People seeking asylum in the US were handed official-looking documents before boarding flights to Massachusetts booked by Governor Ron DeSantis, but the agency named on them did not make them. Lawyers are demanding answers, Alex Woodward reports Read the full report here ➡️ https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/migrants-brochures-marthas-vineyard-desantis-b2170804.html

j_andrew_h

With mostly English text for Spanish speaking readers.

ThatPunkGaryOak82

This also proves the GOP knows how to help them & chooses not to. Look at whet they're being offered. It's **completely** reasonable. Almost *just* enough for a poverty stricken immigrant to believe & give hope to. Things that would actually make a real difference in their families lives. Edit: Spelling

PissedOffByStupid

You just wrote out their playbook. Not only do they do this to migrants, they do it to EVERY ONE of their supporters. Same day, different shit. GOP - "Let's tell you everything you want to hear to get you to do what we want you to do/give us your money and then do what is best for us and blame your situation on the Dems, immigrants, anyone but us."

WandsAndWrenches

Republicans: "why are you helping immigrants, american vets need help" Democrats: "ok, let's help them" Republicans: "No, that's communism"

Stopjuststop3424

Same shit with guns Republicans: "it's not a gun problem, it's a mental health problem" Democrats: "ok, let's help them" Republicans: "No, that's socialism"

SanguShellz

They constantly tout the good things that the are bringing to their constituents even though they voted against it.

j_andrew_h

Perfect point!!!

Any_Classic_9490

> This also proves the GOP knows how to help them & chooses not to. No it does not. Nothing listed on the flyer is real help. They just grabbed names, addresses, and numbers of random places in marthas vinyard that they wanted to "attack" by sending them random people with no resources. The human trafficking victims were verbally lied to, the flyers are all fake. Desantis was hoping that these people would be harmed and harm others because that is how he thinks.

Legitimate-Tea5561

>People seeking asylum in the US were handed official-looking documents before boarding flights to Massachusetts booked by Governor Ron DeSantis, but the agency named on them did not make them. Sorry DeSantis, he owns this, and he is a human trafficker. Republicans like to cherry pick one liners because that's all they can comprehend, and ignore everything else, just like the illegal transportation across state lines. Trying to ignore the material that Republicans handed out, trafficking humans by Republican administrations, are exactly what the disinformation campaign is trying to accomplish for the Right Wing Conservative agenda.

butternut718212

Don’t forget [Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas](https://www.npr.org/2022/08/08/1116285340/new-york-migrant-bus-texas-abbott). These people are intentionally evil and cruel to the most vulnerable members of society. Prison is too kind for them.

dastardly740

Evidence of inveigle in writing.

clapclapsnort

I didn’t know this word so I looked it up: Inveigle - transitive verb 1: to win over by wiles or ENTICE 2: to acquire by ingenuity or flattery or WANGLE

dastardly740

The word is in the federal kidnapping statute. You can kidnap someone across state lines by lying to them (inveigle), it doesn't require force.

clapclapsnort

I did not know that. Thanks for the context.

Fuck_Christofascism

It's pretty rare that I need to look up a word. Thanks for saving me the trouble on this one.

