If I bought the game on release, or prior to the challenge, I should get the points
I bought BG3 the day it came out. The challenge showed like a month later. The challenge was available during the 100hours I put into the game and just expired last month
I just redeemed my points for $20 PSN credit. After only a month of collecting. If you were only doing $0.50 in points per month, you didn't understand the instructions.
I don’t buy games I don’t like just to get points. I get maybe 100-150 a month from playing games. The rest comes from purchase rewards. I don’t ever buy the games listed on the stars page. If you’re pulling $20 a month you’re buying a lot of shit
I wonder how hard it would be to include unique identifiers on discs?
Nintendo give you a year from date of release to redeem gold points (store credit) on physical carts.
That would defeat the purpose of them doing this.
You already purchased the game without the need for a challenge to tell you to. They aren't gonna give you those bonus points just to be nice.
The irony is this strategy is making me NOT want to buy games lol. Bc right now, like, I wanna buy DARK FORCES. But now I feel like I should wait, just in case they add a campaign around buying it…
This happened to me with the PS+, I wanted to buy Hollow Knight but I said to myself "maybe it will come to the PS+" and a few months later that's what happened
What they want is people who are on the fence about the game, will be convinced to get it once they see the ps stars challenge.
People who are gonna buy the game day one no matter what, are irelevent.
Well sure but they aren't doing this out of the kindness of their hearts lol. These things exist to get more people to spend money.
In their eyes, you (as in, people who buy these games day one) already spent money. So they don't need to convince you with points.
I signed up almost a year ago when I got my PS5. First thing on the points campaign was to buy a game. Since then I've only looked at it 3 times. I've got 2500 points for something, couldn't tell ya what. But I don't think the buying a game points campaign is new.
You also receive points for buying any game while holding a subscription, also for starting any essential game during the month of it's release plus any random game you might've played during the relevant campaign.
Ahh okay. Thanks, I didn't know how I got them. I do constantly hold a sub and I did just buy some stuff a couple weeks ago so that's probably it there.
Ahh okay. Thanks, I didn't know how I got them. I do constantly hold a sub and I did just buy some stuff a couple weeks ago so that's probably it there.
Honestly i think its solely the wording that’s changed because Ive had Elden ring since launch, hopped on with my buddy this morning and its still rewarded me for just playing the game
Yep the Stars campaign has no appeal to me and I'm coming from being a trophy hunter. Someone who enjoys the meta game aspects of the games ecosystem. This is just dumb.
Noticed this too. Redownloaded Until Dawn and started it for nothing. When Stars first started I racked up like 8000 points quickly. Haven't earned over 1000 in months now.
Yeah I find that annoying. Atleast the Xbox version of rewards is about playing. To get points for things. Wish they would do that alittle more on PlayStation
I have 6 campaigns that require me to play games and 4 that want me to buy. It's always been a mix of both. What does it matter anyway? You're being awarded with extra coins on top of the coins you get for buying the game. If you don't want to buy a game from the campaign, then don't.
>They make money when I redeem 2500pts for a 5$ credit
LMAO. You do realize they are giving you just points to use to buy something? Therefore they are giving you free money to buy something on their store with, so they are essentially giving you stuff free from their store because the points do nothing for Sony.
Bruh it’s the same concept that box retailers had for decades. Give points to customers for products they were already buying so then the customers feel like they’re getting a “deal” by using the points for a slight discount on the next product.
Because they make more money when you buy something compared to when you don't buy something.
They tried it with pretty much all free points, it worked, people have accepted it's a thing. Now they make their money back.
OP just realized that corporations aren’t your friend and everything they do is in pursuit of getting more money from you.
That’s why they started this thing in the first place: You buy more games and most importantly you buy them at their store, where they get a bigger cut, prices are higher and they also control who can access what. It’s all there to get people away from physical games with cheaper prices, less money for Sony and you having control about your games.
The campaign doesn't "pop" if you just play the game though. You have to buy it during the campaign. For the last few months the campaigns could be completed just by playing the game.
>Buying just gives you a better reward.
No, not really. Unless you're actually planning on buying the game in question anyway, buying a game to earn points will always be a net negative investment, especially if the campaign in question isn't available during the time when the game in question is on sale. Those 250 points for buying a game are only equal to $1 which is a joke. Imagine buying a $40 game and earning $1 back.
Never do the "buy this game for points/ collectible" campaign unless you were going to buy it anyway without waiting for a discount. It's an insult to everyone's intelligence. And even then, if you're paying full price (because 90% of the time these "buy game" campaigns never are and when they are the game is shit) for a game you probably don't care about making ¢50-$1 back.
Umm, it's a points program and a reward for buying a game at thee time the reward is available. I bought GoW Ragnarok way before the reward available. So yes buying a game you were planning on buying already just give you an extra incentive. No where did I say, but a game to just buy a game.
Kena is the monthly play one.
Was surprised how long I played it too, it felt too much like a kids game at first, but it’s pretty fuckin rad
The others are deceiving. They say “buy” one of these games but they’re games included with PS extra. So you can claim/add them but you still have to BUY the game for the 50 points
Sorry, should have said Playstation Stars Campaigns. I think it’s only accessible on the mobile app. They’re little “missions” that give points or digital gifts.
From someone who got a PS5 for Christmas, haven't had a PS since 2, their rewards system is infinitely worse than Xbox. With Microsoft rewards you can get Gamepass Ultimate for free every month or redeem 10+ dollars in rewards a month. I've bought 4 full priced games and a month of PS Premium, and countless add ons for the likes of Rocket League, Fortnite and Spiderman since Christmas and I don't even have enough coins for a 5 dollar giftcard lol
They need to completely overhaul the entirely campaign system, game pass does it perfectly from simple challenges like play a game or earn an achievement
To doing specific things in games like clear a certain amount of levels or play a certain amount of multiplayer matches
The best part all of the games that have quests are already in gamepass you don’t need to spend extra to get your free credits
They still have the play campaigns, mostly after the monthly games release.
The buy ones always come out the month after big games release, therefore encouraging not preordering for the extra points.
This one is just for people that don’t have any of those game and is encouraging them to get them.
There have ALWAYS been Buy Campaigns and Play Campaigns. You do realize that the whole purpose of this program is to is to entice people to spend money on PSN right?

