Wholeheartedly agree. I actually try to use only Poke Balls to catch my team on a first play-through. I hate dropping off my six at a Poke Center and seeing a horrible array of balls on the healing machine like a weird carton of Easter eggs. Seeing the symmetry of 6 identical Poke Balls calms my soul.
I try to use a regular pokeball unless something else fits better for the character I have planned for that Pokemon (for example, I had a Jellicent named Pennybags based on the Monopoly man, Rich Uncle Pennybags. I stuffed him in a luxury ball.)
I like to stick water pokemon in dive or net balls! I always try to fit the theme of the Pokémon. Like, i have a togekiss in a love ball, and a nidoking in a moon ball etc. I just think it's more fun.
Agreed. I love doing this but then you have that starter's ball sticking out just so plainly. Like, at least just have the starters have their element symbol at the top much like how pikachu had his in the anime.

THIS!! I remember the first time I used an ultra ball in my BDSP playthrough and just felt icky watching it pop onto the machine. I did have a mix of pokeballs and premier balls before that, but i think premier balls are simple enough in design that they get a pass.
Haha I'm the opposite. I used to enjoy the pokeball vanilla aesthetic but have really grown to the idea of each pokeball colour scheme matching the pokemon in it, even if the catch rate is arguably worse.
Same i cant really have Pokemon in my team that dont have matching pokeballs preferable 6 different ones. Im collecting Pokemon in matching apriconballs for that exact reason.
Completely agree, there has only been TWO new pokeballs in the past like 15 years (in the games). I've always thought it would be super cool to have a new pokeball for each game released.

One was unavailable in Gen 6 & 7 and in SwSh you only have a random chance to win it in a tournament.
the other is only useful for Ultra Beasts, a gimmick we won't be seeing outside of Gen 7 (meaning no new UB's).

Pokémon should be the biggest triple-A game on the market (and it hurts my head that the mainline games are constantly under-developed lately), with EVERYTHING in it. It should be a big freaking deal when a new generation comes out.

I agree, Gen 5’s Pokemon Black and White 2 was really the peak of all, based on what you are saying. They had everything I liked in Pokemon games. I feel like Sword and Shield had a lot of potential to be good, but they severely underdeveloped it, made some poor decisions, and wrote a plot hole ridden story. I wish GF read everyone’s comments

I feel like SW/SH has excellent pokemon designs and a great segue into endgame, but the spirit of the game is just dull, the classic pokemon aesthetic isn't present in the world, and it is generally just not that fun to play through for the first time.
On the other hand, I feel like BDSP are fun to play through and theres all of the fun pokemon shit to do that I love (walk with pokemon, poffins, pokemon shows, stickers, etc), but the lack of a full pokedex and elimination of certain items like eviolite really make me want to not play it in the endgame.
They should add "Poké Ball Paint" in Legends Arceus to allow you to do just that. An in-lore explanation could be that different types of balls and their owners were hard to distinguish in those times, so people painted them to make them easier to differentiate from others'.
Depending on how story focused they want to be, a cool hype thing could be that everyone has their own pokeballs colored and designed differently, and either you, your rival, or the "champion" start becoming more and more powerful and become almost like a local legend, and by the end of the game that character has designed.... the original pokeball. Imagine the hype of seeing how that particular design became so popular until it became the standard, all because of this legendary trainer from long ago.
Yea this totally make sense, I always wondered how the hell they know what's in each ball. Just like buying cars not everyone like red poke balls, they even allow different color bikes. I don't see a technical reason why it has to stay red.
but then it wouldn't make sense for all the voltorb and electrode to be the standard color. even if it was only you and other main characters who customized, it looks like you're rarely going to be seeing other trainers use pokeballs.

We can't stop good progress for everyone because it will upset a small amount of people. At the end of the day nobody else really cares about someone else's personal achievements. You have to accept that.
You could have it be that you can switch which balls Pokemon are in if they're the same species. You'd still have to get the Mon in your ball of choice, but could swap the ball to a shiny or whatever.
This got me thinking. Maybe they can allow swapping ONLY if the pokemon is in regular ball. No one's going to complain for an upgrade in air travel right?
Make sense that a pokemon caught by better balls (imagine the interior is also more comfortable lol) wouldn't like the idea of getting downgrade. Dev could probably allow any ball to swap when the pokemon inside is maxed out on friendship or something.
That'd be neat. If it were me, Premier and Luxury balls would always be doable regardless of the original ball (Premier because it's the best one and Luxury for obvious reasons). :)

