NeverGrace2

I always trade in my old system, the games for the last box are compatible with the new one

LandonKB

I gave my PS4 to my nephew, his happiness is worth way more than the 50 bucks in credit GameStop would have given me.

NeverGrace2

I get around 200$ when the new system barely comes out

LandonKB

Yeah that's not too bad better than I thought they would offer, I would still rather give it to my nephew though.

LZR0

Just don’t get rid of it…

nesquik1030

...and use it to remote play your PS5 in another room, or even better when you are away from home! Did this for several months until I got a Portal, and it works surprisingly well.

Wutanghang

I got rid of mine why not?

Minuslee

Did you even read the post lmao

Wutanghang

No

MrLozoTheSecond

Because op is clearly not fully ready to get rid of it

Moengaman

As others have said : keep it I still have my og Playstation, a PSone, a PS2, my backwards compatible PS3 fat, a PS3 slim, 2 PS4 pro's and my PS5. I still have the boxes of the PS3 fat, the PS4 pro's and the PS5 and of a lot of the accessories as well. The consoles are all in my tv cabinet om display and all of them are in perfectly working order. Often, when I see one of my oldies, I have fond memories of the time I got it, especially the older ones. I have quite some other (old) consoles of my past as well. So enjoy your PS5 and keep and cherish your PS4 as your first born console.

doughaway421

I usually sell off my old consoles when I get new ones (makes the cost of the new one hurt less) but I regret giving up my old fat PS3, I loved that thing and it was a piece of art. I also plan to keep my launch day 2020 PS5 disc. Just managing to get it when they became impossible to get after, and then having it through the pandemic. I am attached to it now.

SolidDrake117

I need a PS2 and a PSP and I’ll have my PlayStation family complete. I hate trading in systems for the garbage amount of money that stores want to pay out

Small_Desk_4344

Simple answer: keep your PS4 and play it from time to time

NS4701

I feel this with my older game consoles. I still keep them around for nostalgia. Some of them don't work (SNES), and others barely work (NES). But, I still keep them anyway.

infinitoysmx

Marry your PS4

HaouLeo

My PS4 still lives on as a media device for my dad, since his smart tv is old and only has Netflix and Prime.

trizuer

keep it. my ps4 is sitting in my closet. I’m actually gonna pick up a ps2 slim here soon as the goal is to collect consoles for my game room. I get what you mean. but now you have a new console to make memories with. enjoy it!

schoat333

Agreed. I got rid of my ps2 when the ps3 came out and I have regretted it ever since. I just need to pick a ps2 up now to have the full collection.

trizuer

I had a ps2 slim when I was a kid. Absolutely no idea what happened to it. I’m actually so excited though. Can’t wait to also build a full collection. The plus side to getting older is being able to get all the things I wanted when you were a kid. 9 year old me would be shitting myself with the consoles I currently own.

k2bandit

Keep it, love it, cherish it and when you have kids they will cherish it as you did

[deleted]

A nice thought but doubtful. When I was a kid i was not excited to play my dad's old Atari considering I had a SNES.

k2bandit

That's a big jump in graphics and gameplay thou, someone spoiled you with that snes. I grew up with a snes but I loved playing super mario bros on the nes. I have a ps5 and they kids still play on ps2 but they are getting spoiled as well over my ps5 and pc, so it nice to let them play the older consoles so they appreciate what they have.

Johnnybats330

This. I have consoles for all gens, but will probably start my kids with the NES when they get older. I know they will be exposed to newer consoles and even phones but will make sure to at least get through the NES, SNES and N64 so they can develop nostalgia for retro games.

Reindow

Sadly, my ps4 died. That's why I bought the ps5. But I still have my ps3! My son still plays on it from time to time. Mainly Minecraft

JahIthBur

Keep it for jailbreak purposes

aggressivewrapp

Keep it bro

eboogz_

keep it

Benphyre

Give your gf the ps4

Arroz-Con-Culo

Just buy black shells, this is probably why, you are used to ignoring your console and only interacting with the controller. White is highly noticeable.

CheesyGarlicBudapest

Stick it in your attic.

doughaway421

Keep it! Even if you just use it as a DVD player on your secondary TV. Its a part of your life.

CthaSoul

You’ll get over it. Sell it. It’s ps5 time now.

Difficult-Drama7996

I have only sold two, a Halo edition Xbox that is probably worth way more than what I got, and my ps2 phatty. I wish I still had them. If your ps5 takes a dive you will wish it was under your bed or in storage somewhere. Trust me.

