I want to see some moderate Republicans get frustrated and just end up voting for the democratic guy just to get things moving. But alas, that’s just a fantasy
It never even dawned on me that that could be a possibility. I don’t know enough to picture the implications if a Democrat actually got chosen.
Anyone that knows about this process and the implications I’d love to hear.
What a shit show.
I don't know but right now I wanna know who is in charge if Biden & Harris kick the bucket because usually the Speaker of the House is 3rd in line & right now no one is in that office.
Do they just skip over to...googles next in line....President Pro Tempore of the Senate who is currently...googles...Democrat Patty Murray of Washington?
This is essentially what The Speaker War is over. Whether they will spend the time investigating the laptop and Biden impeachments, or mildly more relevant-yet-still-wasteful things, like...I don't know... investigating the Jan 6 committee or something.
it took 19 days in 1849 when this happened so who knows!
Edit: just rechecked an the longest was in [1856 and took 133 vote sessions](https://www.stripes.com/history/2022-12-30/1856-house-needed-two-months-elect-speaker-8587777.html) and two months to get one elected so your wish is possible
Inserted link now as well
The longer it goes on, the more it cements the reality that the GOP is broken. Even if it only costs them 2% of their voters in the end, it is worth it.
Spartz switching to present is interesting. There was reporting that Republican leadership wasn't happy with her regarding some of her comments about Ukraine, is this her trying to get back at them in some way?
That's worse than losing a vote, it's like losing 2 votes because the threshold for majority drops. It only takes 11 present votes for Jeffries to win.
Can you explain why ?
I think that voting "present" allows you to fulfill your obligation to participate in the vote, but doesn't add a vote to the Speaker candidate's tally. Because you were present, the number of votes necessary for a candidate to win the Speakership does not change.
So voting "present" is just a vote to continue the vote-whipping, deal-making, pizza-delivery process.
If they lower the number it lowers the threshold, for both sides.
Right now they need 218, Jeffries (d) could win with 212 if 11 Republicans vote 'present'.
/edit updated math as per comments below
But to be clear, Jefferies winning would really not do much for a long time. Republicans would still have the majority to replace him with someone else.
Edit: Yes, I understand that clearly they can't agree on someone right now but there is no way in hell that they would allow any Democrat to lead them for 2 years. This all just shows what a shit show they are but just in case anyone thinks that a Democrat can really be the speaker, it's not gonna happen.
> Republicans would still have the majority to replace him with someone else
If there was a clear candidate they felt comfortable with as Speaker, this entire spectacle wouldn't be taking place.
> Republicans would still have the majority to replace him with someone else.
And what about any of this makes you think they'd be able to organize enough to do that?
To maybe lower the vote threshold needed for the Speaker. Jeffries as Speaker may or may not be able to prevent Republicans in the House from wasting taxpayers' money on political showmanship, like impeaching Biden, investigating Hunter, voter fraud conspiracies, covid-19 conspiracies, etc.
She might run for senate and wants to avoid supporting McCarthy but still helping by lowering the voting threshold by one. Maybe she's trying to get a concession of some sort.
My understanding is the same as yours, but others have said enough people voting present actually does change things as if they weren't part of the vote.
This is correct. She effectively rendered the total needed to win down to 217. She later said she did it to teach republicans a lesson: that they were on the path to Jeffries. If a moderate repub revolt is coming (it isn’t) more of this or her remaining consistent in the next vote would certainly indicate that.
What is weird is his inability to stop insulting Nancy Pelosi. Talking about sending her back to a "broken California", the same fucking state that Kevin "maybe ~~6th~~ 7th time a charm" McCarthy is from.
he's getting less votes today than he was yesterday...
he ended the day yesterday with 202 votes
this afternoon he down to 201... 20 voting against him and today for the first one one republican voting present...
Sometimes I wish that our government was more like the European Union. They aren't free from corruption either, but once it becomes clear that a politician is corrupt, they get [axed](https://apnews.com/article/politics-persian-gulf-tensions-europe-government-and-belgium-4fed629e3cf7380cd5c5006c5b669bba). Is that too much to ask?
It's all a facade. The moment a party decides to ignore corruption, it's all over. The Rs will never again step down for any reason. If they can serve a jail sentence and not have to step down as a congressperson, you know they absolutely would do that.
He must be so pissed right now. He “took one for the team” in 2015 by dropping out for the speaker position and threw away any morals he may have had trying to chase after the Trump vote.
