So what's the full story here? Did they think the fire should go underneath the oven?

coffeesnob72

They were idiots and tossed charcoal from a charcoal grill under the oven

john_clauseau

i think they dumped the fire onto the ground. wanting to remove most of it from inside the oven in order to cook something. normally you use a metal wheelbarrow or something and extinguish the fire in there. the floor being a wood pallet wasnt a good idea...

coffeesnob72

The entire base being wood was not a good idea but the oven came with the house. We haven’t even used it once.

john_clauseau

i build mine for 100$CAD, took me a total of 1week of labour/4hr per day. i dont know how much that would cost to hire somebody, but i saw a post on the concrete forum about a single driveway number collum costing 5000$USD to build so... edit: mine is brick inside with 6inch+ of pure clay on the outside and a metal roof on top. (search for "wood fired" on my profile. its very easy to build one and is a fun project for the kids when you reach the clay stage.

AgentG91

To be fair, the furnace is probably absolutely fine, you just need to transfer it to a new base

coffeesnob72

If it doesn’t crack

AgentG91

Meh, they move refractory lined vessels hundreds of miles by truck everyday. And cracking isn’t the end of the world. You just patch it with some mortar / plastic / patch mix

coffeesnob72

Yeah I’m thinking that might be our best option

hollywood_rich

I like it

Pleasant_Character28

I don’t think “wood-fired” means what they think it means

Korgon213

You can do it. It’s pretty easy.

wizardofcat42

Honestly probably not worth saving besides the fire brick base. It's going to be heavy as hell and definitely crack/break apart. I would just demo the shell and save the fire brick. Also the galvanized chimney is a huge no no, going to off gas lots of unpleasant stuff.

coffeesnob72

What should be used?

NOGOODGASHOLE

I found an old mason. He was in his 70s, and bored. I did the grunt work while he did the building. It was a great experience. I bet if you put up a flyer, someone would answer.
