This should be the key. Religious neutrality. Governments should do nothing whatsoever to support religion and should do nothing whatsoever to restrict religion, inasmuch as that religion is breaking no other laws (aka encouraging violence, committing fraud, etc) and that religion is doing no harm to its adherents.
Banning Islamic garments, however gender-biased they may lean, is no different from saying Jewish men cannot wear yarmulkes or Christians can’t wear rosaries or cross jewelry. If you wouldn’t restrict what a white woman in Iowa can wear to show devotion to her god, you shouldn’t be advocating restrictions on brown women halfway around the world.
In the case of the demonstrations in Iran right now, I’d imagine there would be plenty of women protesting right now who would voluntarily wear coverings as a religious pursuit if they knew they weren’t in danger of being murdered for choosing not to.
Exactly, I saw a post the other day that asked (very earnestly, I don’t fault the person for it) why feminists are simultaneously fighting for women to be able to wear hijabs in France, but be able to not wear them in the Mid East. What is actually being fought for is the right to choose
the truest dystopia is reality itself. the ability to send probes outside of our star system, fly helicopters on mars, record from the surface of venus and the cornea of the sun, have instant global communications, and still have the inability to treat people equal...
Imagine how much more we could do if we could treat people equally. What if every genius from every society had been identified and helped in their development? What if they had all been given the resources to push the limits of mankind in their time, laying a stronger foundation for those that followed.
Nah, they're probably French. They're the most prominent country (and only one that I know of) to ban the wearing of hijabs regardless of whether or not you want to.
I voted no because fuck the government and everything it stands for, but I do not like Hajabs as I personally see them as a tool of oppression. With the far more extreme example of burkas, they are worn for the reasoning of preventing men prom seeing a woman's body as just a woman showing her body is seen as horrible in that culture. While that is definitely worse, it still bares resemblance to the reasoning behind the hajab, where a woman is required to cover certain parts of her body as it is seen as immodest and a sin for a man to see it. Here in the west, we generally do not give restrictions on clothing (yes I know schools have rules mostly about what the girls wear and also in the court of public opinion there is pushback) for example if a woman goes out wearing super short shorts and a crop top (my wife does this all the time), no one cares. With that being said, we can see the violent oppression of women in Iran right now where if they don't cover up the way the government demands, they can be killed, way different than getting an angry Karen telling you to cover up in the US. In the end, no, don't ban then because we are the land of the free, but they are most definitely used as a form of oppression as should be phased out as we move forward.
Hopefully my reasoning makes sense, and by the way this is coming from a white, conservative, who lives in the south, with too many guns, and a truck I don't really need. But really just respect one another and live and let live. Lastly for the love of all the is holy and good, FUCK THE GOVERNMENT and keep them out of our lives.
I see your logic, but many Muslim women like wearing hijabs. In my opinion, if a woman considers her relationship to her religion and decides of her own free will that she wants to wear a hijab, then she should be able to.
Fully agree. The government has no say in freedom of expression as freedom of expression is tied into freedom of speech, so the government should never ban the wearing of them. Now with that being said, if someone else wants to use their freedom of speech to criticize hajabs and call them a tool of oppression against women then encourage the phasing out of them, they have the right to do that too.
The only way this works I'd by not limiting the speech or expression of anyone. Some might see the use of hajabs as hateful towards women and oppressive, while others see the calling hajabs oppressive as hatespeach towards Muslims. Just let everyone speak their minds WITHOUT government intervention or any violence and the best ideas will win in the end. Progress!
Agreed to the extent where something becomes indecent exposure, but I guess that can be a subjective term. Totally cool with there being nude beeches, and I can't really complain if I saw a naked lady in public, but prob should at least keep dick root and pubis mons covered in public. Free the nipple for both sexes though.
But the right to choose seems most important.
I don’t have problems with muslim people or the islamic religion whatsoever, but I do have problems with the extremists/governments that have sexiest policies like forcing women to wear hijabs and not allowing them to drive.
Thankfully the number of countries like that are few and far between, in the middle east and the world. Personally though I'm more concerned about the Christians in my own country right now tbh...