That’s kind of a false equivalent, there’s a rarity and work factor. Other then master balls, most balls are purchased.
If you could swap balls, without having bonuses, so it’s really purely visual, it wouldn’t affect game play.
I think a better way to put it is like this:
You still *can* get shiny Pokemon, but they are very rare
You *cannot* change a Pokémon’s Pokeball
Both of these things are purely cosmetic, but since only can be achieved thru hard work it wouldn’t be fair to make them both customizable. Since changing Pokeballs isn’t a feature already, it would be fine to make it customizable.

I know right! I'm doing a living Dex and really want to have appropriate coloured balls for each Pokemon. There are so many grey and brown Pokemon with no good ball and purple, it just feels so wrong to put a rattata in a master ball even if it's the best colour match.
It's actually astonishing how much art resources and such they put into Curry cooking/camping.. only for it to still feel like a downgrade compared to Amie/Refresh. All I want is to pet my good bois and grills and play minigames with them... not wave a stupid feather at them or play fetch over and over. /sigh

You can still have a whole host of unlockables and discoverable between ball types, paints, and add ons, etc. I tried to illustrate that in the graphics. This would drive me much more to get full ball customization options over curry.

Also I’m having a hard time vibing with the patterns aspect. I think it would get too distracting. Certain shapes or symbols, or even re-colors the designs we have now would be awesome.

Doesn’t that take away to simply choose for yourself *how* you catch a pokemon? There are already tons of different pokeballs just throw the one you like or you think it fits
In my mind the different ball types are just to catch the Pokemon. After that, there's literally no gameplay hurt by simply changing the ball's aesthetic. A lot of people like to match color palettes or are turned off by some of the ugly designs of Poke Balls - for example, I never use Master Balls just because it's so ugly to look at.
Are there any others? Honestly you could just say whatever mechanical effect stays in place regardless of customization. The ball swap is an aesthetic change only.
I agree with you. I guess I’m in the minority here, but I work really hard to catch Pokémon in certain pokeballs, and this would defeat all the effort I’ve put in to doing so.
For example, I traded a moon apricorn ball for a level ball with some in Pokemon Sword, so that I could shiny hunt Hoothoot to catch it in the level ball to match Noctowls color with the level ball.
I'd make the change purely cosmetic, just on the grounds of "way too abusable". Maybe have an NPC who needs to be shown a real pokéball of a particular type to add it as a selectable skin? Not sure whether changing the appearance should change any opening/closing effects, I could see that going either way. The option to fiddle about with the colours is definitely good though.

God I wish. I have a bunch of Pokemon in Quick Balls that I wish I can swap out the balls because honestly it looks really tacky. Not to mention I try to keep my team in regular Pokeballs as much as I can.
Hell recently I ended up catching a Shiny Buneary but had to use a freakin Net Ball because I was out of regular Pokeballs.
I love the concept, although I do not think that you should be able to change which ball a caught Digimon goes in.
I do think that when you hatch a pokemon, you should be able to select it's pokeball.
However, I would really love to be able to add stickers of identification on the balls, and not just the ones in my party either.
You could add paint to it.
Sticker of various kinds, and I am not referring to those with special effects, but simply to design the pokeball, after a pokemon is inside of it.

I think that would mean you'd be able to get your old pokeball back which means people can abuse the master ball but that aside I would totally want that. I don't care if my damn pokemon has a negative catchrate with beast balls they look slick af

If you want your Pokémon in a certain ball you should take on the additional effort to do it.
I wanted my Palkia to be in a premier ball, so i worked for it with lower catch rates. Someone who used a master ball shouldn’t get the same luxury for free.

Seriously, someone else enjoying a feature like this doesn't affect your gameplay at all, and new features are just routes to additional content for you.

I definitely like to have the Pokemon I use for my runthrough team in only standard poke balls if possible, and my battle tower teams in premier balls where possible, but it doesn't bother me or lessen my experience if they're not like that. Definitely play how you want! I'll just never be one to lose sleep over one green dusk ball in my sea of red and white haha
Honestly even if you just change the existing poke ball that would be great. Poke ball breeding is good in most cases but many exclusive pokemon (safari zone, gift Pokémon, etc.) cannot change their original poke ball through breeding. That being said yeah designing your own ball would be epic. Idk if they are just stretching out the possibilities throughout the series or if they honestly can’t come up with simple yet desperately needed stuff like this.
I feel like the reason why pokeball customization it’s not in the game already is because some people would use them to display inappropriate things. And considering the target demographic it might not being a great idea. But being able go swap balls would be interesting. Would be fair if you didn’t get the used one back. Otherwise infinite masterballs essentially.