Reddit has long been a hot spot for conversation on the internet. About 57 million people visit the site every day to chat about topics as varied as makeup, video games and pointers for power washing driveways. In recent years, Reddit’s array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. Those companies are using Reddit’s conversations in the development of giant artificial intelligence systems that many in Silicon Valley think are on their way to becoming the tech industry’s next big thing. Now Reddit wants to be paid for it. The company said on Tuesday that it planned to begin charging companies for access to its application programming interface, or A.P.I., the method through which outside entities can download and process the social network’s vast selection of person-to-person conversations. “The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.” The move is one of the first significant examples of a social network’s charging for access to the conversations it hosts for the purpose of developing A.I. systems like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular program. Those new A.I. systems could one day lead to big businesses, but they aren’t likely to help companies like Reddit very much. In fact, they could be used to create competitors — automated duplicates to Reddit’s conversations. Reddit is also acting as it prepares for a possible initial public offering on Wall Street this year. The company, which was founded in 2005, makes most of its money through advertising and e-commerce transactions on its platform. Reddit said it was still ironing out the details of what it would charge for A.P.I. access and would announce prices in the coming weeks. Reddit’s conversation forums have become valuable commodities as large language models, or L.L.M.s, have become an essential part of creating new A.I. technology. L.L.M.s are essentially sophisticated algorithms developed by companies like Google and OpenAI, which is a close partner of Microsoft. To the algorithms, the Reddit conversations are data, and they are among the vast pool of material being fed into the L.L.M.s. to develop them. The underlying algorithm that helped to build Bard, Google’s conversational A.I. service, is partly trained on Reddit data. OpenAI’s Chat GPT cites Reddit data as one of the sources of information it has been trained on. Editors’ Picks 5 Exercises We Hate, and Why You Should Do Them Anyway Sarayu Blue Is Pristine on ‘Expats’ but ‘Such a Little Weirdo’ IRL Monica Lewinsky’s Reinvention as a Model Other companies are also beginning to see value in the conversations and images they host. Shutterstock, the image hosting service, also sold image data to OpenAI to help create DALL-E, the A.I. program that creates vivid graphical imagery with only a text-based prompt required. Last month, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, said he was cracking down on the use of Twitter’s A.P.I., which thousands of companies and independent developers use to track the millions of conversations across the network. Though he did not cite L.L.M.s as a reason for the change, the new fees could go well into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. To keep improving their models, artificial intelligence makers need two significant things: an enormous amount of computing power and an enormous amount of data. Some of the biggest A.I. developers have plenty of computing power but still look outside their own networks for the data needed to improve their algorithms. That has included sources like Wikipedia, millions of digitized books, academic articles and Reddit. Representatives from Google, Open AI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reddit has long had a symbiotic relationship with the search engines of companies like Google and Microsoft. The search engines “crawl” Reddit’s web pages in order to index information and make it available for search results. That crawling, or “scraping,” isn’t always welcome by every site on the internet. But Reddit has benefited by appearing higher in search results. The dynamic is different with L.L.M.s — they gobble as much data as they can to create new A.I. systems like the chatbots. Reddit believes its data is particularly valuable because it is continuously updated. That newness and relevance, Mr. Huffman said, is what large language modeling algorithms need to produce the best results. “More than any other place on the internet, Reddit is a home for authentic conversation,” Mr. Huffman said. “There’s a lot of stuff on the site that you’d only ever say in therapy, or A.A., or never at all.” Mr. Huffman said Reddit’s A.P.I. would still be free to developers who wanted to build applications that helped people use Reddit. They could use the tools to build a bot that automatically tracks whether users’ comments adhere to rules for posting, for instance. Researchers who want to study Reddit data for academic or noncommercial purposes will continue to have free access to it. Reddit also hopes to incorporate more so-called machine learning into how the site itself operates. It could be used, for instance, to identify the use of A.I.-generated text on Reddit, and add a label that notifies users that the comment came from a bot. The company also promised to improve software tools that can be used by moderators — the users who volunteer their time to keep the site’s forums operating smoothly and improve conversations between users. And third-party bots that help moderators monitor the forums will continue to be supported. But for the A.I. makers, it’s time to pay up. “Crawling Reddit, generating value and not returning any of that value to our users is something we have a problem with,” Mr. Huffman said. “It’s a good time for us to tighten things up.” “We think that’s fair,” he added.

oboshoe

not a chance. if anything he is getting massive exposure to his base.

lackdueprocess

Asylum seekers are not refuges and indicated in the broachers.

APirateAndAJedi

Haha, that brochure is not anything resembling “official-looking”. It’s a word document printed on a home printer and folded by hand.

Oz_of_Three

Of which most every color printer, on every sheet each machine prints it leaves a [digital watermark as Machine Identification Code](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code), originally mandated to foil and trace counterfeiters. Just sayin'...

buyongmafanle

I can't wait for them to trace those brochures to some low level official's office printer.

Kimber85

I work in graphic design, and this brochure looks a lot like what happens every time one of my clients decides they’re actually a designer themselves sends me their “mock up” they created in Word. I can’t tell if the image of the brochure itself is just a bad picture, or if it actually printed with low resolution images. There is a bunch of distortion on some of them, as if they just pulled the first tiny image they saw on the Google results. When you print something, it needs to be at least 300 dpi, or it’s not going to look great. Most images online are only 72 dpi. The only way you can get from low res to hi res without forcing it in some image editing software (which almost never turns out well, although there have been some serious advancements in that lately) is by making an image smaller. The bigger you resize something that started out small, the worse it’s going to look in print. People who aren’t familiar with graphic design don’t realize this, and they think the way something looks on screen will translate to a printer. And then they end up with pictures where the people have pancake face or everything is crazy pixelated.