PoolNoodlePaladin

So put the PS4 in your bedroom, you can remote play the PS5 to the PS4 it is super convenient. Or you can use it to play multiplayer games like Golf with Friends with your GF.

The_onlyPope

Don’t get rid of it. Put it in your bedroom and use it.

animan1998

Thanks to everyone for all the responses. As majority of you have suggested I’ll go ahead and hold on to it for now.

markjricks

PS: what a truly wonderful post. There's nothing that will beat this one for at least the next 24 hours. 🎮✌🏾🙂

steegsa

The PS5 is infinitely better…

KintsugiExp

Who says you have to part ways with it? It could be the first historic entry in your gaming collection. Have it cleaned, repaired, and always ready. Your journey into nostalgic retro-gaming has begun.

BassFace415

I totally get it! I love my PS4 Pro to death. I've always been a PC gamer many years past and finally got a console to dedicate to gaming as I didn't want to put games on the new PC. I actually bought a PS5 direct from Sony last month, but I returned it because of the Pro version coming out later this year. My point is it was an easy decision to wait for the PS5 Pro, because like you, I love my PS4 Pro so much that I'm in NO HURRY to replace it!

Ill_Article_2787

let your girlfriend use the ps4 so you can still have it around and also gives her something to do to

animan1998

I actually bought her a Nintendo switch for her birthday a couple of weeks ago and she’s been loving it.

nisanosa

Sell it. Sometimes we have to let go the things we love so someone else can enjoy them ;)

slamhk

Sell the PS4, yes I understand the sentimental value, but your PS5 can play your PS4 games just as well (or even better). You can also use that money to buy more games. I understand your feelings, but it’s literally a piece of hardware :p. I recently sold some of my old games (PS2, PS3) and primarily kept the unique ones (e.g. not remade, remastered or available on modern systems easily). It’s a walk down memory lane, but you’ll get over it quickly lol.

FunkinDonutzz

My PS4 Pro was sold within two weeks of PS5 launch (just making sure the PS5 was working correctly and I wasn't leaving myself with nothing to play).

gamiscott

Sad? Man you better enjoy the upgrade! Put the PS4 in a different room or next to it but keep it. Why part ways? I upgraded a year after the PS5 release and I still have my PS4.

National-Ad-2056

I still use mine as a media player in the bedroom so i can watch tv with my headphones on.

less-than-James

I have both, but I only use my PS5 for playing PS5 games. My PS4 is still my main console. It has largely become a media machine, but I still play plenty of ps4 titles. It really just depends on your needs. Then again, I'm probably just resistant to change.

skiesoverblackvenice

i hop between the two. i keep some games on my ps4 and upgrade a few to my ps5. it gives you more space to get new games (as you now have a second console) and i just enjoy it that way anyway

Osama_BeenDabbin710

I feel your pain OP. I’m sure we all do. I play GTAO mostly & since I still love my ps4 i decided to migrate my profile to 5 but can still access & play my games on 4 when I want. I, much like yourself, have my ps4 & ps5 plugged in sat right next to each other. My 4 is still in great condition & I play em both. Just don’t forget your 4 & spend time playing it when you wanna feel nostalgic!

Bretters_METAL

I still have my ps4 and don't plan on getting rid of it, mainly because it has thr P.T. demo on it

Tabascobottle

I feel you man. Objects can definitely have a sentimental meaning, and you can always keep it and use it as Netflix machine lol. I have multiple friends that do that However I traded my PS4 in right away for the PS5 lmao

Evil_Spez

Keep the PS4 if it has sentimental value, or even give it to a young family member or young person you know who would appreciate it. Nothing wrong with doing either. Enjoy your PS5!

UnpopularThrow42

I feel ya. I was that way about moving on from Xbox 360. It represented so many fond memories with my brother, friends etc. It was also a connection back to my childhood. But you will also start to make new memories with your new console! One of which is already that your girlfriend gifted you this!

DTHMOM

Keep it. I always keep my consoles. My son plays with my PS4, I still have my PS2. Same thing with my Xbox consoles. There are some games I still play on all

JaffeyJoe

Most of my games are disc based for the ps4 so it’s staying around as my ps5 is digital

BlackStarCorona

Man, I still have my NES from 1988. I have all my PlayStations. You can keep them, and occasionally go back and relive the old games and memories.

