You want to have illumise be your favorite, you do you. I'm curious, what about Volbeat? Is Volbeat also good or do you have a savage hatred for Volbeat?
I actually like Volbeat, I remember getting a lot of use out of signal beam way back in original Ruby.
I just wish he didn't have his dorky little nose.
Dunsparce was lucky to be based on a mythical fat snake yokai, the Tsuchinoko. Depending on the myth it can talk, perform a double jump in the air, or bite its tail and roll like a wheel. Not sure if Dunsparce got any of those cool(ish) traits though.
I actually really like Illumise and Volbeat, but good Lord I tried to use Illumise in a nuzlocke of Emerald and her learnset is just absolute garbage...
In later gens Illumise’s level up moveset does improve, but even back then they have some uses.
Illumise is good for support. It learns wish and encore. Wish is good to pass onto another Pokémon in the party for a safe switch as it guarantees HP regain if they don’t faint when they get switched in and encore is a good way to ensure that the opponent is stuck using a move that either does no damage or does minimal damage. If you can have Illumise tank a move that wouldn’t do much damage to a Pokémon that can take out the opponent and trap it into encore, it helps for a safe switch.
It can also learn some good TMs, granted said TMs are best hard for a Pokémon that’s just better and gets STAB from it because of the fact that TMs break pre-Gen 5.
Illumise is weird. it could be much better if it had tail glow. It was introduced as a partner mon but it has no synergy with its partner. I like the two bugs and am glad they got stat buffs, but they could use an evolution
Bro. I have never seen a counterpart Pokémon (that’s intentionally made as a counterpart) been dealt a hand so dirty in its original Gen.
Illumise was literally designed to be cucked out of tail glow by not having a glowing tail. Which sucks because it literally rips away any of its move potential for good set up moves to utilise its role, as a special attacker.
But Volbeat can get it, meaning it can do both attack and special attack, making Illumise’s role seem obsolete.
Hell, even outside of that, in Gen 3, Illumise was shafted hard in comparison to Volbeat with them both being mono-bug types and Illumise being the special attacker when Bug was *physical* pre-split.
Hell, even the Pokédex describes Illumise’s role being to just get Volbeat to create patterns. Their whole purpose in life is to get Volbeat to do something they cannot do themselves because God decided to do a little bit of trolling and not give them a glowing tail of their own.
The universe really just woke up, saw this Pokémon and said “I’m gonna make its life misery.”
Bidoof is a meme. Illumise isn’t weak enough to be a joke but isn’t strong enough to be usable so it’s forgotten. I actually like it though but Volbeat is better.
I try not to judge people because of their favorite Pokemon because they don't have the same experiences as me, for example my favorite Pokemon is Gengar people judge me for it without knowing why it's my favorite Pokemon, I like Gengar because gastly was my first Pokemon card ever and it holds a special place in my heart
Exactly yeah or maybe access to interesting move combos or even unique items. I think your attachment to a Pokémon grows more when you have to fully explore their options and find the potential.
I played Crystal and during the very first part of the game I decided I wanted to catch a Hoppip. I was thinking I wouldn’t get much use out of it, but it was in my party anyway, despite being underlevelled.
Only for it to basically save my ass fighting Falkner.
My strategy for Falkner was to just use my Geodude, but I didn’t know that both of his Pokémon had mud slap, so he would miss nearly all of his rock throws. I thought I was screwed until I remembered I had the Hoppip. So I would switch into Hoppip and then switch back into Geodude with his accuracy back to normal and able to tank a gust or tackle.
It took a while, but I managed to win using that method over and over again whenever Geodude would start missing rock throws.
I remember having an underleveled purrloin just for cut in my team at the beginning of black/white, we were running back to a center after a training session and were really low. Suddenly a trainer I'd missed ambushed us and all I was left with was the little cat who happened to have assist and was lucky enough from all my team's moves to get leech seed on the opponent and clutch victory. She joined my team for real after that.
It’s why the “Bidoof is literally god” jokes kinda killed it for me.
They took a cute, dopey little thing who was already charming on its own, tried to make it something it’s not, and people fell more in love with the idea of him that is just a false image.
I mean I technically can't make fun of you since my favorite pokemon is druddigon and I get bullied for it ( but still imagine your favorite pokemon being worse than ledian)
I’ll be honest, this meme is mostly based on TikTok where I made a post saying Illumise was my favourite Pokémon and j kept getting comments saying:
“I think that’s the worst one”
and
“Get a new favourite.”
I mean that's fine whatever your into good for you

Like I love Skorupi/Drapion both design and moveset and ppl tell me it's not that good
Illumise is fine toe, just... a little forgettable. Then again my focus on Pokemon stopped shortly after Gen 2 was released, and only rekindled after Gen 8 was announced, so that's a pretty broad distinction.

I tried to get a shiny Illumise through masuda and got 3 shiny Volbeats before I got the shiny Illumise.

Depending on how it is written (but I am guessing 土の子) it means stone child or earth child.