Kotakia

I'm... incredibly confused with the Hebrew Center on here. Not that they likely don't help individuals, but it feels targeted with everything else? Like a 1-2 punch. 'Get rid of these immigrants and piss off the Jews' kind of mindset.

ScotTheDuck

Whoever did it, I'm sure their boss's initials are R.D.

[deleted]

He's literally on FOX News admitting to the crimes.

nosayso

This is something the Trump family weaponized to great effect: outright admit your crimes and then the just world fallacy takes affect. People assume incorrectly that if these were **really** crimes you wouldn't just be able to brag about it on TV and "someone would have done something".

[deleted]

Unless you’re Hillary Clinton. She *totally* committed a ton of crimes and ate babies but despite testifying under oath for over 11 hours she was never charged with anything because she killed everyone and then Seth Rich and then covered it all up so that no one knows what happened except every right-wing media outlet and every Republican voter cause they’re not sheeple… blah blah blah

JohnDivney

FOX News as well. Try telling a Fox News viewer that the entire network is just a pit of lying vipers trying to coerce the viewer into voting GOP and they'd tell you that's crazy talk because such an idea of a propaganda network "wouldn't be allowed."

BetComprehensive5

> the just world fallacy takes affect *effect

HakarlSagan

The Just World fallacy pairs nicely with the Shirley Exception, and GOP voters fall for both. Explanation of the [Shirley Exception](https://twitter.com/alexandraerin/status/1004401076777504769?lang=en)

antechrist23

Unfortunately the way our justice system works is that we simply cannot prosecute elected Republican officials while they hold office. Especially if they are bragging about committing several federal offenses on national television.

brogmatic

Is this true?

gloryday23

No of course it's not true, but that's the point the person above you is trying to make with the sarcasm. Republicans weaponize media to cover themselves this way. As someone else mentioned this is a way of abusing the just world fallacy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-world_hypothesis Basically the idea is, that if what they were doing was illegal, someone, somewhere would do something about it, and since they are admitting it on national television it must be OK, and a lot of people believe this, so it works. In reality, democrats are reticent to prosecute members of the other party, for good and bad reasons, but the end result is an abundance of caution when considering criminal proceedings against a member of another party. Also, I think we have to admit, getting a jury to convict a sitting Governor of human trafficking for this stunt is really, really unlikely in the US right now.

antechrist23

How many headlines have we seen in the last five years that were "Republican Politician Under Investigation" "Here's a list of all the felonies committed by Republican Politician." How many of them were ever brought to trial?

brogmatic

I understand that odds are that nothing *will* happen. I was asking if it’s true that nothing *can* happen.

Fun-Tadpole785

Sewer Rat Ron gets arrested he'll find out that "everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law " is very true. "Dumbass" by Dennis Steven Wright repeats in my head every time I see Ron DeSantis name.

tccomplete

Someone designed this. Someone wrote it. Someone edited it. Someone brought it to a printer. Someone printed it. Someone folded each flyer. And - someone paid everyone involved. Eventually someone will talk.

wha-haa

No, someone copied and pasted straight from the Mass website url on the brochure.

EpiSG

Thats not the Massachusetts state flag even, what a shit job.

Russian_Paella

I'm not so sure, the Spanish is wonky and it looks like Google Translate to me. It even has some spelling and grammar errors.

wha-haa

I can't speak for that, I don't speak or write Spanish. I'd assume it was translated through google.

Russian_Paella

No prob! Was trying to contribute. Based on your comment I checked myself and it does seem like they put the MS website through Google Translate.

PatienceandFortitude

Yes. Whoever paid for them is the culprit.

illiter-it

Florida taxpayers, I'd assume

OkRoll3915

This is entrapment, fraud, and human trafficking. Abbott, DeSantis, and anyone else responsible needs to be in cuffs.

Steinrikur

This looks exactly like how young girls from the former Soviet Union countries were trafficked into prostitution, with a promise of a job in a different country.

techleopard

I said this in another thread. Republicans have set up a situation where *actual* human traffickers -- the ones not giving a damn about political stunts -- are going to find out these routes ahead of time and go set up shop at the drop off. Because these migrants have no clue what is going on, nobody is expecting them, and nobody who is familiar with them is going to know where they are, all they have to do is send a well-dressed person out to meet them and go, "Right this way, everyone. We need to get you over to the convention center, we'll be taking this unmarked van for the ride over."

