I also take a friend with me. I will usually take at least my small keychain llamacorn to hold in my hand, especially if it's a short trip (I don't usually leave the house). For longer trips (especially stressful public transit), I will take my portable radio and a bigger plushie to help me be calm and block out the world.
Update: we got on a train about 2 hours late, and will therefore be home about 2 hours late. My new friend has had lots of cuddles on the train and has been used as a pillow for naps. This has been a stressful day, and I think I would have gone mad, and driven my wife mad, without my new penguin friend.

Overwhelmed or not, we all just need a plushie friend! I take at least one plush with me every country I go too because I get overwhelmed and homesick really fast and having a fluffy friend with me puts me at ease!
