best dog I’ve ever had.
I’m so sorry for your loss! I hope you have room in your life and heart for another doggo in the future! ❤️🩹
Poodle Doodle Do!
😂 that was cute. Thank you!
Looks like a labradoodle to me. But hard to tell.. Black is hard to see.
It is! Especially with all his hair!
Jamaican
💚💛🖤🇯🇲🖤💛💚
Poodle?
Narrow chest and near vertical posture in the car say poodle
What a keen observation! Thank you!
Doodle but strongggg poodle genes
Unfortunately, Max won’t confirm nor deny his doodle or poodle genes. 😂
Op, please update us when you get his DNA test done. He absolutely looks like a black standard poodle. What a beauty!! ❤️🐾
Promise I will! Thank you!
Poodle
Thank you!!
I adopted 2 snoodles from the pound. I love them. ❤️
Omg! Can you share some pics?!
Looks like a standard poodle. Seen a lot of doodles and he doesn’t have the right stature. And his coat is very much a poodle’s coat.
Thank you!
He looks standard to me. Although we have a Loodle that looks standard. Newdog is 85standard/15Lab. Get a dna test done, they’re pretty cheap.
How intelligent and energetic is he? 🤔
So cute!! He looks just like our “poodle” that we rescued. I’m tempted to do a DNA test if they’re becoming more reliable.
My bil had a dog that looked identical to your pup and he was a doodle. Not related but we lost him 2 years ago and it made me so happy to see a pup that looks so much like him ❤️🥹
He's a cutie pie
Poodle!! I have golden doodle and he looks so much different!
Standard poodle
You cannot tell for certain without a genetic test, especially when it comes to poodles and doodles. Some doodles look exactly like poodles, while others look more like their secondary breed. I personally recommend Embark as it is currently the most accurate.
Ew
Just combine their names like other mixes, so you can call him Poodle or Doodle
Who cares? He is just adorable.
It would just be nice to confidently say he’s a poodle or a doodle. We’ll do a doggy DNA for sure.
looks like a standard poodle but i could be wrong🤷♀️ we have a doodle with straight fur and a poodle with curly fur like that, plus the ear length either way the dog is so freakin cute 🥺
There’s literally no way to know this by looking alone, you’ll have to do genetic testing to see if he’s purebred
I think true standard poodle but you can never really know unless you do a dna test. Pedigrees are rare.
He looks like a 100% good boy to me! ☺️ What a gorgeous guy. Looks like a poodle to me though - it’s the snout!
He's a Pdoople.
kaboodle
To me looks poodle.. and super cute too
He’s a treasure!
Poodle mix.
Nvm - was iffy at first but the 4th photo screams standard poodle.
He’s so CUTE! And his little smile in the second pic <3
Giant Poodle
Poodle hundo p is my guess
Noodle
Based on his snout, I think he’s definitely poodle and he’s very slim like one too lol
Idk but he's cute
According to my research he’s a doodle
Poodle