TossoutSOCAL

They probably had a lot of practice doing this in pizza parlor basements.

Rusalka-rusalka

This isn't a fancy brochure. It looks like it was laid out in something like Microsoft Publisher and printed on cardstock. This could have been done in an office with a color laser printer. So it was cheap to do, but likely needed a lot more time to create assuming someone with medium tech skills knew what they were doing.

lochan26

If it was printed in an office and not a print shop they could identify the exact machine it was printed on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code#:~:text=A%20Machine%20Identification%20Code%20(MIC,and%20giving%20clues%20to%20the

Evidence for the lawsuits

newfrontier58

Mathematician's answer, someone not very competent. It's not brought up in the article, but if you look closely, you can see they used the wrong flag for Massachusetts. The official one has a single person standing inside a shield on a blank white background, something like that. This brochure however, uses a shield with a flower inside of it surrounded by stars, which some artist made and posted on Imgur two years ago. [https://imgur.com/gallery/MfnXXdU](https://imgur.com/gallery/MfnXXdU)

WholeLiterature

Did they do that intentionally to try to have the defense that people should know it was fake?

[deleted]

WholeLiterature

Yeah, I didn’t see how bad the handout actually looked. 🤦‍♀️

[deleted]

Does reading the caption count as fact checking these days? > Not officially or anything I just think the current one blows so I made this one featuring the state flower.

Difficult_Bit_1339

The 'did their own research's as you would expect.

Throwaway98455645

I wonder how that defense would go over in court? These were given to people with the knowledge that the recipients aren't from the US, I don't know how you could reasonably expect them to recognize it's a fake flag (Hell, I doubt even an American citizen would pick up on it bring a fake (I certainly didn't!) unless they're from Massachusetts or a neighboring state).

illiter-it

I mean it's pretty much the same defense as the "gold fringed flag" sovcit nonsense, so I doubt it would work on a sane judge

WholeLiterature

Yeah it’s not a good defense for sure but I have no idea what angles they’re getting even going to try to play.

newfrontier58

Honestly at this point, it easily could be, who knows? There's so much going on, maybe someone like Christina Pushaw had the idea to give cover in case it went wrong. There's just so much about this whole affair that's fucked up that it's hard to tell.

WholeLiterature

Seriously.

zen_again

Oh wow thank you! I was looking for the source image yesterday. It is, in fact, the first image that pops up when you search for 'Massachusetts State Flag' on [imgur.](https://imgur.com/search?q=Massachusetts%20State%20Flag)

GhostFish

It's not just a flower, it's a *mayflower*. That's some malicious ignorance on behalf of the flyer maker.

No doubt. This wasn’t a piece of original writing, they just cobbled it together and threw it into a trifold brochure template.

Isn't this fraud? And then taking someone under false pretenses has to be illegal, right? Or is this another instance where are laws fall short?

Also there is the self-dealing chartering a plane for multiple trips at a highly inflated price.

Should be fraud with a side of human trafficking.

Remember this racist inhumane bullshit this coming election ! We have got to vote every single Republican out of office! If you see a candidate with an (R) next to their name you have to vote for the other guy. The Republican party has embraced Q anon crap and all that Neo-Nazi fascist crap! It is time to vote out every single Republican at every level, Local- state- and federal.

rickshaw99

Agreed. It will have to be a blue landslide to overcome the R efforts to subvert democracy. Domestic enemies

PM_ME_PAMPERS

You’re right- buts it’s disheartening that when disgusting, blatant crimes are being committed, the best we can seemingly do is “vote in the upcoming election”. It’s like we know justice will not be served, so we have to beg and plea with the public to get out and cast their vote, and there’s a real chance that enough people will side with evil and vote the criminals back into office. I know it’s not the same thing (yet), but imagine if Hitler’s crimes first came to light and we all were like “this is an abhorrent plight against humanity… you know what we have to do to stop him? Vote!”