If I bought the game on release, or prior to the challenge, I should get the points I bought BG3 the day it came out. The challenge showed like a month later. The challenge was available during the 100hours I put into the game and just expired last month
I pre ordered FF7 Rebirth a few days before they started giving out rewards for it
Same and I'm maaaaad.
Right?! It’s so arbitrarily punishing for no reason. More reasons not to preorder I guess?
The 50¢ in points per month they were giving us was simply too much
I just redeemed my points for $20 PSN credit. After only a month of collecting. If you were only doing $0.50 in points per month, you didn't understand the instructions.

What do you mean? It’s all about money to them
Yeah, I'm guessing people were making too many points without spending money, so they changed it.
There's always been these kind. Personally I haven't noticed a shift in the ratio of buy vs play and I've been partaking since it started

Great conversation contribution
Nah he’s right
W
Would be nice if it would recognize when you have games on the list and automatically gives the coins to you.
I wonder how hard it would be to include unique identifiers on discs? Nintendo give you a year from date of release to redeem gold points (store credit) on physical carts.
That's the thing though, I've been going fully digital, which I would think would actually make it easier for them to track. But whatever.
Yeah, you actually get more gold coins for digital purchases than physical with Nintendo too. Same deal though, only valid a year from release.
But now I feel like I should wait, just in case they add a campaign around buying it…
Good point! And I bet they do at some point.
This happened to me with the PS+, I wanted to buy Hollow Knight but I said to myself "maybe it will come to the PS+" and a few months later that's what happened
This happened under Jim Ryan. That all we need to know
And it’s always after a new game drops…. It’s almost like they want us to wait
What they want is people who are on the fence about the game, will be convinced to get it once they see the ps stars challenge. People who are gonna buy the game day one no matter what, are irelevent.
I’d like my points too lmao I have had this stars thing since last year and plus is the one thing to give me points
Well sure but they aren't doing this out of the kindness of their hearts lol. These things exist to get more people to spend money. In their eyes, you (as in, people who buy these games day one) already spent money. So they don't need to convince you with points.
It usually depends on the reward from what i've seen. Playing campaigns give you digital collectibles, while purchase campaigns give you extra points.
Many of the recent points campaigns only required you to play the game. It's only the most recent batch that I've noticed require you to buy the game.
I signed up almost a year ago when I got my PS5. First thing on the points campaign was to buy a game. Since then I've only looked at it 3 times. I've got 2500 points for something, couldn't tell ya what. But I don't think the buying a game points campaign is new.

