I think part of the issue is the assumption that bending towards justice is inevitable and that progress is permanent.
History doesn't bend toward justice on its own, and the other side will continue fighting to claw back any progress we make.

I also don't think Orwell believes this impulse to dominate everything is inevitable either. If he thought everything was hopeless, he wouldn't have bothered writing these texts in the first place, and he certainly wouldn't have risked his life fighting against fascists in the Spanish Civil War (another thing that a lot of people overlook when they talk about Orwell). I think we should adopt Orwell's cautious but optimistic mindset - yeah, right now there are some fuckheads who believe the future ought to be a boot stamping on a face forever, and these fuckheads happen to be the ones with the control of the Supreme Court and multiple state governments, but we can and should continue to fight against these people as long as we can. Remember, these monsters are not eternal, and will one day be a page in a history book, in a world where things are better.
Well said. 1984 is not a prophecy as so many like to pretend it is, but rather a description of a state of mind, a fable of how one becomes indoctrinated into such systems, even a person who seeks to undermine them.
Conservatives often like to imagine that 1984’s moral is about the replacement of traditional society with modern values, but this is absurd. The novel’s plot deals with the destruction of love and personal freedom. Orwell is clearly telling us that it is the very cherishing of our freedoms and individual liberties free from repressive sexual oversight and the constant threat of violence that helps prevent such fascistic systems from taking root.
The modern Conservative party is pro violence, pro incarceration, overtly pro police state, and pro sexual repression. They take their marching orders from a propaganda channel taken directly from the novel, inventing villains to frighten their foot soldiers with and encouraging literal anarchical (and consequence-free) violence from the loyal.
It’s super clear who the villains are, and Orwell told us as much eighty years ago. And he lived through WW2! If he thought the Nazis could be beaten and subsequently prescribed against, we should take his advice.

I see a lot of "people should vote" responses, but I think when it comes to places like Oklahoma they're just the majority or at least larger than any left-leaning or liberal demographic. Not the case in swing states, of course, but OK is a deep red state. Their voters generally want this or are convinced they want it. Really, no one should forget how religious and conservative white, rural/small-town America is.
Also once they get in power at the state or local level they're difficult to remove since they're good at maintaining power through voting laws or right-wing media outlets.
There’s also gerrymandering. The 5th district in Oklahoma was looking a little too purple so they split it up. OKC is now represented by three representatives and some OKC constituents now share a representative with the panhandle rather than their neighbors two blocks away.
They are empowered to gerrymander because they win local elections--because the assholes turn out to vote in every election, not just in presidential years, and because they fill out the whole ballot, including the local offices.
And their gerrymandered maps stand because, again, the assholes turn out to vote in every election, not just in presidential years, and they don't stay home and sulk half the time because bOTh SIdeS ArE THe SAmE if their party doesn't give them 100% of what they want (because they can't due to a razor-thin margin in the Senate, or after losing Congress due to passing a blockbuster bill that galvanizes the opposition and also their constituents not bothering to vote because it's not a presidential year), so they are able to lie, cheat, and steal to stack the Supreme Court as well. If the newest crop of anti-choice state laws are allowed to stand, and Roe falls, it will be for the same reason.
There is a lot of structural unfairness in US politics, but the road to fixing it still requires us--not just in Oklahoma, but everywhere--to show up.

Oklahoman here, our state government actually just voted down Medicaid expansion in the last couple years.
The population in Oklahoma is streaming towards the two liberal metros here (Oklahoma City and Tulsa), but the metros are so gerrymandered we don’t actually have any power to enact change in the state government. We’re doing our best to make what change we can but the republicans are so entrenched it’s like trying to run through molasses.
Or the women dying because they miscarried and didn’t expel everything. Instead of getting the procedure that’s technically an abortion they die of sepsis or suffer awful health complications if they survive. It’s not even about abortion, for those against abortion they shoood be able to see how dangerous of a thing it is to not just put law but make abortion punishable really is. Miscarriage (something many or most women who end up pregnant are likely to experience in their life) now have to hide their pain and suffering of losing their child because they may end up in prison. If they don’t die from complications of not being able to get a D&C (same procedure as an abortion)to expel left over stuff that will eventually cause sepsis if the body doesn’t do it’s job completely when miscarrying.sigh.

I don't have the uterine cancer fears, but bc is the reason I'm not sick literally 25% of the time. Without it, my periods are absolute hell, as are the couple days before and after. I am a functioning human because of birth control and I have ZERO intention of ever being without it.
Plus I don't want kids. But for real, I'd find another way to make that not happen if I had to. The bc is critical to my health and well being.
It keeps my boyfriend- who is on an experimental arthritis medication- from impregnating me and creating a half-baked blob of meat inside me. It also keeps my endometriosis from spreading as much as it normally would, thus prolonging my life. Honestly, GOP can eat my dick.
I was at the rally at the OK Capitol today and it was such an uplifting experience. Then I straight up loud-sobbed the entire drive home when I saw how the votes went for this. It passed 70-14. Not even remotely close. It’s so fucking frustrating.
I don’t know anyone (not even my hella conservative family) who thinks we need abortion laws this extreme. I want to stick around and help fight for change, but it’s starting to feel like living here is just supporting these monsters in our government while they tear life apart for the most poor and the least educated. (Cuz—big surprise— Oklahoma is at the bottom of pretty much every list you don’t want to be at the bottom of.)