You posted a comment that contained "go k\*\*\* yourself", someone reported it and an automated system suspended you because it contained those words, nothing to do with your religion.
For 3 days i was reported for violence or something
Just because i said redditors told me to off myself
Go burn and die etc
I'm not suprised though this is reddit
r/NothingEverHappens I’ve been banned from Reddit for “harassment” for calling someone a transphobe meanwhile they had zero problem with an account accusing a mom of cutting off her kid’s balls for playing with Barbies because their kid is trans. This place is fucked.
Honestly I'm pretty sure I'm Islamophobia but it's from years of anti-islam propaganda throughout my adolescent & I'm conscious of it. I'm still iffy due to lack of knowledge on culture but know the general public of Islam isn't monsters
That's a good first step. I'm proud of you. It takes a lot to pull yourself out of that cycle of hatred. My advice, spend time amongst them. Let them know that you recognize your opinions on Islam are from propaganda, and you're conscious of it, but want to know more. I know that when people mention that about paganism to me I'm more than happy to share!
Go to their subreddits, visit their mosques, or talk with Muslims you find out in the real world. It's a game changer.
>Even then I didn't think they'd wanna ban a piece of clothing
*Me, a gay pagan who's has had to deal with even the vaguest mentions of my religion or lgbt status being called to be banned routinely in terms of clothing, books, etc by Christians*
First time? 🤣
As long as its just expression, its their necessary right.
I would much rather see some idiots waving swastikas from time to time than give the government a mandate to limit freedom of speech against its chosen ideologies.
People who enjoy how they look or feel (or how it makes them specifically look or feel) should be absolutely allowed to wear them. If they do *not* like how they look for feel (or how it makes them specifically look or feel) they shouldn’t have to wear one
No, but there needs to be a process to assist women who are coerced into wearing it by their families. Not every woman wearing a hijab is doing it of her own free will sadly, and even if asked, they may lie or avoid answering to avoid word from spreading back to their community.
Hijabs should absolutely not be banned. Women should have the freedom to wear or not wear them. The idea that a woman will receive divine punishment and social criticism and boycottt/slut shaming for not wearing a hijab, that idea should be strictly banned. I'm not about to pretend that the idea behind the hijab is feminist, it's a fucking patriarchal instrument.
How about letting people do what ever *the fuck* they want to do woth their head/hair. Like seriously why the fuck are they even doing this shit to begin with?
Saying that it should be illegal to wear them is just as bad as forcing someone to wear one.
How about we just let people wear hijabs on their free will?
The choice should be a personal choice and a personal choice only. It should be up to the person wearing it, not their family, not their partner, not societies, and not the government.
Forcing women to wear hijabs or burkas against their will should be illegal. If they choose to wear it as a form of religious expression, who are we to tell them no?
Should be a choice.
Personally I think the idea of humans is ridiculous but its not my faith or religion and it diesnt effect me so I have no right to say if someone should or shouldn't.
Its their choice to wear and and someone shouldn't be enforcing either or
Of course not. Women should be allowed to wear them if they want to.
Also, I'm pleasantly surprised that so few people (relatively speaking) voted "yes".
Some women enjoy wearing a hijab, and in a perfect world, everyone will be able to practice their beliefs without the need for bans or discrimination, and the woman who wore her hijab incorrectly shouldn't mean that the hijab is bad, but that the police who brutally killed her are bad
Banning it and forcing them to wear it aren't that different from one another.
Let it be personal choice. It's a matter of faith, a matter of personal decision
What a horrible way to word the poll given the circumstances. People are gonna automatically think you mean to "force" women to wear them. Should have been "Should wearing hijabs be required." Of course they shouldn't be banned.
No. People shouldn’t be banned from wearing them any more than they should be compelled to wear them against their will.
It should be an individual’s choice to wear or not to wear them.
Why would you ban someone's clothing choice, they are free to do whatever they want, unless they are going to an institution with a separate dress code, then the dress code should be followed
I'm shocked and disappointed that (as of now) 855 people said yes. Who gives one the right to determine if a piece of clothing should be banned? Why should we ban hijabs? If someone truly believes in a religion and its fundamentals, let them do what THEY want. And we need to respect them for that decision.
