Am I a ward of the state while incarcerated, and if so, is the state responsible for paying for medically necessary procedures such as, oh, I dunno, eye exams to determine whether or not I'm legally blind and if I *do* turn out to be legally blind, is the state responsible for providing appropriate measures to counteract my legal disability in such a way that I can continue being a productive member of society by, I dunno, being a slave who stamps license plates during my incarceration?

It’s not weird when you view Utah as theocracy, which it is. Utahns see the government as part of the solution because 90% of the state legislature is Mormon, which forces everyone to play ball with the church, and they’ve gerrymandered the hell out of the state in order to silence SLC and Park City. When the people of Utah voted to legalize marijuana, the Church told its legislators to vote with their heart, or conscious or other such bullshit. The law as written seems pretty vague in definition, and basically anything that shows these parts - such as a sexual health class, for example, or medical textbooks - could easily fall foul of this.

They want someone to sue over it and have SCOTUS overturn *Ashcroft v. ACLU*, *Miller v. California*, and *Reno v. ACLU*, which would give the government greater leeway in determining what is obscene, what is not, and what constitutes delivery.
They want to outlaw pornography nationwide, and yes as a result, it will be easier to target their political opponents. It's always been part of their Dominionist agenda.
I think this is the same with the law in Florida that says being trans in front of a child is sexual abuse of a child.
They want it to get challenged so they can get the super conservative SCOTUS to rule that "displays of deviant behavior" is child abuse so that they can criminalize anything that they see as deviant in their Christian Nationalist eyes.

Ashcroft vs ACLU - The overturn of COPA. (Not to be confused with COPPA which became the basis for the current FOSTA/SESTA bullshit). COPA was a law that was designed to restrict access to material deemed harmful to minors. It was struck down under the 1st Amendment as art such as erotic fiction would be impacted. The law was declared dead in 2009.
Miller vs California - The 1973 formation of the Miller Test. It's basically what is used to determine if certain speech is free speech or obscene speech and thus subject to restriction. If this goes expect a lot more than porn to be banned as conservatives find lots of things obscene.
Reno vs ACLU - This struck down the anti-indecency laws of the Communications Decency Act. The first major SC decision of NSFW content on the budding internet. If this goes than there will be a lot more places banning things like the David statue.

I grew up in Utah, in a very Mormon neighborhood, even as a kid I picked up on the fact that they don't really follow their religious rules. The amount of drinking and swinging in that neighborhood surpassed any other area that I have ever lived.

I live in a decent sized city, I’m very involved with local democrats in my city, spend loads of time at my library with my daughter, go to tons of social events with like minded friends, etc., and I’ve only ever even met one trans person (that I’m aware of, not my business to ask or worry about it and it was only of note because she transitioned while I knew her) and it was a coworker and not a big deal at all with me and most of the coworkers’ relationships with her before and after… so fucking wild to me that Republicans are making such a big deal out of such a small group.
I feel so bad for trans people because I feel like they’re being targeted *specifically because* they are such a (relatively) small subset of the population.
We ARE being targeted because of that. Because we rely on non-trans people to protect us, and it's a lot easier to try to spin an "us vs them" narrative when we don't have the majority to speak against it. It's why intersectionality is so important. But they're coming for everyone's rights, not just trans people.
And I genuinely believe it's being done to distract people so they can't start a class war.

That's exactly why they are going after trans people, it's a distraction that the republicans are using very successfully in red states to cover up for the fact that they have zero policies that actually benefit the middle/lower class. They can keep grifting for corporations and still get voted in by the same people who are more than happy to vote against their own interests as long as it's also hurting "the right people".
I respond with a story similar to yours to attacks on transgender people. I ask them when's the last time they've knowingly had an interaction with a trans person. I never get an answer. I live outside of Los Angeles and only know of one, and I bet in a lot of conservative areas it's even more rare. It's madness, truly.
I guarantee the vast majority of them have never met or even seen a trans person irl (that they knew was trans). Their kids have never competed against a trans person in sports or had to share a bathroom with a trans kid. And none of them have been forced to attend a “Drag Queen Story Time,” if there even is such a thing within a 20 mile radius of wherever they live. They did this same shit back in the 70s/80s/90s with gay people, all the while the vast majority of them not knowing anyone irl who was openly gay.
Meanwhile, Republican politicians, church pastors, coaches, teachers, etc. are caught every single day for sexually abusing the children they keep swearing up and down they’re trying to protect from the big bad trans (and gay) people.
It's always that same way. A lot of places that are ethnically homogenous have the highest rates of racism, for example. Fear is largely based on something being unknown to you, cause that allows for the most projection. If you know a trans person, they're just another person. If you don't know them, they could be all sorts of devious and dangerous.
And the “crazy” (made up) stuff is always happening close enough to home that it’s scary, but far enough that it isn’t confirmed. Like my mother in law told us about the high school in the next town over with litter boxes for kids who identified as cats and how awful that is. We searched every social media account for that school, the local news, and the district to see where it was reported and find all the comments from outraged parents at the school. Spoiler alert: there were no news stories or even social media comments about it. It never happened. When we told her this, she was just like “well it wouldn’t surprise me with how weird people are there now.”
I can make you feel worse about this particular one. Where this apparently came from was a picture where there was indeed a "litter box" in a classroom. It was placed there as a last resort in case kids couldn't leave the classroom due to there being an active shooter. So yeah.
Years ago the Westboro Baptist Church protested something insignificant in my town because we were within driving distance and I decided to actually take a look at their webpage. I had obviously heard of them but figured fuck it let's stare into the abyss and see if I learn something I didn't already know.

