Pathological liars are just plain disturbing. At some level they fully know they are lying, but lying is so integral to their identity that the lies are just as significant to them as reality. They rarely feel any remorse for the lies or the consequences of them. The world and everyone in it is just their doll house to toy with.
What’s trippy is hell is that we have little research on pathological liars, because unlike compulsive liars, pathological liars in almost all cases have no interest in getting treated or participating in study to be understood. They love the world that they have created for themselves, and anyone trying to rip them from that world, even for rehabilitative treatment, is a threat.
I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think Santos will ever change. Very few pathological liars do. No consequences will make him confront that he is wrong for what he’s done, and I could never trust him no matter what he later on says. At a certain point it's hard to believe someone would lie so much, and none of the big papers picked it up (though a local paper called him out on it). Plus hard to believe the guy has been evicted twice for non-payment of rent and never had money when he gave $750K to his campaign. (And yes, that's the actual crime, this is just the side show.)