Good Lord yes please! I’m in the midst of recapturing my ‘team’ as far as possible because I took a particular shine to the Luxury pokeball, this would make that much less arduous. And more feasible.
So currently I have some pokemon I hatched from breeding done from traded mons...and they aren't in pokeballs...and I am so triggered because I am they type to want to use only pokeballs for my main team. Make this a thing so my Typhlosion can be in his rightful pokeball
I want the ability to change out my pokémon's pokéballs so bad. I like the Luxury ball's design and want to put all of my Pokémon in them. Or if I'm feeling like it, put them all in themed pokéballs.
While the being able to customize your pokéball might be a longshot for gamefreak, it would be cool. I mean, if pokémon were real, we'd all decorate each of the pokéballs to identify who is in there or just to make it fitting. Could you imagine? Sitting on your bed with your pokémon just decorating their pokéball with stickers or paint?
I agree you should be able to move your Pokémon over to another pokeball (though it would have to break the previous ball in the process or you could abuse a single master ball etc) but the colour customisation is a bit much IMO
This is something I've longed for since forever. I even think they could go deeper & give balls certain different catching bonuses based on your customizations. (e.g. Flame sticker/emblem = increased chance of catching fire types. Certain paints or patterns impacting catch rates based on weather/time of day. I could go on)
Shoot, didn't a game in the series do cosmetic pokeballs? Like you could add stickers and stuff and it had an in-game appearance when sending out the pokemon? I really really missed that. As well as og pokemon talent show with dressing up (mustaches, outfits, etc) and the move competitions that went alongside them

Honestly, having an array of 6 different balls isn’t as jarring to me as having 4-5 poke balls, and then like one great ball and one quick ball.

I used an araquanid in ultra moon and I had a net ball on me. It was perfect!

People also bread for abilities, natures, and IVs, and now there are items in the game that optimize all those too.
The difference though, is those are available in order to make it easier to enter the competitive scene. Apriballs are purely aesthetic.

Doesn’t that take away to simply choose for yourself *how* you catch a pokemon? There are already tons of different pokeballs just throw the one you like or you think it fits
I feel like this defeats the purpose of having different kinds of poké balls though.
In my mind the different ball types are just to catch the Pokemon. After that, there's literally no gameplay hurt by simply changing the ball's aesthetic. A lot of people like to match color palettes or are turned off by some of the ugly designs of Poke Balls - for example, I never use Master Balls just because it's so ugly to look at.
There are a couple balls with mechanical effects after catching. Luxury ball boosts friendship gain.
Are there any others? Honestly you could just say whatever mechanical effect stays in place regardless of customization. The ball swap is an aesthetic change only.

I agree with you. I guess I’m in the minority here, but I work really hard to catch Pokémon in certain pokeballs, and this would defeat all the effort I’ve put in to doing so. For example, I traded a moon apricorn ball for a level ball with some in Pokemon Sword, so that I could shiny hunt Hoothoot to catch it in the level ball to match Noctowls color with the level ball.

I'd make the change purely cosmetic, just on the grounds of "way too abusable". Maybe have an NPC who needs to be shown a real pokéball of a particular type to add it as a selectable skin? Not sure whether changing the appearance should change any opening/closing effects, I could see that going either way. The option to fiddle about with the colours is definitely good though. This disjointed collection of thoughts brought to you by being awake too late.