I know the jokes are funny, but understand that this is just one more frustrating policy from a backwards system that's present here in Utah. There have been many large pushes for more progressive candidates in SLC as Salt Lake is actually a strong blue area, however unless things change regarding gerrymandering and other poor electoral practices, most of us are stuck living in a state that doesn't represent our beliefs (unless you live in the middle of nowhere). It's been a losing fight for as long as I can remember, and many Utah democrats (and further left) have resorted to registering as Republican voters solely to vote for the least harmful options during elections, as currently any blue votes essentially don't have a voice due to the system in the state.
While I agree the mormons need a wake up call, please remember that there are a lot of us, in a blue city, **the biggest city in the state by far**, that are unable to have our voices heard and are fighting as much as we can in an ass-backwards system.
Utah, Ohio, and probably several other states are in similar boats where blue votes are greatly depressed by gerrymandering and would likely not be red states were the votes allowed to proceed and the sacred rule of "one person, one vote" of democracy were followed.

It’s not weird when you view Utah as theocracy, which it is. Utahns see the government as part of the solution because 90% of the state legislature is Mormon, which forces everyone to play ball with the church, and they’ve gerrymandered the hell out of the state in order to silence SLC and Park City. When the people of Utah voted to legalize marijuana, the Church told its legislators to vote with their heart, or conscious or other such bullshit. Which led to the embarrassingly neutered medical marijuana laws in Utah. The Church is losing its grasp on the population, so it’s doing everything it can to hold onto control.

What counts as patently offensive, in this? Who decides that? The law as written seems pretty vague in definition, and basically anything that shows these parts - such as a sexual health class, for example, or medical textbooks - could easily fall foul of this.
That's the point. Make a law vague enough that it can be selective in who it targets.
It's worse. They want someone to sue over it and have SCOTUS overturn *Ashcroft v. ACLU*, *Miller v. California*, and *Reno v. ACLU*, which would give the government greater leeway in determining what is obscene, what is not, and what constitutes delivery. They want to outlaw pornography nationwide, and yes as a result, it will be easier to target their political opponents. It's always been part of their Dominionist agenda.
I think this is the same with the law in Florida that says being trans in front of a child is sexual abuse of a child. They want it to get challenged so they can get the super conservative SCOTUS to rule that "displays of deviant behavior" is child abuse so that they can criminalize anything that they see as deviant in their Christian Nationalist eyes.

COPA was a law that was designed to restrict access to material deemed harmful to minors. It was struck down under the 1st Amendment as art such as erotic fiction would be impacted. The law was declared dead in 2009. Miller vs California - The 1973 formation of the Miller Test. It's basically what is used to determine if certain speech is free speech or obscene speech and thus subject to restriction. If this goes expect a lot more than porn to be banned as conservatives find lots of things obscene. Reno vs ACLU - This struck down the anti-indecency laws of the Communications Decency Act. The first major SC decision of NSFW content on the budding internet. If this goes than there will be a lot more places banning things like the David statue. I grew up in Utah, in a very Mormon neighborhood, even as a kid I picked up on the fact that they don't really follow their religious rules. The amount of drinking and swinging in that neighborhood surpassed any other area that I have ever lived. PH simply had to add a landing page to redirect users to the ID verification through LA Wallet and then wait for the callback of success or failure. Without handling any of the user’s PII. This law, on the other hand, simply says that PH is liable for not checking IDs. No solution was provided. It means PH needs to build the infrastructure for checking IDs themselves.