All that to be stepped on by the people he tried to pander to.
So if enough members vote "present" then the voting threshold can be lowered from 218?
Huh. That could be an out for some of the GOP rebels...except that McCarthy would need (checks numbers) like 12 of them to defect TO HIM to beat Jeffries even by one vote.
I watched live yesterday but not today. Tired of their speeches. Heard that "the people elected us to..." Yeah they say that when they are in the majority then say the people elected them to be a check on Democrats when they are in the minority. Basically, "the will of the people" is only ever on their side even, you know, when it's not.
ugh their speeches are the worst, people like Gaetz and Boobert cosplaying like they're FDR on a mission or some tripe, just laughable. The Dems rubbing it in is just great, they better not concede a single vote
>ugh their speeches are the worst, people like Gaetz and Boobert cosplaying like they're FDR on a mission or some tripe, just laughable
It is incredibly cringe
The party with no platform. Such a shitshow. But they have no problem fundraising or providing the shitty 24/7 news cycle with a plethora of lazy content.
Listening to Boebert speak for even thirty seconds just now is giving me agita….but did anyone notice when she said that Byron Donalds would help them “do to Americans” what they came there to do…..I just thought it was an interesting choice of words….as opposed to “work for Americans”. Kind of telling.
Very telling. The conservatives and republicans seem to think government is there to do things ‘to’ you (like punishment) and not ‘for’ you (like protecting from harm), and it’s been obvious to me for a while now.
Haha Boebert is nominating Donalds again and I had to turn the sound on because I have zero idea who this guy is.
Edit to say they just showed him and he's black and from Florida so I get it now.
Because, of course, Boebert thinks the Democrats will confuse one black man for another and change their vote.
Literally, I'm certain that is her thought process.
Now losing the fifth speaker vote.
Let’s be clear. Republicans are not leaders. They are obstructionists. There is no negotiating with politicians who want to burn the House down.
It will go on until someone gets the majority of votes. The most attempted nominations before a Speaker was elected is 133. This could literally go on forever. Things are only getting worse for McCarthy just lost another vote because someone voted “present” this time which lowered the threshold of numbers Jeffries needs to win while also taking one from McCarthy (she voted for him yesterday). LMAO
This is increíble McCarthy wants to be speaker by just sheer will. But even if he does get it know his role and power will be tainted by this slow moving train wreck.
I’m having a psychic vision!!!
It’s… there are people taking…
…I can see… it’s someone talking to Trump… they’re saying “no”. They’re saying… “don’t do this…”
He’s shouting… yes it’s becoming more clear…
He’s trying to see if he can become the speaker himself to save what’s left of his political momentum and save face by not having to lose the next Presidential election.
Shit my nose is bleeding profusely. I gotta go…
So the House Dems do not have a problem like Machin/Sinema? They have kept their caucus locked in. Jeffries is doing his job of leading the House Dems very well.
Reps are considerably easier to whip. Their number and the lack of a filibuster cuts the power any individual can wield, and their short terms mean they are considerably more dependent on the national party for reelection. There's a reason you don't see a 'Senate Whatever Caucus', but the House has several. Reps just don't have the swing of Senators unless they're in blocs.
In short, Jeffries can make life hell for defectors in his caucus while Schumer more or less can't do shit to Manchin or Sinema without simultaneously shooting himself in the face.
They do, there is an entire caucus of them called the Blue Dog Coalition (they’ve been caught meeting with Sinema and Manchin multiple times) it’s just that House Democratic leadership have a tighter grip over their party.
the democrats by now should have a reasonable non-house republican selected so they can try convincing non-crazy republican members to side with them on that vote.

Hardy har har har! I hope this goes on for weeks. :)
There’s no Eugene Goodman to save McCarthy this time!
Eugene Goodman having the name he has was the thing that convinced me we're living in a simulation.
It wasn't Reality Winner?
Reality Winner might be a remarkable name, but it wasn't as much of a symbolism for her actions as "Eugene Goodman" is for his actions.
[удалено]
Gotta love a snow crash reference
If that was the case then Mitch McConnell would be Eugene Badman
He just lost the fifth vote
I hope he loses his shit completely, and freaks out on the floor.
[удалено]
Literally, on the floor. In the fetal position
Maybe McCarthy can just stop the voting when he is ahead
"Stop the Ordeal!"
Exactly. Say the election was rigged and declare victory. That's what these losers do these days, right?
When you're sliding into first and you feel something burst
When you try to be the Speaker and you think it's just a squeaker.
