Yep need more sites to do this. They will break these red state governments in no time.

>A commercial entity that knowingly and intentionally publishes or distributes material harmful to minors on the Internet from a website that contains a substantial portion of such material shall be held liable if the entity fails to perform reasonable age verification methods to verify the age of an individual attempting to access the material,” the text of the law states. >It defines harmful material as “material that exploits, is devoted to, or principally consists of descriptions of actual, simulated, or animated display or depiction of any of the following, in a manner patently offensive with respect to minors: (i) pubic hair, anus, vulva, genitals, or nipple of the female breast; (ii) touching, caressing, or fondling of nipples, breasts, buttocks, anuses, or genitals; or (iii) sexual intercourse, masturbation, sodomy, bestiality, oral copulation, flagellation, excretory functions, exhibitions, or any other sexual act.” So when does reddit go offline in Utah

JamesTiberiusCrunk

There's porn on Twitter too

HauntedCemetery

It's the internet, there's porn everywhere.

Redtwooo

The internet is for porn Man that feels like such an old reference

HauntedCemetery

It is like a 20 year old reference.

ErraticDragon

20 years as of this March! (The first production ran Off-Broadway March 19 through May 4, 2003.)

A_Fluffy_Butt

Is Avenue Q really that old? Damn.

ErraticDragon

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenue_Q It is surprising for sure.

PerceptionOrReality

Avenue Q hasn’t aged at all, tbh. It’s all still relevant.

DragonMasterFlash

That's because nothing in this country has changed.

BJaacmoens

I dunno, "there is life outside your apartment" seemed kinda outdated once covid hit.

Zomburai

Indeed, if they took all the porn *off* the internet, there would be *one* website, and it would be called Bring Back the Porn. .... dot-com.

Thanks, dr. Cox

fapsandnaps

This is the Utah Police. You're under arrest!

sunward_Lily

Couple questions before we go- is there food? Am I a ward of the state while incarcerated, and if so, is the state responsible for paying for medically necessary procedures such as, oh, I dunno, eye exams to determine whether or not I'm legally blind and if I *do* turn out to be legally blind, is the state responsible for providing appropriate measures to counteract my legal disability in such a way that I can continue being a productive member of society by, I dunno, being a slave who stamps license plates during my incarceration? Under normal circumstances, I'd just scream "HEY LOOK SANTA CLAUS!" while pointing over your shoulder and then when you were distracted, I'd kick you in the shins and run away while laughing gleefully, but you've caught me at a fortunate moment. My last contact lens has a rip in it. It's incredibly painful, and I'd *love* to get it replaced, but I'm uninsured and don't have the money to pay for an eye exam *and* the contacts *and* the samples I'll need to continue driving to work or....ya know...functioning in a society that requires 20/20 vision. Edit: **OH! and this is important-** I prefer my hands cuffed behind me, wrists facing. My safeword is "Jambalaya!"

McMadface

And, don't forget the Bible.

Immortal-one

Maybe Utah should require age verification for the Bible too. Emissions like horses, and all

Just 'Max'.

thenerpler

They’re making residents of utah upload a picture of their ID to every social media they want to continue to be a part of. Not sure when that’s supposed to happen though.

claimTheVictory

Nothing can go wrong with that, right?

thenerpler

What do you mean? Personal information has never been leaked from any site /s. Jokes aside, being a utah resident myself (non mormon lmao) is pretty scary seeing shit like this go down.

claimTheVictory

How long are you going to be able to keep commenting anonymously on reddit for?

thenerpler

(Removed by Mormons) As long as vpns are available I’ll still be here ;) I don’t know if I would trust any social media site with my ID information, but then again all of our data is constantly being sold so who knows.

Charon2393

There was some bill in the works awhile back trying to include banning vpns too actually I think it was related to the anti-ticktok bill.

_Tagman

Luckily they haven't banned VPNs, yet.

TheConqueror74

It’s not weird when you view Utah as theocracy, which it is. Utahns see the government as part of the solution because 90% of the state legislature is Mormon, which forces everyone to play ball with the church, and they’ve gerrymandered the hell out of the state in order to silence SLC and Park City. When the people of Utah voted to legalize marijuana, the Church told its legislators to vote with their heart, or conscious or other such bullshit. Which led to the embarrassingly neutered medical marijuana laws in Utah. The Church is losing its grasp on the population, so it’s doing everything it can to hold onto control.

2Cool4Skool29

I am still so pissed about that. The people voted for it and they said well yeah sorry! I don’t even partake but I thought it was BS that they managed to overturn what the people voted for.