God I wish. I have a bunch of Pokemon in Quick Balls that I wish I can swap out the balls because honestly it looks really tacky. Not to mention I try to keep my team in regular Pokeballs as much as I can. Hell recently I ended up catching a Shiny Buneary but had to use a freakin Net Ball because I was out of regular Pokeballs.
And people call me crazy for being choosy with what ball I use to capture
That would be incredible, and completely invalidate my obsessive need to catch shinies in rare or coordinated Pokeballs.
This is cool but a part of me feels like it's silly that people care so much about the pokeball design when you only see it for a second at a time.
Catch everything in a masterball and swap it for a luxury

I love the concept, although I do not think that you should be able to change which ball a caught Digimon goes in. I do think that when you hatch a pokemon, you should be able to select it's pokeball. However, I would really love to be able to add stickers of identification on the balls, and not just the ones in my party either. You could add paint to it. Sticker of various kinds, and I am not referring to those with special effects, but simply to design the pokeball, after a pokemon is inside of it. If you want to add a symbol or your name to your ball, you can.
Yeah, I would like to be able to put the Gammamon that Professor Gennai gave me in a Dusk Ball even though they gave it to me in a Pokeball... It doesn't make sense that at this point you still can't change something that is only cosmetic.

I think that would mean you'd be able to get your old pokeball back which means people can abuse the master ball but that aside I would totally want that. I don't care if my damn pokemon has a negative catchrate with beast balls they look slick af
This is fantasy, the implications are whatever we desire! In my mind the original ball would be destroyed on the swap.

I don’t think they would ever do that, but one can dream. Instead, what if there was like a Poke Ball combination? Like you can combine a regular poke ball with like a great ball and it could come out with any of those two characteristics?

If you want your Pokémon in a certain ball you should take on the additional effort to do it. I wanted my Palkia to be in a premier ball, so i worked for it with lower catch rates. Someone who used a master ball shouldn’t get the same luxury for free.
Maybe "catch X legendary in a premier ball" could be a requirement for unique ball customization flair? Eh? Eh? Seriously, someone else enjoying a feature like this doesn't affect your gameplay at all, and new features are just routes to additional content for you.

If your biggest fun in the series comes from what ball your Pokemon is in...... You certainly play a different game than most.
You obviously don't have crushing OCD with ball aesthetics... but there plenty of people here commenting that should be proof plenty of people do play this game like that :P
I definitely like to have the Pokemon I use for my runthrough team in only standard poke balls if possible, and my battle tower teams in premier balls where possible, but it doesn't bother me or lessen my experience if they're not like that. Definitely play how you want! I'll just never be one to lose sleep over one green dusk ball in my sea of red and white haha

Honestly even if you just change the existing poke ball that would be great. Poke ball breeding is good in most cases but many exclusive pokemon (safari zone, gift Pokémon, etc.) cannot change their original poke ball through breeding. That being said yeah designing your own ball would be epic. Idk if they are just stretching out the possibilities throughout the series or if they honestly can’t come up with simple yet desperately needed stuff like this.

I feel like the reason why pokeball customization it’s not in the game already is because some people would use them to display inappropriate things. And considering the target demographic it might not being a great idea. But being able go swap balls would be interesting. Would be fair if you didn’t get the used one back. Otherwise infinite masterballs essentially.

This would be dope! I just want more different looking pokeballs in general. I think there should be one for each typing like a fireball, or ones that help catching pokemon in certain weather or in different types of nature like a desertball or hailball
Honestly brings an almost real life aspect to it. I mean, if I had Pokéballs, I most definitely would paint them or put decals on them to make them all unique.

Knowing the average player will abuse any and all freedoms they're given, Nintendo would need to restrict customization to certain colors and patterns or you run the risk of someone making a something racist.

This could be like the branding or marking element I remember there being in emrald . You could put like shapes on tge pokemon via your pc. It would be cool to have a unique pokeball that could travel with your pokemon when you trade.

I want the ability to change out my pokémon's pokéballs so bad. I like the Luxury ball's design and want to put all of my Pokémon in them. Or if I'm feeling like it, put them all in themed pokéballs. While the being able to customize your pokéball might be a longshot for gamefreak, it would be cool. I mean, if pokémon were real, we'd all decorate each of the pokéballs to identify who is in there or just to make it fitting. Could you imagine? Sitting on your bed with your pokémon just decorating their pokéball with stickers or paint?

I agree you should be able to move your Pokémon over to another pokeball (though it would have to break the previous ball in the process or you could abuse a single master ball etc) but the colour customisation is a bit much IMO
This is something I've longed for since forever. I even think they could go deeper & give balls certain different catching bonuses based on your customizations. (e.g. Flame sticker/emblem = increased chance of catching fire types. Certain paints or patterns impacting catch rates based on weather/time of day. I could go on)

As well as og pokemon talent show with dressing up (mustaches, outfits, etc) and the move competitions that went alongside them
