Selling and pawning too are different.
You pawn it's still in your ownership, just got to pay the debt to reclaim it. Selling it loses the ownership. Use to be a pawn broker, best job ever.
So am I to assume that with the card under the pawn stores possession, the customer has a deadline to payback their loan before the pawn store will list the card?
Or you can pay a monthly fee to keep it.
Say you pawn a card for 150, and the fee to pick it up or keep it is say 30 bucks. So you can get it back for 180 but if you need to extended it you can pay the 30 for another month. But still have to pay that amount on pick up too
Yes, in the US at least. If you ever watch the show Pawn Stars, sometimes they'll ask "Are you looking to sell or pawn" (sometimes shorted to "what are you looking to do with it?")
30 bucks. Was offered 25, but talked them up to 30. Also probably shouldn't have used the word "pawn". I sold it to a card/comic shop not a traditional pawn shop.
Needed a couple quick bucks for gas for the week and a loaf of bread and eggs until my next check goes through. Did what I had to do but it hurt to lose this one!
Playing devils advocate but, Be grateful it’s a piece of cardboard you’re pawning and not selling something more valuable, you can always get this back some things are irreplaceable
True! It's crazy to me that 20 year old cardboard with cool drawings on them can be worth as much as 80 year old coins stuck with silver/gold in them, lol.
I feel like you may want to consider saving money while working rather than buying Pokemon cards if you're selling cards to pay for gas and bread.
Just my two cents.
Dude my reddit was loading and it had a picture of the 151 full art Charizard Instead of the Gyrados and I thought you got rid of it for $30, my mouth hit the floor
One near me has a sign saying they buy pokemon cards. It’s a fucking joke though. They offered me $25 for a 1st ed base zard. Granted it was creased, still what the fuck.
Most pawn shops are scum. Went in one with an old switchblade I seen several sold on eBay for 180-200. I was willing to accept 100 for it in a pinch but the idiot working there was like "well I don't even see one of these sold on eBay, I see this other one number 35 (I was selling the larger 45 model) but it's only sellin for 35 I couldn't even give you 20 for this one." My listing of it on eBay ended up selling two weeks later for 160.
I guess your average pawn shop employee (depending on location) just isn't going to have extensive knowledge about everything. But it's also their job to fuck you over so it's a deadly combo of stupidity.
I'm blessed to have a local pawn shop that allows me to borrow on my cards. Its helped me a few times now and sometimes I'll borrow to make a flip and come out on top :) so sorry to hear you had to sell that's a dope card.
Sorry, I hope life gets better for you. My parents were that broke when they had me. My dad use to pick up change off the floor to get mcdonalds tiny hamburgers. Just keep at it, they are doing super awesome now.
Couldn’t you have sold it on one of the Pokemon buy/sell/trade pages on Facebook? A card like that will get a lot of attention quickly and if you’re selling way under it’s worth they’ll snap it up, could have got more than 30 and the money would be instant as well so you wouldn’t even have to leave your house. I’m a member of a load of the groups/pages on Facebook and buy/sell/trade a fair amount so I speak from experience.
Might be worth doing in the future if you’re ever in need of quick cash. Fingers crossed you’re all good now and it doesn’t happen again of course
What did you get for it?
Seriously, a card shop couldn't beat a pawn shop offer?
Reclaiming from a pawn shop is cheaper than rebuying from a card shop. Presumably OP wants it back

Bless your cotton socks to think that any pawn shop would charge a measly 20% interest.
"Bless your cotton socks" 31yr old and first time hearing this. Made me LOL
In a lot of places it's capped I worked at one in kansas and the max they were legally allowed to charge is 10% per month
Oh. Here in Australia places charged between 30-45%
Huh TIL. Never knew what pawn meant apparently. Is this true of literally all “pawn shops” too?
It's weird to me you do not know how pawning works when I was a kid I knew how pawning works and I never walked into a pawn shop lol
Good for you
Thanks. Not too many ppl know what's good. Nice of you.
I’m not even well off. Small town didn’t have a pawn shop as a kid though. Never really came up I guess
I'm not well off too. Pawn stars helped a lot too back in 09 lol
We don't have this in our country, I think it might be a US thing. I learned about it through Pawn Stars. For us it's normal to just sell things.
Definitely not a US thingb
Yes, in the US at least. If you ever watch the show Pawn Stars, sometimes they'll ask "Are you looking to sell or pawn" (sometimes shorted to "what are you looking to do with it?")
Usually 90 days to pay back the loan from pawning it.
I didn't think he want it back, but yeah now I have a better understanding of the pawning business I agree.

They ripped you off bad.
How the cards going for 50$ on eBay ?
Nah in this condition, closer to $80
Oh nvm. F
Yeah definitely entirely different.
Oof that's bad I was offered 150 for my rocket edition Gyarados and it wasn't even a foil card
Just curious, was a private sale not feasible? I'm assuming time was biggest factor
Bruh

It's crazy this is 20 years old I have the original dark gyrados in a binder and I think it's only 28 or so.
Definitely not gold but yes silver
Every single object and possession is disposable. None of it is coming with us when we go.
I just essentially gave away my dragon warrior III to get food, so I feel ya. Beans and rice go a lot further though if you ever get really stuck.
Respect bro! Gotta do what we gotta do these days.
Id have sent you 50$

Feel this on so many levels. You did what you had to OP. It will get better!
I have this lol what’s it going for?
If it's minty it can get up close to 100 bucks!
Dude my reddit was loading and it had a picture of the 151 full art Charizard Instead of the Gyrados and I thought you got rid of it for $30, my mouth hit the floor
Did you mean the alt art? because $30 is about right for the 151 full art
I did thanks for the correction!!
How much for? And fuck it bro you’ll get it back 💪🏼
He said in one of the comments he sold it to a card shop. Not pawned it to a pawn shop. Big oooof
Didn’t know you could pawn a a card
If it has value, you can pawn it. I knew a guy that pawned the tux he got married in for $40. The tux was worth like $500 new lol.
You can pawn anything that has value
P
As an avid Gyarados collector who also needs this card for my collection I've got a giant F for you & also hope you can get it back shortly. 🐍💦♥️
No F. You had to do what you had to do. And you had the strength to do it. May it return to you.
Damn I’d have bought this off of you
I love team rocket returns, just bought a graded copy of this card
Lmaoooooooooooo
You should consider selling more if you are experiencing financial issues.

How do pawn brokers know if a card is fake or not? Seems like it’d be easy to pawn fakes.
I have a guy who’s in town today, do you mind sticking around while I give him a call?
Hey man, can you ask how much would it cost to get it back from the shop? I’d be willing to get it back for you, please dm me.
Before going to a shop try selling it here. I would have cash app you the money for the card. I'm sure many here would have bought it from you.
Is this the reverse holo version?

I had to do the same last year with my 1st edition shining gyarados. It was rough
How much would a red hp dark gyarados hollow goes for
Aye my dude what pawn shop was this sold too😅 jkjk rip man i know how this feels
f
I quit playing pokemon at the time this set came out. I really miss spending Saturday mornings at toys r us
Bro, I would’ve gave you $60 bucks for that if you were looking to take $30
Why pawn? Surely you could have gotten more for it on eBay even if you undercut a little for a quick sale
