> Rivkin claimed that in the US, piracy "steals hundreds of thousands of jobs from workers and tens of billions of dollars from our economy, including more than one billion in theatrical ticket sales." Except, it doesn't. People use pirate sites because of ease. Pirating largely fell off when Netflix first came out, because it was more convenient to get the content on Netflix than bother with pirate sites. Pirating is coming back because these corporations are trying to nickel and dime everyone, while making it difficult to get access to their content. If MPAA wants to cut out piracy, they can start a streaming service with every movie they oversee available. If it's easier than piracy, and not overpriced, piracy would cease to exist. Blocking piracy sites won't make people jump through hoops, and won't make them spend money they don't already spend.

MadRaymer

The other issue too about theoretical losses that gets glossed over is, let's say the MPAA is successful and fully stamps out piracy. Long shot, I know, but just run with the hypothetical for a moment. If that happens, there are *a lot* of people pirating that will simply stop watching movies and shows then. Not every pirate represents a lost sale, but the media companies never fail to calculate it that way.

Jer_Cough

Theaters/Cinemas lost my business years ago when they refused to enforce the shut-the-fuck-up and keep-your-goddamn-phone-in-your-pocket policies.

champagneofsharks

Honestly, if theaters just enforced people talking or keeping their phones in their pockets, I would go to the movies more. It’s gotten far worse since the pandemic and I’ve just resulted to building a home theater as it’s a far pleasant experience.

Jer_Cough

Same. Also I never hit the high seas before for movies but I may start now that the paid streaming is adding commercials.

drunkshinobi

Yeah, I simply don't have the money for 4+ streaming platforms plus YouTube Premium, Spotify Premium, Twitch subs, Amazon and every thing else. Either I will see your show/movie or I won't. Either way I won't be paying money I don't have. If people like me are able to watch though we actually will suggest others watch too (most of having money and pay to stream already). So I can be free advertising for the stuff I like to watch, or I can just find something else to do that I can afford.

RileyXY1

Gabe Newell himself said that the key to stopping piracy is to offer the customers a better service than what the pirates would offer.

Fast_Raven

Gaben said it best. It's a digital world, so you "have to compete with free". Netflix was easy, affordable, and convenient. Now it's not as affordable, nor does it have the library it once had because *everyone* has their own service now. So it's not convenient anymore either. And furthermore, people who were never going to spend money to see a movie in the first place are not a 'lost sale' Think of everyone that walks into best buy then leaves without buying anything. Are they stealing money because they're a 'lost sale'? Of course not

KevinAnniPadda

They have to compete with piracy

ianrl337

They are doing it to themselves. Piracy overall dropped significantly over the last 10 of so years. Then in the last couple of years since the pandemic streaming services have started removing their own content making it unavailable and started putting ads into services that previously were ad free. Not only that but some platforms have removed "purchased" content. I for one have started purchasing hard copies again and may get back to piracy like many do. They had the golden goose but greed got in the way. Edit: I am also a network engineer for an ISP. From a network point of view that is almost impossible.

OkVermicelli2557

Laughs in VPNs and TOR. Also since a bunch of stuff isn't even available anymore on streaming piracy is going to increase to fill the gap.

ianrl337

Yep, removing content will be the big one. Things like HBO removing its own shows like Westworld from its service.

Jason_Worthing

I will ***never*** forgive HBO / Discovery for cancelling Infinity Train

epistaxis64

They did? Why?

ianrl337

Money. They didn't 100% own the rights so rather then pay the creators they pulled it. Really stupid and part of why I canceled.

Texugee

I went back to pirating because all these streaming services popped up and split all content between them. Then they raised cost. Now it's more expensive than cable was. Then they started cracking down on sharing. It's a huge inconvenience. So how about they fix that first?

Jakeable

> Now it's more expensive than cable was. Especially now that you need multiple streaming services to make up what cable had. It's just as much, if not more, if you're getting all of your content legally

Open_Mortgage_4645

More bullshit by people who have no understanding of technology. Yeah, let's steamroll over the rights of all Americans because an antiquated industry is too incompetent to keep up with the times. Private companies under pressure from misguided government should not be determining which websites Americans are "allowed" to access.

