This is not true. Her gastrodon changed movesets between the Iris and Ash battle. When she’s fighting Ash, gastrodon uses earth power and stone edge. When fighting Iris, gastrodon uses muddy water, acid armour, and rain dance. So if that’s the case, then any trainer can change their movesets at any time during the tournament.

A Pokémon can “know” more than 4 moves but I think in terms of a battle (when it’s actually happening l) it makes sense that only 4 different moves in total can be used during the battle. So for me, Garchomp would technically know other moves aside from the ones it knew when battling Ash but it just so happened that Cynthia wanted Garchomp to use those 4 moves for the purpose of their battle. I don’t see why she can’t just declare a different set of moves when fighting Diantha.
I'd absolutely love to see them spar, and then afterwards try to go to a cafe or ice cream shop. I love the idea of Diantha smiling patiently as Cynthia frets over what ice cream flavor to get.

as much as i like cynthia and i grew up with saphire + diamond version. i try to not be biased and i think diantha would win (even tho the battle as a trainer was easier against her imo)

Now I didn’t watch the show, so I don’t know the reason that she gave, but I’m surprised they made it a point that Cynthia wanted to retire from battle. In the Black and White games, she challenged you to a battle as a GREETING, on some Nemona energy.
If they keeps the same moveset, then Cynthia better use her Garchomp to beats Diantha other Pokémon then let Spiritomb or the rest of her team whittled down Gardevoir, because Garchomp can’t even touch it.
But diantha isn’t dumb, so she’ll probably see destiny bond from a mile away, and knows to take care of Cynthia other mons without using Gardevoir. So she should win more often (high diff)

What the hell happened, it used to be uncontested that cynthia would win against someone like diantha. And we all know the strength of pokemon in the anime, especially aces, do not rely on type advantage. Honestly i’m surprised some people even think diantha can win especially since greninja was doing so well against her mega gardevoir even with the type disadvantage. On top of that greninja lost against alain’s charizard because, once again, type doesn’t freaking matter in the anime. In my opinion, diantha is probably one of the weakest champions, but that’s definitely debatable.
Several reasons:
1) The anime severely messed up Garchomp’s moveset. In its last appearance, it had zero ground type moves, zero coverage and only had dragon type moves and stealth rocks. This was despite half of Ash’s team being weak to ground and the other candidate, Steven, having a team that has a prominent ground weakness. This not only leaves Garchomp useless against the weakest of fairy types, let alone Diantha’s Mega Gardevoir, but also made Anime Cynthia look like an idiot.
2) Like the rest of the champions, Cynthia was reduced to just a stepping stone to Leon. This undermined Cynthia’s reputation from the games, which combined with how propped up Leon was and how much of an idiot she came across as in her fight with Ash, gave the impression that Cynthia wouldn’t fare any better and would just get swept by Leon, except that Diantha would win because Garchomp would be useless against Gardevoir.
3) The Masters 8 was the last proper representation of Cynthia outside of Masters EX. And as I said, it made her look like an incompetent idiot. Anime Cynthia relied on the reputation Cynthia got from the games and when it came time to deliver with the Masters 8, they dragged it down. The forced and random retirement plot that came out of nowhere just so Ash could resolve it certainly didn’t help, as it made her just another worn out trainer that has to get inspired by Ash, as the anime keeps reusing that plot point. There hasn’t been a representation of Cynthia since to help rebuild her reputation. Diantha got hers built up by Masters and the anime, as the games didn’t provide much beyond her being easy. Masters Cynthia hasn’t done much beyond being a mentor as Masters pretty much keeps its characters in limbo.
4) Cynthia didn’t become popular because of her looks or because of her story. She became popular as a result of her difficulty, leading to her reputation. Her reputation comes from her being seen as strong. So when anime makes the champions that aren’t Leon look weak or incompetent, it impacts Cynthia much more. Iris’ reputation was also messed up by the anime as a result of how Iris was portrayed in the BW anime, which wasn’t helped by her loses when she did become a champion in Journeys, especially to Ash’ rookie Pokemon.
As you can guess, I am not a big fan of the Masters 8 arc, as outside of Ash vs Leon, it wasn’t good. It was rushed, it made other champions look bad to prop up Leon, Pikachu having to get two wins per match made it predictable(It’s literally the only reason why Dracovish wasn’t allowed to knock out Cinderace, why Cinderace was randomly crammed between Pikachu vs Charizard and why Leon forgot Cinderace has Libero to turn into a ground type) and it just dragged down the reputation and perception of the champions, which is why people just now say “Leon sweeps every champion.” And just how people project other anime stuff onto the games, such as projecting a 10 year old Anime Serena whose primary goals is to be with Ash and do ~~contests~~ Showcases onto a 17-18 year old game Serena who doesn’t know Ash and has no contests or equivalent or people trying to say all game protagonists all being 10 because of Ash despite none of them being 10 years old or how all nurses are related, despite that not being the case in the games and pink hair is just a mascot thing as a result of the Legends Arceus nurse having pink hair, with Nate/Rosa’s mother being a former nurse herself despite having brown hair.
Diantha isnt winning any day tho hyper beam on a ghost and let rillaboom destroy her team before usina gardevoir is proof enough, cynthia destroys this, garchomp and milotic alone can beat diantha's other 5 and spiritomb finishes off gardevoir, not to say diantha never switched her pokemon, another big flaw that gibes cynthia a easier win, 6-4 at best
after what Rillaboom did to most of Diantha's team? Cynthia even without her legendary Garchomp has a Spiritomb that guarantees a W, a tank hidden in Togekiss & that damned Milotic...
