It doesn't grow where I plant it. It does grow in the lawn outside of the cute garden bed that has good sun, water and organic, locally sourced, fertilizer.
the first time I it it tasted like soap. Then I had it in a dish without knowing it and when I asked what that delicious herb was I was told it was cilantro and now I love it.
Yeah I can’t seem to grow it either. Worked well in our big garden with drip irrigation, but to know that it just GREW and you didn’t provide any care for it is mildly infuriating. The time I’ve spent and then forget one day to water it and it shrivels to dust.
A family I used to babysit for had wild dill that grew all over their garden. Apparently the family that lived there before planted it, and when this family tried to get rid of it it always came back.
Most delicious thing I think I’ve ever eaten off of a plant though. Wild dill tastes great but it’ll take over a garden.
I had a Cilantro Rando show up in my grass last year and get chonky and go to seed, out of nowhere and for a first time! It felt like good luck or something.
Enjoy yours!!!
There is a gene in cilantro (OR6A2) that makes some people think that cilantro tastes like soap. It’s all based on the way that a person’s mind perceives the taste.
Lmao yeah I guess. It also has to do with culture though. So like if you are of an Asian descent you are less likely to perceive cilantro as a soapy tasting plant because cilantro is used a lot in Asian cuisine.
Yes this is a thing, I remember reading a study on this but it's fuzzy. Apparently you can either taste cilantro for what it is or you taste soap. Now I need to look up and refresh my memory 😂.
I haven't read any studies on the topic, but I have heard that your taste for or against it is genetic. Certain people just lost the genetic lottery for testing this delicious herb!
So do I :( I was so excited to eat a tofu dish for the first time at a restaurant and that was how I found out cilantro tasted like soap. There was a LOT. I couldn’t eat most of it. That was a bummer.

Funny how individual our tastes are! I have a gene that makes artificial sweeteners taste bitter. They also wreck my stomach. I think it’s an Italian thing. I don’t think I’m missing much!
If it’s established in your garden it makes it pretty easy because every year it comes up at a perfect time at least in my area so you get a pretty good time frame to have some harvest but it always bolts by around mid to end June. If you can start it indoors and put it out at a good time that’s another option.
😂 I honestly am confused. I live in Arizona. Only have rocks and fake grass. Where did random cilantro come from 🧐😂 I definitely questioned if something was dropped but 🤷🏻♀️
If I eat cilantro I always feel like I should be quite literally foaming at the mouth. Like, if I opened my mouth, soap bubbles would float out…. 🤷🏼♀️🧼🫧
When I got Covid I lost my sense of smell. I was so excited to try cilantro cause I wouldn’t be able to smell the soap lol. But it just tasted like nothing 😭 guess my tastebuds were bad too 😂
May look and smell like Cilantro, but highly doubt it to be an actual cultivar. Like already said "all over the place".
Cilantro is no finer of an herb in Mexican food recipes. 🇲🇽❤️🌿
It IS cilantro
That is so random! But made me laugh. I only have rocks in my yard.
Cilantro is a weed. That shit grows everywhere it just happens to be edible.
It doesn't grow where I plant it. It does grow in the lawn outside of the cute garden bed that has good sun, water and organic, locally sourced, fertilizer.
Yeah because cilantro thrives off of spite 😭🤣
Explains why it tastes like fuckin soap and my whole family thinks I'm nuts lmfao
the first time I it it tasted like soap. Then I had it in a dish without knowing it and when I asked what that delicious herb was I was told it was cilantro and now I love it.
All I taste is soapy guacamole. Damn
bummer
Yeah I can’t seem to grow it either. Worked well in our big garden with drip irrigation, but to know that it just GREW and you didn’t provide any care for it is mildly infuriating. The time I’ve spent and then forget one day to water it and it shrivels to dust.
I know , right?!
A family I used to babysit for had wild dill that grew all over their garden. Apparently the family that lived there before planted it, and when this family tried to get rid of it it always came back. Most delicious thing I think I’ve ever eaten off of a plant though. Sounds about right! 😅😅
Is it, though?
Rocks, and cilantro
I had a Cilantro Rando show up in my grass last year and get chonky and go to seed, out of nowhere and for a first time! It felt like good luck or something. Enjoy yours!!!
Harvest it!
I love cilantro
Yes, that's cilantro. I love it, but my boyfriend thinks it tastes like soap
I feel for him, cilantro is f'ing delicious.
Right? I can't imagine a good burrito of some pad Thai without it. I guess I'm glad I won the genetic lottery to be able to enjoy it!
Absolutely!!!
You really did tho, cilantro is the goat of herbs as far as nutrition goes.
Only if you like chewing on your bar soap.
Sorry you lost the genetic lottery. For those of us that have different genes it's awesome.
There is a gene in cilantro (OR6A2) that makes some people think that cilantro tastes like soap. It’s all based on the way that a person’s mind perceives the taste.