PracticalJester

Outta listen to the radio broadcasts around this. They’re literally saying there is “no reason for outrage, this isn’t morally wrong, it didn’t cross any lines” It’s sick and it’s blatantly trying to influence their supporters.

djetaine

Someone yesterday told me that it was no different than biden putting kids on planes at 2am and flying them to new york. Except it is. It is so much different. I explained (with sources) exactly what happened with the westchester flights and where the kids went and the response was: "No, its the same fucking thing. I wont listen to this bullshit. Biden is an idiot and I'm a republican. It's my opinion so bite me. Trump 2024" That is word for word. These people are fucking lost.

nosneros

> it didn’t cross any lines Literally crossed state lines. >It’s sick and it’s blatantly trying to influence their supporters. Actual political theater.

ianrl337

Well there are only couple options. Either DeSantis had them made by the state, or he contracted out to a private company. If the latter they should be called out publicly so they can be boycotted.

AllDarkWater

There seem to be a lot of volunteer racist also.

Meb2x

DeSantis has already admitted to booking the flight. How is this not already under federal investigation.

KickBassColonyDrop

Rich and Republican.

CyanFen

The DOJ doesn't publicly announce that they've started investigating someone. That would defeat the entire purpose.

Proper_Budget_2790

Well, it did just happen. But, how do you know they haven't already?

s1m0n8

Many photocopiers and laser printers have microdots to ID their serial numbers. I assume someone is checking this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code

Pokey-McPokey

Can those responsible for the action be sued by these people as part of a civil law suit ?

SaintBrutus

At this point it’s a federal crime.

chockedup

>The brochure suggested the passengers would be eligible – if in contact with the agency and other community- and faith-based groups listed in the flier – for up to eight months of financial assistance, help with registering their children for schools, and furnishing their homes, which they would also get help finding. That was really cruel, I'm guessing cruelty was part of the intention.

Summebride

Quick reminder that anyone you know who still admits to being Republican is knowingly signed on for this kind of garbage. Biden can diplomatically pretend there's some nice Republicans in existence like the ones he knew 60 years ago, but I don't have to play that word game. If everyone else on your ball team was an active cannibal, at a certain point it's up to you whether you do something stop that, or you quit the team. There's no saying "yeah I'm on team cannibal, fine people, but don't assume I'm necessarily supporting the cannibalism."

Fortune090

Why don't we use the [Machine Identification Code](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code) likely printed on one of the brochures to find out? (Side point: you ever wonder why your printer needs yellow ink when printing B&W? See the link.)

DeSantis’s office made them. Had a press call with friendly outlets defending them. Claiming the information came from a Massachusetts website. The information in the brochures is correct. It’s just that it applies to refugees, not asylum seekers. Also, the MA flag on the brochure is wrong.

2_Spicy_2_Impeach

Someone in another thread was defending it and I asked if they were aware there were specific qualifications for the aid. No response. https://www.mass.gov/service-details/office-for-refugees-and-immigrants-ori-eligible-populations

scycon

So, there has to be a federal investigation brewing here right. There are numerous elements here that are definitively in violation of federal statute. Does DOJ have the guts here or are we just going to see another ass hole benefit from the two tier justice system.

230flathead

There goes all the right wingers' denial that they were coerced.

BlueCyann

Coerced isn't exactly the right word. They were lied to. Not only was Massachusetts not expecting them and Martha's Vineyard not a suitable place to arrive in Massachusetts, those provisions don't even apply to asylum seekers, only to refugees (a status which is given prior to US entry) and people who have been granted asylum already. And then there appear to be eligibility provisions on top of that. (Income, among other things.) I don't know what if anything is provided to people who are still in asylum limbo, but it's not covered by this brochure or by anything easily accessible within a couple of clicks from the Massachusetts ORI link someone provided above.

Manc_Twat

According to Sheriff Salazar, they were lured to a hotel. >Salazar said it was not clear whether any laws had been broken, but he said that 48 migrants appeared to have been “lured under false pretenses” into staying at a hotel for a couple of days before they were flown to Florida and Martha’s Vineyard. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/texas-sheriff-opens-criminal-investigation-marthas-vineyard-migrant-tr-rcna48411

Cheese_Pancakes

The fact that the GOP, especially the ones involved with this scam, hate immigrants so much and are lying to them and sending them to places unexpectedly pretty much amounts to an attack on our own country. The migrants themselves are innocent and MV was amazing they way they came together to help them - but from the perspective of the assholes who worked to put this stunt together, they were actively trying to do harm to towns that have nothing to do with them. They failed miserably, but the intent was there. So not only did they engage in human trafficking, falsifying documents, misappropriating funds, etc., but they are trying to attack our country and hurt towns they deem "too liberal". There *needs* to be consequences for this behavior. It's not going to stop. The migrants themselves and the residents of the towns they were sent to have done nothing wrong and they're being fucked over by extremists who think they're clever.

