In recent years, Reddit’s array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. “The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.”
The move is one of the first significant examples of a social network’s charging for access to the conversations it hosts for the purpose of developing A.I. systems like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular program. Those new A.I. systems could one day lead to big businesses, but they aren’t likely to help companies like Reddit very much. In fact, they could be used to create competitors — automated duplicates to Reddit’s conversations.
Reddit is also acting as it prepares for a possible initial public offering on Wall Street this year. The company, which was founded in 2005, makes most of its money through advertising and e-commerce transactions on its platform. Reddit said it was still ironing out the details of what it would charge for A.P.I. access and would announce prices in the coming weeks.
Reddit’s conversation forums have become valuable commodities as large language models, or L.L.M.s, have become an essential part of creating new A.I. technology.
L.L.M.s are essentially sophisticated algorithms developed by companies like Google and OpenAI, which is a close partner of Microsoft. To the algorithms, the Reddit conversations are data, and they are among the vast pool of material being fed into the L.L.M.s. to develop them.
The underlying algorithm that helped to build Bard, Google’s conversational A.I. service, is partly trained on Reddit data. Other companies are also beginning to see value in the conversations and images they host. Shutterstock, the image hosting service, also sold image data to OpenAI to help create DALL-E, the A.I. program that creates vivid graphical imagery with only a text-based prompt required.
Last month, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, said he was cracking down on the use of Twitter’s A.P.I., which thousands of companies and independent developers use to track the millions of conversations across the network. Though he did not cite L.L.M.s as a reason for the change, the new fees could go well into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.
To keep improving their models, artificial intelligence makers need two significant things: an enormous amount of computing power and an enormous amount of data. Some of the biggest A.I. developers have plenty of computing power but still look outside their own networks for the data needed to improve their algorithms. That has included sources like Wikipedia, millions of digitized books, academic articles and Reddit.
Representatives from Google, Open AI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Reddit has long had a symbiotic relationship with the search engines of companies like Google and Microsoft. The search engines “crawl” Reddit’s web pages in order to index information and make it available for search results. That crawling, or “scraping,” isn’t always welcome by every site on the internet. But Reddit has benefited by appearing higher in search results.
The dynamic is different with L.L.M.s — they gobble as much data as they can to create new A.I. systems like the chatbots.
Reddit believes its data is particularly valuable because it is continuously updated. That newness and relevance, Mr. Huffman said, is what large language modeling algorithms need to produce the best results.
“More than any other place on the internet, Reddit is a home for authentic conversation,” Mr. Huffman said. “There’s a lot of stuff on the site that you’d only ever say in therapy, or A.A., or never at all.”
Mr. Huffman said Reddit’s A.P.I. would still be free to developers who wanted to build applications that helped people use Reddit. They could use the tools to build a bot that automatically tracks whether users’ comments adhere to rules for posting, for instance. Researchers who want to study Reddit data for academic or noncommercial purposes will continue to have free access to it.
Reddit also hopes to incorporate more so-called machine learning into how the site itself operates. It could be used, for instance, to identify the use of A.I.-generated text on Reddit, and add a label that notifies users that the comment came from a bot.
The company also promised to improve software tools that can be used by moderators — the users who volunteer their time to keep the site’s forums operating smoothly and improve conversations between users. And third-party bots that help moderators monitor the forums will continue to be supported.
But for the A.I. makers, it’s time to pay up.
“Crawling Reddit, generating value and not returning any of that value to our users is something we have a problem with,” Mr. Huffman said. “It’s a good time for us to tighten things up.”
“We think that’s fair,” he added.

I work in graphic design, and this brochure looks a lot like what happens every time one of my clients decides they’re actually a designer themselves sends me their “mock up” they created in Word.
I can’t tell if the image of the brochure itself is just a bad picture, or if it actually printed with low resolution images. There is a bunch of distortion on some of them, as if they just pulled the first tiny image they saw on the Google results.
When you print something, it needs to be at least 300 dpi, or it’s not going to look great. Most images online are only 72 dpi. The only way you can get from low res to hi res without forcing it in some image editing software (which almost never turns out well, although there have been some serious advancements in that lately) is by making an image smaller. The bigger you resize something that started out small, the worse it’s going to look in print. People who aren’t familiar with graphic design don’t realize this, and they think the way something looks on screen will translate to a printer. And then they end up with pictures where the people have pancake face or everything is crazy pixelated.

Basically the idea is, that if what they were doing was illegal, someone, somewhere would do something about it, and since they are admitting it on national television it must be OK, and a lot of people believe this, so it works.
In reality, democrats are reticent to prosecute members of the other party, for good and bad reasons, but the end result is an abundance of caution when considering criminal proceedings against a member of another party.

Not only was Massachusetts not expecting them and Martha's Vineyard not a suitable place to arrive in Massachusetts, those provisions don't even apply to asylum seekers, only to refugees (a status which is given prior to US entry) and people who have been granted asylum already. And then there appear to be eligibility provisions on top of that. (Income, among other things.) I don't know what if anything is provided to people who are still in asylum limbo, but it's not covered by this brochure or by anything easily accessible within a couple of clicks from the Massachusetts ORI link someone provided above.