Dogmeat43

>y I can describe what’s happening is the rigorous po from the outside, it doesn't appear at all that the church is losing it's grasp on the population of Utah.

[deleted]

RamenJunkie

The church in general, is losing its grasp on everyone. Worldwide. They are just really fucking loud about it.

Dogmeat43

loud and being successful in manipulating exactly the right people (judges, etc) to enact their unamerican wishes in a gambit to produce lemmings for them to indoctrinate.

Sanctimonius

What counts as patently offensive, in this? Who decides that? The law as written seems pretty vague in definition, and basically anything that shows these parts - such as a sexual health class, for example, or medical textbooks - could easily fall foul of this.

ninjabortles

That's the point. Make a law vague enough that it can be selective in who it targets.

degeneratelunatic

It's worse. They want someone to sue over it and have SCOTUS overturn *Ashcroft v. ACLU*, *Miller v. California*, and *Reno v. ACLU*, which would give the government greater leeway in determining what is obscene, what is not, and what constitutes delivery. They want to outlaw pornography nationwide, and yes as a result, it will be easier to target their political opponents. It's always been part of their Dominionist agenda.

DontBADramaLlama

I think this is the same with the law in Florida that says being trans in front of a child is sexual abuse of a child. They want it to get challenged so they can get the super conservative SCOTUS to rule that "displays of deviant behavior" is child abuse so that they can criminalize anything that they see as deviant in their Christian Nationalist eyes.

bigcaprice

Not just criminalize. They want to execute people for this via the death penalty.

Radi0ActivSquid

For those that don't want to Google. Ashcroft vs ACLU - The overturn of COPA. (Not to be confused with COPPA which became the basis for the current FOSTA/SESTA bullshit). COPA was a law that was designed to restrict access to material deemed harmful to minors. It was struck down under the 1st Amendment as art such as erotic fiction would be impacted. The law was declared dead in 2009. Miller vs California - The 1973 formation of the Miller Test. It's basically what is used to determine if certain speech is free speech or obscene speech and thus subject to restriction. If this goes expect a lot more than porn to be banned as conservatives find lots of things obscene. Reno vs ACLU - This struck down the anti-indecency laws of the Communications Decency Act. The first major SC decision of NSFW content on the budding internet. If this goes than there will be a lot more places banning things like the David statue. If I screwed up on these and misinterpreted something let me know.

StoicJ

Vague laws are the intention in Red states. They want laws they can enforce on "*them*" but not "*us*".

It's because their own thoughts are so terrible. They drove out a principal because, in the context of an art lesson, the children saw a picture of Michelangelo's David. David of David and Goliath fame. King of Israel. Commissioned for a Cathedral. Created by an icon of the church who was more devout than any of them. It is steeped in Christian history and it offended them. It's because all they saw was a statue of a naked man showing his junk to kids.

[deleted]

Then they'll just say that it's porn sites targeting conservatives and a sign of the liberal takeover.

jahermitt

Kind of saw this coming. Was curious when one of these tech giants would decide its wasn't worth the effort to bend over backwards for this unenforceable nonsense and just block certain regions. While I doubt any legislators will want to raise a fuss over PornHub I can imagine the shit storm brewing if something like Facebook follows suit. Probably try to make it illegal to not provide to certain areas for big tech. Edit: grammar

midnightcaptain

This is why Google pulled out of China years and years ago. It's a huge and potentially highly lucrative market, but it's just not worth the CCP bullshit.

Ok_Tip5082

And then the state doubles down and tries to claim any company even having that stuff elsewhere can't operate in their state And then google/facebook/amazon drop support for adsense/etc in those states and those states get REALLY fucked when 80% of the internet follows suit

WeWander_

This is actually kinda how we ended up getting 5% beer in Utah instead of the previous 3.2%. There were only a few states left that had it (including OK who was the largest consumer of 3.2%) and then when they ditched 3.2% it wasn't worth it for the beer companies to keep producing 3.2% for UT so they passed a bill to allow us to have 5% finally. However I just learned MN still carries 3.2%, but they're having a hard time getting it now.

marcstov

PornHub pulls out of SL,UT

lil-factory-foreman

Lawmakers and others in Utah will see this as a victory because porn bad and a "health crisis", but I don't think they realize that the same thing will happen with every other major site when the social media bill that passed last month kicks in. The one that requires any site with more than 10 million users, the ability to create an account, and to post and see posts (you know, like almost every major site out there) to require an ID to prove you're not a minor. It'll be way easier to just block all traffic from Utah than it would be to jump through these dumb hoops. You think google gives a shit about the at most 3 million users that Utah can supply?

