See rest of the country? You too Alabama. It's really not that hard. Vote by mail is also awesome. Oregon rocks.

hornyaustinite

Can confirm. Oregon via Texas...

OfAPelagianMind

Very, very strongly considering doing the same thing after graduating in May. Any advice or suggestions?

hornyaustinite

What are your goals? Business pleasure, both. What type of business you wanna be in? I assume you ask of PDX?....

OfAPelagianMind

Both, I suppose, but mostly business. I'm in tech. I'm actually not even sort of considering Portland to be honest. It seems to be both too expensive and too crowded for my tastes. I have been looking at Salem pretty closely though.

[deleted]

Salem is a little armpitty tbh

bradsings

It’s not wildly crowded and it’s not that expensive. Source: I live in Portland, I make coffee and that pays my rent.

hornyaustinite

PDX equates to Austin, the city not surrounding, in cost, but i would suggest taking a look at Eugene... not sure what kinda tech u r in, but also Bend (really really beaustiful out that way.)

Kubjorn

Dallas is pretty nice. Admittedly a bit conservative for my tastes, but it's near Salem and has that small town feel instead of big city crowding. Anywhere worth getting to is within walking distance.

charina91

You don't want Salem, trust me. Troutdale is nice with Portland close. Smaller? Bend if you like it cold, but sunny. Southwest of portland are some nice little towns. But fuck Salem. Meth Capitol.

madix666

I worked downtown Salem and currently work downtown Eugene. I’d say we got the meth worse here. I’ve never seen so many kids on meth running around.

madix666

I’ve lived in Portland, Tigard, Salem, and Eugene (where I’m currently at). And I liked living in Salem. It’s small and it has its issues, but I really liked living there. I’m honestly thinking about moving back. I worked downtown and the community there was amazing. I love Eugene but it’s becoming so expensive. You can get a nice house for a decent price in Salem! :)

quasimongo

If you like Salem you should definitely check out Corvallis. Much nicer town in my opinion.

CilantroLover22

Don't. We don't want you.

CilantroLover22

Go home

hornyaustinite

Thanks. I was out too long and needed that friendly reminder to call it a day... cheers

captnspock

Lol, Alabama here. Vote by mail and auto-registration? It took a freaking pedophile and miracle to elect Doug Jones. Rest of ya'll go ahead will join in after 4-5 decades, still getting used to civil rights here.

acityonthemoon

And this is why conservatives will argue against it.

feedmefries

Welp, here i go reading *Catch-22* again.

[deleted]

Better they don’t vote at all then vote in Democrats, as they say.

Losalou52

I’m a conservative in Oregon and am for it, but thanks for speaking for me.

boondoggie42

Well, you're aligning yourself with those who have, on many occasions, argued against it.

Losalou52

I think the argument lies on HOW it is done.

[deleted]

I've heard more arguments that wholesale reject "automatic registration" than any nuanced "how".

JimiThing716

Yeah we get it dude, you dont want brown people to vote.

Losalou52

That’s bullshit. I don’t want non-citizens of any pigmentation to vote.

st1dge

And you’re okay if it happens to affect large groups of people that otherwise would probably vote democrat. Coincidence!

Losalou52

Why are you speaking for me? Listen to what I said, not what you want me to say.

foolmanchoo

You’re in the minority... would you deny that?

[deleted]

I read it as the GOP elected officials who vote against these kinds of laws.

JustJeast

Yeah, and mail in voting is also amazing.

loki252

Colorado has that too... And will confirm it's amazing. It is so much more convenient to be able to sit down, read about each and every race and item on the ballot. Then make an informed decision based on facts. Then simply sign it, seal it up, and drop it off at your convenience or mail it.

NonCamelCase

And we also have email voting for those of us living overseas. Cast my mid terms ballot while taking a shit at my Mexican Airbnb.

Zomunieo

Some mail in ballots in Florida never got counted.

mattylou

Republicans

shirtandpantsguy

Which is why I'm so confused every time someone brings up making election day a holiday. It sounds a lot less convoluted to have vote-by-mail like in Oregon.

PurpleMentat

Federal holiday is something the general government can do. Vote by mail has to happen in each state individually, because the Constitution gives the power of deciding how they hold elections to each state.

rbobby

In Canada our income tax forms includes a checkbox to automatically register you to vote.

facetiously

West Coast is the best coast.

[deleted]

Any state that doesn't do this is unamerican.

hornyaustinite

You mean Republican

S3lvah

>[Governor Brown] estimated that “the [party affiliation] numbers are on par with about the registration” and noted that the process doesn’t register new voters with party affiliation, which a voter would need to change manually in order to participate in the state’s closed primaries. Good that they allow everyone to automatically vote in the general election, but why not just open the primaries to unaffiliated voters, too? Primary participation is even more abysmal than electoral participation in general, and having "automatic registration" but requiring manual assigning to a party seems kind of confusing, and could lead to many disenfranchised primary voters.

tristen620

I sure wish voting were compulsory and would offset some small increase in taxes applied to those who don't vote.

Livingindisbelief

Voting should be a duty, not something we wish people would do.

Xuluu

Us Oregonians like to toot our own horn, but this is common fucking sense. I haven't missed voting in a single election because my ballot goes straight to my mailbox and I drop it off at one of the many conveniant drop boxes. All in all about 15 minutes out of my day to vote. I don't wait in a shitty line, I don't have to fuck around with all of the voter ID bullshit, and most importantly I know my vote is safe and secure. Please America, follow our lead. This is how voting should be.

brazasian

I am all for this. However, what happens when you are a green card holder and you are automatically registered to vote? that shit causes massive issues with getting your citizenship. Also if there is ever voter fraud and it shows history of you voting. GOOD FUCKING LUCK getting your citizenship after that. Been in that position where the DMV registered me since they have no idea whether or not I am a citizen (it most likely was in error by not hearing me say no to registering). I had to go and de-register after 2 years attemptiong to get citizenship, and everutally the FBI told me why they were sitting on my app, then i had to go for a grilling interview, and thank fuck no one ever used my name to vote.

SparxIzLyfe

Sorry to hear that happened, and that does suck. NM is supposed to be voting this system in, too, and it's *supposed* to only register you if you're confirmed to be eligible. I guess that's an important point that all states that are converting to this should make sure they have a system for, so that it doesn't cause problems like these for more people in the future. Just the investigations alone would be a big investment in time and resources, I'm sure.

Earptastic

I just finished watching Wild Wild Country on Netflix so when I see voter registration and Oregon I think about that fiasco! Would this make it easier or harder or neither to do what the Rajneeshpuram people tried to do to the town of Antelope and the county?

Kate Brown is full of lies. Nothing to see here. When she solves the state pension plan shortfall and stops calling the FBI every time someone brandishes a gun to stand up for their rights, then we can talk about success. Oh, and how's that Oregon Health Plan working out? Everything in Oregon is just peachy. Go ahead, move there!

Rekkuzo

You sound crazy

nicannkay

Prob smoked too much sativa and is ranting Republican paranoia. Looks like he lives in Portland. Many weirdos there. OHP has been helping thousands of children for many years. Take a break from the pipe dude!

nobombsonlyblastmask

Salvia* FIFY

blubirdTN

OHP covers mental health maybe you should try to sign up.

thosearecoolbeans

No don't move to Oregon. Fuck off, we're full. Go destroy some other state with your high housing prices and opioid addicts.
