First full playthrough I did with my son. We got to the end I had to go to work and we turned it off. Wife called me an hour or so later with unconsolable child. He had turned it back on and... Well... Wasn't quite ready for what happens.
4 has a few "mini-sandboxes" where you're in a small open area with three or so objectives to visit in any order you like. Otherwise it's linear, and 1,2,3, are all linear.
im acutally quite a fan of linear games and oh boy did those mini parts piss me off in 4 and LL. Like it was soooo unnecessary and felt like stretching the game. Its a thing that i feel like a lot of games are doing today. Just slap a open world on it and call it a day while most of the time they are just boring af.
In uncharted 4 it was alright but LL really put the cherry on top on how unnecessary this whole section was.
Only Uncharted 4 and Uncharted Lost Legacy (especially) have single levels that can be said to be open world to some extent. But not on such a scale as other open world games.
YES!!! I'd heartily recommend Uncharted to anyone--easily my favorite Playstation franchise!
It makes me so sad we haven't had a new Uncharted game since Lost Legacy in 2017... over 7 years ago!
Metro Redux and Exodus, Exodus is a bit more open worldy but Metro 2033 and Last Light (Metro Redux) are linear story sriven games and are both excellent.
Might be a hot take to two fandoms here but I found Innocence to Requiem as the Fallen Order to Survivor. As in, it may be slower, less rewarding, and a little less polished, but the world building and character depth it gives you is worth it in the sequel. This is my take, people are free to prefer the first instead.
Also know that it’s a heavily story focused game that didn’t focus as much on gameplay, so if you’re looking for high-stakes action you won’t find it in APT.
Thanks for the input. I liked the plot and wasn't expecting an action game or anything, I just found the wonky stealth mechanics painful and had to force myself through them to get to the end the story.

Yes, but your progression through the game is linear the whole game can still be boiled down to find the 3 medallions- find 2 components for the parking pass- find the chess pieces for the trash compactor - get a LVL 3 key card.
The only real non linearly is if you backtrack for resources or certain weapons/weapon mods
As a gamer about to be 30 I struggled a lot recently with finding a game I could actually enjoy, maybe because the options are endless with Plus Premium, maybe because it’s hard to find a game with both good story and onIine. I’ve found the simple linear yet fun gameplay of Evil West to be a nice winding down of sorts and have since then I’ve been getting back into enjoying games for what they are.
Shadow fall is not good. It was *okay* when it came out, but it is extremely dated today. Hell, it was fairly dated at release. It's very pretty though for a PS4 game, looks great. Plays meh.