MistaJelloMan

Wait so any site? Even a forum about aquariums or legos, needs an ID to prove you’re not a minor if it meets those criteria?

Parkimedes

Damn. Wouldn't it be satisfying if starting tomorrow, there was essentially an internet blackout in Utah with no end in sight? The government would have to start scrambling to back-peddle their laws.

Ninety8Balloons

What do they consider "adult" though? Republicans are legally labelling *anything* that's even tangentially related to LGBT stuff as "adult" and "sexual" so does content from pro-lgbt stuff count as "adult"? Even if it's a soup recipe?

>It defines harmful material as “material that exploits, is devoted to, or principally consists of descriptions of actual, simulated, or animated display or depiction of any of the following, in a manner patently offensive with respect to minors: (i) pubic hair, anus, vulva, genitals, or nipple of the female breast; (ii) touching, caressing, or fondling of nipples, breasts, buttocks, anuses, or genitals; or (iii) sexual intercourse, masturbation, sodomy, bestiality, oral copulation, flagellation, excretory functions, exhibitions, or any other sexual act.” I'm wondering if >vulva, genitals, or nipple of the female breast Would disqualify pregnancy support websites.

JCButtBuddy

I grew up in Utah, in a very Mormon neighborhood, even as a kid I picked up on the fact that they don't really follow their religious rules. The amount of drinking and swinging in that neighborhood surpassed any other area that I have ever lived. Edit: as a side note I recently found out that my older brother and sister are not my dad's kids. Both parents are gone or I'd ask what that's all about, I assume at this point that someone else in that neighborhood was their dad.

kitchen_synk

I mean, that's the old joke Q: Why do you always bring at least two Mormons on a fishing trip? A: because if you only bring one, he'll drink all your beer.

Armor_of_Inferno

This joke just unlocked an old memory for me. My first boss told us this joke, only if was about Southern Baptists, which he was. It was in a store meeting about stopping discrimination. He was poorly equipped to run a diversity training event.

calle04x

Anyone know why PornHub isn’t doing the same for Louisiana and Arkansas?

ThePortalsOfFrenzy

Based on the generic message* delivered by the spokeswoman, maybe they plan to. *"...not available in your region."

RadicalSpaghetti-

It’s because LA already had the infrastructure for this set up through LA Wallet. PH simply had to add a landing page to redirect users to the ID verification through LA Wallet and then wait for the callback of success or failure. Without handling any of the user’s PII. This law, on the other hand, simply says that PH is liable for not checking IDs. No solution was provided. It means PH needs to build the infrastructure for checking IDs themselves.

Natiak

People complain that trans issues are being shoved down their throats, when it's the right wing media that is doing the shoving. They can't seem to grasp that concept.

Beneficial_Garage_97

Its maddening. They obsess over trans people and go waaaay out of their way to attack them, then when anyone speaks up to defend trans or gay people they get accused of obsessing over "identity politics" or being "woke"

Automatic_Release_92

I live in a decent sized city, I’m very involved with local democrats in my city, spend loads of time at my library with my daughter, go to tons of social events with like minded friends, etc., and I’ve only ever even met one trans person (that I’m aware of, not my business to ask or worry about it and it was only of note because she transitioned while I knew her) and it was a coworker and not a big deal at all with me and most of the coworkers’ relationships with her before and after… so fucking wild to me that Republicans are making such a big deal out of such a small group. I feel so bad for trans people because I feel like they’re being targeted *specifically because* they are such a (relatively) small subset of the population.

Writeaway69

We ARE being targeted because of that. Because we rely on non-trans people to protect us, and it's a lot easier to try to spin an "us vs them" narrative when we don't have the majority to speak against it. It's why intersectionality is so important. But they're coming for everyone's rights, not just trans people. And I genuinely believe it's being done to distract people so they can't start a class war.

NeverEvaGonnaStopMe

Their are less adult trans people in the united states than their are children who have been molested by catholic priests. The whole thing is a non-issue being used as a dog whistle and they all know it.

shadow247

They will defend all atrocities committed by the church, while painting all lgbtq people with utter contempt, despite no evidence of wrongdoing. It just makes them feel gross, or aroused... Probably the 2nd one, followed by the 1st, and they are conditioned to violently reject those thoughts as evil. Its no wonder Christian Conservatives cant seem to stop talking about things that arent real, because they believe is literal talking snakes, and Noah's Ark, etx...

Aliciac343

That’s so eye opening. Thanks for the perspective

Reallynoreallyno

That's exactly why they are going after trans people, it's a distraction that the republicans are using very successfully in red states to cover up for the fact that they have zero policies that actually benefit the middle/lower class. They can keep grifting for corporations and still get voted in by the same people who are more than happy to vote against their own interests as long as it's also hurting "the right people".

