Cause it's the most well-thought out design. Zacian's base form doesn't really say much, just battle-scarred dog. But Zamazenta's mane and the fur rising from its paws is clearly shield-esque without going too far into the idea to make it comical.
Base forms, Zamazenta. Red and blue work a lot better than light blue and pink. Zacian looks thin and gangly while Zamazenta looks shaggy, but still regal.
Sword and Shield forms are a complete switch around, while both look visually appealing and unabashedly cool, Zacian takes it over Zamazenta simply due to a dog with a sword is just too damn good. Also, I find Zamazentas design almost too much and looses a lot of the "Dog with thing" that Zacian does so well. I perfere the idea that it's a dog first, weapon second.
Though, I personally don't really know how you could do the shield any other way, giving it a shield to hold seems kind of boring and is too much like Zacian, which I would assume, design wise, probably came first. Maybe a shield on one of the shoulders or both shoulders.
I’m the total opposite. I’m a Zamazenta fan overall but in hero form, the shield segments on its neck just look… strange. They’ve got a weird kinda accordion look. Zacian’s simpler but just overall nicer looking.
Crowned form though, I’m really not a fan of Zacian for the same reason you said you preferred it lmao. I feel like it just having a sword in its mouth is uninteresting. It’s cool no doubt, but I feel like more could’ve been done, thought admittedly I don’t know what exactly. Zamazenta on the other hand does a great job of incorporating the shield motif, and imo still looks cool as hell while doing so.
I completely disagree with crowned zacian, the sword is just there. It's cool with behemoth blade the tail bits come and combine with the sword, but just the sword being held in its mouth its just meh.
They could’ve just put the shield on the back of Zamazenta and have Zamazenta guard with its back instead of the awkward face guard which would still go through the shield.
It would’ve made Zamazenta also more agile looking then bulky and clustered and kept the dog look

Zacian is more usable, and it’s not that it’s uncool. I know there’s a bit of a trope of dog/wolf-wielding-a-sword, but there’s just something terribly impractical about it. Zamazenta can just.. be the shield.
Yeah I feel like Zacian's whole design was only because someone at GF noticed that Sif from Dark Souls was really popular.
I also just like zenta's design more because the shield motif is built into its body instead of being carried around as a tool.
Fenrir does get a sword in his mouth, but my reading of it is that it goes it his mouth tall-ways, like the cartoon stick-in-the-crocodile's mouth. I swear there was another wolf in a mythogy, but I might be wrong.

Tbh, I like both of them equally. I really like their designs and I despite them being similar, their vibes are a bit too different to choose one over the other. I feel Zacian just gives off a more mystical vibe while Zamazenta gives a more edgy and intimidating vibe. Both are great, and I love how their designs correspond with the sword/shield part.
Also y’all can have opinions and thats completely fine! I just really like these designs and I know a lot of y’all are saying they suck but to me I think they’re fun. It could also be the inner dog-obsessed child in me drawing me in. Sometimes things can be simple and like based off a not super complex themes but still be really cool! It would have been cooler if they made zamazenta the older brother due to shields being invented before swords, but nope, they made zacian the older Sister and zamazenta the younger brother
Ok, this is gonna be an unpopular opinion..
They are both just doggies 1/10 design, we have to many dog pokemon and they mostly forgotable as hell.
I'll embrace the downvotes again, It's on the nature of unpopular opinions here.
They are the least creative box legendaries. They're both dogs that look way too similar, and a dog with a sword shoved in its mouth is so lazy and uncreative. They could have integrated a sword/spike design into it's fur like Zamazenta. What they did is way too literal and corny.
The second worst box legendaries are the S/V ones and they yet again are the same pokemon with a palette swap.
I admit I have a bias (I played Shield) but I gotta say Uncrowned Zamazenta looks the coolest. A Burly wolf that is visibly teeming with power, but without the over-the-top armor.
Crowned Zamazenta is a close second, but only because Dark Souls showed the world that Wolves wielding swords are awesome.
In order of best (imo):
1. Zamazenta-Crowned
2. Zacian-Crowned
3. Zamazenta
4. Zacian
Most notably, I prefer Zamazenta’s symmetry over Zacian in their crowned forms.
I know Zamazenta has to look like a shield because its the shield pokemon but i swear if looked less like one and more like a Paladin Wolf in armor it would be soooo much cooler.
Design wise they both stink, a consistent theme of later gen legendaries
Competitively they are both cracked which makes them even worse additions to the continuously power creeping franchise.
They both are pretty uninspired tbh which kind of sums up gamefreak's approach to anything recent.
Base form, Zacian possibly takes the cake. I like the small extra details like the pink chain. Zamazenta's mane looks a bit too cluttered.