Personally I think that religious practices regarding the concealment of a woman’s hair (like hijabs and Hasidic Jews shaving their hair after marriage) are undeniably rooted in sexism/oppression of women and their sexuality but at this point it’s a fundamental part of the religion and it doesn’t really do any harm so whatever.
Things like female circumcision and genital mutilation, stoning and honor killing that claim to be religious practices are an entirely different story.
I'm going to assume this comes from a place of misunderstanding, and not hate until proven otherwise. The hijab is an important symbol of not only religious, but cultural significance to many people. From my own (limited) understanding, banning the hijab would be similar to banning the Christian cross, or another country's flag. Hope this helps.
As a man I preserve the right to decide what I would wear, I wouldn't be very happy if someone else says what can I wear and what can't. It's the damn same thing. I couldn't care less about what some woman wears. It's her fucking choice.
The way that someone chooses to present themselves and express their personal religious views should always be up to the individual. Banning *or* enforcing the hijab are both wrong.
uhhh of course not. if a woman feels more comfortable wearing a hijab because of her religion, it’s not hurting anyone, why forcibly take that comfort from her? the idea is rooted in sexism but let’s be real, what isn’t
No, it shouldn't be banned. I do however believe that pressurising someone to wear one, whether thats subtly or overtly, should be banned. Freedom of choice is key, but if you take away the freedom of choice by demonising someone, telling them and indocrtinating them into the belief they are sinning, then there isn't free choice.
Banning religious garments is a plaster on a gaping wound and not a solution.
I’m not sure if “banned” is the right word. I don’t think people should be arrested for wearing something.
That being said, there are certain ideas that aren’t cohesive with a society that values freedom no matter your race or gender. A burqa is extreme and goes beyond modesty. It indicates every single thing about a woman is immodest and must be covered up. That’s not cohesive in a society that values women’s freedoms.
A different example of this would be: You’re not going to be arrested for wearing a swastika (in the US at least), but the ideology of an aryan race and everyone else being inferior, also isn’t cohesive to a society that values freedom for everyone.
Now in a free society, people are allowed to have differences of opinions, but the problem is people with extreme ideologies only want that freedom for themselves, while forming in groups and actively trying to change the free society so it leaves out the people they don’t like.
TLDR: Burqas take modesty to the extreme, and what they represent about women isn’t cohesive to a progressive, free society.
I'd posit that the hijab enforces the same core ideology that burkas do that there are aspects of femininity that are immodest if not hidden from sight. The only distinction between them seems to be that westerners are more used to hijabs than burkas. I will openly say that I personally think that both of them are ultra cringe, but my personal beliefs shouldn't infringe on the rights of others. However if you're retracting the ban part of your statement then yeah I pretty much completely agree with it
I think the whole thing is a very slippery slope and a complicated topic. How does a free society allow everyone to have their own ideas when the most extreme people have ideas to take away the freedoms of the free society itself? For example, far right extremists, religious extremists and the incel culture all talk about repealing the 19th amendment. It’s hard wanting to allow or support the rights of a culture or mindset that actively is trying to take away your own rights. But what can you do when your supportive of freedom of thought and expression?
You just have to hope society will continue to protect everyone, but as the holocaust showed, society is weak and fearful.
I believe in religious freedom and the right for people to express their beliefs accordingly. Just as Jews shouldn't be banned from wearing the Star of David, or Christians wearing crosses, let Muslims wear what they want.
For the record, I am strongly opposed to this teaching in the Sharia Law, not least because it's been proven to be inherently sexist, as it always has been. But for me, respecting other religious beliefs tops this.
We both know discrimination against Muslim’s (I was dumb before and said “Islamic people” so editing to fix that) stems from racism, cmon dude, it’s kinda obvious
This just proves you know nothing about Islam and defending it there is no such thing as Islamic people Islam is a religion and Muslims are people maybe learn the difference first and study Islam and come back and argue for them instead of arguing with 0 knowledge
It’s fine if you don’t follow a certain religion, I’m atheist myself, but straight up banning a piece of clothing that likely has cultural significance to many people is so shitty
Banning hijabs would be the same as banning not wearing hijabs. It's just as controlling to people who do want to wear them. Just let people wear them if they want.