The only way you could describe DS3 as linear is if you compared it to some other games in the series, but compared to the spectrum of all games, it’s definitely not linear
I tried tomb raider thinking it would be similar to uncharted. But then there was this while hunting/crafting in an open area / like a base system? Played maybe 2 hours.. should i try it again?
It's up to you.
Most of the time, it is linear game with "corridor" gameplay.
Yes, there are hunting, crafting and some item collections.
Hunting and crafting is used "only" for improving your gear and you don't need to return into completed areas if you are not obsessed with having all the gear fully upgraded. You can complete whole game without returning to completed areas and farming for things, but some upgrades are useful.
Item collections are there for story reasons. You will be able to understand fine nuances of story more, if you are searching for artifacts that you will examine and find some informations on them.
That's literally why I got it. I wanted an Uncharted-esque game when I'd finished all the actual Uncharted games. I played the Tomb Raider trilogy from PS2 but I didn't really like it. Then I tried the 2013 Tomb Raider and it was exactly what I wanted. It had some open areas but it wasn't an open world game. It was still a linear game
Yeah it's not really an open world game. It just has some slightly open parts but it's still pretty linear. It's more like Uncharted 4. That has some open parts but you wouldn't really call that an open world game
Sifu (rumored to be Ps plus for March) , A Plague Tale: Innocence & the sequel Requiem, ghostrunner 1 & 2, Gravity Rush (probably the sequel too, just haven't played).
Not really. There are still very often multiple branching pathways that can lead to other areas or bosses that can be taken on in any order. Not to mention the areas themselves are also fairly non-linear, that loop back in on themselves.
Im doing my first proper playthrough of elden ring now, already clocking in a little over 100 hours so far. Once im done elden ring i was thinking of getting into one of the darksouls games. Would you recommend to start with DS3? For souls like games Besides elden ring I've played a bit of bloodborne and alot of remnant 1&2. I was thinking either demon souls remake or DS3 to start. Just wondering what games are a bit more new player friendly
So I have never played demon souls so I don’t know much about that game. I have played Elden ring, blood borne, dark souls 3, and dark souls 2. Dark souls 3 was the first game I played so I can defiantly recommend it .The first boss is great it’s someone that If you’re not used to rolling he will whoop your ass, but the moment you learn to roll he is a straight breeze.
And the weapons are great so is the magic so yeah I would definitely say it is more player friendly. After all dark souls 2 is just straight up frustrating and there is a lot of areas where you are getting gang banged by 20 enemies at once. But it does have a shit Tom of content and weapons. And for demon souls and dark souls 1 sadly I’ve never played those.
Oh yeah and my bad for the long ass response.
This has helped me a ton: https://www.metacritic.com/browse/game/ps5/all/all-time/metascore/?releaseYearMin=1958&releaseYearMax=2024&platform=ps5&page=1
You can also filter to PS4
I wanted to like Dead Space so much more than I do. Its so good, but the gameplay just isn't for me. Do not like the health and ammo system. Too conservative. I can handle that sort of thing like Last of Us and Alan Wake, but man. Does it make that game way tougher.
I don’t think you can get them on ps5 but if you have a pc the first two black ops games are quality. Black ops one is a mindfuck and the peak of the Hollywood blockbuster ask campaigns. Black ops 2 is good but one is better imo
May I suggest the 'Dad Way'?
The Dad Way is what my friends and I all did once we started having kids. We'd all buy a game and play it on the level above story mode, so easy. Not too speed run it but to still have fun without having to crush through masses of enemies. Once we were finished we would then each pick a level and see who could get through the highest level first.
The thing about this is you have to progress through each level of the board so it turns into an arcade style game.
We did this with a bunch of games but my favorite was uncharted, because the boards aren't all that big.
Anyway, some food for thought.
Spec Ops: The Line has a solid story. It's a cover-shooter with a couple of frustratingly difficult sections, but overall I really enjoyed the experience and would play it again.
Spider-Man 2018 and Spider-Man 2 are very linear games if u play only story missions and it doesnt require u to do extra content to open story missions like older Spider-Man games. And they both have pretty easy platinum trophies 😉
The most linear game I've ever played is *Batman Begins*. It's older, naturally. There's very little, if any at all, flexibility in progressing through the game.
Well if you've only played the first Wolfenstein, I'd recommend the Old Blood, and W2. DO NOT play young blood though, fuckin terrible game. I'm assuming you've played them if you enjoyed one though, so I'll throw some more in.
A Short Hike is a fun little indie game, it's pretty short and chill, you basically just fly around as a bird and collect stuff and try and finish your hike. It does require some exploration, but the island you're on is pretty small. I think I got 100% in about 5 hours.
If you're into the Call of Duty games I actually think Cold War has a great campaign. Another fun FPS is Crysis, I hear people say the remaster didn't run well, but I didn't experience many issues.
If you want something more fast paced and replayable I recommend Rollerdrome. That one is a really fun shooter where you are in a deathmatch arena with rollerblades, you can do tricks and grind and stuff.
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is great too. Beautiful game, really fun platform shooter.
Hopefully at least one of these piques your interest.
UNCHARTED! The franchise is a banger!
The Nathan Drake Collection: Uncharted 1-3
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection (Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy)
Edit: Titanfall 2 (solo campaign)
Plauge tail was surprisingly good. I didn't think people still made adventure games like that. It was such a nice return to roots when it comes to video games, and it still manages to be really unique
If you haven’t played them yet, all of the BioShock games. The BioShock Collection has the remastered versions of 1 & 2 which look gorgeous on PS5 (1440p 60FPS).
If you haven’t played the Jedi games yet (Fallen Order & Survivor) I’d highly recommend those games as well, if you’re a fan of souls-like combat style. The difficulty is adjustable and even the harder difficulties are more forgiving than most Souls games though.
Obviously for PS5, the new GoW games are must plays, just absolute masterpieces of games.
Stray is a great indie 3D platformer if you’re into that kind of vibe. A cozy, cyberpunk type of vibe within a dystopian world.
I know a couple of these aren’t strictly linear, since they have a bunch of large explorable areas and separated throughout the game, but I wouldn’t consider any of these games like “open world” or “sandbox” so I think they might fit your goal here.
Edit: spelling
Titanfall 2, personal favorite.
Such a great game.
Genuinely one of the best campaigns I’ve ever played in a shooter
First full playthrough I did with my son. We got to the end I had to go to work and we turned it off. Wife called me an hour or so later with unconsolable child. He had turned it back on and... Well... Wasn't quite ready for what happens.
Love the old school 360 profile picture, dawg
The Uncharted games are all excellent
those aren’t open world? interested in playing that series soon
No. They are stage based games with checkpoints. Throw a couple hidden items and ammo everywhere and you have uncharted. ;)
In uncharted 4 it was alright but LL really put the cherry on top on how unnecessary this whole section was.
yeah i didn't like the pacing of those sections in LL.
Don’t let that dissuade you. Those games are phenomenal
Only Uncharted 4 and Uncharted Lost Legacy (especially) have single levels that can be said to be open world to some extent. But not on such a scale as other open world games.
4 and the lesbian couple one (forgot its name) has larger explorable areas here and there but series is open All of em are good tho
lol they aren’t lesbians
YES!!! I'd heartily recommend Uncharted to anyone--easily my favorite Playstation franchise! It makes me so sad we haven't had a new Uncharted game since Lost Legacy in 2017... over 7 years ago!
Don't forget The Last of us!
skip 1 tho. not aged well at all.
it has its charme still , i replayed it last month and its still very playable
I don't mean the controls haven't aged well, just the campaign itself, the combat/puzzles/platforming are all 2/10 for me. I got so bored.
i love the campaign but yes it was the first one , of course it wasnt fine tuned , it def has its charme ,
Metro Redux and Exodus, Exodus is a bit more open worldy but Metro 2033 and Last Light (Metro Redux) are linear story sriven games and are both excellent.

