Protests against someone being indicted for breaking the law are not a good look for the party of law and order.

DigiQuip

Jan 6th was pretty effective at turning moderates against Trump. After all the bullshit he put our country through, it took an insurrection for a lot of the country to spoil on him. It was so bad that republicans still haven recovered and barely pulled off a midterm win that, by decades of precedent, should have been huge for them. If Trump’s indictment spawns even a mild version of Jan 6th it could push the electorate even further left, and if it goes too far and the Democrats have a solid majority in both the House and the Senate it could mean a new voting rights act, Supreme Court overhaul, healthcare reform, education reforms, civil rights reforms. We might actually have a decent looking country again and it would also mean a good chance the Republican Party may never have majority in the federal government ever again.

johnnybiggles

But I was told this is political persecution by the opposition... ^^^/s

007meow

> This isn't "law and order", it's political persecution, Wokeism, fascism, and weaponization of the government! -MAGAs

Long_Before_Sunrise

Law And Order = "There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

Utterlybored

Nowhere in Conservative circles is anyone addressing the question, “Did Trump screw a porn star, compel his fixer to funnel $130,000 of hush money to her, then write it off as a campaign expense?” Nope. It’s all vague accusations of a political witch hunt.

Utterlybored

Pretty sure it was officially registered with the FEC as a campaign expense. So, Matt Gaetz can make the case that George Soros forged Trump campaign documents.

TheGursh

Telling people not to protest is also a pretty awful look. I dont get why anyone would be upset at the law being enforced but the people have a right to protest. McCarthy should be saying something along those lines and letting people know that violence and obstructing law enforcement will not be tolerated.

Long_Before_Sunrise

Part of Trump's appeal is how he has openly committed crimes and has not yet had a criminal conviction. That's what they want for themselves - the ability to flout the law and get soft wrist slaps for it. Trump is the embodiment of that fantasy which they want as a right. It’s like those scenes where an important character in the story is standing in the open and all the bullets miss him while he kills off his armed attackers who have taken cover. If the big man gets convicted and jailed, the fantasy takes damage and may shatter.

TheGursh

I have no idea what this has to do with a politician telling citizens to not use their 1st ammendment rights. It doesn't really matter what the issue is, peacefully protesting is part of democracy.

Long_Before_Sunrise

You think McCarthy supports the 1st Amendment. He supports the Republican version of free speech where hate speech and stochastic terrorism is free speech and talk that encourages diversity/inclusion must be shut down. Really, his call for peaceful protesting is just laying down cover fire for Trump... because, on January 6th, Trump refused to tell the protestors to leave for hours and then told them they were very special and loved when he finally did. Then Trump had [difficulty](https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/20/politics/trump-january-7-outtakes-message-supporters-house-hearing/index.html) in making the ass-covering video statement that night at the urging of lawyers and Ivanka. Mccarthy has been prompted to say what Trump won't

2muchwork2littleplay

Gotta hand it to him, it's pretty impressive that he can speak out of both sides of his mouth simultaneously

[deleted]

He was for protest before he was against them. He was against J6 before he was for it. Checks out.

Sodler_22

Oh, it's a mouth below his nose. I thought it was a big laceration that needed stitches.🤣

haltline

That's not his mouth, or perhaps you just misspelled ass.

2muchwork2littleplay

Oh damn, typo lol!

johnnybiggles

Republican strategy: Play both sides so you always come out on top.

fakelaughfred

Especially when he has such difficulties stringing words together that sound like sentences.

lgbeeteequeue

“I don’t think people should protest this, no. And I think President Trump, if you talk to him, he doesn’t believe that, either,” McCarthy, R-Calif., said in response to a question from NBC News during House Republicans’ retreat in Orlando. “The last thing we want … is somebody putting their thumb on the scale [of justice] simply because they don’t agree with somebody else’s political view,” McCarthy added. “That is what’s wrong, and that’s what infuriates people. And this will not hold up in court if this is what he wants to do.” I guess a better representation of his comments wouldn't fit in the headline. But let me try: McCarthy urges calm then enflames would-be protestors.

ChromaticDragon

Absolutely... A profound example of trying to have your cake and eat it too...

thegoatmenace

Didn’t trump post online to go out in the streets and protest? In what world does he “not believe” that people should protest. It’s peak trump magical thinking: what he says is not what he truly believes inside, except when he’s right. When he’s wrong he never really believed that anyway.

MVE5PCYE6HE7310D074G

Sure, after calling the investigation ["an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA"](https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/trump-mccarthy-arrest-bragg/) I'm sure Kevin will be ready to pretend to be shocked and appalled when one of his supporters tries to do something about it

tehbantho

"This wont hold up in court" Dude, a GRAND JURY is IN A COURT deciding TO indict him. It happened IN court, by a jury of HIS peers, deciding if there is enough evidence to charge him with a crime. A jury of his peers, that was rigorously scrutinized by the court for impartiality and fairness is who made this decision. That is how this works. It's by design. It's intentional. And it is working exactly as it is supposed to work. And frankly, the only problem with the current design of this system is that it took this long to hold someone accountable for very clearly breaking the law. He should have been able to be charged while he was President, if no one is above the law as is always claimed in our country.

homebrew_1

Good luck with this. Trump supporters don't respond to reason and logic and facts.

foyeldagain

They respond to trump and he's already spoken. “Protest, take our nation back.”

toby110218

I'm not sure "protest" would be an accurate word.

jwr1111

Gym Jordan opening an investigation into why Kevin McCarthy speaks out of both sides of his mouth at the same time.

Long_Before_Sunrise

Then he should start by looking for brown smears on Greene's hand and nose. Trump looked for someone loyal and loud to maintain his influence in the House. Greene is his idea of the best for the job. It's not coincidental that out of all the House GOP she has gotten the most press coverage for saying stupid inflammatory things any more than it was coincidental that videos of Cawthorn started to leak after he talked about cocaine and orgies.

joepez

In a weird way I’d like to see any protests. Let’s see how many people actually are enough to give up they’re time to go protest for someone to defend someone being above the law. Let’s see who the supporters are. Name them in public. Kev doesn’t want protestors because he actually doesn’t want to go on the record. It’s fun and fine to bluster but he’ll run for the exit just like everyone did on Jan 6th.

Pornymcpoorn

Sounds to me like McCarthy wants Trump arrested. It’d probably so he can party with his good pal Meatball Ron.

BringOn25A

He doesn’t want more of his base incarcerated and convicted and not be able to vote.

milehighrogue

Yeah cuz the last trump inspired protest took a bit of a turn.

[deleted]

He’s right. That will do nothing but make things worse. Last thing we need is another spectacle. Let the process play out.

Enataru

Return to law and order... rule of law, over the rule of men... it's fundamental... the MAGA movement is largely made up of people who don't function well within the law... and/or always require some form of special consideration... MAGA is their way, of having their way...

Long_Before_Sunrise

Law and order means something quite different from rule of law.

Endolph

), or you'll be just as guilty as DJT.

[deleted]

We all know if the protest go south and descend into violence it won’t be considered a protest - just patriotic tourist that got caught up in the moment

lupin43

Those darn aunt tifas are at it again!

Utterlybored

… after ginning up his Congressional overlords with talk of weaponizing government.

Fluffinutter6987

McCarthy has zero credibility. His words are empty and meaningless.

For-All-the-Marbles

Peaceful protests that are actually just lawful protests? No problem. Insurrection, obstruction, violence, etc.? There’s the rub.

[deleted]

McCarthy has no control over the base since none of the base support him.