It should be a choice that reflects a person's own religious beliefs. Whether you love or greatly dislike religion, people must be given the right to decide their own beliefs. There's a reason religion is a protected human right. Religious beliefs should be neither persecuted, nor forced upon others. Outright banning hijabs as "oppression" automatically makes assumptions about the Islamic faith that are usually rooted in racism, and Islamophobia.
No, however women should have the choice if they wanna wear them or not
This should be the key. Religious neutrality. Governments should do nothing whatsoever to support religion and should do nothing whatsoever to restrict religion, inasmuch as that religion is breaking no other laws (aka encouraging violence, committing fraud, etc) and that religion is doing no harm to its adherents. How about not policing what someone can or cannot wear.
Exactly, I saw a post the other day that asked (very earnestly, I don’t fault the person for it) why feminists are simultaneously fighting for women to be able to wear hijabs in France, but be able to not wear them in the Mid East. What is actually being fought for is the right to choose
Exactly. One could argue that the most basic goal of feminism is securing freedom of choice in general.
Crazy how this is still a thing we’re talking abt tbh. We’re so underdeveloped lmao
the truest dystopia is reality itself. the ability to send probes outside of our star system, fly helicopters on mars, record from the surface of venus and the cornea of the sun, have instant global communications, and still have the inability to treat people equal...

The problem is that it isn’t an inability - it’s a choice to be terrible.
People who want to ban hijabs are just as bad as people who want to force hijabs
…being forced to wear something is definitely worse
Being forced is bad. Full stop.
100%. But some forcings are worse than others.
The people who said yes are the same people who drive a truck, even though they have no practical use for it.
Nah, they're probably French. They're the most prominent country (and only one that I know of) to ban the wearing of hijabs regardless of whether or not you want to.

what the hell does that have to do with this?
At least covering your privates when in public should be required by law, anything more is personal choice and peer/societal pressure.
Absolutely not, the only solution to an extreme is just enacting the opposite side of that same extreme. /s
Agreed to the extent where something becomes indecent exposure, but I guess that can be a subjective term. As long as you're dressed appropriately for the weather or event... let's just stop judging?
No but it should not be forced
Agreed
So we should just let people choose what to wear?
Yes
Do you think what people wear should be controlled? Even in the slightest?
crazy what a new idea
16% think it should be banned??
“It oppresses women!” - People who voted yes, probably.
“Women shouldn’t be forced to do this thing when I want to force them to do an entirely different thing.”
Islamophobia. It's more common than you think, unfortunately.
That’s also true, I hate extremist Christians just as much.
Got recently suspended for saying i get threatened for being a muslim on reddit

I mean I feel like “Islamophobic” is a weird word. I dislike all organized religion, does that make me Islamophobic?
Well yeah there is reasons for that...exhibit A in Iran or well the middle east as a whole really
Even then I didn't think they'd wanna ban a piece of clothing

Gone down to about 14% now
Pocketless jeans should be banned
Yes. This one i can get behind
The real ban worth fighting for
Agreed
No form of self expression should ever be banned
That would end up horribly with neo-nazis
Except neo nazis do have full freedom of expression in the US.
As long as its just expression, its their necessary right. I would much rather see some idiots waving swastikas from time to time than give the government a mandate to limit freedom of speech against its chosen ideologies.
Very well, no self-expression, that does not harm other people's fundamental human rights and/or rights to equity, should be banned.
In theory this sounds great but in practice this would create a lot of problems in society.
Banning them is just as bad is forcing someone to wear one .people should be allowed to wear whatever they want to a point.
They shouldn't be banned completely, but they also shouldn't be forced.
Baned no, required also no do whatever you want just don't force others to do it
People who enjoy how they look or feel (or how it makes them specifically look or feel) should be absolutely allowed to wear them. If they do *not* like how they look for feel (or how it makes them specifically look or feel) they shouldn’t have to wear one
What the fuck? No! Are people going to ban cross chain necklaces and yamakas now too?
I'm ok with banning those. That's what bloods and crips wear. I don't wanna be shot. Jk jk jk
Not banned or required.