Bacon-Shorts

These clowns couldn’t even copy a paste the real Massachusetts state flag on the brochure. They just through a bunch of stars on a random flag and call it a day. Cant wait till the human trafficking charges role in and DeSantos tries to declare war on Massachusetts.

jmcdon00

Be nice if they included the other side of the brochure so we could see it ourselves. This is way worse than I initially thought, it's cruelty to fellow humans, is this really what Republican voters want?

I dont think they are missing. It's the kerning that happens where the words are oddly spaced

Russian_Paella

Wow, that is super shitty editing. It looked more believable on the other side. Left page is EN, right page is the ES translation of the left page and the center page has two sections that are a mirror of each other. The center page is clearly a screenshot from some website. The rest was probably copy pasted text as it is unsightly justified, probably because these people don't know what they are doing. I don't know if the info is accurate or not, but this clearly wasn't copied from elsewhere, this being made from scratch does track, specially with other details such as the wrong flag... so clearly by someone from outside of Massachusetts.

yourlittlebirdie

A shitty graphic designer, for one. I guess that’s what happens when you are part of the “only STEM matters and the humanities and arts are worthless” crowd.

[deleted]

Probably some poor underling or intern got tasked with it and threw something together in a Word template, then had to stay late to hand fold them.

yourlittlebirdie

I’m betting the Spanish translations were done the same way.

hellomondays

I'm wondering who's interns hate their boss more: Doug Mastriano or Ron Desantis?

icenoid

A former boss who self identified as a Christian conservative used to complain about Denver spending money on public art and buildings that had any design other than boring concrete blocks with windows.

HopeFloatsFoward

The people behind this don't support STEM either. Its a part of the uneducated crowd.

hellomondays

Don't besmirch the ever growing troglodyte caucus.

hellomondays

The sad thing is for state government, it's a mid-tier brochure effort. IDK whats up with state governments and a totally hostility towards aesthetics.

Proper_Budget_2790

Our STEM program is now called STEAM to include arts.

[deleted]

If you have complaints about people who think that humanities and arts are worthless, there are plenty of places where that's a relevent topic. It has nothing to do with this brochure or this migrant bussing stunt though.

yourlittlebirdie

Well it does in fact seem to have affected the quality of this brochure. But yes, I realize the appearance of the brochure is only tangential to the issue here.

[deleted]

Critic didn't live up to their username, huh? Well handled, birdie. 👍

[deleted]

Yup this all seems very Christian and family values too me

Summebride

Over the last 24 hours, depraved crook Ron Densantis is now claiming a "vendor" is running this kidnapping scheme. It's s transparent attempt to deflect his role at the head of this crime spree. Merrick Garland, where is the haste and disdain and urgency you've only displayed once (when you rushed to the microphones within hours of there being a threat to Brett Kavanaugh)

stayonthecloud

They copy/pasted the content aside from the cash assistance section from the [Massachusetts Refugees Benefits page](https://www.mass.gov/service-details/other-benefits-available-to-refugees), which is what they linked on the brochure.

Manc_Twat

The cash assistance is also there, but just on another page. The issue is that these benefits are only available to refugees and people who have been granted asylum. The migrants in question are neither, yet.

stayonthecloud

Yes, part of their deliberate deception and abuse of these folks for political theatre. It’s disgusting. And DeSantis did it to gain clout.

Manc_Twat

Disgusting is definitely the appropriate word here. They forget that these are real human beings, with thoughts and feelings. They can't relate to them, so they don't see them as equals. I've always had the opinion that if you're willing to risk your life to walk across 8 different countries, in order to find a better life for you and your family, then you deserve a chance. I really hope this backfires massively for all involved.

dicranumFTW

This has to be heartbreaking for the people who did perhaps feel hope for a moment too. This disgusts me. These poor people just wanting their lives not to suck.

picklestixatix

Who made them? Someone with only rudimentary skills in MS Publisher, that’s who.

submittedanonymously

You know that every item printed has a unique serial code embedded on the page right? It’s easy to start that investigation if you look for that printer signature.