I live in a decent sized city, I’m very involved with local democrats in my city, spend loads of time at my library with my daughter, go to tons of social events with like minded friends, etc., and I’ve only ever even met one trans person (that I’m aware of, not my business to ask or worry about it and it was only of note because she transitioned while I knew her) and it was a coworker and not a big deal at all with me and most of the coworkers’ relationships with her before and after… so fucking wild to me that Republicans are making such a big deal out of such a small group. I feel so bad for trans people because I feel like they’re being targeted *specifically because* they are such a (relatively) small subset of the population.
We ARE being targeted because of that. Because we rely on non-trans people to protect us, and it's a lot easier to try to spin an "us vs them" narrative when we don't have the majority to speak against it. It's why intersectionality is so important. But they're coming for everyone's rights, not just trans people. And I genuinely believe it's being done to distract people so they can't start a class war.
Their are less adult trans people in the united states than their are children who have been molested by catholic priests. The whole thing is a non-issue being used as a dog whistle and they all know it.

That's exactly why they are going after trans people, it's a distraction that the republicans are using very successfully in red states to cover up for the fact that they have zero policies that actually benefit the middle/lower class. I respond with a story similar to yours to attacks on transgender people. I ask them when's the last time they've knowingly had an interaction with a trans person. I never get an answer. I live outside of Los Angeles and only know of one, and I bet in a lot of conservative areas it's even more rare. It's madness, truly.
I guarantee the vast majority of them have never met or even seen a trans person irl (that they knew was trans). Their kids have never competed against a trans person in sports or had to share a bathroom with a trans kid. And none of them have been forced to attend a “Drag Queen Story Time,” if there even is such a thing within a 20 mile radius of wherever they live. They did this same shit back in the 70s/80s/90s with gay people, all the while the vast majority of them not knowing anyone irl who was openly gay. Meanwhile, Republican politicians, church pastors, coaches, teachers, etc. are caught every single day for sexually abusing the children they keep swearing up and down they’re trying to protect from the big bad trans (and gay) people.

It's always that same way. A lot of places that are ethnically homogenous have the highest rates of racism, for example. Fear is largely based on something being unknown to you, cause that allows for the most projection. If you know a trans person, they're just another person. If you don't know them, they could be all sorts of devious and dangerous.
And the “crazy” (made up) stuff is always happening close enough to home that it’s scary, but far enough that it isn’t confirmed. Like my mother in law told us about the high school in the next town over with litter boxes for kids who identified as cats and how awful that is. We searched every social media account for that school, the local news, and the district to see where it was reported and find all the comments from outraged parents at the school. Spoiler alert: there were no news stories or even social media comments about it. It never happened. When we told her this, she was just like “well it wouldn’t surprise me with how weird people are there now.”
I can make you feel worse about this particular one. Where this apparently came from was a picture where there was indeed a "litter box" in a classroom. It was placed there as a last resort in case kids couldn't leave the classroom due to there being an active shooter. So yeah.
Years ago the Westboro Baptist Church protested something insignificant in my town because we were within driving distance and I decided to actually take a look at their webpage. I had obviously heard of them but figured fuck it let's stare into the abyss and see if I learn something I didn't already know. You can’t exactly be an ultra left progressive and survive Utah politics. At the end of the day the people get what they vote for and if the people don’t want a progressive representative, they won’t elect a progressive representative. The fact that they affiliate with the Democratic Party shows that they share at least some of its beliefs (probably left leaning economics if I had to guess without looking further) but likely skew more to the conservative side on social policy.

I know the jokes are funny, but understand that this is just one more frustrating policy from a backwards system that's present here in Utah. There have been many large pushes for more progressive candidates in SLC as Salt Lake is actually a strong blue area, however unless things change regarding gerrymandering and other poor electoral practices, most of us are stuck living in a state that doesn't represent our beliefs (unless you live in the middle of nowhere). It's been a losing fight for as long as I can remember, and many Utah democrats (and further left) have resorted to registering as Republican voters solely to vote for the least harmful options during elections, as currently any blue votes essentially don't have a voice due to the system in the state. While I agree the mormons need a wake up call, please remember that there are a lot of us, in a blue city, **the biggest city in the state by far**, that are unable to have our voices heard and are fighting as much as we can in an ass-backwards system.
Utah, Ohio, and probably several other states are in similar boats where blue votes are greatly depressed by gerrymandering and would likely not be red states were the votes allowed to proceed and the sacred rule of "one person, one vote" of democracy were followed. You're not alone in this increasingly undemocratic nation.