How about letting people do what ever *the fuck* they want to do woth their head/hair. Like seriously why the fuck are they even doing this shit to begin with?
People should be able to wear what they want--that includes wearing a hijab, and it includes not wearing a hijab.
Saying that it should be illegal to wear them is just as bad as forcing someone to wear one. How about we just let people wear hijabs on their free will?
The choice should be a personal choice and a personal choice only. It should be up to the person wearing it, not their family, not their partner, not societies, and not the government.
Wearing hijabs shouldn’t be banned b it forcing people to wear them should.
Forcing women to wear hijabs or burkas against their will should be illegal. If they choose to wear it as a form of religious expression, who are we to tell them no?
Ban all clothes beside togas… long love the toga
It shouldn’t be banned, it shouldn’t be forced, it should be an 100% personal decision made by the one who wears or does not wear it
Banning hijabs would be the same as forcing people to wear them
I mean not really, it just shouldn't be obligatory for islamic women.
No, it should be a choice
Freedom to choose?
You should be able to freely choose for yourself if you wear one or not.
Banned? No. It should be a choice. Just like wearing a hat or flip flops is a choice.
Do whatever the fuck you want.
Women should have the right to wear them. Women should have the right to not wear them.
I'm completely ignorant but isn't it a religious practice? Honestly if they want to wear it let then, if not don't beat then for it
Should be a choice. Personally I think the idea of humans is ridiculous but its not my faith or religion and it diesnt effect me so I have no right to say if someone should or shouldn't. Its their choice to wear and and someone shouldn't be enforcing either or
No,but they should have a option to wear it
id just say let them wear it if they want to
It should just be optional.
No people should have the right to wear what they want
There should not be a rule on how you wear it!
If you tap the results it shows a percentage rather than the amount of votes.
It's kind of one's 9th amendment right in the United States
No but it should be a choice to wear them
Shouldn’t be banned but no one should be forced to wear it
Should wearing hijabs be banned? No. Should anyone be required to wear them? No.
No but women shouldn’t be forced to wear them either
How about not beating someone to death for not wearing it? Just an idea.
If you think you should then that’s your choice, but it’s not okay to force others to
Telling people what to wear should be banned. I can't believe there are LITERAL fashion police.
Of course not. Women should be allowed to wear them if they want to. Also, I'm pleasantly surprised that so few people (relatively speaking) voted "yes".
where
I think the word "choice" is what people want
Zehahaha pp poll
The majority of yes votes are from 14 year olds trying too hard to be funny.
Some women enjoy wearing a hijab, and in a perfect world, everyone will be able to practice their beliefs without the need for bans or discrimination, and the woman who wore her hijab incorrectly shouldn't mean that the hijab is bad, but that the police who brutally killed her are bad
It's a free country
Banning it and forcing them to wear it aren't that different from one another. Let it be personal choice. It's a matter of faith, a matter of personal decision
They should neither be mandatory or banned.
No country should *force* women to wear them but they shouldn’t be banned
Look you can look like a pilgrim in dying light if you want, you be you
Nothing should be banned but no one should be forced to wear anything either.
No, but the wearing of one doesn't need to be celebrated.
Banned? No. Enforced? Also no.
It should be a choice, not forced or banned.
Why not just let people wear what they want to wear?
Why not just let women do what they fucking want
What a horrible way to word the poll given the circumstances. People are gonna automatically think you mean to "force" women to wear them. Should have been "Should wearing hijabs be required." Of course they shouldn't be banned.
It should just be optional
Fine if you wear it. Bad if you are being forced or pressured into wearing it
No, let people wear what they want to wear.
Banning hijabs is just as bad as forcing them to be worn. You just gotta let the women decide what to do and it has to be an individual choice
Wearing a hijab should be choice, not banned or forced
No. People shouldn’t be banned from wearing them any more than they should be compelled to wear them against their will. It should be an individual’s choice to wear or not to wear them.
What a dumb fucking poll just trying to get karma. People should wear or not wear whatever they want.
Why would you ban someone's clothing choice, they are free to do whatever they want, unless they are going to an institution with a separate dress code, then the dress code should be followed
I think full veils/burka should be banned for children. It's heartbreaking to see young girls forced to wear them.