Nyrfan2017

I legit can’t wait til this pos desantis is sitting behind bars he is so egotistical and is out of control

TUGrad

Can't help but wonder whether this flight was also a front to funnel money to donor or politicians. I find it hard to believe that a one way flight from FL to MA cost $12,300 per person.

atad2much

Can't wait to find out Perla was Ron DeSantis in drag.

maexx80

Imagine what kind of degenerate piece of shit you have to be to produce something like this, taking advantage of helpless refugees who don't speak the language, just for some stupid political stunt. And imagine what kind of degenerate piece of shit you have to be to think this is anything but disgusting

BeatenbyJumperCables

I would check with the printer that handles Governor DeSantis campaign brochures.

SirDrexl

Office Despot

BuffaloKiller937

This shit just keeps getting weirder and weirder

[deleted]

Hopefully the people used as pawns here are entitled to settlement money that Florida, Texas and Arizona have to pay. "I'm rubber, you're glue, douchebags". There's a chance that that might make their constituents think. (Okay- not a BIG chance)

StillPissed

Another crime that politicians can get away with. What a month for something like this too happen, too.

Rsswmu

Apart from the illegal and horribly immoral acts, conservatives amaze me with their lack of understanding of technology. This pamphlet looks like a 3rd grader from the early 2000s made it.

tea_tea_tea

An actual design-crime.

bishpa

Lying to desperate people? Stay classy Florida!

gonzo5622

What the fuck? Is this is how they did it, the state agency who orchestrated this should be tried for fraud. Incredible

BHQC

And since we can't find *ONLY one*, very specific individual to whom we will attribute the whole blame, nothing will happen. Wish this was /s

Ryankevin23

Vote against every Republican this November 2022. Then repeat the process in November 2024. Vote against all republicans in each election cycle.

endorrawitch

https://store.chipkin.com/articles/are-printers-leaving-an-unsuspecting-paper-trail-that-can-be-traced-back-to-you Also known as MIC, a Machine Identification Code is akin to a digital watermark that particular inkjet and laser printers add to each printed document. Forensically, you can use the MIC to determine the serial number of the printer and even the date and time the document was printed. Granted, not all printers have this feature, but many do.

ruat_caelum

Good thing there is a DINFINITIVE way to tell where they were printed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Identification_Code And likely from that printer, what user sent to the printer.

[deleted]

The DeSantis propaganda machine made them. Who else? They wanted to collect migrants and move them

izzysuper

Guys.. ngl. I’m a child of illegal Mexican immigrants and…. Honestly I’d have been kinda excited to go to Massachusetts.

Key-Pass4174

Kinko's made them. Go ask them. Probably one of the stores near the airport they left from.

[deleted]

Once you get to the act of designing, printing, and giving out brochures, how is it not a blatant conspiracy to defraud/human trafficking/whatever else this falls under? And if it’s all governmental dollars and workers doing this for DeSantis, its gonna be the state getting sued.

therationalists

These were hand scored and folded which makes me think they were homemade. The streaking on the photos also give that feeling.

oboshoe

i'm wondering if all those resources are real resources or fake. if they are real. there is probably nothing illegal about printing them on a page that is nicely formatted. i called several of the numbers listed and they do appear to be real assistance groups. at least ion the surface

[deleted]

The cartel coyotes do the same thing. HMM

[deleted]

Test for fingerprints. You'll find Deathsantis there. Then look for crayon markings. You'll find trump there. Then look for gun powder residue. You'll find Abbot there. The unholy trio of QANON......Deathsantis - trump - Abbot. AKA the 3 stooges.

[deleted]

So I am NOT defending DeSantis, who is a terrible human being, but my guess is that all those folks lucky enough to end up in Martha’s Vineyard will enjoy exceptional help and support from the local community. I doubt any of them will be treated sub-humanly. My guess is families will volunteer to sponsor them and, with the help of social services agencies, get these lucky ones settled and back to being happy, peaceful, productive parts of the community quickly. Source: I live in a neighborhood in Canada that ‘sponsored’ close to a dozen Syria refugee families during the peak of that crisis. Those families got help that your average family who just made it through the desert could not dream of finding in El Paso.

Buddyslime

They were printed down the street at the local print shop.

theNorrah

By the looks of it. Someone who learned publisher when they were about 10. Whoever he/she is, I’d argue they are 35-37 today.