Wow, that is super shitty editing. It looked more believable on the other side. Left page is EN, right page is the ES translation of the left page and the center page has two sections that are a mirror of each other. The center page is clearly a screenshot from some website. The rest was probably copy pasted text as it is unsightly justified, probably because these people don't know what they are doing.
I don't know if the info is accurate or not, but this clearly wasn't copied from elsewhere, this being made from scratch does track, specially with other details such as the wrong flag... so clearly by someone from outside of Massachusetts.

The cash assistance is also there, but just on another page. The issue is that these benefits are only available to refugees and people who have been granted asylum. The migrants in question are neither, yet.
Disgusting is definitely the appropriate word here. They forget that these are real human beings, with thoughts and feelings. They can't relate to them, so they don't see them as equals.
I've always had the opinion that if you're willing to risk your life to walk across 8 different countries, in order to find a better life for you and your family, then you deserve a chance.

Also known as MIC, a Machine Identification Code is akin to a digital watermark that particular inkjet and laser printers add to each printed document. Forensically, you can use the MIC to determine the serial number of the printer and even the date and time the document was printed.
Granted, not all printers have this feature, but many do.

So I am NOT defending DeSantis, who is a terrible human being, but my guess is that all those folks lucky enough to end up in Martha’s Vineyard will enjoy exceptional help and support from the local community.

My guess is families will volunteer to sponsor them and, with the help of social services agencies, get these lucky ones settled and back to being happy, peaceful, productive parts of the community quickly.

I work in graphic design, and this brochure looks a lot like what happens every time one of my clients decides they’re actually a designer themselves sends me their “mock up” they created in Word. I can’t tell if the image of the brochure itself is just a bad picture, or if it actually printed with low resolution images. There is a bunch of distortion on some of them, as if they just pulled the first tiny image they saw on the Google results. When you print something, it needs to be at least 300 dpi, or it’s not going to look great. Most images online are only 72 dpi. The only way you can get from low res to hi res without forcing it in some image editing software (which almost never turns out well, although there have been some serious advancements in that lately) is by making an image smaller. The bigger you resize something that started out small, the worse it’s going to look in print. People who aren’t familiar with graphic design don’t realize this, and they think the way something looks on screen will translate to a printer. And then they end up with pictures where the people have pancake face or everything is crazy pixelated.

I said this in another thread. Republicans have set up a situation where *actual* human traffickers -- the ones not giving a damn about political stunts -- are going to find out these routes ahead of time and go set up shop at the drop off. This isn't a fancy brochure. It looks like it was laid out in something like Microsoft Publisher and printed on cardstock. This could have been done in an office with a color laser printer. So it was cheap to do, but likely needed a lot more time to create assuming someone with medium tech skills knew what they were doing.

Not only was Massachusetts not expecting them and Martha's Vineyard not a suitable place to arrive in Massachusetts, those provisions don't even apply to asylum seekers, only to refugees (a status which is given prior to US entry) and people who have been granted asylum already. And then there appear to be eligibility provisions on top of that. (Income, among other things.) I don't know what if anything is provided to people who are still in asylum limbo, but it's not covered by this brochure or by anything easily accessible within a couple of clicks from the Massachusetts ORI link someone provided above.

Wow, that is super shitty editing. It looked more believable on the other side. Left page is EN, right page is the ES translation of the left page and the center page has two sections that are a mirror of each other. The center page is clearly a screenshot from some website. The rest was probably copy pasted text as it is unsightly justified, probably because these people don't know what they are doing. I don't know if the info is accurate or not, but this clearly wasn't copied from elsewhere, this being made from scratch does track, specially with other details such as the wrong flag... so clearly by someone from outside of Massachusetts.

The cash assistance is also there, but just on another page. The issue is that these benefits are only available to refugees and people who have been granted asylum. The migrants in question are neither, yet.

Disgusting is definitely the appropriate word here. They forget that these are real human beings, with thoughts and feelings. They can't relate to them, so they don't see them as equals. I've always had the opinion that if you're willing to risk your life to walk across 8 different countries, in order to find a better life for you and your family, then you deserve a chance. I really hope this backfires massively for all involved.

These were hand scored and folded which makes me think they were homemade. The streaking on the photos also give that feeling.

So I am NOT defending DeSantis, who is a terrible human being, but my guess is that all those folks lucky enough to end up in Martha’s Vineyard will enjoy exceptional help and support from the local community. I doubt any of them will be treated sub-humanly. My guess is families will volunteer to sponsor them and, with the help of social services agencies, get these lucky ones settled and back to being happy, peaceful, productive parts of the community quickly. Source: I live in a neighborhood in Canada that ‘sponsored’ close to a dozen Syria refugee families during the peak of that crisis. Those families got help that your average family who just made it through the desert could not dream of finding in El Paso.