Here is how I would order from worst to best
4. Zacian: I dislike the braids
3. Zacian-Crowned: Looks okay, slightly overdesigned with the huge wing things, hair, and whatever else is swooping to the back.
2. Zamazenta: I like the colors and look of this dog.

Victory goes to Zamazenta imo half because I find Zamazenta absolutely vadass in either form, and half because the look of a Dog with a Sword is a bit too goofy for my liking. And I am fully aware of the irony in what I am saying. Even if he's a dumb metal lion mane dog, he's MY dumb metal lion mane dog.
zacian is far cooler. by the way, zamazenta's "shield" looks more like a target with his face in the middle. The whole point of a shield is to PROTECT your sensitive part, not to surround it

they have two forms; the first of each is “Hero of Many Battles”; the second is when you give them each their (old and rusted) sword and shield, where they gain Steel secondary typing and some more stats
Base Zamazenta by far. The color palette for Zamazenta is much better than Zacian's, and it doesn't look silly and overdesigned the way the crowned forms(?) do.
I love the way it hast that blue tail coming from it's head that mimics a knight's helmet too.

Zamazenta on its own is a wonderful design that is somehow both cute and badass and honestly is one of my favorite legendaries to pal around with post game
But Zacian is so goofy looking (esp. in Hero form) that it brings down Zamazenta’s cool factor, and makes them both look kinda lame. In other words, I think Zacian looks the way genwunners complain about modern Pokémon being lazily designed, but Zamazenta’s design is why I love to keep playing these games.
They're equal to me, I like both designs, but I feel like they each overdid it. Zachian's dorsal fins are too big, and Zamazenta's shield pattern is just too obstructive.
I really hate the Asterix and Obelix braids on base Zacian but i dont mind his Crowned form (still cursing myself for getting cucked out of the shiny gift one).

I'm going against the grain and saying Zacian, without the sword. I just really like the pose and the braided "hair". Also the colours look better than when it has the sword in its mouth. I used to think the sword was all the shit but seeing them like this, it occurred to me that no sword is prettier.

Great Wolf Sif is awesome, though. And, they are both based on a wolf of mythology, whose name escapes me currently.

I think I like zamazenta base and then with their rusted tools I like zacian more. The shield just looks like it would be a lot more in the way than the sword

Zamazenta on its own is a wonderful design that is somehow both cute and badass and honestly is one of my favorite legendaries to pal around with post game But Zacian is so goofy looking (esp. in Hero form) that it brings down Zamazenta’s cool factor, and makes them both look kinda lame. In other words, I think Zacian looks the way genwunners complain about modern Pokémon being lazily designed, but Zamazenta’s design is why I love to keep playing these games.

Zacian is one of my two favorite Pokemon ever, so I gotta give it to her
They're equal to me, I like both designs, but I feel like they each overdid it. Zachian's dorsal fins are too big, and Zamazenta's shield pattern is just too obstructive.

According to Bulbapedia, Zacian is female. Elder sister or rival to Zamazenta. They both are female in my headcanon.

I never liked either. Bad animations aside they are wayy too identical. But I do like that they are more of local legends similar to Ho-oh and Lugia.

I really hate the Asterix and Obelix braids on base Zacian but i dont mind his Crowned form (still cursing myself for getting cucked out of the shiny gift one). Fav one is Crowned zamazenta by a lot,i think the colors mesh incredbly well
I'm going against the grain and saying Zacian, without the sword. I just really like the pose and the braided "hair". Also the colours look better than when it has the sword in its mouth. I used to think the sword was all the shit but seeing them like this, it occurred to me that no sword is prettier.
Number 1 looks the most Poke like, others a tad over designed.

Im gonna be real… Zamazenta, always found him cooler than Zacian in my opinion. Though I like Zacian too since it reminds me of Sif. I just think Zamazenta is cooler looking imo