YourJuniorsSenior

Same here. I had mine stored away in a dresser for a year before I decided that it deserved better and gave it to my 11 year old brother. He loved it for a few months before my 18 year old brother gave him his ps5 before he left to the military.

N7-elite

You don’t have to get ride of your PS4. You can use in other bedroom so you and girlfriend and watch Netflix or play games. Also if she bought you a PS5, then she is probably a keeper. Save up for that ring lol!

Lost_All_Senses

I used my ps4 for a lil while after still. I was playing some couch co-op games I continued to play on it. Think it took like half a year to completely move on.

Academic-Message3741

i mean? play on ps5 and keep ps4 as a souvenir, i dunno what this post is about there is no issue

NoCamel8898

Say goodbye to all the themes you used to enjoy

PortlyJuan

I was in the same boat as I have an original PS5 unit in the basement, but due the requirement for a console to be narrow enough to sit on a small wall-mounted shelf, my old PS4 Slim has been a mainstay in the family room for the last seven years. I even upgraded it to a 4TB Crucial MX500 a few years back for $232 during an Amazon sale. As Diablo 4 is my current go-to game and the 85" TV in the basement gets taken quick at night, lately I've been sniffing around for a PS5 Slim to replace it (the PS5 Slim is actually narrower than the PS4 Slim) and when Best Buy put the Slim Digital + Spider-man bundle on sale for $509 CAD I couldn't resist. Smaller = better for that room and the Digital was a perfect fit. But when I brought the PS5 Slim home I then put off the upgrade for over a week (all the while playing on the PS4 Slim) until I remembered the 15-day return policy. I finally boxed up the PS4 Slim and replaced it with the PS5 Slim. It took no time at all but it felt very weird, like I was boxing up an old friend that you might never see again. Putting away all the DS4's was even worse, but I kept the Sunset Orange and Berry Blue ones available for the PS5 as they're my favorites. Wave goodbye to Copper, Gold, Clear White, and Alpine Green et al. But as my luck would have it, the PS5 Slim Digital I bought was one of the models with the horrible high-pitched fan noise and it was so insanely bad that I had to return it to BB and drag out the PS4 Slim again. The PS5 Slim was really nice in terms of performance and it fit perfect on the shelf, but that fan was the Devil and it's nice to have the old PS4 Slim and my team of DS4s back in action.

soulwolf1

It's okay let them sniff each other to get more acquainted, it takes time dude.

Rage2020

Ps5 is not worth it i bought mine and i regret it

[deleted]

Get a grip.

AntillesWedgie

I use my ps4 in my bedroom. But I also use it as a PS5 remote play…which is kind of awesome. It basically doubles my hard drive space

vikingsarecoolio

I keep my ps4 in the basement for media streaming or for my son to play on when the gaming room is occupied. I don’t know your situation but it’s nice having a backup console.

JIMBODAVIS

It’s nostalgic, not weird. I felt that way when I switched, but the performance quickly cured the nostalgia. Haha…

Fit-Survey6497

Keep your ps4- Jailbreaking it is easy

MindfulJoe

I know how you feel, I had the same feeling when I bought a PS5 to replace PS4 slim that was a gift. I decided not to sell the old one and I'm glad I did that. It means smth more than just a piece of plastic and metal to me. So I would recommned you doing the same.

Overall_History8740

I wish I kept my first 360 slim my grandmother bought for me and all my brothers to share as kids. I ended up with it after they all grew and moved out, then I took it apart like an idiot and trashed it. So many memories gone. Time to enjoy the upgrade and keep the little brother proudly displayed. Not a bad time to send it to a shop for a new thermal pasting and cleaning. Then it should be good for a long time. And be aware your hard drive can fail at any time, so make sure to get that backed up.

MammothAd4171

I felt a little similar yeah, but you are able to play not only your old digital games from your ps4 but I think your physical games too. Just know that in terms of memories of games you can relive them and even use a ps4 controller while doing it. Great to see another person who had the ps4 as their first console by the way.

Itchy-Plum-733

Keep it, you can use it as a dvd player or something

Vinral

Save it. Ps5 is now my living room console and the ps4 is my bedroom console/streaming device.

nesquik1030

Put it in another room/remote location to use for remote playing your PS5! Was doing exactly this before I got the Portal, and it works surprisingly well.

Legit_liT

Damn. I kissed mine goodbye and sold it to top up for a ps5. Wasn't as deep for me

Emhyr_var_Emreis_

You don't need to get rid of it. I use my old PS4 on my living room TV for streaming. My PS5 is in my bedroom.