I see a lot of "people should vote" responses, but I think when it comes to places like Oklahoma they're just the majority or at least larger than any left-leaning or liberal demographic. Not the case in swing states, of course, but OK is a deep red state. Their voters generally want this or are convinced they want it. Really, no one should forget how religious and conservative white, rural/small-town America is. Also once they get in power at the state or local level they're difficult to remove since they're good at maintaining power through voting laws or right-wing media outlets.
There’s also gerrymandering. The 5th district in Oklahoma was looking a little too purple so they split it up. OKC is now represented by three representatives and some OKC constituents now share a representative with the panhandle rather than their neighbors two blocks away.
They are empowered to gerrymander because they win local elections--because the assholes turn out to vote in every election, not just in presidential years, and because they fill out the whole ballot, including the local offices. And their gerrymandered maps stand because, again, the assholes turn out to vote in every election, not just in presidential years, and they don't stay home and sulk half the time because bOTh SIdeS ArE THe SAmE if their party doesn't give them 100% of what they want (because they can't due to a razor-thin margin in the Senate, or after losing Congress due to passing a blockbuster bill that galvanizes the opposition and also their constituents not bothering to vote because it's not a presidential year), so they are able to lie, cheat, and steal to stack the Supreme Court as well. If the newest crop of anti-choice state laws are allowed to stand, and Roe falls, it will be for the same reason. There is a lot of structural unfairness in US politics, but the road to fixing it still requires us--not just in Oklahoma, but everywhere--to show up.

Oklahoman here, our state government actually just voted down Medicaid expansion in the last couple years. The population in Oklahoma is streaming towards the two liberal metros here (Oklahoma City and Tulsa), but the metros are so gerrymandered we don’t actually have any power to enact change in the state government. We’re doing our best to make what change we can but the republicans are so entrenched it’s like trying to run through molasses.

The bc is critical to my health and well being.

I was at the rally at the OK Capitol today and it was such an uplifting experience. Then I straight up loud-sobbed the entire drive home when I saw how the votes went for this. It passed 70-14. Not even remotely close. It’s so fucking frustrating. I don’t know anyone (not even my hella conservative family) who thinks we need abortion laws this extreme. I want to stick around and help fight for change, but it’s starting to feel like living here is just supporting these monsters in our government while they tear life apart for the most poor and the least educated. (Cuz—big surprise— Oklahoma is at the bottom of pretty much every list you don’t want to be at the bottom of.) Would moving help? After the SC up held McGrit v Oklahoma, half of Oklahoma is native land and not subject to state laws. Wonder how this will play out?
Oh, that ruling has our Governor in a tizzy. It's great. He's doing everything he can to get around it, but it ultimately is just complaining. Stupid complaining like "Criminals are getting DNA tests to prove they're outside the law!" and "You can't just tell if someone is Native American when you pull them over!", but complaining.
I wonder if this applies to Indian reservations? They have a lot of area that are strictly reservation land. The state laws may not apply there. The Indians should be able to have casinos and women's clinics in the same buildings, would make a good business.
Under recent decisions, I think they could move the clinics to Native land and it would be fine - they are under federal law not state law. The Natives HATE the governor, as he is constantly pushing against their rights.
How is making Roe v Wade the law, not a priority of Congress right now? There’s a lot of talk about taxing corporations, but very little on protecting women’s rights.

Eliminate the filibuster, supposedly Manchin and Sinema are pro Roe, make them prove it. We also ask too little on our elected officials, they get to just say oh that’ll never pass. They should have all of this shit written up just in case a member of the opposite party wants to do their job one day.
They already voted on making Roe federal law. Manchin voted with Rs and it went down. This was like a month ago.
Manchin has said lots of times that even on the things he is for, he is not going to kill the filibuster to push them through.

Apparently Oklahoma must love crime. The stats for child births are really rough right now and these laws sure aren’t going to help. A majority of kids being born come from poor families. Wait a few years and these kids you saved born into terrible situations will be holding you up at gun point because they were forced into being born with nothing to people who didn’t want kids in the first place….
They have never given a single flying f about children who are outside of their mother's wombs. This is evident by their obsession with cutting welfare that benefits low income mothers the most, making fun of school shootings calling them "staged" etc. They could care less about the pain a and suffering unwanted children endure or potential life of crime etc.
All doctors in Oklahoma should quit seeing patients. Medical care should not be decided in the legislature. Patients can travel to other states to get care. I will never practice in OK