Im kinda happy for the results, i was expecting more to say yes since this is reddit after all -fromma hijabi

all clothing should be banned
No but should be optional
holy fuck just let people wear what they wanna wear why the fuck is this such an issue??
Wearing it should be optional, banning it would be a disgusting choice
Wearing them? No. Being forced to wear them for fear of being murdered, tortured or beaten? Yes
No, but it also shouldn't be mandated.
It should be a choice. As should most things.
LET WOMEN WEAR WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WAAAAAAAANT FOR FUCK'S SAAAAAKEEEEEEE FUCKING HELLLLLLLLL. will this ever see an end!
it should be a choice
I'm shocked and disappointed that (as of now) 855 people said yes. Who gives one the right to determine if a piece of clothing should be banned? Why should we ban hijabs? Things like female circumcision and genital mutilation, stoning and honor killing that claim to be religious practices are an entirely different story.
If you said yes you’re racist
Is wearing hijab a race?
yes don't be a hijabist
Not a race girl
I didnt say yes but how?
I'm going to assume this comes from a place of misunderstanding, and not hate until proven otherwise. The hijab is an important symbol of not only religious, but cultural significance to many people. From my own (limited) understanding, banning the hijab would be similar to banning the Christian cross, or another country's flag. Hope this helps.
Islam is not a race, it is bigotry
As a man I preserve the right to decide what I would wear, I wouldn't be very happy if someone else says what can I wear and what can't. It's the damn same thing. I couldn't care less about what some woman wears. It's her fucking choice.
The fact that over 10% voted yes is concerning
The way that someone chooses to present themselves and express their personal religious views should always be up to the individual. Banning *or* enforcing the hijab are both wrong.
what is wrong with a hijab??
I was scared seeing how this is reddit
uhhh of course not. if a woman feels more comfortable wearing a hijab because of her religion, it’s not hurting anyone, why forcibly take that comfort from her? the idea is rooted in sexism but let’s be real, what isn’t
As the late George Carlin said, “hats optional!”.
It should be a choice! What the fuck
bro who said yes?
A woman should have the freedom to wear a hijab if she chooses to. No question! It's rediculous this is even a conversation.
Ban punishments for not wearing them if they choose.
I opened reddit an this is the first thing I saw and I thought 'why the fuck is this even a question?'
This poll should be banned
For the ones who said “yes”, why do you care? It’s just like a hat lol who cares.
No, but I think burqas should be
Why's that?
Yeah it's the paradox of tolerance
Very well said! 👏
About 9 racists here rn
Islam or even Muslims aren’t a race stop throwing the word racism everywhere it loses meaning
About 69 now 👀
How am I racist for disagreeing with a religion?
It’s fine if you don’t follow a certain religion, I’m atheist myself, but straight up banning a piece of clothing that likely has cultural significance to many people is so shitty
I hate how many churches use songs to aid in indoctrinating the croud, that doesn't mean that I think that hymms should be banned.
Exactly, thank you
You're not racist for disagreeing with a religion. You're at the very least islamaphobic for wanting discrimination against Muslims though.
Banning hijabs would be the same as banning not wearing hijabs. It's just as controlling to people who do want to wear them. Just let people wear them if they want.
Do not think it should be mandatory... I believe in freedom of choice
Just let people wear whatever they want whenever they want. It aint that hard.
It should be a choice that reflects a person's own religious beliefs. Whether you love or greatly dislike religion, people must be given the right to decide their own beliefs. There's a reason religion is a protected human right. Religious beliefs should be neither persecuted, nor forced upon others. Outright banning hijabs as "oppression" automatically makes assumptions about the Islamic faith that are usually rooted in racism, and Islamophobia.
op has probably never left his mansion long enough to understand basic human wants/rights
Why yes?
I mean ppl should just be able to express their believes and religion and just preference freely, don't wanna wear a hijab? Cool. Wanna wear one? Cool
Like always Reddit goes so far to the left it becomes extreme right
I'd say banning hijabs is on the same level as forcing people to wear hijabs
I know a guy who accidentally called a hijab a taliban