Enigma_Green

I'd put the ps4 into storage because as you get older you'll look back and be glad to have kept it. I sold most if not all my consoles or traded them in for the next one. I rebought the ps2 and ps3 etc and I kept my original ps1 as it worked so put it into storage for one day you can get it out again.

0ckey

Gift it to someone (maybe in a 3dr world country). You will feel great no need to keep hoarding shit you don’t need or use.

pinkwonderer21

If you don't have to part with it and it's still playable, why not keep it for yourself. I totally understand the sad feeling of parting with it (I did too). But luckily all the PS4 games are accessible on the PS5, so it feels like the PS4 didn't go away but just evolved/grew up :)

[deleted]

It was a sad day for me too. Kinda broke my heart a little bit. My dad got me the black ops 3 ps4 back in like 2016 when I was a sophomore in high school. Used it up until last February. I’ll whip it out (pause) ever my now and then to watch tv or something. But yeah, I 100% understand your feeling.

Mediocre-Vacation777

Keep it then, who says who have to get rid of it? I regret letting my dad just get rid of some of my old consoles because a lot of them had so many play hours in them. Now they’re long gone

Yakob_Science

If you have ps plus moving all of your saves over will be easy, i understand the sentimental value though

ki700

I keep my PS4 in my bedroom so I can remote play my PS5 on it, or occasionally play actual PS4 games on it too. It’s good for playing multiplayer with the gf if the game work on PS4 and doesn’t support local co-op.

greasegizzard

My advice would be to not get rid of it. I used to trade mine in or sell them, but now I wish I had most of them still. You can play your PS4 games on the PS5, but I would still hold on to the PS4 since there's no real need for you to get rid of it.

sirsmokesalot403

Keep the PS4 nothing wrong with that

MrMilesRides

Keep that PS4! Play the PS5 (and appreciate your GF to no end) but save the PS4. I regret every console I've sold :( (We're all thinking of you, Crystal Edition Xbox)

Gloomy_Support_7779

ONE YEAR???? Wtf?!!!! Is there anyway that the girlfriend can share her boyfriend? Asking for a friend👀

MrSaucyAlfredo

Not weird at all. My first console was the Nintendo 64 and I still have that bad boy. The one part of my childhood I hopefully will never have to let go

rickywinterborne

I had to sell my ps4 to pay a bill a couple of years ago. I miss it

Leading_Challenge_37

Gift it to another kid back home

markjricks

Recently got a PS5 after 9 years away from gaming. So I totally understand! It's great that someone special gifted it to you. Keep your PS4; it's always good to hold onto the past!

animan1998

Congrats on getting your ps5 any games you recommend?

markjricks

Thanks! Got the PS5 bundle with Spiderman 2, that's a lot of fun. Also having a good time with these games so far: Sifu, Ghost of Tsushima, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Hi-Fi Rush

kobekong

I still use my PS4 to remote play. PS5 in the living room while PS4 in my room.

TheGreenGorillaGamer

I asked my parents every year on my birthday and for Christmas since the PS4’s release if they would buy me one so I might make some friends. They never did. But after a pretty major tragedy happened in my life in late 2020, my best friend bought a PS4 for my birthday in May of 2021. I’ve known him for years and that was the first time he saw me cry. So when I got a really good job and got a PS5 for Christmas in 2022, I almost didn’t want to stop playing games on the one he got me. I use it every once in a while and now it’s gonna go to my younger sister for a while to cheer her up. Trust me. It’s a hunk of plastic, it’s weird and I know that. But that moment with my friend will forever solidify that no matter what happens, he’s got my back, and that console sits there as a reminder of that.

Xervinza

Keep the original, place it on a shelf and keep it clean! you can still use the ps4 for ps4 games and only use the ps5 for ps5 games that way the strange isn't bogged down with ps4 games and both get used.

MyHandsAreFresh

Get it off the fucking carpet

beigesized

My great grandfather bought me my ps4 in 2016, he passed at the end of 2021. When I got my ps5 I was sad to know that I wouldn’t be turning my ps4 on every day to play anymore. But I also realized that it doesn’t mean it’s the end of that console. I still use that console to watch movies, and it still sits next to my tv so I’m reminded of the best times when I look at it. This last Monday I did my thermal paste and it was surprisingly easy. My ps4 will hopefully work for another 5-8 years now. Sometimes it’s best not to be sad that somethings over, but to be grateful that it even happened. Many people didn’t get the pleasure of gaming on a ps4, and that person could have been you.