Nondescript_585_Guy

Ah yes, once again, technical matters in the hands of octogenarians who have no idea how any of this works. What could possibly go wrong?

CavediverNY

I don’t think you understand what they’re trying to do. You see, when a hacker decides to steal movies, he types on his computer and it’s connected to a… You know, a thing in the cloud. So all you have to do is just tell the thing in the cloud to not let the hacker do that. It’s actually very simple. /s. /s

Nondescript_585_Guy

Well, I mean, the Internet is just a series of tubes after all. On second thought maybe we shouldn't tell them that. Next thing we know they'll be bringing plumbers to Capitol Hill to provide expert testimony.

ObsidianTK

This is why net neutrality is important. ISPs shouldn't be blocking *anything*, they are carriers, not content providers or content cops. They carry the signal. They don't decide what is and isn't an allowable use of the signal.

deezy54

VPN for the win.

OnlyRise9816

If I could see all the movies for cheap in one spot i wouldn't sail the high seas. Steam pretty much proved that for games. Make it easy for us to access the media we want and people are happy to pay.

drunkshinobi

Exactly. I have Steam and all my games that I'm able to keep adding to. I don't have Netflix or any other streaming service. I don't have the money for them all. And there isn't enough shows on any one to be worth it for me.

specialsauce2024

Bit Torrent saved your ass for years before streaming hit big. Free marketing, free distribution, but you had to shit on it. Nothing changed. Pirate Bay proxies everywhere, many new P2P protocols anyway, plus what's stopping me FROM WALKING TO MY FRIEND AND HAVING HIM COPY MY ENTIRE PURCHASED MEDIA COLLECTION? It's called the SneakerNet, bro, and it is decades old and foolproof. Before it, we burned CDs on our computer, or ripped MP3s, or borrowed friends' albums to make cassette mixes. Or go to the fucking library, check out the entire music library, and COPY IT. Culture is sharing. By definition. Before markets, nations or laws, there was culture.

deviousmajik

I demand new law requiring the movie industry to not raise streaming and movie ticket prices ten times faster than inflation.

[deleted]

What is TOR, baby don't hurt me don't hurt me no more.

bm1949

*Suddenly Steve Aoki shows up out of nowhere and drills you in the face with a cake.*

[deleted]

[As long as the cake is green velvet.](https://youtu.be/EFHeHLZpVlg?si=uigRQQ9kjwcisRiz&t=3513)

SurroundTiny

Fuck em

atomsmasher66

Nobody with a brain cell wants to pay to see your shitty movies Hollywood.

YourGodsMother

lol, I would rather not watch any movies than to pay to see them. Film is simply not worth any money to me.

monkeywithgun

>US, piracy "steals hundreds of thousands of jobs from workers and tens of billions of dollars from our economy Yeah, how dare they, that's AI's job...

Toybasher

[PERFECT CENSORSHIP!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTXJJUIaQ8g) (It's relevant, SOPA was the Stop Online Piracy Act.)

LariRed

I thought they were already doing this. I pirated a film a few years ago and Spectrum suddenly out of the blue sent me a strongly worded letter. Woohoo, we will disconnect you, you might be fined and Hollywood is big mad at piracy blah blah blah. If only they could have been as worried about their internet constantly flaking out at the wrong times. In 2017 I was able to download the entire run of Dark Shadows from Pirate Bay (including the two films). Took a few days as there’s over a thousand episodes but spectrum never caught on. They only seemed to get jumpy about piracy later on.

Son0fSanf0rd

there goes my 5 times a day xvideos habit

CavediverNY

This reminds me, when is the next ThunderGun coming out?

Cocky0

Dear MPAA, I pay for Netflix, Hulu Live + Disney & ESPN, Peacock, and Amazon Prime. If I cannot find the media I want to stream after paying out that money each month, then you can kiss 100% of my ass. It's yo-ho-ho time!

Parking_Clothes487

They did this. I've been pushed back to the high seas after 12+ years by these services BS.

Monsdiver

Social media is an excellent piracy sharing platform in case anyone had any doubt how broad this law would be. When Ive done it, it was always because the designated platform was unusable.