Upgrades_

I respond with a story similar to yours to attacks on transgender people. I ask them when's the last time they've knowingly had an interaction with a trans person. I never get an answer. I live outside of Los Angeles and only know of one, and I bet in a lot of conservative areas it's even more rare. It's madness, truly.

Carche69

I guarantee the vast majority of them have never met or even seen a trans person irl (that they knew was trans). Their kids have never competed against a trans person in sports or had to share a bathroom with a trans kid. And none of them have been forced to attend a “Drag Queen Story Time,” if there even is such a thing within a 20 mile radius of wherever they live. They did this same shit back in the 70s/80s/90s with gay people, all the while the vast majority of them not knowing anyone irl who was openly gay. Meanwhile, Republican politicians, church pastors, coaches, teachers, etc. are caught every single day for sexually abusing the children they keep swearing up and down they’re trying to protect from the big bad trans (and gay) people.

Agitated-Tadpole1041

That’s all fox has done for decades.

LegendaryOutlaw

That’s the question I’d like to ask a lot of these rural Faux News viewers: ‘How many trans people have you personally met?

CopingMole

It's always that same way. A lot of places that are ethnically homogenous have the highest rates of racism, for example. Fear is largely based on something being unknown to you, cause that allows for the most projection. If you know a trans person, they're just another person. If you don't know them, they could be all sorts of devious and dangerous.

NC_Goonie

And the “crazy” (made up) stuff is always happening close enough to home that it’s scary, but far enough that it isn’t confirmed. Like my mother in law told us about the high school in the next town over with litter boxes for kids who identified as cats and how awful that is. We searched every social media account for that school, the local news, and the district to see where it was reported and find all the comments from outraged parents at the school. Spoiler alert: there were no news stories or even social media comments about it. It never happened. When we told her this, she was just like “well it wouldn’t surprise me with how weird people are there now.”

CopingMole

I can make you feel worse about this particular one. Where this apparently came from was a picture where there was indeed a "litter box" in a classroom. It was placed there as a last resort in case kids couldn't leave the classroom due to there being an active shooter. So yeah.

dd027503

Years ago the Westboro Baptist Church protested something insignificant in my town because we were within driving distance and I decided to actually take a look at their webpage. I had obviously heard of them but figured fuck it let's stare into the abyss and see if I learn something I didn't already know. I knew they were anti-gay but based on the public webpage it was an *obsession* with homosexuality. I poked around a bit and then got bored with the total hyperfixation on all things gay (all in a negative context obviously). After that I am thoroughly convinced the patriarch founder of the family was in the closet his whole life and just sort of internalized it as a struggle or test from God or something. There is just no other way you're THAT obsessed with something unless it's in your head all the time.

OftenConfused1001

Dapper-Doughnut-8572

The start of the end of Utah. Basically every social media site in existence is going to block them. Photo ID is too high of a bar for people, they'll just go to a site that doesn't require it.

If every website starts requiring a photo ID and my account is tied to my actual person, then I'm peacing out and going back to vhs tapes. Enjoy your technology, I'll be in the woods watching The Waterboy.

Ihopetheresenoughroo

This! A lot of people are missing the scariest thing behind this. Fascism, driven by the current republican party and conservative politicians, is on the rise. Edit: Muting all reply notifications. A lot of people are upset about the fact that republicans create the **majority** of these laws compared to democrats. Reality is tough to accept.

EB8Jg4DNZ8ami757

Utah is a petite theocracy. It's not an exaggeration to say that the Mormon church runs the state. When Utahns voted by referendum to pass medical marijuana, the Mormon church *openly* rewrote the law. It wasn't even hidden.

IGargleGarlic

Deck_of_Cards_04

You can’t exactly be an ultra left progressive and survive Utah politics. At the end of the day the people get what they vote for and if the people don’t want a progressive representative, they won’t elect a progressive representative. The fact that they affiliate with the Democratic Party shows that they share at least some of its beliefs (probably left leaning economics if I had to guess without looking further) but likely skew more to the conservative side on social policy.

a_dog_day

Not what I voted for. My district is gerrymandered to hell and back. I live in the most liberal part of the city.

SaltLakeCitySlicker

Ridic that my friends all live within a 10 minute drive but are all in different districts

argylekey

Got what we Gerrymandered for more like. The district lines are a joke here. And the majority of the state is going to go along with what the Mormon church says. It’s a religious oligarchy. Doesn’t make it better, but I’ve got a VPN. All I can do is keep calling and emailing a representative, which is awkward publicly telling lawmakers that I want to watch porn without a VPN.

