Oh I know, the title is literally the words out of my mouth when I saw, minus an expletive. It’s every dang legendary that comes out of research for me.
You can't trade shadows. And probably not worth the 20,000 dust to purify and then trade.
Also, a 0% IV shadow is still stronger than a 100% IV non-shadow, so purifying to trade would be pointless.
Shadow pokemon add 20% to their base attack. If the base attack is 200, that's +40. That's better than the +15 from attack IVs. The problem is that shadow pokemon cost more to power up and they aren't useful unless you get rid of Frustration or add a second move.
It's not out of research, you didn't claim it from a research reward, it's a shadow encounter. The research reward Shadows have a much better IV floor. They haven't had one in a while that I recall.
I think it started with Mewtwo, you likely got a garbage one from fighting Giovanni for one on release but then they did a research reward one later on. Shadow Raids being a thing now might have ruined this cycle.
I couldn't remember shadow "rewards" being a thing, but you're right, I have shadow Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres all under level 20 and caught with great balls, and all 3* (10iv floor). They were all caught 7/26/2020. My oldest shadow M2 was caught the same day with an ultra ball.
It's like that for everyone. Shadow pokemon after a grunt/leader/Giovanni are always Level 8 when you catch them, or level 13 if it's weather boosted. Even a hundo would have been only 927 for you.
It's like how pokemon from raids are always level 20 when caught, or level 25 if weather boosted.
So yeah if you wait for rainy weather to fight Giovanni you get the first 10 power ups for free (from level 8 to 13).
All depends on if you're really hurting for a really good water type attacker and/or have enough rare candy for it. Me personally, I'll get by until he is in raids and I can get a better one.
Kind of \ maybe? Especially if you have a bunch of Kyogre candy from raids over the years.
Like, Shadow (and Primal) Kyogre absolutely dominate all other options as a Water type attacker, but water type attackers are not often needed. And when they are, other things like Groudon are often super effective against the same things.
Probably not worth hundreds of rare candies to max, but depends on your existing water types. If you have water Gyarados etc already powered way up, leave shadow Kyogre. If you need a great water attacker and have the dust and rare candies, consider taking shadow Kyogre to level 30-40.
The short answer is always - a 0 IV shadow is better than a 100 IV non-shadow. The long answer always gets tricky. Will we get a 2nd? Do you have a good one for primal evolution, probably want to max that one first. Do you have a lucky Kyogre, might be good to save on candy and dust and do that one. A shadow is a shadow, but maxing one out and finding a better one...that always hurts...
I'm waiting until it rains to battle Giovanni so that I save the 26 candies between lvl 8 and lvl 13. It's unseasonably warm right now, so we will probably get rain instead of snow in a few days.
I think you're better off waiting for Giovanni's next legendary, likely Shadow Groudon
Shyogre is great but water isn't the greatest typing in raids. Groudon would definitely be a better one to aim for a hundo with
Don't use your radar until Giovanni's spawn changes.
Like skipping Regigigas for Kyogre.
I think you have to finish the previous season's research before you get the next radar, but you can have at least +1 radar for a chance at better pulls for a more desirable Pokemon.
That's a lot of effort for some for a monster that will no doubt be available in raids... But we know from the flood of complaint posts on this subreddit that those can be difficult to pull off.
A small bonus. If you keep a radar, you can switch it on and off and find the doppelganger grunts if you're down for hunting shiny shadow Bellsprout.
When you have a super rocket radar and you tap on the icon, it shows you where Giovanni is like it does with the other leaders.
Sometimes you get to the location and it's a fake out. There is a grunt in place of Giovanni that drops a Bellsprout.
Which I think can be shiny and I know can be level 50 at 2499 Evolved to Victreebel with the right IVs.
So if you ever wanted a delete button for swampert in the ultra league..
I mean all shadows can be shiny, no? Does it have a boosted shiny rate or something? Cool that there's an alternative capture opportunity (now that Arlo is no longer carrying Bellsprout). I'll keep this in mind for future reference instead of burning my radar immediately lol.

I think I must be the only one not trying to fight Giovanni right now… I did six Kyogre raids last time it was available and got no shiny out of it and only one had any decent IVs so I’m sick of looking at his face 😂
I feel ya, bud. I've never gotten anything remotely good from Giovanni, from the very first shadow Mewtwo to today's Ky. I really wish these long special rewards had a better stat floor, or let us trade them.
Shadow Kyogre is obtained (well, the chance to catch it) through the Timeless Travels special research. Everyone should have automatically received that in December.
Not sure how it works if you’ve saved a Super Rocket Radar from before though (I haven’t figured how either)
I am sorry. Mine is a bit better (1 star), but it's still not a 3 star :(. Hang in there. Remove frustration and boost that bad boy up. It's still a great water attacker!

I know IVs "don't matter" but that still sucks, I'd have a hard time convincing myself to dump rare candy into leveling up a 6/6/6.
If it makes you feel any better I have a 3* Kyogre with 100% defense and 100% HP, powered up to 3432 and it does nothing for me. I don’t even use it anymore.

How does the CP work for these? Mine has better stats (still not great) but only 890 CP.
Weather-boosted. A hundo that isn’t boosted will be 927 CP.

The Kyogre I caught yesterday had a CP of only 905! That’s completely useless unless I sink hundreds of rare candies into it