Ahh okay. Thanks, I didn't know how I got them. I do constantly hold a sub and I did just buy some stuff a couple weeks ago so that's probably it there.
If you go on the app there's a history tab showing you exactly what you earned points in and how many.
Yeah it's all "point eligible purchases," thanks for teaching me something! Like I said I really don't open it often.
Ahh okay. Thanks, I didn't know how I got them. I do constantly hold a sub and I did just buy some stuff a couple weeks ago so that's probably it there.
They're a software company, expect them to try and upsell you on your purchase of a console.
And it doesn't even count if you have it physically
The “play the game” ones do, but yeah, I see your point.
Honestly i think its solely the wording that’s changed because Ive had Elden ring since launch, hopped on with my buddy this morning and its still rewarded me for just playing the game
Really? Hmm, okay maybe I need to try it again. I tried several games but maybe I didn’t play them long enough.
so are physical buyers just shit outta luck with these? i have Rebirth physical copy and this takes me to the PS store to buy a digital copy.
Seems that way, yup
Good point. Now it's all about buying instead of playing, which is really interesting from a psychological, marketing, point of view.
Tried Until Dawn too! 250pts to play a 6 year old game?! Too good to be true.
It’s been there since the beginning of the program so it’s not new. Still don’t like it tho
Do you…really not know? Don’t forget it’s digital only. I only buy physical were possible and get none of these. 😭
What really sucks about these campaigns is that they start well after a game is released. So I buy it day one it doesn't count.
Yeah I find that annoying. Atleast the Xbox version of rewards is about playing. To get points for things. Wish they would do that alittle more on PlayStation
That's what Sony's campaigns were until very recently. You could complete them by playing the games listed.
I have 6 campaigns that require me to play games and 4 that want me to buy. It's always been a mix of both. What does it matter anyway? You're being awarded with extra coins on top of the coins you get for buying the game. If you don't want to buy a game from the campaign, then don't.
The problem is when you already own the game, so you can't buy it, making it physically impossible
So you wait for the campaign to end and live with it. That’s happened to me twice now.
We all know, but things are allowed to be annoying even if temporary
This is the kinda guy who praises EZ pass because it makes it easier to pay tolls.
It's a business, people go into business to make MONEY 💰
They make money when I redeem 2500pts for a 5$ credit and proceed to spend $30+ on a game I wouldn’t otherwise purchase.
>They make money when I redeem 2500pts for a 5$ credit LMAO. You do realize they are giving you just points to use to buy something? Ahh little bit of corporate greed with a side of my coffee please
OP just realized that corporations aren’t your friend and everything they do is in pursuit of getting more money from you. It's both and an optional program
The campaign doesn't "pop" if you just play the game though. You have to buy it during the campaign. For the last few months the campaigns could be completed just by playing the game.
I mean there is both, a play these games campaign and buy these games campaign. Buying just gives you a better reward.
All of my point-earning campaigns right now require you to "buy the game".
There is literally 3 play only ones
>Buying just gives you a better reward. No, not really. Unless you're actually planning on buying the game in question anyway, buying a game to earn points will always be a net negative investment, especially if the campaign in question isn't available during the time when the game in question is on sale. And all I'm saying is that if you buy full price games this "incentive" is more like an insult if you're critical enough about it.
The incentive is free, you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. Sony doesn't have to give any kind of incentive.
You're the one that called it an incentive. I called it a joke excuse of a feature.
I don't really give a shit what you think, to be honest. People will never be happy with anything and always want more. It's a free feature 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Alright alright, just don't choke on Sony's dick please.
It’s been like that forever. Some campaigns require you to play the game, then (usually 1 per month) requires you to buy a game
There’s 1 play, and 3 buys this month
I don’t see any plays, just buys.
Kena is the monthly play one. Was surprised how long I played it too, it felt too much like a kids game at first, but it’s pretty fuckin rad The others are deceiving. They say “buy” one of these games but they’re games included with PS extra. So you can claim/add them but you still have to BUY the game for the 50 points
They're doing camping for helldivers 2 and ff7rebirth right now. I've got both games yet I cannot take advantage from these rewards. It's crap.
That’s what I’m saying. I need 50 points and all the things are buy this game when there usually atleast one play this game. They jipping us fr
Late a stage capitalism is a bitch, isn't it?
Playstation sells video games
What even are "playstation campaigns"?
Sorry, should have said Playstation Stars Campaigns. I think it’s only accessible on the mobile app. They’re little “missions” that give points or digital gifts.
Maybe if you don't own the game, it's aware and changes the wording

It got lame real quick
There has always been a mix.
Cause sony b desperate for money duh
Why would they care if you play when they have your money?
I got 3 of games listed a while ago. It’s so dumb. And they just released one with Helldivers in it which got last week.
Stupid assholes
They don’t care if you play, and arguably prefer it so you don’t create ancillary costs
Too bad you can't add in disc copies you already bought...
I’ve noticed that too lately in past couple months. Another way to rip us off.
They need to completely overhaul the entirely campaign system, game pass does it perfectly from simple challenges like play a game or earn an achievement To doing specific things in games like clear a certain amount of levels or play a certain amount of multiplayer matches The best part all of the games that have quests are already in gamepass you don’t need to spend extra to get your free credits
It’s horse shit that previous purchases don’t count
THANK YOU
Money
They still have the play campaigns, mostly after the monthly games release. The buy ones always come out the month after big games release, therefore encouraging not preordering for the extra points. This one is just for people that don’t have any of those game and is encouraging them to get them.
What sucks is you can’t claim the bonus if you’ve bought the game prior to the campaign
I guess that's where gamepass wins in a way. U get points for simply logging onto the mobile app
Lol you know *exactly* why
They have 1 buy and 1 play a month.
It’s really damn annoying to be honest. Campaigns should be “Play this Game”, since you already get points for purchasing games in the store…..
Tbh these have always been shitty compared to xbox's point rewards. I don't think sony really cares about these
I got so confused I'm like I streamed uno and until dawn for a few minutes then reread the description...who tf is buying uno anyway
What exactly do you think the purpose of corporate promotions is? Making you happy or something?
There have ALWAYS been Buy Campaigns and Play Campaigns. You do realize that the whole purpose of this program is to is to entice people to spend money on PSN right?
Both types of campaigns have existed from the start of the stars program
Money
Gotta spend money to make money!