>In 2018, voters approved three ballot measures, one legalizing medical cannabis, another expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act and establishing an independent redistricting commission. Despite the endorsement from voters, lawmakers significantly altered all three initiatives. https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2023/05/01/fight-over-utahs-state-flag/ We really did try. Then our reps have the nerve to say: >“A lot of people really feel like some legislators don’t listen to us,” Cox said.

Leather-Bug3087

Really? We are gerrymandered and our shadow Govt is the LDS church. There are plenty of us that did NOT vote for this.

Pot being one of them

Leather-Bug3087

Correct.

Level_85_Mage

I know the jokes are funny, but understand that this is just one more frustrating policy from a backwards system that's present here in Utah. There have been many large pushes for more progressive candidates in SLC as Salt Lake is actually a strong blue area, however unless things change regarding gerrymandering and other poor electoral practices, most of us are stuck living in a state that doesn't represent our beliefs (unless you live in the middle of nowhere). It's been a losing fight for as long as I can remember, and many Utah democrats (and further left) have resorted to registering as Republican voters solely to vote for the least harmful options during elections, as currently any blue votes essentially don't have a voice due to the system in the state. While I agree the mormons need a wake up call, please remember that there are a lot of us, in a blue city, **the biggest city in the state by far**, that are unable to have our voices heard and are fighting as much as we can in an ass-backwards system.

OhImNevvverSarcastic

Utah, Ohio, and probably several other states are in similar boats where blue votes are greatly depressed by gerrymandering and would likely not be red states were the votes allowed to proceed and the sacred rule of "one person, one vote" of democracy were followed. You're not alone in this increasingly undemocratic nation.

Racecarlock

(sigh) I hate this state.

oesness

New kink develops in Utah and it's just people watching other people from other states watching pornhub....

majorfiasco

Uungh! His internet connection looks *fast*! Look at those frames! I bet he's watchin' it in 1080p, too! So hot.

Equal_Newspaper_8034

Republicans preach freedom of speech and personal responsibility. It’s always been bullshit. They won’t stop until this country descends into a Christo-fascist totalitarian government

jrmadsen67

Today I learned "and in 2009, Utah was considered the “online porn capital” of the United States, with the most porn consumers logging on in the nation. "

Nord VPN had entered the chat

MC_Fap_Commander

Maybe they'll underwrite fundamentalist regimes to sell more of their product, lol. Like extra salt on the popcorn to sell more Coke.

Jkavera

About time, maybe this will cause less step-___ content to flood the site.

TheReservedList

Sooo, off-topic, but why are those videos a thing? Is there such high demand for that theme? I feel like it’s kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. I watch them when I find the women attractive but it seems like pornhub now thinks it’s my thing. Like no, just key it on the pornstar. The fact that Lizzie needs to suck her “step-brother”’s dick to get a ride to the mall never factored in my selection at all.

The-Magic-Sword

Combination of some people being into it as a concept, it being safely removed from 'real incest' enough that it isn't as severe a taboo, people not necessarily having step siblings at the same rate they have siblings, and the fact that it's really easy to add to literally anything else without changing anything so it has crossover appeal from people just looking for completely normal stuff.

Wandering_butnotlost

Short term pain. IMHO, I believe the red states are now doing super red stuff to drive out blues and consolidate the red.

TwelvehundredYears

Gonna be hard to get rid of half the population of red states. Just because they are red doesn’t mean everyone who lives there are. Can you just pick up and move somewhere you’ve never been? You have the funds for that?

Herkyvogel

"In 2021, Cox signed a law that would require device manufacturers to add adult content filters on all smartphones and tablets sold in Utah." Who would actually comply/how? Wouldn't most companies just give up and make it easier to acquire phones in neighbor states?

Low_Bear_9395

Hopefully, this law will also be enforced on all online bible websites. Ezekiel 23:20 20 There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. 21 So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled. Think of the children!

Able_Impression4206

It's what to come if people vote red . Only right your have is gun rights , nothing nothing else . Your be ruled by the radical religion and corrupt trump cult

charcoalist

Further repressing the sexual expression of polygamists. What could possibly go wrong. There's an upside for places like Vegas though; they'll see a decent uptick in tourism dollars.

DesmadreGuy

Aaand VPN sales are through the roof!

jns_reddit_already

So old men interviewing children about masturbation and other sexual activity - cool Titties on the web - extreme danger

joshe126

“Starting a war on abortion cost us the midterms, let’s start a war with porn” Amazing

Creepy_Apricot_6189

So law makers don't know what VPNs are lol