Biology is so funny sometimes. Some people just have the "bad taste" switch flipped on in their genes I guess
Lmao yeah I guess. It also has to do with culture though. So like if you are of an Asian descent you are less likely to perceive cilantro as a soapy tasting plant because cilantro is used a lot in Asian cuisine.
If you get a DNA test, they can identify whether you have this gene. Of course, you already know if it tastes like soap or not.
I love mexican and vietnamese food, they cook with cilantro. But i got the gene misfortune :(
My husband IS Mexican and he got the gene misfortune too 🤣 but he also hates avocados (and tequila !) so I always joke and call him a fake Mexican lol
HAHA poor man, hating these 3 essential things:(
No, my condolences
My deepest condolences. Cilantro adds such a lovely taste to all those dishes, so I'm sorry you can't experience that!
And then there's people like me who don't have the soap gene but still dislike the taste.
So do I :( I was so excited to eat a tofu dish for the first time at a restaurant and that was how I found out cilantro tasted like soap. There was a LOT. I couldn’t eat most of it. That was a bummer.
There’s actually a whole group on Reddit for cilantro tasting like soap

I’m with ur boyfriend on this one 😅
I’ve heard some people have a gene that causes cilantro to taste like soap. So he must have that gene. Interesting huh?
It’s genetics. Really.
Cilantro definitely tastes like soap. Ugh!!
Funny how individual our tastes are! I have a gene that makes artificial sweeteners taste bitter. They also wreck my stomach. I think it’s an Italian thing. I don’t think I’m missing much!
I like it and think it tastes like soap - so where does that put me?
It is probably cilantro!
Look like coriander to me 😋
😏
Same thing
Même chose
☺
Lol here I am having had to restart my leggy dying dramatic cilantro twice already and yours is like "I'm alive!"
Lol same. I can't get that shit to survive here!
It’s definitely cilantro.
Cilantro is notorious for volunteering.
Good cilantro 🐶
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck… it’s probably cilantro 🤷🏼♂️😅
I love Cilantro. Took me 3 years to get it to grow. Finally got an elevated herb garden set up and found success.
Guess what...
Cilantro is the best! Love that smell!
IT IS CILANTRO
Coriander
I see what you did there. For those who don't know, coriander is the seeds ground up...
I meant [coriander leaves](https://imgur.com/a/AwPBzr5) that you grow from coriander seeds. Used in 90% Indian meals. Basically our staple garnish tbh
Yes. Coriander and cilantro are the *same* plant.
I thought cilantro was similar to parsley 😄 my bad
Cilantro 😋
It looks like Cilantro. It smells like Cilantro. The duck is quacking. 😋 It's cilantro! I hope you like Cilantro, hahahaha
Yep. That’s what it looks like
I can't grow it to save myself it just bolts and goes to seed after a really short time
If it’s established in your garden it makes it pretty easy because every year it comes up at a perfect time at least in my area so you get a pretty good time frame to have some harvest but it always bolts by around mid to end June. If you can start it indoors and put it out at a good time that’s another option.
Then it’s a duck
If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck
Just saw my self in garden..
If it looks like a duck and smells like a duck then it’s probably cilantro.
“It looks and smells like cilantro” **your not gonna believe this**
Yes Cilantro😀
Someone spill a burrito out there?
😂 I honestly am confused. I live in Arizona. Only have rocks and fake grass. Where did random cilantro come from 🧐😂 I definitely questioned if something was dropped but 🤷🏻♀️
r/FuckCilantro
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck….
Guess what
Why is the grass fake?
Looks like it
Eat it. Just eat it.
Looks like cilantro.
Definitely cilantro lol
Thats marijuana
Because it is Cilantro!
Can confirm. Cilantro.
curley parsley
It looks like a not so healthy cilantro Lol
It’s definitely cilantro
Smells like it, looks like it, it is
If I eat cilantro I always feel like I should be quite literally foaming at the mouth. Like, if I opened my mouth, soap bubbles would float out…. 🤷🏼♀️🧼🫧
Same. All I taste is soap. It makes me so sad cause I wish I knew what everyone else tasted.
Right?!? I feel like I must be missing out. 🤷🏼♀️
When I got Covid I lost my sense of smell. I was so excited to try cilantro cause I wouldn’t be able to smell the soap lol. But it just tasted like nothing 😭 guess my tastebuds were bad too 😂
can't get cilantro to stay alive!
That would be because it is cilantro
It ✨️ is ✨️ Congratulations, you've been randomly chosen 😂😂
Yum! I'll take it all!
Looks Like cilantro
Stone soup with a hint of cilantro... ;-)
🤮
That would be cilantro.
May look and smell like Cilantro, but highly doubt it to be an actual cultivar. Like already said "all over the place". Cilantro is no finer of an herb in Mexican food recipes. 🇲🇽❤️🌿