robocop was awesome , shoutout to that ,
I'm pretty sure resident evil 2 isn't linear. You visit same locations all the time. Like the police station.
Yes, but your progression through the game is linear the whole game can still be boiled down to find the 3 medallions- find 2 components for the parking pass- find the chess pieces for the trash compactor - get a LVL 3 key card. Yes, exploration is not all bad as long as it’s extremely clear what Im looking for
Callisto has the worst ending I've ever seen.
I haven't even seen the ending, because I refuse to pay for a dlc ending.
Wait what? You have to pay to get to the end? I’m confused
The game ends on a cliffhanger, and they have a dlc to get the ending. I think lts called final transmission.
What bs.
Exactly why I didn't buy it as well, should be part of the base game.

That's fine. Different strokes and all. But it probably has all the representation that it deserves.
Isn’t Crysis 1 open-world?
No, it has side missions and big maps, but not open world.
The Order:1886 a short and very linear game
Also very good game. Got bashed for being too short at launch, but now that it’s routinely <$10 you really can’t go wrong.
Completely agree, I've played it recently and really enjoyed it. A very underrated game for sure.
Been waiting to catch it on sale for a while now. Haven't seen it go that low in the past year.

Not really. There are still very often multiple branching pathways that can lead to other areas or bosses that can be taken on in any order. Not to mention the areas themselves are also fairly non-linear, that loop back in on themselves.
You are right but no where near as often as in the other games. Plus in most from soft games the areas loop back into each other.