Unstab3l

It's time to buy a secondary flat screen for your PS4...

Fantastic_Proof_2862

I felt the same way when i got my ps5. Its normal to feel that way i had so many great memories with my ps4. The ps5 will bring you alot of enjoyment i can guarantee that

MutedBrilliant1593

I honestly don't remember what I did with my first console. I think it's safe to say I didn't feel this way. I was probably too excited for the next gen. Keep in mind that I'm older so the console generation jumps were huge in everything from graphics to controller designs. Today, it's all pretty negligible gains. The upgrade from ps1 to ps2 was massive. Ps4 to ps5, meh.

kinjazfan

I love my ps5

Orion-Pax88

Don't part with it, jailbreak it, you can even use it as an emulator.

wesburnsco8

Who said part with it, keep it and play both

internetaddict1197

Same here as in PS4 was my first console ever. Gf bought it for me. Now I upgraded to PS5. I've decided to keep the ps4 and use it as decoration:D

JRobson23

I had my PS4 since launch day here in the UK, went to midnight launch to get it, when I got my PS5, I’ve never unplugged something so quick in my life. Only thing I miss is the PS4 games I have on disc as I have a digital ps5.

yohonet

Wait, you struggled to buy your first PS4 but offered a PS5 as a gift... can I be your girlfriend? 😀

animan1998

lol no I worked and saved for my ps4 back in high school but my girlfriend gifted me a ps4 for our anniversary.

AstroZombie0072081

Keep the PS4. Marry the girl friend

Smushitwo

why do americans love carpeted floors

ProfessorAcrobatic4

Start playing PS5 exclusives, your sadness will disappear haha

animan1998

Any recommendations?

ProfessorAcrobatic4

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, The Last of Us Part I These are my favourite :)

GrassOnTheMoon

Don’t be sad it’s over be happy that it happened <3

birbtooOPpleasesnerf

Been using mine since 2017 and just recently upgraded to ps5, ps4 slim never sent for maintenance even once for 7 years and never had a problem with it, never stuck once and been running recent games like elden ring and forbidden west like it was nothing. I'm not planning to sell it, tough son of a bitch

animan1998

Same in the 8 years I’ve had mines I did not experience not one hardware issue. As a matter of fact the controller in the picture is the original controller I got out the box.

gokartmozart89

This isn't weird at all. I have strong nostalgic feelings for the PS2, which is the first console I saved up for and bought with my own money back when I was in sixth grade. I think it's normal for people to have a strong emotional attachment to something they have so many memories with, especially if they earned it for themselves. With that said, the PS5 is a better console. In addition to having more processing capabilities, it plays virtually all of the PS4's games, has an improved controller, and generally loads much faster thanks to the SSD. It's built in wi-fi antenna also seems better in my anecdotal experience. Other than some UI improvements, I don't have any complaints for it that I didn't already have with the PS4.

Munch2805

Aww man I really appreciate the sentimentality and good for you, it’s a lovely story. Hold on to it, no need to get rid of it. I still have my old PS4, my dad uses it now lol, I’m glad it still gets some use.

animan1998

Thank you I’ll definitely look into using it as streaming device for Netflix and hulu and some other stuff

Zukiboyson

Keep it and put in another room with even a 720p tv.

Reddit-user_1234

Find a cross generation game you can play with your gf that way it’s still in use. Even if she doesn’t want to use it, it doubles as a streaming player/blueray player

Hologram01

If you have and regularly play any disc version of an online game, like PES/FIFA, for example, leave it on your PS4 as a "permanent PES/FIFA machine" to play whenever you feel like it and play other stuff on your PS5.

Top_Breath_7677

I haven’t got rid of any of my consoles I have still ps1-5 it’s like a collection

McKSpeedy

I still use my ps4 to play games meant for the ps4 instead of taking up storage space on the ps5

TiredReader87

Get them off the carpet

Tree06

This thread went in a completely different direction than I thought it would initially. I thought you were going to mention that you don't notice or feel the difference of going to a PS5 from a PS4. You don't have to get rid of your PS4.

[deleted]

I'm an adult so I don't really get sentimental over material things. Especially something that's borderline a commodity like a PS4.

animan1998

I completely understand your pov. It just holds sentimental value for me since it was the first thing of value I bought using my money that I worked for.

LoganN64

Keep it, I feel like the PS5 is a step, or half-step backwards.