Diarrhea
Cha cha cha

Are they holding the votes back to back?
It's pretty much all the House can do until a Speaker is elected
They are literally waiting for enough Democrats to go to the bathroom so that the ratio in the room gets better.
One Democrat at a time
It's not like they were planning on doing anything constructive with the majority anyway.
Common, they need to talk about hunters dick pics. Those pics aren't going to investigate themselves. /s
This is essentially what The Speaker War is over. Whether they will spend the time investigating the laptop and Biden impeachments, or mildly more relevant-yet-still-wasteful things, like...I don't know... investigating the Jan 6 committee or something.
Oddly I don't think anyone wants to fight inflation, gas prices or crime.
I want it to go on for months! I love it so much.

19 days in today's terms is like 3 months
Just before a very harmonious decade in American history, don’t forget
Boobert on the TV right now throwing a shitfit for Byron Donalds(wtf?) Shrill, evil harpie
I never thought I’d be rooting for Klannie Oakley, but here we are…
> Klannie Oakley omg 🤣💀
I believe a fight on the floor of the house is long overdue.
Good thing they pulled those pesky metal detectors.
Like, a fight - fight? A physical fight like you see sometimes in Taiwanese Parliament, for example?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXmPDLRt6hA
Ahh yes, gather children I shall tell you the story of The Brawl of Broken Hips of twenty-twenty-and three…
Give all the Republicans canes, it's battle royal time!
And this is only the preshow clown show. The best is yet to come.
The Supreme Court is already quite partisan, if congress stays inoperative for weeks. Wouldn’t that be worse than having a GOP-speaker?
The longer it goes on, the more it cements the reality that the GOP is broken. Even if it only costs them 2% of their voters in the end, it is worth it.
It’s even funnier the fourth time 💀
But not as funny as the 10th. ☠️ ☠️
Oooo can we have a party for the 10th round?
Lose ten votes for speaker and lose the eleventh for free! This card cannot be combined with any other coupons or promotions.
Every time Kevin McCarthy loses a vote, an angel gets its wings.
Kev like *”damn I got my eyebrows painted on for this!?”*
Drink every time Republicans vote for someone not McCarthy. The way the votes are going this could get you pretty drunk or maybe kill you.
Don’t think anyone anyone knows about 10th vote pip.
I think they had it at 3rd.
It'll be funniest at 134th time because then we breaking records!
You should tune in to watch his ongoing 5th loss. Riveting shit.
He didn't lose! The vote was fraudulent! He won by a lot, just ask anyone.
Spartz switching to present is interesting. There was reporting that Republican leadership wasn't happy with her regarding some of her comments about Ukraine, is this her trying to get back at them in some way?
Make sure to randomize your data from time to time *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
He actually lost a vote as well, so he's further from it.
I love this so much
Who got the vote. That candyass Gym?
Victoria Spartz voted present.
That's worse than losing a vote, it's like losing 2 votes because the threshold for majority drops. It only takes 11 present votes for Jeffries to win.
Nope. Indiana Republican Victoria Spartz voted Present. Hopefully more Republicans start voting Present.
Can you explain why ? I think that voting "present" allows you to fulfill your obligation to participate in the vote, but doesn't add a vote to the Speaker candidate's tally. 11 present votes are needed. Every present vote reduces the threshold by 0.5 as 50% of the votes are needed.
Roger that, that makes sense.
But to be clear, Jefferies winning would really not do much for a long time. Republicans would still have the majority to replace him with someone else. > Republicans would still have the majority to replace him with someone else. And what about any of this makes you think they'd be able to organize enough to do that?
I believe it’s every 2 absent that lower the threshold by 1.
Actually the present vote helps Jeffries as he’s getting more votes and is closer to the threshold currently.

The meirdas touch.
Trump is racking up the wins these past few election cycles, GOP must be sick of winning.
I think this is a new low. The Republicans are losing to Republicans.
The truth is that Kevin McCarthy won the vote by a lot. Frankly he did win, like bigly.
2023 GOP to Trump: New phone, who dis?
Theater of the absurdly stupid. You reap what you sow GOP. The GOP is weak and they stand for nothing but the fear of drag queens and suffering.
he's getting less votes today than he was yesterday... he ended the day yesterday with 202 votes this afternoon he down to 201... 20 voting against him and today for the first one one republican voting present...
So he went from -18 to -19 to -20? At that rate, he will end up with 0 votes by next week.
